• Visual Studio Publish using Web Deploy gives SSL Exception?

  Im trying to use Web Deploy with arvixe hosting. I enabled Publishing with the host but I get SSL exception when I hit publish. Is anybody familiar with the following exception: Error 59 Web deployment task failed.(Could not complete the request to remote agent URL 'https://yew.arvixe.com:8172/msdeploy.axd?site=mywebsite.com'.) Could not complete the request to remote agent URL 'https://yew.arvixe.com:8172/msdeploy.axd?site=mywebsite.com'. The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure. 0 0 myapplication_MVC4 Thanks

• Unwanted SQLite inserted in \bin

  I am using Visual Studio 2010 and using web deployment to promote the .Net MVC site to specific environments. I installed Elmah, and it worked great on my DEV environment, but when I pushed TEST, I got exceptions because SQLite was not a good format. I am not using SQLite in Elmah or otherwise that I know of. I have removed all visible refernces to SQLite, and I have removed the .dll from all configuration bin directories. But it still gets inserted with each build. I realize the exception problem is that SQLite cannot be built for CPU Any, and my environments vary from x86 to x64. But I would prefer SQLite to not even be present. I have since uninstalled Elmah, and SQLite is still inserted into the \bin directory. I have now re-installed Elmah, and I manually delete the SQLite.dll from \bin after each build. How can I determine what is causing SQLite to be inserted into my \bin after each build?

  We are looking into the possibility of upgrading to Team Foundation Server 2008 for our development team. One of our primary reasons is some of the deployment capabilities surrounding BizTalk 2009, but I am curious what other benefits there are for other projects outside of BizTalk. Some of our interests so far are moving to a one click build and deploy process, the addition of unit tests, and continuous integration. Some definite steps forward for the company I work for. What other benefits or information should I look at as I pitch this to upper management? I am looking for technical reasons, money is a not really a concern for this discussion.

• Deploy java (command line) app using Netbeans / ant

  I've finally managed to create a Netbeans project out of an old standalone (not Web-) Java application which consisted only out of single .java sources. Now I have basically two questions regarding Netbeans Subversion interaction and application deployment: Do you check in all the Netbeans project files into the repository, normally? If I build the project using Netbeans (or ant) I get a .jar file and some additional jar libraries. In order for the app to run properly on the server, some additional config files and directories (log/ for example) are needed. The application itself is a J2SE application (no frameworks) which runs from the command line on a Linux platform. How would you deploy and install such an application? It would also be nice if I could see what version of app is currently installed (maybe by appending the version number to the installed app path). Thanks for any tips.

My constraint is that I use Facebook Connect (Facebook Graph now) so I need to have the dev and prod on the same domain and server. (to be able to log in and test the features) I thought I will edit the CodeIgniter Index.php to redirect if I have a specific user agent (I can edit the one of my firefox) You think it's a good Idea or you have a better one ? And now comes the eternal question : how can I deploy this the easy way ? should I use Capistrano or Phing ? or simply a script with SVN ? Please help me, I'm totally new to this Deployment thing. I used to work directly in production for my little websites or on other domains. but now it's not possible anymore.

  hi guys, i was wondering how could i deploy/make it into an installer for an app which is created using vs 2008 express. i know that the setup and deployment feature is only available via the full version of visual studio right?   I'm trying to set up a batch file to automatically deploy a php app to a web server. Basically, what I want is an entirely automated process: I would just give it a revision number from the repository and it would then export the files, upload via ftp and then update deployment info at the repo host (codebase). However, I'm starting from scratch here. How would I set up a batch file to accept a variable when it was run? For example, the command myfile.bat /revision 42 should deploy revision 42 to my server. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

