  • WCF or Sockets for Communication in a real-time environment?

    - by PieterG
I have a scenario where I need to send a series of data across 2 clients. The data includes Serialized XML that will contain commands that the other client will need to react to. I will also need to send images across the wire as I need to provide a chat facility in the form of video/audio chat. I would like a single communication medium for both, as the number of messages/commands might be a few. WCF or Sockets?

  • How can I avoid huge communication classes in WCF?

    - by mafutrct
My understanding is that all contract-implementing code has to be in a single class, that can become very large, obviously. How do I avoid this? I really prefer to have a few small classes doing one part of the communication with clients than a single behemoth class. The only idea I could think of is using multiple interfaces implemented by a single class split up by partial, but I don't this this is really solving the issue.

  • How do I make a custom delegate protocol for a UIView subclass?

    - by timothy5216
    I'm making some tabs and I want to have my own delegate for them but when I try to send an action to the delegate nothing happens. I also tried following this tutorial: link text But it doesn't work for me :( Here is my code: TiMTabBar.h @protocol TiMTabBarDelegate; @interface TiMTabBar : UIView { id<TiMTabBarDelegate> __delegate; ... int selectedItem; ... } //- (id)init; - (id)initWithDelegate:(id)aDelegate; - (void)setSelectedIndex:(int)item; .. @property (nonatomic) int selectedItem; @property(assign) id <TiMTabBarDelegate> __delegate; .. ... @end @protocol TiMTabBarDelegate<NSObject> //@optional - (void)tabBar:(TiMTabBar *)_tabBar didSelectIndex:(int)index; @end TiMTabBar.m: #import "TiMTabBar.h" ... @interface NSObject (TiMTabBarDelegate) - (void)tabBar:(TiMTabBar *)_tabBar didSelectIndex:(int)index; @end @implementation TiMTabBar @synthesize selectedItem; @synthesize __delegate; ... /* - (id)init { ... return self; } */ - (id)initWithDelegate:(id)aDelegate; { //[super init]; __delegate = aDelegate; return self; } - (void)awakeFromNib { //[self init]; //[self initWithDelegate:self]; ... } - (void)setSelectedIndex:(int)item { selectedItem = item; if (self.__delegate != NULL && [self.__delegate respondsToSelector:@selector(tabBar:didSelectIndex:)]) { [__delegate tabBar:self didSelectIndex:selectedItem]; } ... if (item == 0) { ... } else if (item == 1) { ... } else if (item == 2) { ... } else if (item == 3) { ... } else if (item == 4) { ... } else { ... } } /* - (void)tabBar:(TiMTabBar *)_tabBar didSelectIndex:(int)index; { //[delegate tabBar:self didSelectIndex:index]; //if (self.delegate != NULL && [self.delegate respondsToSelector:@selector(tabBar:didSelectIndex:)]) { //[delegate tabBar:self didSelectIndex:selectedItem]; //} NSLog(@"tabBarDelegate: %d",index); } */ @end The delegate only works works inside itself and not in any other files like: @interface XXXController : UIViewController <TiMTabBarDelegate> { ... ... IBOutlet TiMTabBar *tabBar; ... } ... @end XXXController.m: #import "XXXController.h" #import <QuartzCore/QuartzCore.h> @implementation XXXController - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; [self becomeFirstResponder]; ... tabBar = [[TiMTabBar alloc] initWithDelegate:self]; //tabBar.__delegate = self; ... } #pragma mark TiMTabBar Stuff - (void)tabBar:(TiMTabBar *)_tabBar didSelectIndex:(int)index; { NSLog(@"Controller/tabBarDelegate: %d",index); } @end None of this seems to work in XXXController. Anyone know how to make this work?

