• How can I configure Samba to share (read/write) any folder with root permissions?

  I have a CentOS 5 VirtualBox guest on a Win7x64 host. I am attempting to setup a read/write share a directory owned by root with my Windows host using Samba, but I'm having no luck after running around in circles. To simplify matters, I've disabled my Firewall (/etc/init.d/iptables stop). As security and permissions are irrelevant for this purpose, I'd rather not have to set up another unix user/group/password. Here is the output from testparm Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf rlimit_max: rlimit_max (1024) below minimum Windows limit (16384) Processing section "[Guest Share]" Loaded services file OK. However, on my Windows host, I can only see the share folder on the guest \\IPv4, but I cannot go into "Guest Share": "The network name cannot be found" error message is a common error, with a likely cause: The user you are trying to access the share with does not have sufficient permissions to access the path for the share. Both read (r) and access (x) should be possible. Am I trying to use root as a passwordless Samba guest? I'd like to, is it possible? How can I configure Samba to share (read/write) any folder with root permissions?

  One fast question: if I buy an iPad 3G in Europe will it work on other places without jailbreak? I ask this because I heard that, in Europe, iPads are not blocked to any telecom but I am not sure about that. On the other hand I am afraid do buy because I know that their cousins, iphones, are blocked to a specific telecom. Another question is regarding activation. As far as I remembered, my iPhone required me to do an activation step on iTunes and I remember it was also activated (or whatever) on the store (I remembered the salesman connected it to a computer and did some stuff before giving me the device). Is the iPad in europe totally free of operator? totally unblocked? thanks.

• PC does not recognize XBox 360 controller connected through Play & Charge Kit

  I wanted to hook up my wireless XBox 360 controller to my PC running windows 7. I'm trying to use the Play & Charge kit since I already had that laying around. I plugged it in and Windows recognize it and installed it. It registers in Device Manager as "Xbox 360 Wireless Controller via Play & Charge Kit". The controller also has the 1st quadrant lit. However, I can't seem to make this work with any games. I installed the "Microsoft Xbox 360 Accessories" kit from MS website, and I run the Accessories Status app and it doesn't recognize that the controller is connected. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong out there?

• Some Memory Slots Not Working on MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 Motherboard

  Short version of question: Does anyone have an MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 motherboard, who can confirm that all four memory slots work? Long version: Several months ago I bought an MSI FM2-A85XA-G65 motherboard at Newegg. At that point I installed an AMD A8-5500 processor and two sticks of Corsair Vengeance 8 GB DDR3-1866 memory, and put it into my file server. I installed the RAM in slots 1 and 3, as directed in the manual, to enable dual-channel memory access. It seemed to work fine, so I bought a second identical mobo (which arrived dead, but was quickly replaced by Newegg) and set of RAM, installed an A10-5800K, and put that into my production Linux machine. Again, it seemed to work well. Eventually I happened to notice that on the server only 8 GB of RAM appeared in the BIOS. I tried each of the slots and memory modules individually and in various combinations. I even swapped processors with the production machine. The result was that putting memory in slots 1 and 2 worked (showing a total of 16 GB), but any memory in slots 3 or 4 was not recognized. However, all four memory slots in the production machine worked, and I confirmed this with both processors. I contacted MSI and arranged to ship the defective mobo back to them for replacement under warranty. I did not want my file server to be down in the interim, and I had another machine I wanted to upgrade, so I bought a third identical mobo to use. That one had the same problem -- only memory slots 1 and 2 worked. I tested it thoroughly with multiple processors and memory sticks. I sent the defective mobo back to MSI and they sent me a new one. This has the same memory slot problem. So I sent it back. The replacement arrived the other day and shows the same problem. I contacted MSI yet again and they said that nobody else has reported memory slot problems on this board and it must be my processor. So my score so far is, out of six boards of this model, I have: One where all four slots work. One which was dead on arrival. Four where only memory slots 1 and 2 work. Before I tear my other machines apart and start swapping processors again I thought I would ask if anyone else has this exact model motherboard and could confirm that all four memory slots either do or do not work. According to MSI you should be able to just plug a single memory module into any of the slots and it will work (and it does on the one mobo I have which works correctly). If you have not yet used all four slots, this is a good time to test them so you know if you can expand your memory in the future. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

• (Why) are IEC C5/C6 connectors a necessity? Why not use C13/C14?

