  • anonymous access to ftpd

    I need FTP on my local LAN so my scanner can send me scans. I am on Debian sid. I installed ftpd and created the user anonymous. I removed anonymous from /etc/ftpusers When I try to login as anonymous it says: login failed. I can't seem to find any log file. I'm using FTP server (Version 6.4/OpenBSD/Linux-ftpd-0.17) update:I needed that so my printer had one place to store my scanned documents on the LAN. solved that buying a dedicated USB pen drive (thankfully I bought a printer one with plenty of options) but in the past this was a very simple task. Install ftpd, specify the directory for anonymous access, and be done with it. now every ftp daemon has several layers of security and chroot in it's core... this is just crazy when all you need a place for a printer to dump files in a secured network.

  • Word 2007 has highjacked my RTF association to Jarte Pro

    64-bit Vista I have both Word 2007 and Jarte Pro. I have used Default Programs Set Associations in Vista to associate RTF with Jarte Pro. However, when clicking on an RTF file in Explorer, it opens in Word 2007. Is there any way to correct this, other than to uninstall Word? :) =============================================================================== After much back and forth with Jarte's developer, he determined that: "The error you are encountering appears to be due to a problem Jarte is having communicating with your printer. However, I don't know why this would only be happening when you start Jarte by clicking on a file. I will have to investigate this further. Meanwhile, try downloading and installing the latest printer driver for your printer and see if that helps." I did have the latest driver. He will correct the problem with the next version of Jarte (a terrific program, BTW).

  • How to select the page range to print in Windows 8 Modern UI apps?

    Today I wanted to print an email from the Mail app (modern UI). I selected devices from the charms bar, and I chose my printer. The problem is that it was a very long email (a 40 replies unthreaded email), and I only needed the first page. It looks like there is no way to select a page range in the simple printing dialog, am I right? I solved the problem by inserting just one page in the printer and then deleting the job, but this is not a real fix... (I could print to a PDF printer, then open in Acrobat and print again, but...)

    I am running Windows Server 2008 (not R2) for a print server and I have a program that needs to write to the UNC path of the network printer. I have found that anyone in the Print Operators group is able to write to the UNC path of the network printer, but standard users are not. I have tried adding the same permissions as the Print Operators group to a user, but when I try to write to the UNC path, I get Access Denied. I cannot add users to the Print Operators group because it gives too many permissions. What permissions do I need to set to allow standard users to print to the UNC path of a network printer?

    I've been attempting to set up my new brother multi-function device to work as a printer and scanner using the following steps. It is connected to the network as a LAN device, not directly connected to my ubuntu machine. Downloaded the lpr driver and cupswrapper driver from Brother support. (Select the deb packages, not the rpms). Followed the instructions to install the lpr driver. Followed the instructions to install the cupswrapper driver. After this point I was able to successfully perform a test print, so the printer part is working. So far I haven't had much luck getting the scanner working. This is what I've tried: Downloaded the brscan4 and scan-key-tool deb packages from brother support. Followed the instructions for installing the scanner driver for network. Followed the instructions for installing scan-key-tool. However when I tried to scan it detects no scanner. I then tried the solution offered in this answer to a question based on a similar brother printer, but no luck. I must have made a mistake somewhere along the line. Does anyone have any ideas what I can try to find out what? Or should I uninstall everything and start again from the beginning?

  • How should I group these variables?

    I have a shape that will be defined by: char s_type; char color; double height; double width; These variables are scanned in from a request string sent to my server and passed into my printing function, which then prints out the shape. Currently they are just local variables sitting in my main(); however, I was wondering if there would be any advantage in creating a struct containing these variables, and then passing the struct to my printing function? or how else might I improve my program's structure/style, would passing a struct by reference have any kind of performance benefit if there were many requests and therefore many printing function calls? printer(char st, char cr, double ht, double wd); int main() { // Other main functionality. char s_type; char color; double height; double width; sscanf (serv_req, "GET /%c/%c/%lf/%lf", &s_type, &color, &height, &width); printer(s_type, color, height, width); // Other main functionality. return 0; } It seemed "neater" if I had a struct or something that didn't leave me with declarations in the middle of everything else going on in main.   • Windows 2008 R2 SMB / CIFS Logging to diagnose Brother MFC Network Scanning

    I am attempting to setup network scanning on a brother MFC-9970CDW printer. According to the Brother documentation, the printer is setup to connect to any CIFS network share. I applied all of the appropriate setting in the printer however I get a "sending error" when I try to scan a document. When I look at the logs of the 2008 R2 server that I am attempting to connect to; I can see in the security log where the printer successfully authenticates, however nothing else is logged. I would assume that immediately after the authentication, the printer is making a CIFS request and some sort of error is occurring, however I can't seem to find any way to log this information to find out what is going on. Is it possible to get Windows 2008 to log SMB/CIFS traffic?   • Silverlight 4, Out of browser, Printing, Automatic updates