  • Cisco VPN Client Behind ASA 5505

    - by fdf33
I'm trying to get connected to another ASA via Cisco VPN Client. I am behind an ASA 5505 myself and I am tryihng to VPN to a 5510. I get the message: Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding. I can connect to the other ASA if I use a normal cheap Linksys. Here's the version of my ASA: Result of the command: "sh ver" Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 8.4(1) Any help would be great. • OSI Model

    - by kaleidoscope
The Open System Interconnection Reference Model (OSI Reference Model or OSI Model) is an abstract description for layered communications and computer network protocol design. In its most basic form, it divides network architecture into seven layers which, from top to bottom, are the Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data Link, and Physical Layers. It is therefore often referred to as the OSI Seven Layer Model. A layer is a collection of conceptually similar functions that provide services to the layer above it and receives service from the layer below it. Description of OSI layers: Layer 1: Physical Layer ·         Defines the electrical and physical specifications for devices. In particular, it defines the relationship between a device and a physical medium. ·         Establishment and termination of a connection to a communications medium. ·         Participation in the process whereby the communication resources are effectively shared among multiple users. ·         Modulation or conversion between the representation of digital data in user equipment and the corresponding signals transmitted over a communications channel. Layer 2: Data Link Layer ·         Provides the functional and procedural means to transfer data between network entities. ·         Detect and possibly correct errors that may occur in the Physical Layer. The error check is performed using Frame Check Sequence (FCS). ·         Addresses is then sought to see if it needs to process the rest of the frame itself or whether to pass it on to another host. ·         The Layer is divided into two sub layers: The Media Access Control (MAC) layer and the Logical Link Control (LLC) layer. ·         MAC sub layer controls how a computer on the network gains access to the data and permission to transmit it. ·         LLC layer controls frame synchronization, flow control and error checking.   Layer 3: Network Layer ·         Provides the functional and procedural means of transferring variable length data sequences from a source to a destination via one or more networks. ·         Performs network routing functions, and might also perform fragmentation and reassembly, and report delivery errors. ·         Network Layer Routers operate at this layer—sending data throughout the extended network and making the Internet possible.   Layer 4: Transport Layer ·         Provides transparent transfer of data between end users, providing reliable data transfer services to the upper layers. ·         Controls the reliability of a given link through flow control, segmentation/de-segmentation, and error control. ·         Transport Layer can keep track of the segments and retransmit those that fail. Layer 5: Session Layer ·         Controls the dialogues (connections) between computers. ·         Establishes, manages and terminates the connections between the local and remote application. ·         Provides for full-duplex, half-duplex, or simplex operation, and establishes checkpointing, adjournment, termination, and restart procedures. ·         Implemented explicitly in application environments that use remote procedure calls. Layer 6: Presentation Layer ·         Establishes a context between Application Layer entities, in which the higher-layer entities can use different syntax and semantics, as long as the presentation service understands both and the mapping between them. The presentation service data units are then encapsulated into Session Protocol data units, and moved down the stack. ·         Provides independence from differences in data representation (e.g., encryption) by translating from application to network format, and vice versa. The presentation layer works to transform data into the form that the application layer can accept. This layer formats and encrypts data to be sent across a network, providing freedom from compatibility problems. It is sometimes called the syntax layer. Layer 7: Application Layer ·         This layer interacts with software applications that implement a communicating component. ·         Identifies communication partners, determines resource availability, and synchronizes communication. o       When identifying communication partners, the application layer determines the identity and availability of communication partners for an application with data to transmit. o       When determining resource availability, the application layer must decide whether sufficient network or the requested communication exists. o       In synchronizing communication, all communication between applications requires cooperation that is managed by the application layer. • What's new in Servlet 3.1 ? - Java EE 7 moving forward

