  • Can't install kernel-uek-headers for currently running kernel

    - by haydenc2
    I have just created a VM in VMWare and installed a minimal install of Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.3. # cat /etc/oracle-release Oracle Linux Server release 6.3 It is running with the UEK kernel. # uname -r 2.6.39-200.24.1.el6uek.x86_64 When I try and install VMWare Tools, I get the following error. Searching for a valid kernel header path... The path "" is not a valid path to the 2.6.39-200.24.1.el6uek.x86_64 kernel headers. Would you like to change it? [yes] I have version 2.6.39 of the UEK installed, but the kernel-uek-headers are only 2.6.32. # yum list kernel-uek Installed Packages kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-200.24.1.el6uek @anaconda-UEK2/6.3 kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-200.29.3.el6uek @ol6_UEK_latest # yum list kernel-uek-headers Installed Packages kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.32.2.el6uek @ol6_latest And it appears that the headers for 2.6.39 aren't there. # yum list kernel-uek-headers --showduplicates Installed Packages kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.32.2.el6uek @ol6_latest Available Packages kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-100.28.5.el6 ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-100.28.9.el6 ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-100.28.11.el6 ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-100.28.15.el6 ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-100.28.17.el6 ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-100.34.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-100.35.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-100.36.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-100.37.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-200.16.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-200.19.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-200.20.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-200.23.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.3.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.4.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.7.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.11.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.20.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.21.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.24.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.25.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.27.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.29.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.29.2.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.32.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek-headers.x86_64 2.6.32-300.32.2.el6uek ol6_latest The kernel for 2.6.32 is there. # yum list kernel-uek --showduplicates Installed Packages kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-200.24.1.el6uek @anaconda-UEK2/6.3 kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-200.29.3.el6uek @ol6_UEK_latest Available Packages kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-100.28.5.el6 ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-100.28.9.el6 ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-100.28.11.el6 ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-100.28.15.el6 ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-100.28.17.el6 ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-100.34.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-100.35.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-100.36.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-100.37.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-200.16.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-200.19.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-200.20.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-200.23.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.3.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.4.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.7.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.11.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.20.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.21.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.24.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.25.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.27.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.29.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.29.2.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.32.1.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.32-300.32.2.el6uek ol6_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-100.5.1.el6uek ol6_UEK_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-100.6.1.el6uek ol6_UEK_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-100.7.1.el6uek ol6_UEK_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-100.10.1.el6uek ol6_UEK_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-200.24.1.el6uek ol6_UEK_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-200.29.1.el6uek ol6_UEK_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-200.29.2.el6uek ol6_UEK_latest kernel-uek.x86_64 2.6.39-200.29.3.el6uek ol6_UEK_latest Should I downgrade the kernel to 2.6.32 so I can install VMWare tools? • Error: "failed to connect to wpa_supplicant - wpa_ctrl_open no such file or directory" using netcfg with wpa_supplicant

    - by user1576628
I'm trying to set up netcfg so that I can finish installing Arch Linux (using the instructions from the Beginners' Guide and netcfg) and I passed over what was meant to be a short step. Open wifi-menu, select network, enter password. After multiple attempts, I decided to edit the profile manually, which yielded no improvement. Eventually I decided to use netfcg with the more familiar wpa_supplicant. My /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file is as follows: network={ ssid="my_ssid" #psk="my_wireless_passcode" psk="my_wireless_passcode_hex" } (Replacing generic names with my actual ssid and psk.) And my /etc/network.d/wpa_suppl file reads: CONNECTION='wireless' DESCRIPTION='A wpa_supplicant configuration based wireless connection' INTERFACE='wlan0' SECURITY='wpa-config' WPA_CONF='/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf' IP='dhcp' My ssid is not hidden, wlan0 is the proper interface, and wpa_supplicant works fine on its own, but using netcfg wpa_suppl, it returns failed to connect to wpa_supplicant - wpa_ctrl_open no such file or directory about twelve times before finally telling me the authentication failed. What can I do to fix this?

