  • Is DHCP required on a Win2003 secondary DNS server?

    - by Mark
We have a secondary DNS server and we've been noticing that the DNS.exe process is getting rather large. (Like, rebooting the server large) I read something somewhere that 2k3 has two relevant memory leak issues, one is the DNS (supposedly fixed in 2007), and another for DHCP. DHCP is running on this server, but I don't see why. Hence my question. Is the DHCP service required for (secondary) DNS to function? Server has: 24 cores (X5650), 8GB RAM

  • Making to the DNS on two different VPNs play nice.

Setup: I have two separate networks I need to connect to at the same time. VPN 1 PPTP IP : 192.168.2.0/24 DNS : 192.168.2.32; 192.168.2.34 (Windows 2003) Domain : old.com Forwarder : 192.168.2.1 (Gateway running DNS) DD-WRT VPN 2 OpenVPN using Routing -- I'm going to switch to bridging IP : 192.168.10.0/24 DNS : 192.168.10.10 (Windows 2008) Domain : xyz.dc Forwarder : 192.168.10.1 (Gateway running DNS) ClearOS When I'm connected I would like to resolve host names on both networks without fully qualifying them.

  • Ask a DNS server what sites it hosts - and how to possibly prevent misuse

    - by Exit
I've got a server which I host my company website as well as some of my clients. I noticed a domain which I created, but never used, was being attacked by a poke and hope hacker. I imagine that the hacker collected the domain from either hitting my DNS server and requesting what domains are hosted. So, in the interest of prevention and better server management, how would I ask my own DNS server (Linux CentOS 4) what sites are being hosted on it? Also, is there a way to prevent these types of attacks by hiding this information? I would assume that DNS servers would need to keep some information public, but I'm not sure if there is something that most hosts do to help prevent these bandwidth wasting poke and hope attacks. Thanks in advance.

  • DNS lookup failures while accessing my website some proxy error

    - by Bond
Here is a situation until today morning, every thing has been working perfectly fine with me. From past 6 months many of my domains wer accessible as http://site1.myserver.com http://site2.myserver.com http://site3.myserver.com http://site4.myserver.com All these were Reverse Proxy configurations. I have some applications on each of them. until today morning some people reported me that http://site1.myserver.com/app1 is not working but http://site1.myserver.com is accessible but http://site2.myserver.com is accessible but http://site3.myserver.com is accessible but http://site4.myserver.com not accessible In past 6 months I have not changed any of these Apache configurations (things were working perfectly so) The error which can be seen in browser are while accessing http://site1.myserver.com/app1 Proxy Error The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request GET /app1. Reason: DNS lookup failure for: myserver.com and same is the error for http://site4.myserver.com So what should I check in I have checked all the apache logs to an extent which I could see and 192.168.1.25 - - [10/Jan/2011:14:50:48 +0530] "GET /app1 HTTP/1.1" 502 531 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3" Mon Jan 10 14:27:42 2011] [error] (113)No route to host: proxy: HTTP: attempt to connect to 192.168.1.3:80 (192.168.1.3) failed [Mon Jan 10 14:27:42 2011] [error] ap_proxy_connect_backend disabling worker for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:44 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:44 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:44 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:45 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:45 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:45 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:45 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:46 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:47 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:48 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:48 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:27:48 2011] [error] proxy: HTTP: disabled connection for (192.168.1.3) [Mon Jan 10 14:35:29 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: myserver.com returned by /app1 [Mon Jan 10 14:35:30 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: myserver.com returned by /app1 [Mon Jan 10 14:35:30 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: myserver.com returned by /app1 [Mon Jan 10 14:50:30 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: myserver.com returned by /app1 [Mon Jan 10 14:50:48 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: myserver.com returned by /app1 and for site4.myserver.com I get [Mon Jan 10 14:57:40 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by /favicon.ico [Mon Jan 10 14:57:40 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by /favicon.ico [Mon Jan 10 14:57:43 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by /favicon.ico [Mon Jan 10 15:02:38 2011] [error] [client <some external IP>] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by / [Mon Jan 10 15:03:04 2011] [error] [client <some external IP>] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by /, referer: http://site4.myserver.com/ [Mon Jan 10 15:03:04 2011] [error] [client <some external IP>] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by /favicon.ico [Mon Jan 10 15:03:08 2011] [error] [client <some external IP>] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by /, referer: http://site4.myserver.com/ [Mon Jan 10 15:03:08 2011] [error] [client <some external IP>] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by /favicon.ico [Mon Jan 10 15:03:10 2011] [error] [client <some external IP>] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by /, referer: http://site4.myserver.com/ [Mon Jan 10 15:06:21 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by / [Mon Jan 10 15:06:31 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by /, referer: http://site4.myserver.com/ [Mon Jan 10 15:26:03 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.25] proxy: DNS lookup failure for: site4.myserver.com returned by /

