  • MS Office 2007 std, on a 2008R2 RDS session - additional language and proofing tools question

    Hi all, I have a terminal server, with a bunch of users running MS Office 2007 std in. Some of them have recently been asking for better multilanguage support. Since I'm in a select agreement, I've gone into the Volume Licensing Service Center and downloaded the following three ISOs: Office Multilanguage Packs 2007 (DVD) Office Multilanguage Packs 2007 (CD) Office Multilanguage Pack 2007 Service Pack 1 But having mounted the ISOs in my RDS host, I still can't install anything they contain. I am quite probably doing something wrong, or maybe I need to be running Office pro version? please F1

  • How to set start screen tiles' language in Windows 8

    I've installed English Windows 8 x64 on my notebook and selected Slovenian as locale during installation. The problem I'm having now is that my tiles on start screen display in Slovenian even though my installation is English. I've also edited languages, adding English (British) on the list and putting it on top of Slovenian, but tiles still use Slovenian... All previous Windows versions were able to have English UI with a particular locale for input, time, dates, currency etc. How can I do the same in Windows 8?

    A building with 4 floors, each floor is divided as follows; 15 users for accounting, 15 users for finance and 15 users for marketing (i.e 45 user in each floor). Data center is located on the ground floor, with 45 servers to be divided into 15 for all the accounting users in the four floors, another 15 for the finance and the last 15 for the marketing. (i.e each 15 server for each one of the above categories are separated from the other 15 and so on) What is the proper subnetting design for such scenario? Knowing that we are allowed to use anything we want!

  • Value of the HTML5 lang attribute

    I'm working on a website which will offer localized content following the language+region approach as described on this W3.org page (e.g. fr-CA for Canadian French content, and fr-FR for "French French" content). As we consider content for each language+region to be unique, it is crucial to us that search engines properly identify and serve the content accordingly. By looking up on the Internet (e.g. this question), it appears that most people recommend the use of an ISO639 language code in the HTML lang attribute to describe the content language. Following this recommendation, we would en up using <html lang="fr"> which wouldn't enable the differentiation between the aforementioned language+region combinations. When reviewing the HTML4 specification, it seems that using language+region as a language code would be perfectly OK, as the en-US example is given as one possible value. However I couldn't find any confirmation of this in the HTML5 specification which doesn't seem to provide any example as to the possible allowed values. From there I tried to get a de facto answer by looking at what the web giants are doing.   • SEO & Multilingual: would be this a good practise?

    I am currently making a bilingual website and I'd like to get nice SEO results of course. Here's my idea: The internal links would be composed of the "www" subdomain so that people can share links regardless of their language. Anyway, their language is determined by the HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE PHP variable. So, they would see http:// www.site.com/mydocument/123 in their adress bar and never see any links like "http:// fr.site.com/mydocument/123" or "http://en.site.com/mydocument/123" The user can always switch the page's language thanks to links in the footer. The switching language link would be : http:// fr.site.com/mydocument/123 , and clicking on it would change his language session and redirects the user to http:// www.site.com/mydocument/123 In case of a crawling bot: I read that if the HTTP_USER_LANGUAGE variable was missing then it's a crawling bot. So, in that case, we set the defaut language as English. Each page, as I mentionned earlier, has a link for another language: On the page: http:// www.site.com/document/1323, the link http:// fr.site.com/document/1323 can be seen by the bot and be crawled. What do you think about this practise ? Would I get good SEO results for each language ?

    Today we got the executive green light to proceed with changing from a Domino platform to Exchange. The business prefers Exchange for a messaging platform. (even though IMO IBM Domino is fine - if it aint broke, don't fix it but it was not my call). I have been put in charge of Domino to Exchange process goes smoothly as possible. I have also been told to put together costs for this project. I have some questions and concerns re: network design, licensing, costs: The current setup is as follows. 1 HQ office (100 users), 1 secondary office (50 users), 5 branch offices (under 10 users). 5 different email domains Windows Server 2003 functional level with a few 2008 R2 Servers Lotus Domino Notes Servers (one in each office) Ironmail Appliance Public Domino Web Mail server Majority G5+ Proliant Servers Domino Blackberry Enterprise license and server No VoIP phones What are the basic hardware requirements for Exchange 2007 or 2010? Can I simply purchase a single physical server? Will each office require an Exchange server or possibly additional servers (roles)? How is email routed to the smaller branch offices? Standard or Enterprise licenses? The business has been running Domino (messaging and application services) for over 10 years and also want Exchange to support email services, Blackberry, Outlook Web Access, possibly support for iPhone devices.   • Graphic Design in Outlook HTML Emails

    At the moment we are creating artwork in Word and saving it as an HTML file. Opening up a new email, clicking insert on menuclicking ‘File’Selecting HTML file and choosing insert as text. The word document is then embedded into the email and we can create HTML links from there. The problem with this method is we are limited to what we can create visually in Word. The artwork just does not look professional enough and we find that sometimes the headers or footers do not appear or do not stay in their correct position. What I would like to do is to be able to start in Adobe InDesign (the graphics package we use). So far I have been able to create artwork in InDesign and create buttons and hyperlinks in InDesignExport it as a pdf, maintaining the hyperlinksSave as HTML documentOpen new emailInsert HTML file choosing insert as text. The problem with this method is that the images move about, the text is all different sizes, but on the plus side, the hyperlinks have been retained. So I am almost there, but not quite. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get the design to display 'correctly' in Outlook.

  • What do you mean by the expressiveness in a programming language?