  • LightDM will not start after stopping it

    - by Sweeters
I am running Ubuntu 11.10 "Oneiric Ocelot", and in trying to install the nvidia CUDA developer drivers I switched to a virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F5) and stopped lightdm (installation required that no X server instance be running) through sudo service lightdm stop. Re-starting lightdm with sudo service lightdm start did not work: A couple of * Starting [...] lines where displayed, but the process hanged. (I do not remember at which point, but I think it was * Starting System V runlevel compatibility. I manually rebooted my laptop, and ever since booting seems to hang, usually around the * Starting anac(h)ronistic cron [OK] log line (not consistently at that point, though). From that point on, I seem to be able to interact with my system only through a tty session (Ctrl-Alt-F1). I've tried purging and reinstalling both lightdm and gdm, as well as selecting both as the default display managers (through sudo dpkg-reconfigure [lightdm / gdm] or by manually editing /etc/X11/default-display-manager) through both apt-get and aptitude (that shouldn't make a difference anyway) after updating the packages, but the problem persists. Some of the responses I'm getting are the following: After running sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm (but not ... gdm) I get the following message: dpkg-maintscript-helper:warning: environment variable DPKG_MATINSCRIPT_NAME missing dpkg-maintscript-helper:warning: environment variable DPKG_MATINSCRIPT_PACKAGE missing After trying sudo service lightdm start or sudo start lightdm I get to see the boot loading screen again but nothing changes. If I go back to the tty shell I see lightdm start/running, process <num> but ps -e | grep lightdm gives no output. After trying sudo service gdm start or sudo starg gdm I get the gdm start/running, process <num> message, and gdm-binary is supposedly an active process, but all that happens is that the screen blinks a couple of times and nothing else. Other candidate solutions that I'd found on the web included running startx but when I try that I get an error output [...] Fatal server error: no screens found [...]. Moreover, I made sure that lightdm-gtk-greeter is installed but that did not help either. Please excuse my not including complete outputs/logs; I am writing this post from another computer and it's hard to manually copy the complete logs. Also, I've seen several posts that had to do with similar problems, but either there was no fix, or the one suggested did not work for me. In closing: Please help! I very much hope to avoid re-installing Ubuntu from scratch! :) Alex @mosi I did not manage to fix the NVIDIA kernel driver as per your instructions. I should perhaps mention that I'm on a Dell XPS15 laptop with an NVIDIA Optimus graphics card, and that I have bumblebee installed (which installs nvidia drivers during its installation, I believe). Issuing the mentioned commands I get the following: ~$uname -r 3.0.0-12-generic ~$lsmod | grep -i nvidia nvidia 11713772 0 ~$dmesg | grep -i nvidia [ 8.980041] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel. • Running a small IPTV station

    - by nixterrimus
I'm looking to run an iptv station for my dorm. I know I can serve multicast so that's not a problem. The station will serve out podcasts and other cc licensed content. The target endpoint is xbmc- a media center. So far I know that I need to serve an rtp stream over udp that's streaming an mpeg-4 avc main or high profile with aac ( or ac3 ?) audio. I've had some luck using vlc with vlm to stream but it seems limited. What are my other options?  Everything has to run on Linux- hopefully open source. How can I use playlists and not live streams? What are my software options?

  • Repair GRUB bootloader for multiboot system

    - by user1715324
I have two hard disks – one a 1TB and the other a 250 GB. I installed the OSes in the following order: Windows 7 on the first hard disk (1 TB) After that Kubuntu 12.04 on a partition (/dev/sdb7) on the second hard disk (250 GB) The second drive also contains an NTFS partition. Now, kubuntu's bootloader was installed on the second hard drive's MBR (and successfully detected Windows 7). So, whenever I wanted to load Windows I used to select the first hard disk from the BIOS boot menu and the second hard disk whenever I wanted to load kubuntu. I know I could have set the second hard disk as the default drive, still I prefered this method. The problem started when I installed Linux Mint 13 on the second hard disk (/dev/sdb3) and overwrote kubuntu's original MBR. Now, the GRUB just detects Mint and Windows. The MBR on the 1 TB hard disk is untouched. Is there a way I can modify the MBR on the second hard disk now so that it will show kubuntu and Mint both?