  That's a question I was asking myself the first time I saw such a weird C5 plug. That was a while ago, but I came across it again and haven't found an answer yet. The only thing I could find out is that C5 is with 2.5A and C13 with 10A. But I guess it would technically be no problem building an AC adapter (e.g. for laptops) in which you plug the far more common C13 connector. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_connector

Also, I have a discussion board retention policy right now that isn't working properly. The criteria is: Last Updated + 30 days Delete There are plenty of dicussion items that are long past "Last Updated". Any ideas why?

  I am debugging a problem where MoinMoin on CentOS is throwing a permissions error, but I can't track down where the problematic file / directory is. I know I could try to catch all the file opens when I respawn apache, but I'm hoping there is a way to map file 7 to a real filename... is there a way to do this?

• Cant access websites internally but can externally, happened all of a sudden on Windows Server 2008

  Without any type of change I can access sites from within my server, not even Google. I can access them externally. I have no idea where to start. My internet Lan Settings are set to automatic and not to proxy. Nothing was changed on my end, how can I diagnose this issue? • MOSS 2007 SP2 DB index maintanance

  I've read in the "About Service Pack 2 for SharePoint Products and Technologies" paper that SP2 includes an update for the Update Statistics Timer Job that causes SharePoint to run SQL Server's online index rebuild feature (p.4). I'm uncertain of the terminology here but is this the rebuild that SQL Server uses for minor fragmentation (up to around 40%) and leaves the DB online? I'm also guessing that this will therefore not rebuild severely fragmented indexes as I think this requires the DB to come offline. Can someone please confirm my belief here?

• Can't ping static IP from internal network, only from outside

• ESXi with non-headless VM

  I'm going to receive a Xeon Server/Workstation soon and I was thinking about installing ESXi to host some server applications that I want (ex: SVN server, Web server, media server, etc). Most of these will be headless VM's. My question is: on top of all these headless VM's, is it possible for ESXi to have another VM that would be non-headless (so that it will output video through the VGA/DVI port)? Or are all VM's within ESXi only accessible through remote connections? I'll be using this non-headless VM like a regular workstation: browsing, development, media, gaming maybe. The other alternative I was thinking about is to install a very lightweight operating system and have the headless VM's running in Virtualbox. If it is possible to have have a non-headless VM, what would be the performance compared to a regular workstation? Noticeable or not when gaming?

• Find/Replace Paragraph End (^13) in Microsoft Word 2007 Merges Paragraphs

  I need to replace a target at the beginning of lines with something else. Without wildcards, I can say to replace "^pTarget" with "^pReplacement". With wildcards enabled, I use replace "^13Target" with "^13Replacement". The replacement is successful except that the paragraph is now merged with the previous one in a strange way: The end-paragraph mark is still in place and the paragraph begins on a new line, but Triple clicking to select paragraph selects both the changed paragraph and the one above In a macro, starting in the paragraph above and extending the selection to the end of paragraph causes both paragraphs to be selected. Inter-paragraph spacing disappears between the changed paragraph and the one above. In essence, the paragraph boundary has been removed although the end-paragraph mark is still shown. To duplicate this problem, make a new document Line 1 Line 2 Line 3 (separate paragraphs). Find and replace (with wildcards on) "^13" with "^13". If your result is the same as mine, you will see the problems listed above. I can work around this in the usual way of replacing ^p with something else first, e.g. "^p" = "$", then "$target" = "$replacement", but I'm curious about what's going on. (This is using Word 2007 on Windows 7) I don't know Word XML, but the XML output seems to correspond with the above. Replacing ^13 with ^13 moves the paragraphs together in almost the same way as replacing end-paragraph with end-line (^p = ^l). • Transferring DHCP using Windows Server Migration Tool - Why is Powershell is crashing on the import of the .mig file?