    - by arungupta
Servlet 3.0 was released as part of Java EE 6 and made huge changes focused at ease-of-use. The idea was to leverage the latest language features such as annotations and generics and modernize how Servlets can be written. The web.xml was made as optional as possible. Servet 3.1 (JSR 340), scheduled to be part of Java EE 7, is an incremental release focusing on couple of key features and some clarifications in the specification. The main features of Servlet 3.1 are explained below: Non-blocking I/O - Servlet 3.0 allowed asynchronous request processing but only traditional I/O was permitted. This can restrict scalability of your applications. Non-blocking I/O allow to build scalable applications. TOTD #188 provide more details about how non-blocking I/O can be done using Servlet 3.1. HTTP protocol upgrade mechanism - Section 14.42 in the HTTP 1.1 specification (RFC 2616) defines an upgrade mechanism that allows to transition from HTTP 1.1 to some other, incompatible protocol. The capabilities and nature of the application-layer communication after the protocol change is entirely dependent upon the new protocol chosen. After an upgrade is negotiated between the client and the server, the subsequent requests use the new chosen protocol for message exchanges. A typical example is how WebSocket protocol is upgraded from HTTP as described in Opening Handshake section of RFC 6455. The decision to upgrade is made in Servlet.service method. This is achieved by adding a new method: HttpServletRequest.upgrade and two new interfaces: javax.servlet.http.HttpUpgradeHandler and javax.servlet.http.WebConnection. TyrusHttpUpgradeHandler shows how WebSocket protocol upgrade is done in Tyrus (Reference Implementation for Java API for WebSocket). Security enhancements Applying run-as security roles to #init and #destroy methods Session fixation attack by adding HttpServletRequest.changeSessionId and a new interface HttpSessionIdListener. You can listen for any session id changes using these methods. Default security semantic for non-specified HTTP method in <security-constraint> Clarifying the semantics if a parameter is specified in the URI and payload Miscellaneous ServletResponse.reset clears any data that exists in the buffer as well as the status code, headers. In addition, Servlet 3.1 will also clears the state of calling getServletOutputStream or getWriter. ServletResponse.setCharacterEncoding: Sets the character encoding (MIME charset) of the response being sent to the client, for example, to UTF-8. Relative protocol URL can be specified in HttpServletResponse.sendRedirect. This will allow a URL to be specified without a scheme. That means instead of specifying "http://anotherhost.com/foo/bar.jsp" as a redirect address, "//anotherhost.com/foo/bar.jsp" can be specified. In this case the scheme of the corresponding request will be used. Clarification in HttpServletRequest.getPart and .getParts without multipart configuration. Clarification that ServletContainerInitializer is independent of metadata-complete and is instantiated per web application. A complete replay of What's New in Servlet 3.1: An Overview from JavaOne 2012 can be seen here (click on CON6793_mp4_6793_001 in Media). Each feature will be added to the JSR subject to EG approval. • How can I learn a multitouch screen's communication protocol and write a C# application for it?

    - by puri
I have got a monitor with multitouch overlay on top of it. It works fine with Windows 7 but I want to write a multitouch application in C# for Windows XP which doesn't support touch feature out of the box. There is no documentation whatsoever and I emailed the manufacturer but never got a reply. However the device works with Google Earth, which doesn't natively support multitouch, on Windows XP. So I think it generates many types of messages together i.e. WM_TOUCH for Windows 7, one for Google Earth COM API, and probably its own messages either in UDP or Windows message form. How can I trap all communications and learn the protocol?

  • How come ftp protocol produces transmission errors sometimes if the data is using TCP, which is checksummed?

    - by Cray
Every once in a while, downloading (especially large) files through ftp will produce errors. I am guessing that's also partly the reason why all major sites are publishing external checksums along with their downloads. How is this possible if ftp goes through TCP, which has checksum inbuilt and resends data if it is transmitted corruptly? One could argue that this is due to the short length of the CRC in the TCP protocol (which is 16bit I think, or something like that), and the collisions are simply happening too often. but 1) for this to be true, not only must there be a CRC collision, but also the random network error must modify both the CRC in the packet, and the packet itself so that the CRC will be valid for the new packet... Even with 16 bitCRC, is that so likely? 2) There are seemingly not many errors in, say, browsing the web which also goes through TCPIP.