  Yesterday I tried to deploy a Business Data Connectivity Model project created in Visual Studio 2010 to my SharePoint 2010 test server (all RTM versions), but during the deployment of the solution, SharePoint threw my following error: Add Solution:  Adding solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...  Deploying solution 'BCSDemo2.wsp'...Error occurred in deployment step 'Add Solution': The default web application could not be determined. Set the SiteUrl property in feature BCSDemo2_Feature1 to the URL of the desired site and retry activation.Parameter name: properties A little bit of searching on the internet taught me that I was not the only one having this issue, actually Paul Andrew describes how to solve it in this post. Although Paul describes what to do, his explanation is not, let’s say, very elaborate. :-) So let’s describe the steps a little bit more in detail: Create a new Business Data Connectivity Model project in Visual Studio 2010 and (optionally) implement all your code, change the model etc. When you try to deploy you get the error mentioned above. To fix it, in the Solution Explorer, navigate to and open the Feature1.Template.xml file (the name could be different if you decided to give your feature a different name of course). Add the following XML in the Feature element that’s already there (replace the Value with the URL of your site of course):  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties>The resulting XML should look like:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><Feature xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/">  <Properties>    <Property Key='SiteUrl' Value='http://spf.u2ucourse.com'/>  </Properties></Feature> Deploy the solution, now without any issues. :-) What happens now, is that when Visual Studio creates the SharePoint Solution (the WSP file), it will use the Feature template XML to generate the Feature manifest, which will now include the missing property.

• Aspnet_merge error has no detail

  I have been attempting to add a Deployment Project to my web app. When I build it, I get a message "An error occurred when merging assemblies: Exception from HRESULT: 0x806D0004". There is no other detail, like ILMerge error, or Duplicate Name. I have "verbosity" set to "Diagnostic", and this is the output: Command: C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\WebDeployment\v8.0\aspnet_merge.exe "\...XXX...\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects\XXX_deploy\Debug" -o XXX_deploy -debug -copyattrs The "AspNetMerge" task is using "aspnet_merge.exe" from "C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\WebDeployment\v8.0\aspnet_merge.exe". Utility to merge precompiled ASP.NET assemblies. An error occurred when merging assemblies: Exception from HRESULT: 0x806D0004 C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\WebDeployment\v8.0\Microsoft.WebDeployment.targets(474,9): error MSB6006: "aspnet_merge.exe" exited with code 1. I added a single new form named Default. I have even tried renaming that form to DefaultX, just in case there was another Default out there. I still get the error. What else can I look for? • CakePHP, CodeIgniter or Rails for multi-user Tumblr clone?

  I'm about to start building a tumblr clone that handles multiple users (so premade clones like Gelato won't cut it) and I'm not sure which framework I'd like to build this is. Right now, I'm only intending to build a prototype. Something I can get a dozen friends on to test the concept and grow to maybe a couple hundred users to prove the market, so I'm not worried about long term scale. My biggest concern right now is quick deployment. I'd like to get from zero to signups in as short a time as possible, with as little customization to the framework of choice as possible. I have experience with PHP, but not Ruby. However, I don't think the learning curve would be too steep so I'm not ruling out rails. I just want the framework that is most appropriate for a system like a multi-user tumblr clone so that I can build it with as little hassle, and as quickly, as possible. If anyone has experience with a similar project, or with these frameworks and can offer an insightful perspective, I'd be very appreciative. Thanks for taking the time to read. Am I doing anything wrong? I'm just starting with Vlad on the assumption it was super-easy to set up. Had played a bit with cap in the past, and I do like Vlad idea.

  How do software houses like Microsoft or anti-virus companies patch/update their software? Anti virus companies dont send the complete executable; only new virus signatures I suppose. Similarly, Ive noticed microsoft sends certain files to the '$NtUninstallKB......$' folder that it creates when it the windows update program runs. I suppose there is an installer in each such folder there that replaces only those dlls that need to be updated or fixed. Questions Is there a universal method for doing this or does each house employ their own methods? I dont want to re-send the entire application to each individual client. Suppose if only certain dlls need to be changed or maybe some more added, how should I go about planning my final compiled application. Do I need to look at separating my application into multiple assemblies? If yes, then is there some compilation method that is allows to pack specific classes into a particular dll? What I have put down here are my thoughts on the subject and I could be wrong. Could anyone throw some light on this please? I am looking at implementing such a deployment and patch management technique for the .net platform. Thanks for your time.