  • Cloudmin KVM DNS hostnames not working

    - by dannymcc
I have got a new server which has Cloudmin installed. It's working well and I can create and manage VM's as expected. The server came with a /29 subnet and I requested an additional /29 subnet to allow for more virtual machines. I didn't want to replace the existing /29 subnet with a /28 because that would have caused disruption with my existing VM's. To make life easier I decided to configure a domain name for the Cloudmin host server to allow for automatic hostname setup whenever I create a new virtual machine. I have a domain name (example.com) and I have created an NS record as follows: NS kvm.example.com 123.123.123.123 A kvm.example.com 123.123.123.123 In the above example the IP address is that of the host server, I also have two /29 subnets routed to the server. Now, I've added the two subnets to the Cloudmin administration panel as follows: I've tried to hide as little information as possible without giving all of the server details away! If I ping kvm.example.com I get a response from 123.123.123.123, if I ping the newly created virtual machine (example.kvm.example.com) it fails, and if I ping the IP address that's been assigned to the new virtual machine (from the second subnet) it fails. Am I missing anything vital? Does this look (from what little information I can show) like it's setup correctly? Any help/pointers would be appreciated. For reference the Cloudmin documentation I am using as a guide is http://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/cloudmin/gettingstarted

  • How to setup GoDaddy dns forwarding

    - by skerit
I have a VPS in England and a hosting account with hostgator. I use GoDaddy to manage my domain name settings. My VPS is mainly used for mail and certain other services. The actual site is hosted at hostgator I had a cname called "www" which would point to mydomain.com, at hostgator All the rest would point to my vps. (The "A" host, @) Now Hostgator lost my original domain name, so pointing to that leads to a fake website. But you can't just make www point to an ip adres. No. I tried adding an "A" host which would point to the hostgator ip-adres and then I would point the "www" cname to that "A" host. But that does not work. Can anyone shed some light on this?

  • does ping command to a dns name uses DNS PTR type messages?

    - by TiagoM
Okay I cant understand this, when I try to ping to a machine on my network using the name associated I get a response from that machine, thats normal.. But there are messages that the sender sends to the top machine (SOA) that I dont understand.. First he sends a type A and gets a response with the IP associated to the name used on the ping command, but after that.. the sender only sends (before each ping) messages of type PTR to the (SOA) Saying this: Standar query 0xf66c PTR 12.45.168.192.in-addr.arpa and SOA respond with: Standard query response 0xf66c No such name And before each ping they do this, I dont know why... I notice this using wireshark, thanks alot again for accept me here, being able to get some answer :)

  • Ping, firewall or DNS problem on Win Server 2008 R2

    - by Fred Kaiser
Hi there, I've installed windows server 2008 as a VM for the developers here to work on. Installed SQL Server 2008 as well as IIS7. I am not quite sure why, I can remote into that machine using the name I gave to it (winserverdev) but the guys that are supposed to use the bloody thing can't. One very interesting thing is that I can connect but I can't ping... not the name nor the IP address. Is there anything that I should be looking in order to make it work? Any ideas are welcome. Thanks heaps in advance, I really appreciate it. Cheers, Fred Kaiser

  • How important are PTR records for Email Servers?