  • How do I disable other monitors while running games in Wine?

    - by Michael Cheng
My current setup is: * Dual GTS 250 video cards * 3 Monitors * Used nvidia-settings to run each monitor as a separate x session * This is all running on Linux Mint Debian Edition When running games (Starcraft II) in Wine via PlayOnLinux, I've found that the mouse does not get locked. I already tried various solutions littered across the web and none work so I'd rather just disable my other two monitors while playing. Does anyone know of a method where I can turn off my other two monitors (not my primary monitor) while running Wine and then turn then back on afterwards? I don't mind having to manually run a script before and after gaming. Thanks.

  • Ping isn't acting accurate?

    - by Earlz
I've been trying to diagnose some latency issues with my internet connection. I've been lagging out of online video games and such, which of course could be their server's fault. So, I've been running ping some. It doesn't indicate anything unusual, but it does act a bit strange. I can start it with something like ping internethost -i 0.1 so that it will send a ton of packets, and every 10-20 seconds it will appear to just freeze for 2 or 3 seconds. The packets are still being received in the right order though, and there is no packet loss. The weirdest thing is that after the little freeze up, it will usually just report a ping time that is about 10-30ms higher than the average. How does this happen? Is ping still being accurate? I'm using Arch Linux. The host I'm pinging is my website, which shouldn't be doing any kind of ping slowing or filtering.

  • Socks5 proxy "Dante" leaves many child processes stuck in FIN_WAIT2 / CLOSE_WAIT state

    - by Asad R.
I'm running dante v1.2.1 as a SOCKS proxy server. The proxy works fine but at the end of the day there are around 40-50 or more child processes of sockd running even though there are no active connections. lsof shows that the child processes all have sockets in the CLOSE_WAIT and FIN_WAIT2 state. These child processes stay in this state unless I manually killall/restart the daemon. I'm running Gentoo Linux on a 2.6.24-23-xen kernel. I recently upgraded from dante v1.1.19-r4 which was giving me the exact same problem. Is this a configuration issue with Dante, my system, or is it a coding issue in the dante code?

  • Input not supported message when monitor is powered off then back on

    - by Jason Down
I've been getting a message on my monitor where "Input not supported" is floating around. This only happens when I manually turn the monitor off and then later turn it back on. Leaving the monitor on and allowing it to go to the screen saver doesn't seem to cause the issue (but I prefer to turn the monitor off if I'm going to be away from the computer for any length of time). • Oracle Keeps Growing Partner Certifications with Addition of McAfee

    - by Ted Davis
Viruses stink. Whether it’s the common cold virus, Goatpox virus – yes it exists -- or a computer virus, you name it, viruses stink. When it comes to our computer server infrastructure we all want to make sure our servers are secure from any malware out there. Additionally, installation of anti-virus software is a requirement by many governments and for many enterprises both large and small. Because of the growth of Oracle Linux in their customer base, McAfee recently certified their “McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for Linux” on Oracle Linux.  It delivers always-on, real-time anti-virus protection for Linux environments. Its unique, Linux-based on-access scanner constantly monitors the system for potential attacks. While there have been few viruses found on Linux, you can now feel secure running Oracle Linux in your infrastructure with McAfee on top. We are happy to introduce McAfee into the Oracle Linux family of certified applications.

  • buggy mouse click after a while

    - by sputnick
The cursor of my mouse is moving as well on my twin view, but after a WHILE, or if I start kde with runlevels (I don't know why, but startx works better) I can't click anything. I have had replaced the mouse with another one, but it's the same problem, so it's not a hardware problem. The problem occurs both with gnome and kde. My config : PC Dell Optiplex 780 archlinux x86_64 (up to date) xf86-input-evdev 2.6.0-4 xorg-server 1.11.2-2 kernel linux-3.1.1-1-ARCH My Xorg log doesn't contains "EE" string for errors. Any clue ?