    I see a lot of the word 'expressiveness' when people want to stress one language is better than the other. But I don't see exactly what they mean by it. Is it the verboseness/succinctness? I mean, if one language can write down something shorter than the other, does that mean expressiveness? Paul Graham says that one language is more powerful than the other language in a sense that one language can do that the other language can't do (for example, LISP can do something with macro that the other language can't do). What do you think about the expressiveness of a programming language? Can you show the expressiveness using some code? What's the relationship with the expressiveness and DSL?     I would like to design a web app that functions as a simple thesaurus : a long list of words with attributes, all of which are linked to each other. Wikipedia defines it as: In Information Science, Library Science, and Information Technology, specialized thesauri are designed for information retrieval. They are a type of controlled vocabulary, for indexing or tagging purposes. Such a thesaurus can be used as the basis of an index for online material. The Art and Architecture Thesaurus, for example, is used to index the Canadian Information retrieval thesauri are formally organized so that existing relationships between concepts are made explicit. What database software, design or model would best fit this? Are PHP and MySQL good technologies to handle it?

Patterns are not a panacea. I once wrote a Tetris game with about 100 classes that incorporated all the patterns I knew at the time. Why use a simple if/else if you can use a pattern? OO is good, and patterns are even better, right? No, it was a terrible, over-engineered piece of crap. I am quite confused by these comments: I know design patterns help to make code reusable and readable, but when should I use use design patterns and perhaps more importantly, when should I avoid getting carried away with them?

What I noticed is that even though I think about the SW structure, design some diagrams, have they really clear in my mind when I start coding, at the end, my software is not flexible and clear as I would like to. I would like to ask you what kind of approaches, mechanisms or even tricks do you use, to get your software (and SW design) flexible, robust and clear (easy to understand and use). So....   • Django: How to set default language in admin on login

    I'm saving an user's default language in his user profile and on login I want to set the admin's default language to it. One possibility I was thinking of is using a middleware, but I think if I do it on process_request I will not see an user object there since this is processed AFTER the middleware, so I could only set it after the next request! Any solutions are highly appreciated!

  • Why is design by contract considered an alternative to the pseudo programming process?

    Right now I'm reading Code Complete by Steve McConnell and in chapter 9 he talks about the Pseudo Programming Process (PPP). From what I've understood, the PPP is a way of programming in which the programmer first writes the pseudo code for the routine he's working on, then refines it up to the point where pretty much each pseudo code line can be implemented in 1-3 lines of code, then writes the code in the designated programming language and finally the pseudo code is saved as comments for the purpose of documenting the routine. In chapter 9.4 the author mentions alternatives to the PPP, one of which is 'design by contract'. In design by contract you basically assert preconditions and postconditions of each routine. Now why would that be considered an alternative? To me it seems obvious that I should use both techniques at the same time and not chose one over the other.

  • What should be the minimal design/scope documentation before development begins?

    I am a junior developer working on my own in the programming aspect of projects. I am given a png file with 5-6 of the pages designed, most times in specific detail. From this I'm asked to develop the back end system needed to maintain the website, usually a cataloging system with products, tags and categories and match the front end to the design. I find myself in a pickle because when I make decisions based on assumptions about the flow of the website, due to a lack of outlining details, I get corrected and am required to rewrite the code to suit what was actually desired. This process happens multiple times throughout a project, often times on the same detail, until it's finally finished, with broken windows all through it. I understand that projects have scope creep, and can appreciate that I need to plan for this, but I feel that in this situation, I'm not receiving enough outlining details to effectively plan for the project, resulting in broken code and a stressed mind. What should be the minimal design/scope documentation I receive before I begin development?

  • Oracle Schema Design: Seperate Schema with I/O Overhead?

    We are designing database schema for a new system based on Oracle 11gR1. We have identified a main schema which would have close to 100 tables, these will be accessed from the front end Java application. We have a requirement to audit the values which got changed in close to 50 tables, this has to be done every row. Which means, it is possible that, for a single row in MYSYS.T1 there might be 50 (or more) rows in MYSYS_AUDIT.T1_AUD table. We might be having old values of every column entry and new values available from T1. DBA gave an observation, advising against this method, because he said, separate schema meant an extra I/O for every operation. Basically AUDIT schema would be used only to do some analyse and enter values (thus SELECT and INSERT). Is it true that, "a separate schema means an extra I/O" ? I could not find justification. It appears logical to me, as the AUDIT data should not be tampered with, so a separate schema. Also, we designed a separate schema for archiving some tables from MYSYS. From MYSYS_ARC the table might be backed up into tapes or deleted after sufficient time. Few stats: Few tables (close to 20, 30) in MYSYS schema could grow to around 50M rows. We have asked for a total disk space of 4 TB. MYSYS_AUDIT schema might be having 10 times that of MYSYS but we wont keep them more than 3 months. Questions Given all these, can you suggest me any improvements? Separate schema affects disc I/O? (one extra I/O for every schema ?) Any general suggestions?     Hi I have seen this often in code, but when I speak of it i don't know the name of such 'pattern' I have a method with 2 arguments that calls an overloaded method that has 3 arguments and intentionality sets the 3rd one to empty string. public DoWork(string name, string phoneNumber) { CreateContact(name, phoneNumber, string.Empty) } public DoWork(string name, string phoneNumber, string emailAddress) { //do the work } The reason I'm doing this is I to not duplicate code, and allow the existing callers to still call the method that has only 2 parameters. I have associate a few tags to this question, but it probably fit in more categories of questions. Is this a pattern, and does it have a name?