    - by Kyle Brandt
Does anyone know of any studies done to show how much email will be rejected if there is not ptr record for the SMTP banner name of an email server? Are reverse checks always done when enabled, or is it sometimes configured so if an spam program considers an email 'iffy', the reverse check is done?

  • Assigning multiple IPv6 addresses on a Server

    - by andrewk
Let me uncover my intent. My host provides hundreds of IPV6 addresses free, but charge for an IPV4 address. I have several sites under one server and I was wondering if I can give each site/domain it's own ipv6 address. Is that even possible? If so how? I've read quite a bit about ipv6 but I do not understand it as clear as I'd like. My main goal is, for each domain/site to have it's own unique IP, so someone can't do a reverse ip look up and see what sites I have on that server. Thanks in advance for the patience.

  • Using DNS in iproute2

    - by Oliver
In my setup I can redirect the default gateway based on the source address. Let's say a user is connected through tun0 (10.2.0.0/16) is redirect to another vpn. That works fine! ip rule add from 10.2.0.10 lookup vpn1 In a second rule I redirect the default gateway to another gateway if the user access a certain ip adress: ip rule add from 10.2.0.10 to 94.142.154.71 lookup vpn2 If I access the page on 94.142.154.71 (myip.is) the user is correctly routed and I can see the ip of the second vpn. On any other pages the ip address of vpn1 is shown. But how do I tell iproute2 that all request at e. g. google.com should be redirected through vpn2?

  • Reverse DNS Lookup from the Command Line

    - by user41322
I'd like to get a list of all domains pointed to a certain IP address. Is there a way to get this information from the command line? Nothing like "host", "nslookup" or "dig -x". Those return the hostname of the IP address which, while helpful, is only part of what I want returned.

  • DNS lookup of GTLD servers using dig

I ran the following command on linux >> dig . I got the following response ;; AUTHORITY SECTION: . 281 IN SOA A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. NSTLD.VERISIGN-GRS.COM. 2010032400 1800 900 604800 86400 why does the response not contain the IP address of the root server? what do the numbers at the end of the reply mean. one of them is probably (definitely) the date. why does it report 2 root servers a.root and nstld.verisign? when i send the following queries dig com. ;; AUTHORITY SECTION:com. 51 IN SOA a.gtld-servers.net. nstld.verisign-grs.com. 1269425283 1800 900 604800 86400 again i do not get the ip addresses. when i query for the gtld server specified i can get the ip address. why is the response of dig net. same as that of dig com. except that instead of 51 we have 19 in the response.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS - One IP, multiple servers

    - by Blu Dragon
I need opinions and examples on how to best to accomplish the setup I am looking for. I have a public-facing AD domain server with one public IP address. I have setup an external zone for example.com and I successfully have my own name servers pointing to it at ns0.example.com and ns1.example.com. I also have an internal zone for my private network at home.example.com. I am behind a router with the domain server in the DMZ. I want dev.example.com to be accessible from the outside world over https and to point to internal IP address 192.168.1.78. Likewise, I want www.example.com to be accessible from the outside world and point to internal IP address 192.168.1.79. Both dev and www servers are CentOS 5.6 VMs running inside of Hyper-V on the domain server (bad idea I know but I am limited on hardware atm). What is best way to achieve this? From what I have read and researched on Google, I may need to setup a reverse proxy but I am not sure how well that will work with SSL.

  • DNS server failure when forwarding

    - by Abraham Katz
I run Bind 9 on a Ubuntu 12.04 server. I want this server to be a sort of a "wrapper" over my default server, so that it will respond to "domain_name.My_TLD" itself and forward requests to any other request. The server resides in a domain (Disconnected from the internet), so I configured it to zone "company_domain."{ type forward; forwarders { 1.2.3.4 }; #the DC's ip }; When i query it about sommething.company_domain. it sends a query to the DC and gets a response, but it returns "server failure". What can cause that? Cheers, Abraham