  • Why is systemd not setting my system time?

    - by Alex Chamberlain
I'm running Arch Linux. Recently, when I turn on my PC, the system time is set to 1:00 1 January 1970 - presumably the 1:00 o'clock is from the timezone shift. Does anyone have any ideas why systemd isn't setting my system time correctly? Some useful output (I think)... • Gnuplot with octave produces only entirely black bar diagrams

    - by Lambda Dusk
My problem is the following: On my system (Linux Mint 14), the normal octave and gnuplot packages only produce completely black bar diagrams: I have tried to change the colours in any way I could imagine, but no avail: bar(xbin, yy, 'barwidth', 1, 'facecolor', 'r', 'edgecolor', 'b'); xlabel('x_i'); ylabel('p_i'); print -deps bars.eps However, when I plot the graph with the command graphics_toolkit fltk; It looks fine - but fltk doesn't either understand umlauts or LaTeX-style formula notation like p_i (necessary for captions and labels). Maybe I haven't configured something correctly. I just installed octave from the repos and thought it would work. Anyone can help?

  • HTG Explains: Which Linux File System Should You Choose?

    - by Justin Garrison
File systems are one of the layers beneath your operating system that you don’t think about—unless you’re faced with the plethora of options in Linux. Here’s how to make an educated decision on which file system to use. The landscape of the Linux file system support is drastically different from Windows and OS X. In Windows and OS X you can find software that will add support for non-standard file systems, but both operating systems can only be installed on their native file system and third party support is added after the fact. Linux on the other hand has a vast array of supported file systems built into the kernel. But how are you supposed to know which file system to pick when installing? We will take a look at some of the most popular choices available and give you use cases to consider—the choice is ultimately up to you based on your needs. • How can I see logs in a server after a kernel panic hang?

    - by Low Kian Seong
I am running a production gentoo Linux machine, and recently there was a situation where the server hung in my co-located premises and when I got there I noticed that the server was hung on what appeared to be a kernel panic hang. I rebooted the machine with a hard reboot and was disappointed to find out that I could not find a shred of evidence anywhere on why the machine hung. Is it true that when I do a hard reboot the messages itself will get lost or is there a setting I can do somewhere say in syslog-ng or maybe in sysctl to at least preserve the error log so that I can prevent such mishaps from happening in the future ? I am running a 2.6.x kernel by the way. Thanks in advance.

  • Is there anything that can be done to make X forwarding over LAN less painful?

    - by Earlz
I have two *nix machines that I like to remotely do graphical things sometimes with. One of those machines is my Arch Linux media server, and another is my OpenBSD router/general server. My current task was installing a Windows XP over virtual box on my media server. I preferred to do the installation from my main workstation so that I could continue to watch TV from my media server on it's "actual" display. I soon noticed that X forwarding is quite painful though, even over low-latency LAN connections. Are there any settings I can tweak to make it a bit less painfully slow, jittery, and laggy? My LAN is rather small, 100Mbit, and ping times to the other box average at about 0.15ms. Also, I know Virtualbox has a VNC mode it can use instead of doing X forwarding, but this particular task was just an example

  • Development environment for embedded system

    - by Howard Lee Harkness
I need to develop software in C/C++ for an embedded system. I have Debian 6 running off of a USB hard drive. I would like to be able to generate a stripped-down kernel with modules, and install them either on a CF card or a USB 'thumb' drive. I succeeded in building a Linux 3.6 kernel and running it in Debian off of the USB hard drive, but I am having trouble figuring out how to install it on the thumb drive. I would like a build cycle that looks like this: 1) Build module or kernel with desired software 2) Install it on thumb drive 3) Boot and test I would like to use the same system for both development and testing, if that is feasible. I am looking for resources and tutorials that would help me understand how to do this.

  • Why does VNC eat certain characters?