  • How to launch a file protocol URL with an anchor from Java?

    - by Jeff C
From a Java program, I need to launch the default browser on a local HTML file, pointed to an anchor inside the file. In Java SE 6, the java.awt.Desktop.browse method will open the file, but will not honor the anchor, so something like the following opens the file at the top, but does not page the browser to the anchor: Desktop.getDesktop("file:///C:/foo/bar.html#anchor"); Sun says here http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6477862 that anchors are not supported in the file URI protocol. Does anyone have a better answer? I can use Java SE 6. I would be OK with a Windows only solution.

  • Using thread inter-communication to increase my server app's IO throughput; not sure how

    - by Howard Guo
My server application creates a new thread for each incoming connection. Incoming requests are serialized in a BlockingQueue. There is one worker thread taking items from the queue, produce a response and send the response through socket. I have noticed a throughput issue: Currently, worker thread is responsible of sending the response message through socket, thus severely wasting processing power and throughput. I am considering: rather than sending the response itself, why not telling network IO threads to send the response? However, when I think about thread inter-communication, I cannot yet figure out how to approach it: Worker thread will produce a response, but how will it inform the response message to IO thread? Is there a standard/best practice? Thank you.

  • How to persist and load an object which conforms to NSCoding protocol?

    - by mystify
I have made an class which conforms to the NSCoding protocol and does all the encode and decode stuff. For my app, I simply want to persist an object from that class to the device and the next time when the app launches, I want to load that object back into memory. Basically it's just an class which holds some user input information. For example the user starts writing a text but then quits the app. Next time I want to load that data object. I guess I need NSKeyedArchiver? Is there a good tutorial on this? How do I do that?

In HTTP I could use a Range header in the request to specify the data range of the remote resource. If it's a 1mb file, I could ask for the bytes from 600k to 700k. Is there anything like that in FTP? I am reading the FTP RFC, don't see anything, but want to make sure I'm not missing anything. There's a Restart command in FTP - would that work?

  • How to copy files from local machine to server using SSH file transfer protocol?

    - by morpheous
I have an Ubuntu 9.10 desktop machine which I use locally. I am setting up a server on a hosting provider. The server will run a very minimal version of Ubuntu server LTS (only LAMP and email server no GUI). I want to write a script (scheduled as a cron job) that will allow me to upload local files onto the server. I want to use [SFTP][1], for security reasons. I am new to shell scripting - but I guess shell scripting is the way to do this (unless I am mistaken). Can anyone provide me with the initial pointers on how to go about writing such a script, in order to SECURELY upload local files to the server? Ideally, I would like to compress the files before the transfer (to save on bandwidth) [1]: http://SSH file transfer protocol

  • iPhone / Android: what protocol stacks do apps use for connecting to centralised services?

    - by Richard
Hi All, Aplogies for the ignorant question, I have no experience with app development on any mobile platform. Basically what I want to know is what communication protocols do apps typically use for accessing/querying centralised services? E.g if I port a webapp/service to iPhone/Andriod, typically how would I access/query this web service in my app? E.g is it over HTTP, or are there other protocols? Also, presumably the GUI of an app is constructed with Apple/Andriod GUI libraries (in java? cocoa?). Can an app GUI be defined with HTML/javascript like a webpage? Sorry again for the pure noob questions. Thanks

  • How do you get the File:// protocol to work in IE8?

    - by chrismay
I am running a website on my local machine ("http://localhost/asdf") and trying to get some file:// protocol links to work. In reality I'm trying to open a folder, not a specific file, but I can't get either to work. I've put localhost in my "trusted zone", I've tried every combo of "file" ,":", some number of "/" and then a whole bunch of different paths, but encoded and not encoded. Nothing I do causes anything to open when I click on the link. If I copy the link destination, and paste that in the browser address window, then it works as expected. Anyone know the secret?