  Hi, I am learning EJB3 from last few days. I have many questions regarding EJB, application servers and deployment of EJB. To start with, I have created one simple helloworld stateless session bean but I don't know how to deploy it on server. It has single bean class, bean interface and one servlet client. I have used eclipse to develop this project. None of the books that I read gives step by step details about how to put EJB on server and how to access those beans. I have JBoss 6 server and I also have JEE budle downloaded from sun website. Does this JEE bundle contains Glassfish server? or do I need to download it seperately? Can anyone please give me step by step details of how to put my bean and its client on server (JBoss or JEE)? and why do we need to include bean interface class in EJB client code? I mean either we need to keep client and bean in same package or if we keep them in seperate packages we need to import bean interfaces in client code. Am I right? Thanks and Regards, Chandrashekhar

• Splitting build cross the network?

  Is there a known solution for splitting build process cross the network machines? Use case: We are an average software development company. We own around 50 development workstations (Quad Core 2.66Ghz, 4 GB ram, 200 GB raid). No need to tell that at any single moment not every machine is loaded to the max. There are 5 to 15 projects running simultaneously at any single moment. Obviously all of them are continuously build on server, than deployed to proper environment. Single project build is taking from 3 to 15 minutes. The problem: Whenever we build 5 projects in a row the last project is going to be ready after around 25 - 50 minutes. Building in parallel does not solve the problem (build is only a part of the game, than you need to deploy, run tests etc.) YES the correct solution is to add another build server, but "That involves buying new Expensive hardware, and we already spent a lot!". Yea, right(damn them)! Anyway. What about splitting build among developers workstation? Lets say whenever we need to build project "A" we check 5 workstations and start build on all that are not overloaded. The build can be canceled by a developer if he really needs all the power of his machine as long as there is at least 1 machine that is still building. After build is finished deployment can be performed to a proper environment (hosted on some server, not on workstation :) ). The bigger the company the more this makes sense to me. Anyone tried something like this? Are there any good practices? Any helpful software? (90% of the projects are .net C#)

• are there java based auto-updating tools other than WebStart & Eclipse P2?

  Hi, I am working on a java based application and we are looking to ease our deployment of updates. Up until now, we've always simply sent out new install packs & had the sysadmin's on our customer sites roll out the upgrades - painful for a large number of users. what I'd like to do is something similar to java webstart (or eclipse p2) - when the application starts, it checks for updates in a specified location and then downloads the updates prior to starting. But here's my problem - I want more control over what's done outside of the scope of plugins & jar files. For example: I'd like to be able to upate my JVM (we ship a modified version with additional security features). I need to install DLL's - possibly local to the jar files, sometimes to windows Occasiontally run MSI's to install windows components (e.g. printer drivers). I need to modify config files & the registry. I have found a few applications that support this (such as AppLifeUpdate at http://www.kineticjump.com/) but they tend to be .NET focused and it seems a bit perverse to introduce a .NET dependancy on a java application ;) I know I could write my own here, but if there is already a 3rd party library out there that supports this kind of facility, then it would make my life a lot easier. So, has anyone else had a similar problem & knows of some products I could look at? Thanks, Brian.

