• Hide ticks at Min and Max in WPF Slider

  Hi, I want to display a Slider ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 with only one tick mark at 1.0 to mark the center and default value. I have defined a Slider as follows: <Slider Minimum="0.5" Maximum="1.5" IsMoveToPointEnabled="True" IsSnapToTickEnabled="False" Orientation="Horizontal" Ticks="1.0" TickPlacement="BottomRight" Value="{Binding SomeProperty, Mode=TwoWay}"/> However, besides a tick mark at 0.0 this Slider also shows tick marks at 0.5 and 1.5, i.e. the Minimum and Maximum values. Is there a way to hide these min/max tick marks?! I checked all properties and tried changing some of them, but did not have success so far. Thanks, gehho.

  hi I hve this code struct Student { char name[48]; float grade; int marks[10,5]; char gender; }; Student s; Now I have to get the sizeof s so i added printf("%d",sizeof(s)); now when I hit compile the result showing is 256 and its wrong because it shoud be 253 as because the size of char name[48]; ---- 48 and float grade; ----- 4 and int marks[10,5]; ------ 200 and char gender; -------1 so 48+4+200+1 = 253 so why its telling me 256 ??

  A horizontal compass looks something like this if you are facing due East (90 degrees). 85----90---95 If you were facing due 355 degrees northwest, it would look like this: 350----355---0 As you turn the compass, the number should cycle from 0 - 360 - 0 So, my question is, how would you implement a view like this on the iPhone? I had a couple of ideas: Make one long image with all numbers and tick marks, and shift it left/right when the compass heading changes Create pieces of the view as tiles and append them when the compass heading changes. Create a line of tick marks that shifts with the compass heading, and just write numbers on it as needed. How would you attack this problem? Im mainly looking for algorithmic advice, but if you ave code or pseudo-code to demonstrate, that would be helpful too.

• How do you handle the deletion of your model working with ViewModels and keeping them in sync ?

  Hello, these could be my entity relations: 1 Pupil has 1 Chair 1 Pupil has N Documents 1 Pupil has N Marks 1 Pupil has N IncidentReports etc... So with that sample I get 4 IEnumerable from my database put each into an ObservableCollection. Now I have 4 different Views each bound to one of those 4 collections. Lets assume I delete a single PupilViewModel in the AdministrationController which is the only View where I can delete a PupilViewModel. Now I have to inform 3 other Controller and their ObservableCollections about the one deleted PupilViewModel to keep the whole application synchronized... thats stupid somehow. Do you have any good advice on that scenario? AND it gets even worse. If I delete a schoolclass I have to sync the pupils everywhere AND the documents or incidentreports or marks... gush... o_O

  The eager loading on Ruby on Rails is not working properly for the following scenario. First we had a model called marks which has the following fields id, student, subject, mark the student is a string column which has the active directory login value, later on for reporting functionality we introduce another table called user which has the following fields id, ad_name, full_name Now on the Mark model, we have added the belongs to class belongs_to :student_details, :class_name = "User", :foreign_key = "student", :primary_key = "ad_name" and when loading using the ActiveRecord's find method we are passing in the include conditon for eager loading Marks.find(:all, :include = :reserved_user) but when the find is executed, for each and every mark a student select query executed. Is this a known bug in ROR? or am i missing something?

  Sorry for the question marks, but a simple (I think) question has an impossible solution. From file system, if I click on an image file "Properties | Details tab" I access to many metadata. I need to access from a WPF application to the Description properties (Title, Subject, Rating, Tag and Comment). In particular Tag. I have found a lot of articles, many are very old. A few in WPF and Imaging library. But no one access to that properties. So the question marks: are these properties on image? On file system? I think they are on the image..I don0t undestand where are these properties and why is so difficult to access... Can someone help me? Thanks in advance, Marco Parenzan

• How to estimate the quality of a web page?

  Hello, I'm doing a university project, that must gather and combine data on a user provided topic. The problem I've encountered is that Google search results for many terms are polluted with low quality autogenerated pages and if I use them, I can end up with wrong facts. How is it possible to estimate the quality/trustworthiness of a page? You may think "nah, Google engineers are working on the problem for 10 years and he's asking for a solution", but if you think about it, SE must provide up-to-date content and if it marks a good page as a bad one, users will be dissatisfied. I don't have such limitations, so if the algorithm accidentally marks as bad some good pages, that wouldn't be a problem.

  I am working through a book about Javascript and have encountered the following example of code designed to replace the value of the class attribute of a table header HTML element: th.className = th.className.replace(/asc/,"dsc"); th.className = th.className.replace(/dsc/,"asc"); Why is the first parameter of .replace, the current value of th.className, enclosed in forward slashes instead of quotation marks? Why not use quotation marks to enclose both parameters, not just the second one? Thank you in advance for any help given. • What is the best method of assessment for computer science students?

  This question is a bit more philosophical so feel free to remove if you like but it's been bugging me for the last 4 years! As a final year student I find that exams can be often be passed with a couple of days of cramming, without necessarily retaining or understanding the content i.e. a regurgitation of lecture notes is often enough to gain high marks. A friend of mine is about to graduate with an honours degree whose final year evaluation was based solely on practical work (a project, assignment marks and the creation of a poster) yet all of this work could have been completed by a third party. Personally I don't think either of these methods of assessment is sufficient as I am currently on track for a 1st class honours in artificial intelligence and computer science and believe this is mostly due to my skill in passing exams not my skill as a programmer or my vast in depth knowledge of any of the subjects I have "studied". Surely there is a better way to assess our skills - isn't there?