    I have a very critial business application presently running using Winforms. The application is a very core UI shell. It accepts input data, calls a webservice on my server to do the computation, displays the results on the winforms app and finally send a print stream to the printer. Presently the application is deployed using Click-once. Moving forward, I am trying to contemplate wheather I should move the application into a Silverlight application. Couple of reasons I am thinking silverlight. Gives clients the feel that it is a cloud based solution. Can be accessed from any PC. While the clickonce app is able to do this as well, they have to install an app, and when updates are available they have to click "Yes" to update. The application presently has a drop down list of customers, this list has expanded to over 3000 records. Scrolling through the list is very painful. With Silverlight I am thinking of the auto complete ability. Out of the browser - this will be handy for those users who use the app daily. I haven't used Silverlight previous hence looking for some expert advice on a few things: Printing - does silverlight allow sending raw print data to the printer. The application prints to a Zebra Thermal label printer. I have to send raw bytes to the printer with the commands. Can this be done with SL, or will it always prompt the "Print" dialog? Out of browser - when SL apps are installed as out of browser, how to updates come through, does the app update automatically or is the user prompted to opt for update?

  • Network Printers

    We have a sever that shares all the printers. The PC's that are running on XP professional get a error message quoting (Connect to Printer). The only way I can find to get around the problem is by restating the printer and as soon is it comes online you can then add it but you have not got long. do you think it could be anything to-do with updates on the sever? the sever system is running Windows Server 2003 any help would be much appreciated.     I am running flash-player plug-in 10.0.32.10 inside of Firefox on a SLED 11 machine. Firefox can print to the network printer without issue from File Print. However, I cannot get the flash-player plugin to print at all. The print dialog comes up, asks for which printer, and which pages. I click Print and it was as if I had pressed cancel. Is this a known issue?

  • Best way to export powerpoint slides into pngs with different resoltuions?

    I am trying to convert powerpoint slides into a png. I know that there are several ways that allow to do this by allowing for changing the resolution (e.g., within powerpoint by changing the registry, or using pdf printers as proposed here and here). However, always changing the registry is cumbersome and using the pdf printer (bullzip printer and pdfforge) is not working as expected. Does anyone know of easy, free and reliable way to export powerpoint (2010) slides into png pictures while allowing to easily change the resoltuion?

For instance, from reading a couple technet articles I've learned that I can run the following: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=”File and Printer Sharing” new enable=Yes The bit about 'group="File and Printer Sharing"' is the part I'm having trouble finding documentation for. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And, if possible, I'd rather a pointer to the docs than a simple listing of group names.

    I'm reading around and it seems that 32 bit drivers do not work under 64 bit windows. Is this true? since 32-bit applications can run under 64 bit windows it seems ridiculous that 32-bit printer drivers cannot. Are printer drivers run at the kernel level? Sounds like we're in for driver hell for our RDP environments.

    I'm thinking of getting a budget color laserjet. Will I need to buy four toner cartridges at the same time I get the printer, or do they come with starter toner cartridges? If there is toner with it, any idea how many pages I can get on what's in the box? The Samsung CL-315 or the HP Color LaserJet CP1215, both under $200, are good examples of the class of printer I'm looking at. Thanks!

  • FileSystemWatcher.WaitForChanged returns, but there is still a lock on the file

    I have a program that send a document to a pdf printer driver and that driver prints to a particular directory. After the print I want to attach the pdf to an e-mail (MailMessage) and send it off. Right now, I send the document to the printer (wich spawns a new process) and then call a FileSystemWatcher.WaitForChanged(WaitForChangedResult.Created) but when the object is created, it's still not done "printing" and the pdf printer still has a lock on it, throwing an error when I try to attach that file to an e-mail. I've considered a plain Thread.Sleep(2000) or whatever, but that's far less than ideal. I considered putting the attachment code in a try/catch block and looping on failure, but again, that's just bad news. I can't really think of an elegant solution.

    When I go to Printers and Faxes dialog, I can click the Add a printer link, select Network Printer, then Find a printer in the directory. From there I get a dialog box which lets me find ALL printers in the enterprise. I need to find all the network printers with my code. How can I do this? Note that I am not talking about network printers that are connected to my PC, but all network printers in the enterprise (my workplace has almost 4000 printers). P.S.