• Git Workflow With Capistrano

  I'm trying to get my head around a good git workflow using capistrano. I've found a few good articles, but I'm either not grasping completely what they're suggesting (likely) or they're somewhat lacking. Here's kind of what I had in mind so far, but I get caught up when to merge back into the master branch (i.e. before moving to stage? after?) and trying to hook it into capistrano for deployments: Make sure you’re up to date with all the changes made on the remote master branch by other developers git checkout master git pull Create a new branch that pertains to the particular bug you're trying to fix git checkout -b bug-fix-branch Make your changes git status git add . git commit -m "Friendly message about the commit" So, this is usually where I get stuck. At this point, I have a master branch that is healthy and a new bug-fix-branch that contains my (untested -- other than unit tests) changes. If I want to push my changes to stage (through cap staging deploy), do I have to merge my changes back into the master branch (I'd prefer not to since it seems like master should be kept free of untested code)? Do I even deploy from master (or should I be tagging a release first and then modifying my production.rb file to deploy from that tag)? git-deployment seems to address some of these workflow issues, but I can't seem to find out how on earth it actually hooks into cap staging deploy and cap production deploy. Thoughts? I assume there's a likely canonical way to do this, but I either can't find it or I'm too new to git to recognize that I have found it. Help!

• Emulating Visual Studio's Web Application "publish" at the command line

  Hi, I am trying to automate my deployment process and am now thoroughly confused. I know that there are many questions on stackoverflow about this, but they all have different solutions and none of them work. I have a Web Application project which I usually publish by right-clicking and selecting "Publish". I get a dialog box where I use the following options: Build configuration: Release Publish method: File system Target location: C:\Deployments\MyWebsite Replace matching files with local copies I should mention that in the properties of the project I have "Items to deploy" set to "Only files needed to run this application". After running this, my entire solution is built, dependencies are resolved, build events are run, web.config transformations are applied and the website is copied to C:\Deployments\MyWebsite, although non-required files such as code-behind files are not copied. I have not been able to replicate this... in fact at this stage I'm not even sure which command line tool am I supposed to be using - msbuild, msdeploy or aspnet_compiler? This guy asks almost the same question but his solution doesn't work at all. For example, build events do not run correctly because the macros are not resolved. Whats more, the files do not get copied into the correct directory at all... I can't even begin to explain what happens!

• One big executable or many small DLL's?

  Over the years my application has grown from 1MB to 25MB and I expect it to grow further to 40, 50 MB. I don't use DLL's, but put everything in this one big executable. Having one big executable has certain advantages: Installing my application at the customer is really: copy and run. Upgrades can be easily zipped and sent to the customer There is no risk of having conflicting DLL's (where the customer has version X of the EXE, but version Y of the DLL) The big disadvantage of the big EXE is that linking times seem to grow exponentially. Additional problem is that a part of the code (let's say about 40%) is shared with another application. But again, this has a serious impact on compilation times (everyone compiles the common code again on his PC) and on linking times. The question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2387908/grouping-dlls-for-use-in-executable mentions the possibility of mixing DLL's in one executable, but it looks like this still requires you to link all functions manually in your application (using LoadLibrary, GetProcAddress, ...). What is your opinion on executable sizes, the use of DLL's and the best 'balance' between easy deployment and easy/fast development?

• How to share the credentials between Webform and Winform?

  Hi! Question: I want to make a login form at the Clickonce deployment webpage, and only allow the authenticated users to download the application. and I want the downloaded application to use the same credentials entered at the webpage, without prompting the users to enter the credentials again. Details: I have an application(Windows Client) which needs customized settings for different users. the application is deployed through ClickOnce. Currently, the users are given the ClickOnce webpage URL, then download the application from there. after download and running the application, the application prompts users with a login form. If their credentials are authenticated, the application loads the customized settings from the server's database according to the credentials given. The problem is, any unauthenticated users can download the application if they just know the ClickOnce deployement webpage's URL. Unauthenticated users won't be able to run the application anyways, because the application asks for credentials when started, but I want to prevent the unauthenticated users from downloading the application at all. Am I asking the wrong question maybe? Your help is much appreciated!

  I recently configured an EC2 instance with a Git deployment workflow that resembles Heroku, but I can't seem to figure out how Heroku prevents the Git post-receive hook from outputting 'remote:' on each line.