  • Why does decorating a class break the descriptor protocol, thus preventing staticmethod objects from behaving as expected?

    - by Robru
I need a little bit of help understanding the subtleties of the descriptor protocol in Python, as it relates specifically to the behavior of staticmethod objects. I'll start with a trivial example, and then iteratively expand it, examining it's behavior at each step: class Stub: @staticmethod def do_things(): """Call this like Stub.do_things(), with no arguments or instance.""" print "Doing things!" At this point, this behaves as expected, but what's going on here is a bit subtle: When you call Stub.do_things(), you are not invoking do_things directly. Instead, Stub.do_things refers to a staticmethod instance, which has wrapped the function we want up inside it's own descriptor protocol such that you are actually invoking staticmethod.__get__, which first returns the function that we want, and then gets called afterwards. >>> Stub <class __main__.Stub at 0x...> >>> Stub.do_things <function do_things at 0x...> >>> Stub.__dict__['do_things'] <staticmethod object at 0x...> >>> Stub.do_things() Doing things! So far so good. Next, I need to wrap the class in a decorator that will be used to customize class instantiation -- the decorator will determine whether to allow new instantiations or provide cached instances: def deco(cls): def factory(*args, **kwargs): # pretend there is some logic here determining # whether to make a new instance or not return cls(*args, **kwargs) return factory @deco class Stub: @staticmethod def do_things(): """Call this like Stub.do_things(), with no arguments or instance.""" print "Doing things!" Now, naturally this part as-is would be expected to break staticmethods, because the class is now hidden behind it's decorator, ie, Stub not a class at all, but an instance of factory that is able to produce instances of Stub when you call it. Indeed: >>> Stub <function factory at 0x...> >>> Stub.do_things Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> AttributeError: 'function' object has no attribute 'do_things' >>> Stub() <__main__.Stub instance at 0x...> >>> Stub().do_things <function do_things at 0x...> >>> Stub().do_things() Doing things! So far I understand what's happening here. My goal is to restore the ability for staticmethods to function as you would expect them to, even though the class is wrapped. As luck would have it, the Python stdlib includes something called functools, which provides some tools just for this purpose, ie, making functions behave more like other functions that they wrap. So I change my decorator to look like this: def deco(cls): @functools.wraps(cls) def factory(*args, **kwargs): # pretend there is some logic here determining # whether to make a new instance or not return cls(*args, **kwargs) return factory Now, things start to get interesting: >>> Stub <function Stub at 0x...> >>> Stub.do_things <staticmethod object at 0x...> >>> Stub.do_things() Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> TypeError: 'staticmethod' object is not callable >>> Stub() <__main__.Stub instance at 0x...> >>> Stub().do_things <function do_things at 0x...> >>> Stub().do_things() Doing things! Wait.... what? functools copies the staticmethod over to the wrapping function, but it's not callable? Why not? What did I miss here? I was playing around with this for a bit and I actually came up with my own reimplementation of staticmethod that allows it to function in this situation, but I don't really understand why it was necessary or if this is even the best solution to this problem. Here's the complete example: class staticmethod(object): """Make @staticmethods play nice with decorated classes.""" def __init__(self, func): self.func = func def __call__(self, *args, **kwargs): """Provide the expected behavior inside decorated classes.""" return self.func(*args, **kwargs) def __get__(self, obj, objtype=None): """Re-implement the standard behavior for undecorated classes.""" return self.func def deco(cls): @functools.wraps(cls) def factory(*args, **kwargs): # pretend there is some logic here determining # whether to make a new instance or not return cls(*args, **kwargs) return factory @deco class Stub: @staticmethod def do_things(): """Call this like Stub.do_things(), with no arguments or instance.""" print "Doing things!" Indeed it works exactly as expected: >>> Stub <function Stub at 0x...> >>> Stub.do_things <__main__.staticmethod object at 0x...> >>> Stub.do_things() Doing things! >>> Stub() <__main__.Stub instance at 0x...> >>> Stub().do_things <function do_things at 0x...> >>> Stub().do_things() Doing things! What approach would you take to make a staticmethod behave as expected inside a decorated class? Is this the best way? Why doesn't the builtin staticmethod implement __call__ on it's own in order for this to just work without any fuss? Thanks.

