  • Chargeback and billing across public and private clouds

    Had a great conversation today regarding the need for metering, chargeback, and billing of cloud computing resources. The person I spoken with at a Fortune 1000 company increased the scope and magnitude of the issue of billing for cloud computing resources beyond what I had previously considered. I believed that doing any type of chargeback and billing for one public, private or hybrid installation was difficult. This person pointed out that the problem is even bigger in scope. The reality is many companies are using multiple public cloud vendors and have many different private cloud data centers. A customer may use AWS for some smaller public cloud applications, Salesforce.com (SaaS), Rackspace for IaaS, Savvis for colocation and a variety of Iaas and PaaS implementations for the private cloud. How does a company get a consolidated bill for all these different cloud environments? I am not sure their is an answer right now.

  • 11.10 does not restore open apps in hibernate, works like shutdown

    I noticed that my 11.10 does not hibernate. When I hibernate, and starts PC, it doesn't restore all my open apps etc. Its like a shutdown ... why might that be? UPDATE Output from gsettings http://pastie.org/2926504 Using a vanilla Ubuntu Desktop 11.10 installed yesterday (no more from alternate CD, but problem still persists) I dont see any options in BIOS for S1, S3 or ACPI, are they hidden somewhere?   • Need a CDN with SSL

    We currently use Edgecast through Speedyrails. Back when I did my research they were both fast and very cost-effective. I haven't looked in a while, but now we need SSL on our assets as well. I reached out to our current provider and they want a setup fee and something like 260 USD per host per month (we use multiple hosts currently). I looked at AWS Cloudfront and it seems the most cost affective way to get SSL, but it's not a custom domain then (e.g. cdn.example.org), which I could live with. Has any else researched this lately and has any providers to get in touch with - can be resellers or direct buys. I'm not looking for a bargain, I just want to get an idea what these things cost. Edit, 2012-08-23: Must have is custom origin. E.g. I don't want to manually upload files somewhere else. Edgecast and Cloudfront both support this.

    In a nutshell, should we design death into our programs, processes, and threads at a low level, for the good of the overall system? Failures happen. Processes die. We plan for disaster and occasionally recover from it. But we rarely design and implement unpredictable program death. We hope that our services' uptimes are as long as we care to keep them running. A macro-example of this concept is Netflix's Chaos Monkey, which randomly terminates AWS instances in some scenarios. They claim that this has helped them discover problems and build more redundant systems. What I'm talking about is lower level. The idea is for traditionally long-running processes to randomly exit. This should force redundancy into the design and ultimately produce more resilient systems. Does this concept already have a name? Is it already being used in the industry?

  • Why is FTP file transfer from Android Phone Slow?

    To transfer files from my Android phone to Ubuntu, I use an app that creates a FTP server on the phone. Copying files to Ubuntu 12.04 (same with 12.10) I get up to 260 KB/s. Copying files to Windows 7 I get up to 1050 KB/s. I am currently on a fresh install of 12.10 with barely anything installed with the same results. I have tested with both a Galaxy S3 and HTC Desire HD with identical results. I have tested about 5 apps with the same results. Why is it slow on Ubuntu?

    Hey Guys I am trying to remove all the relative image path slashes from a chunk of HTML that contains several other elements. For example <img src="../../../../images/upload/1/test.jpg /> would need to become <img src="http://s3.amazonaws.com/website/images/upload/1/test.jpg" /> I was thinking of writing this as a rails helper, and just passing the entire block into the method, and make using Nokogiri or Hpricot to parse the HTML instead, but I don't really know. All is fine except of when code is falling with exception i see Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.3053; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.3053 but at project properties 3.5 is selected. what is wrong and how to fix it? ps: i'm running code directly from VS2008 (by pressing ctrl+f5) without any dedicated IIS.

Since S3 doesn't allow that, we know we can name the files according to their structure for storage. For example... abc/123/draft.doc What I want to know is if I want to provide a public link to this particular file is there anyway that the file can simply be draft.doc instead of abc/123/draft.doc ?

Amazon states[1] AFR** of between 0.1%-0.5%, lets say 0.5%, 0.005. To restate the question is the AFR composed of two EBSs mirrored actually 0.005*0.005 = 0.000025? To be clear I'm not interested in high availability here, just very high durability. *EBS = elastic block storage (amazons persistant disks) **AFR = annual failure rate.
