  • Efficient way to create a large number of SharePoint folders

    Hi all: I'm currently creating a large number of SharePoint folders within a list (e.g. ~800 folders), with each folder containing a different number of items. The way it is currently done is that it programmatically reads off the content types, items, event listeners and the likes off the same folder from another web, then creates the same folder in the current web. That ran reasonably fine and fast on a dev environment. However when it goes to an environment with WFEs and farms, it slowed down a lot. I have checked that there are no leaks in the code, and that the code follows SharePoint coding best practices. At the moment I'm looking at it at the code level. From your experience, are there any efficient ways of creating a large number of SharePoint folders, lists and items? EDIT: I'm currently using SharePoint API, but will be looking at moving to using Web Service in the future. I'm interested in looking at both options though. Code wise, its just the general reading of a folder and its content types plus items and their details, then create the same folder in the same list with the same content types, then copy over the items using patch update. I want to know whether there are more efficient ways of doing the above. Thanks.

The method signature could be /** Split a list into two sublists. The original list will be modified to * have size i and will contain exactly the same elements at indices 0 * through i-1 as it had originally; the returned list will have size * len-i (where len is the size of the original list before the call) * and will have the same elements at indices 0 through len-(i+1) as * the original list had at indices i through len-1. */ <T> List<T> split(List<T> list, int i); [EDIT] List.subList returns a view on the original list, which becomes invalid if the original is modified. So split can't use subList unless it also dispenses with the original reference (or, as in Marc Novakowski's answer, uses subList but immediately copies the result).

    Is it possible to send an email alert when a field of a list is empty ? I've tried the following : Create a custom list, add a field named "TestField" Create a personal view named "TestView", filter : Show when column "TestField" is equal to "" (leave the box empty) Create an alert, immediate email when items appearing in "TestView" are modified Create an item with both fields filled Create an item with only title filled Now you should receive two alert emails, but in the view "TestView" there is only one item. Is it a bug ?

    I have created a SQL Server Reporting Services Report Builder 3 report that contains a list of several items from a SharePoint list. I would like the list on the report to be a numbered list, so that when exported to Word, if a user adds another item to the document, the numbering is updated automatically. I can simulate a numbered list by creating a table and using 'RowNumber' in one of the columns, however this does not get rendered as a true numbered list. Is there any way to create a true numbered list in Report Builder 3

    Moving a document using a SharePoint Designer workflow involves copying the document to the SharePoint document library you want to move the document to, and then deleting the document from the current document library it is in. You can use the Copy List Item action to copy the document and the Delete item action to delete the document. To create a SharePoint Designer workflow that can move a document from one document library to another: 1. In SharePoint Designer 2007, open the SharePoint site on which the document library that contains the documents to move is located. 2. On the Define your new workflow screen of the Workflow Designer, enter a name for the workflow, select the document library you want to attach the workflow to (this would be a document library containing documents to move), select Allow this workflow to be manually started from an item, and click Next. 3. On the Step 1 screen of the Workflow Designer, click Actions, and then click More Actions from the drop-down menu. 4. On the Workflow Actions dialog box, select List Actions from the category drop-down list box, select Copy List Item from the actions list, and click Add. The following text is added to the Workflow Designer: Copy item in this list to this list 5. On the Step 1 screen of the Workflow Designer, click the first this list (representing the document library to copy the document from) in the text of the Copy List Item action. 6. On the Choose List Item dialog box, leave Current Item selected, and click OK. 7.   • Bigger ProjectServer farm is performing worse

    I am using Project Server 2007 sp3 with SharePoint 2007 sp3 and SQL Server 2008 r2. I have recently moved my farm from 2 servers (1 DB and 1 App/Web) to a very big farm having Many Servers, Clustered Database, Load Balancer, Powerful processors and Large RAM. This Farm has more than one Web Servers, Project App Servers, SharePoint App Servers and a separate Index Server. But the performance of Project Server in the new Farm has been downgraded. Views are taking even more time to load data and Project publishing time has also been increased. I am also facing deadlock problems which are causing the project server queue jobs to fail. Could anyone inform me that what would be the reason of this problem and what should be the starting point to look into the issue? Is it mainly because now the application server needs to communicate with other application servers which were not needed in the previous farm? Thanks!

  • Data Structure Behind Amazon S3s Keys (Filtering Data Structure)

    I'd like to implement a data structure similar to the lookup functionality of Amazon S3. For those of you who don't know what I'm taking about, Amazon S3 stores all files at the root, but allows you to look up groups of files by common prefixes in their names, therefore replicating the power of a directory tree without the complexity of it. The catch is, both lookup and filter operations are O(1) (or close enough that even on very large buckets - S3's disk equivalents - both operations might as well be O(1))). So in short, I'm looking for a data structure that functions like a hash map, with the added benefit of efficient (at the very least not O(n)) filtering. The best I can come up with is extending HashMap so that it also contains a (sorted) list of contents, and doing a binary search for the range that matches the prefix, and returning that set. This seems slow to me, but I can't think of any other way to do it. Does anyone know either how Amazon does it, or a better way to implement this data structure?

I would like some suggestions on what would be the best data structure for representing, on disk, a large data set of time series data. The main priority is speed of insertion, with other priorities in decreasing order; speed of retrieval, size on disk, size in memory, speed of removal. I have seen that B+ trees are often used in database because of their fast search times, but how about for fast insertion times? Is a linked list really the way to go?     Hi, I'm uploading a large amount of data from a CSV (I'm doing it via MySQL Workbench): LOAD DATA INFILE 'C:/development/mydoc.csv' INTO TABLE mydatabase.mytable CHARACTER SET utf8 FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' LINES TERMINATED BY '\r'; However, I'm noticing that it keeps adding an empty line full of nulls/zeros after the last record. I'm guessing it's because of the "LINES TERMINATED" command. However, I need that to load the data in correctly. Is there some way around this / some better SQL to avoid the blank row in the table?     I am new at Core Data, and it seems like it is a great way to manage the data store. However I am also very memory-conscious due to the fact that the iPhone doesn't have that much of it. I was a little surprised to see that the data types are so limited - eg. there is a Date type which includes also the time, but no Date type for just the date! All the time information takes up precious bytes of memory, if I just wanted an attribute with the date (e.g. 2/15/2010 rather than 2/15/2010 02:34:48), how could I do this? Is it possible?

I wish to transfer the few lists and their view from the old WSS3 to SP2010. How should I do this? The problem is whenever we attempt to work with columns in a list (add or update) we get the following error: Culture ID 1164 (0x048C) is not a supported culture.