  • WIX: How to register an Application to a URL Protocol?

    - by NOP slider
In WIX 3.5 you can register file types easily: <ProgId Id="MyApp.File" Description="MyApp File" Icon="MyAppEXE" IconIndex="0"> <Extension Id="ext" ContentType="application/x-myapp-file"> <Verb Id="open" Command="&amp;Open" TargetFile="MyAppEXE" Argument="&quot;%1&quot;"/> </Extension> </ProgId> What if I want to register an URL protocol, as specified here? Obviously, it has no extension so where would I put the Verb tag? Or should I use another approach? Thanks.

  • Is there any way to validate the Open Graph protocol meta tags for Facebook integration?

    - by John
    Is there any way to validate the Facebook Open Graph protocol meta tags in the head section of my website? Code below. <meta property="og:title" content="my content" /> <meta property="og:type" content="company" /> <meta property="og:url" content="http://mycompany.com/" /> <meta property="og:image" content="http://mycompany.com/image.png" /> <meta property="og:site_name" content="my site name" /> <meta property="fb:admins" content="my_id" /> <meta property="og:description" content="my description" /> -edit- I mean validating the html. Sorry for the confusion! Right now my site isn't valid because of these tags.

  • Oracle 10g for Windows does not start up on system boot

    - by Mike Dimmick
We have an Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition installation (10.2.0.1.0) on a Windows Server 2003 virtual machine. It was initially created with Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 but has now been migrated to Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. The services start on system boot, but the instance does not start up. This problem was actually occurring on Virtual Server after a migration from one server to another, but I managed to fix it then with: oradim -edit -sid ORCL -startmode auto However, this now has no effect. oradim.log (in %OracleHome%\database\oradim.log) says: Thu Jun 10 14:14:48 2010 C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_3\bin\oradim.exe -startup -sid orcl -usrpwd * -log oradim.log -nocheck 0 Thu Jun 10 14:14:48 2010 ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error sqlnet.log in the same folder has: Fatal NI connect error 12560, connecting to: (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=BEQ)(PROGRAM=oracle)(ARGV0=oracleorcl)(ARGS='(DESCRIPTION=(LOCAL=YES)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=beq)))'))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=orcl)(CID=(PROGRAM=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_3\bin\oradim.exe)(HOST=ORACLE-VM)(USER=SYSTEM)))) VERSION INFORMATION: TNS for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production Oracle Bequeath NT Protocol Adapter for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production Time: 10-JUN-2010 14:14:48 Tracing not turned on. Tns error struct: ns main err code: 12560 TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error ns secondary err code: 0 nt main err code: 530 TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error nt secondary err code: 2 nt OS err code: 0 The ORA_ORCL_AUTOSTART registry value is set to TRUE, so it should be auto-starting - and you can see that it's trying to. The problem also occurs when stopping and restarting the OracleServiceORCL service. I've enabled SQL*Net tracing which shows: [10-JUN-2010 15:09:33.919] snlpcss: entry [10-JUN-2010 15:09:34.419] snlpcss: Unable to spawn Oracle oracle (DESCRIPTION=(LOCAL=YES)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=beq))) orcl, error 2. [10-JUN-2010 15:09:34.419] snlpcall: exit On a hunch that error 2 is Windows error 2 (file not found) I tried restarting the service with Process Monitor watching oradim.exe, but this appears to delay things just enough that it always works. Right now I have a horrible hack where I've created a Scheduled Task to run oradim -startup -sid ORCL when the Administrator account logs on, and set the VM to auto-logon. I'd still like to work out why it's not working.