    - by TK Kocheran
I often use VNC to connect to my desktop upstairs using a laptop downstairs over my home network. I tunnel the VNC connection via SSH. The problem I keep running into is that I'll attempt to type a ! or a : or even a captial A and it will come across the wire as a 1, ;, or a respectively. Is this something I can fix? It's really REALLY annoying while one is programming to have to pop open character map and find a colon and copy/paste it in each time. Running Ubuntu 10.04 upstairs, Linux Mint 10 downstairs.

  • client subscribed to a multicast group not receiving data

    - by Abruzzo Forte e Gentile
I have a network that was setup for multicast traffic IN Machine A there is a server application generating multi-cast traffic. I have also different clients subscribing to that mulicast traffic -some client are in the same machine A -other clients are in machine B,C,D # Address I am using IP : 239.193.0.21 PORT: 20401 I don't know why but the client in machine A , even if they join the group, don't receive any data while (and this is the funny part) machine B,C and D receive everything. Checking with Wirshark I can see that the UDP traffic flow is there in Machine A. I am using LInux/Red-Hat Enterprise 6.2 What should I look at? Any setting in the os? Firewall or what?

  • Is it worth moving from Microsoft tech to Linux, NodeJS & other open source frameworks to save money for a start-up?

    - by dormisher
I am currently getting involved in a startup, I am the only developer involved at the moment, and the other guys are leaving all the tech decisions up to me at the moment. For my day job I work at a software house that uses Microsoft tech on a day to day basis, we utilise .NET, SqlServer, Windows Server etc. However, I realise that as a startup we need to keep costs down, and after having a brief look at the cost of hosting for Windows I was shocked to see some of the prices for a dedicated server. The cheapest I found was £100 a month. Also if the business needs to scale in the future and we end up needing multiple servers, we could end up shelling out £10's of £000's a year in SQL Server / Windows Server licenses etc. I then had a quick look at the price of Linux hosting for a dedicated server and saw the price was waaaaaay lower than windows hosting. One place was offering a machine with 2 cores for less than £20 a month. This got me thinking maybe the way to go is open source on Linux. As I write a lot of Javascript at work (I'm working on a single page backbone app at the moment), I thought maybe NodeJS and a web framework like Express would be cool to use. I then thought that instead of using SQL why not use an open source NoSQL database like MongoDB, which has great support on NodeJS? My only concern is that some of the work the application is going to do is going to be dynamically building images and various other image related stuff, i.e. stuff that is quite CPU heavy - so I'm thinking of maybe writing anything CPU heavy in C++ and consuming it as a module in Node. That's the background - but basically is Linux a good match for: Hosting a NodeJS/Express site? Compiling C++ node modules? Using a NoSQL DB like MongoDB? And is it a good idea to move to these unfamiliar technologies to save money?

  • What is the best way to back up dedicated web server? (Amanda versus Rsync)

    - by Scott
Hello everyone, I am trying to establish valid back ups for my web server. It is a linux box on CentOS. I have asked around and "rsync" was suggested by some of the server fault community. However, my coworker at work says that this is really only moving over the physical files and isn't really a usable "snapshot." He suggested using "amanda" and that this did full server snapshots that are more what I am accustomed to. I know at my company we have virtual machines that we take snapshots of and we can restore everything back to just as they were with little effort and little downtime. Is this possible with rsync? Or would I need to create a new server and then migrate the files back and do various configurations? I think I prefer being able to just reset everything to a point in time. Forgive my ignorance, Back ups are something that I have never really had to worry about before.

  • apt - Remove not configured package

    - by madflow
I have a Linux-Mint Debian Edition System. When I install sendmail I get an infinite loop. Reading configuration from /etc/mail/sendmail.conf. Validating configuration. Creating /etc/mail/databases... Reading configuration from /etc/mail/sendmail.conf. Validating configuration. Creating /etc/mail/databases... When I try dpkg --configure -a it is the same. Now I want to simple remove sendmail from the installation queue - but I can't simply do that, because apt-get always wants to configure sendmail first. Is there a way to force apt-get to remove sendmail or set it to "configured" - even though the package is not properly configured?
