  • Flushing writes in buffer of Memory Controller to DDR device

    At some point in my code, I need to push the writes in my code all the way to the DIMM or DDR device. My requirement is to ensure the write reaches the row,ban,column of the DDR device on the DIMM. I need to read what I've written to the main memory. I do not want caching to get me the value. Instead after writing I want to fetch this value from main memory(DIMM's). So far I've been using Intel's x86 instruction wbinvd(write back and invalidate cache). However this means the caches and TLB are flushed. Write-back requests go to the main memory. However, there is a reasonable amount of time this data might reside in the write buffer of the Memory Controller( Intel calls it integrated memory controller or IMC). The Memory Controller might take some more time depending on the algorithm that runs in the Memory Controller to handle writes. Is there a way I force all existing or pending writes in the write buffer of the memory controller to the DRAM devices ?? What I am looking for is something more direct and more low-level than wbinvd. If you could point me to right documents or specs that describe this I would be grateful. Generally, the IMC has a several registers which can be written or read from. From looking at the specs for that for the chipset I could not find anything useful.     I'm not sure which, but I just had a heck of a time getting my computer to boot up and not freeze. It would run until it finished booting windows, then everything would freeze. This happened until I turned off turboboost and all the c states on the processor. What could be causing this? Is the processor going bad?

    I have recently installed a new heat sink & fan combination on my Core 2 Quad since my CPU was hitting about 70C under load. This has managed reduce temperatures while running Prime95 to about 54C, which I'm taking as a win (this is ~30 minutes after fitting). I'm a little confused though. The temperature readings given above are for CORE temperatures, but HWMonitor is showing a 5th "CPU" temperature (4 temperatures being the individual core temps) which is showing 21C idle, when idle temperatures for the cores vary between 37C and 42C. I guess there are two questions here: Are my CPU/Core temperatures decent, and is it safe to overclock when these are stock clock temperatures? I gather that the maximum safe operating temperature for a C2Q is ~70C, so which temperature should I measure against, the core temperatures (which are higher), or the CPU temperature reading?

    So I recently switched towers and now, all of a sudden, I'm getting this error message as soon as I boot my system. The error message reads "Primary Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible". This has really been frustrating since there's NO Primary Slave Drive even installed in my computer!! I have one hard drive installed which is recognized as the Primary Master & a DVD Drive which is recognized as the Secondary Master. My old system ran flawlessly. I'm beginning to think maybe my motherboard is bugging out cuz I fail to understand how it can be telling me that a "nonexistent" drive is incompatible. Any suggestions??

  • Core i7 on linux loses its multithreading capability after suspend

    On my debian-linux system, with a core i7 920 , each time I resume after the command "pm-suspend" (suspend to RAM), mutlithreading capabilities almost disappear. More specifically, two distinct programs can use 2 distinct cores at full rate, but a single program is limited to only one core (for one instance of a multithreaded program as well as multiple instances of a monothreaded program, e.g. "make -j 4" for gcc). So I end up rebooting the system. Any help appreciated!

  • How to install QEMU on Damn Small Linux?

    i'm trying to install QEMU on a Damn Small Linux installation in order to emulate pentium features in a 486 computer. Though DSL was descontinued, it's the only linux that runs reasonably on the 486 processor, most recent kernels doesn't even boot on 486 architecture. I tried Tiny Core Linux, but it doesn't work in 486, so i seem to have no escape here. The most recent image of DSL is from 2008, it uses kernel 2.4.x, and i couldn't find a way to compile QEMU on it. Firstly, it lacks several compile tools needed for compiling it, and, it have several dependency problems. I tried some pre-compiled packages, but the only one that worked was a QEMU 5.2 RPM package (it didn't had dependency problems), and it was way too old, it wasn't capable of running windows yet, it just gave me the option of emulating a code, not a full OS as windows, and it also didn't give me the option to choose which architecture i wanted it to emulate (-cpu option). Can anyone help me with this? Also, if someone can think of some alternative to it, i'd be grateful. Thanks.

But what happen when motherboard for a desktop that supports( and had install) more RAM than the procesor can handle?(aka:procesor Max Memory Size). Is there any advantage to have a MB that hold a bigger RAM capacity than the CPU? If so, how can this be translate using in a program like Adobe After Effects, RAM preview? thanks

  • Can I put a laptop Core i7 CPU in a desktop?

    One of the most important thing to me for a CPU is a good mix between speed and heat. For example five years ago I bought a Core 2 Duo 6300 (max TDP 65W): I put a big heatsink on the CPU, no fans (I do hate moving parts and noise) and it worked like a charm and very silently for five years (and it still work but five years later I wouldn't mind a faster CPU and a faster memory controller and more memory). I consider a max TDP of 130W unacceptable (like some high-end Core i7 have), for several reasons. So I was wondering: can I build a desktop and put a Core i7 CPU meant to be used in laptop in it? For example I was thinking about the Core i7 740QM (max TDP 45W [!]). Are these compatible with desktop Core i7 motherboards? (for example on NewEgg it says that the "CPU socket type" for the Core i7 740QM is PGA988, I've not too sure about what this is)

    I have windows XP professional installed on my desktop. It shows up the following errors - Physical memory dumping blue screen. : This aint a new problem, i have been facing this problem ever since i bought this systme. initially the maintainence guy said it was a faulty hard drive and i have got it replaced 3 times already in the past 1 yr. The system gets utterly slow after a usage of around 2-3 months and then these errors crop up and i have to reinstall my windows to keep away these errors. But this time,its been only a week and the blue screen has come up 3 times. What can be the actual cause of the error?? Mine is an assembled machine, its a core 2duo with gigabyte motherboard and a 1 gb ram, 160 gb seagate hdd. please help me its a seriously annoying problem.   • Passive cooling a Pentium III

    Looking at running pfSense on an old P3 866Mhz. It's noisy, I'd like to passively-cool it, downclocking is ok as this is more than enough horsepower for my needs at home. Obviously I'm cheaping out here: wonder if I bigger heatsink will do and how much case flow I need (it's in a standard mid-tower ATX case).