• MySQL on Windows-7 (64-bit) on 0.0.0.0:3306 rather than 127.0.0.1:3306

  I've just installed the latest production release of MySQL (64-bit) on my Windows 7 box. It was a straight vanilla install, using all defaults; but phpmyadmin can't see it at all. MySQL is configured as a service to start automatically, and I know it's running because the MySQL GUI tools work correctly. Doing a netstat -a, I see TCP 0.0.0.0:3306 Marks-Netbook:0 LISTENING when I'd expect to see TCP 127.0.0.1:3306 Marks-Netbook:0 LISTENING I don't know if this is the reason phpmyadmin can't connect, but suspect that it is probably the case. Can anybody confirm whether this is the likely cause, and/or suggest how I can reso;lve this?

• SSAS Compare: an intern’s journey

  About a month ago, David mentioned an intern working in the BI Tools Team. That intern happens to be me! In five weeks’ time, I’ll start my second year of Computer Science at the University of Cambridge and be a full-time student again, but for the past eight weeks, I’ve been living a completely different life. As Jon mentioned before, the teams here at Red Gate are small and everyone (including the interns!) is responsible for the product as a whole. I’ve attended planning sessions, UX tests, daily meetings, and everything else a full-time member of the team would; I had as much say in where we would go next with the product as anyone; I was able to see that what I was doing was an important part of the product from the feedback we got in the UX tests. All these things almost made me forget that this is just an internship and not my full-time job. First steps at Red Gate Being based in Cambridge, Red Gate has many Cambridge university graduates working for them. They also hire some Cambridge undergraduates for internships each summer. With its popularity with university graduates and its great working environment, Red Gate has managed to build up a great reputation. When I thought of doing an internship here in Cambridge, Red Gate just seemed to be the obvious choice for my first real work experience. On my first day at Red Gate, David, the lead developer for SSAS Compare, helped me settle in and explained what I’d be doing. My task was to improve the user experience of displaying differences between MDX scripts by syntax highlighting, script formatting, and improving the difference identification in the first place. David suggested how I should approach the problem, but left all the details and design decisions to me. That was when I realised how much independence and responsibility I’d have. What I’ve done If you launch the latest version of SSAS Compare and drill down to an MDX script difference, you can see the changes that have been made. In earlier versions, you could only see the scripts in plain text on both sides — either in black or grey, depending on whether they were the same or not. However, you couldn’t see exactly where the scripts were different, which was especially annoying when the two scripts were large – as they often are. Furthermore, if parts of the two scripts were formatted differently, they seemed to be different but were actually the same, which caused even more confusion and made it difficult to see where the differences were. All these issues have been fixed now. The two scripts are automatically formatted by the tool so that if two things are syntactically equivalent, they look the same – including case differences in keywords! The actual difference is highlighted in grey, which makes them easy to spot. The difference identification has been improved as well, so two scripts aren’t identified as different if there’s just a difference in meaningless whitespace characters, or when you have “select” on one side and “SELECT” on the other. We also have syntax highlighting, which makes it easier to read the scripts. How I did it In order to do the formatting properly, we decided to parse the MDX scripts. After some investigation into parser builders, I decided to go with the GOLD Parser builder and the bsn-goldparser .NET engine. GOLD Parser builder provides a fairly nice GUI to write, build, and test grammar in. We also liked the idea of separating the grammar building from parsing a text. The bsn-goldparser is one of many .NET engines for GOLD, and although it doesn’t support the newest features of GOLD Parser, it has “the ability to map semantic action classes to terminals or reduction rules, so that a completely functional semantic AST can be created directly without intermediate token AST representation, and without the need for glue code.” That makes it much easier for us to change the implementation in our program when we change the grammar. As bsn-goldparser is open source, and I wanted some more features in it, I contributed two new features which have now been merged to the project. Unfortunately, there wasn’t an MDX grammar written for GOLD already, so I had to write it myself. I was referencing MSDN to get the formal grammar specification, but the specification was all over the place, so it wasn’t that easy to implement and find. We’re aware that we don’t yet fully support all valid MDX, so sometimes you’ll just see the MDX script difference displayed the old way. In that case, there is some grammar construct we don’t yet recognise. If you come across something SSAS Compare doesn’t recognise, we’d love to hear about it so we can add it to our grammar. When some MDX script gets parsed, a tree is produced. That tree can then be processed into a list of inlines which deal with the correct formatting and can be outputted to the screen. Doing all this has led me to many new technologies and projects I haven’t worked with before. This was my first experience with C# and Visual Studio, although I have done things in Java before. I have learnt how to unit test with NUnit, how to do dependency injection with Ninject, how to source-control code with SVN and Mercurial, how to build with TeamCity, how to use GOLD, and many other things. What’s coming next Sadly, my internship comes to an end this week, so there will be less development on MDX difference view for a while. But the team is going to work on marking the differences better and making it consistent with difference indication in the top part of comparison window, and will keep adding support for more MDX grammar so you can see the differences easily in every comparison you make. • Has anyone been able to convert a site's media content from flash to html5?

  I'm looking to convert a site from Flash based video to HTML5, the current video uses time marks to display slides (kind of like how youtube has ads on their videos). But the difference between Youtube and my site is that it doesn't show up inside the video, the slides are displayed next to the video. Is there any way I can accomplish this with HTML5? Or do I have to use Javascript for this? If this isn't clear enough, please let me know.