  I am migrating DHCP from a windows server 2003R2 DC to a Windows Server 2008R2 DC I've followed this video and its predecessor (Installing Windows Server Migration Tools) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/video/migrating-dhcp-using-the-windows-server-2008-r2-migration-tools.aspx I went through everything smoothly until the last step. I have exported a .mig file with my DHCP configuration on the old 2003r2 server. I transferred this .mig file over to my 2008R2 server, when running the import command, it will appear to work for a minute or two and then I get a generic windows "Powershell has stopped working" error and I have to close the program. Under the problem details I see the following: FileVersionOfSystemManagementAutomation: 6.1.7600.16385 InnermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException OutermostExceptionType: System.AccessViolationException DeepestPowerShellFrame: unknown OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.272.7 LocaleID: 1033 Seems like there are permissions issues maybe? I am running powershell as an admin and am logged in to the server as a domain administrator. Any Ideas? Thanks

• P2V Wouldn't Boot, Rebuilt initrd, Need to Clean Up

  We have a CentOS 5.4 server (build 2.6.18-164.el5xen). We went to P2V this server so we can have redundancy, the physical only has one PSU. The P2V only completed 99% of the way, we have a VMWare ticket opened, but they marked the ticket as low priority. I was able to boot into a rescue disc of Red Hat 5.4 and rebuild the initrd with the help of this blog post. Now the only issue is the original server had a modified initrd, which was also from a different OS build and made by an outside provider. We do not have a document outlining modifications. My question is, is it at all possible to copy the initrd off of the physical server and replace it on the virtual and some how have the virtual machine boot? Thanks for any input. Edit: I copied the initrd img from the physical and it recreated the original issue. • PC cannot ping another PC on my home network

  Hello, I am running Windows 7 on my PC, and I am running a Windows 2008 Server VM in Windows Virtual PC. Both machines have network connectivity. However, I cannot ping the VM from the host neither by computer name nor IP. I can ping the host machine from the VM both by computer name and IP. Is there something I need to enable on the VM to allow it to be seen by other machines on my network? Thanks!

• How to recover deleted files on ext3 fs

  I have a drive which was using the ext3 filesystem. I am told that about 10Gb of data was deleted off the drive (probably via rm). The drive is currently mounted as read-only to preserve all data. Does anyone know of a method to restore some or all of the data? Also if it helps, the OS was Fedora. I've also been told that the data is mostly ASCII fortan source code and Matlab files. Conclusion I have finally managed to get the data back, and with the simplest means ever! After weeks of trying and failing to bring back much of any data, I brought someone in today to take a look at it and offer suggestions, he simply cd'd to the directory and everything was there! It was never lost in the first place!!! Needless to say I feel really dumb right now, but I learned quite a lot with this whole fiasco. At any rate, while I was looking through data forensics solutions, I found that the Autopsy, or more specifically the SleuthKit was the most helpful. So I will accept that as the final answer. I would also like to note for anyone that comes across this later on that the most up-voted (currently) answer by sekenre was also helpful and I learned a lot, but ultimately it did not help with the type (very many, and some being very large) of files I was dealing with. So thank to all you that provided suggestions and wish you all the best!

• WSUS report hide not approved updates

  I have a WSUS server which is configured as a replica of the upstream server. My parent organization requires that it is a replica. However, they are not always the fastest at approving updates. I would like to know if there is a way to exclude Unapproved updates from the "Updates Needed" tally. I consistently have 2-3 updates missing from all of my computers, and when I check on them, they are all listed as Unapproved. Any way to do this? Thanks!

• Sending a file to uCLinux

  I have a board running uClinux, and I need to send a file to it, but I'm not sure how... I have a RS232 port, and Ethernet port with an IP address at my disposal, I can telnet to the board, but uCLinux doesn't have a built in FTP client. What sort of options do I have here for transferring files from my Windows 7 (or OpenSUSE) machine(s) to this board? EDIT I just found I have a TFTP server on it: # tftp BusyBox v0.60.5 (2012.07.09-14:05+0000) multi-call binary Usage: tftp [OPTION]... HOST [PORT] But I can't find any good information on how to use TFTP. And looking around google I'm seeing it's good for loading binary images, so I'm assume anything could be sent, but I'm not sure.

I'm a VBA rookie and tried just replacing the Set Messages line with this which resulted in a Run-time error '13': Type mismatch which I think refers to a mismatch of the Dim Messages and the Set Messages commands. I've tried using different Dim definitions with no luck. I'm guessing that someone who knows VBA will see the way to do this right away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Chrome Lockups Windows 7 64-bit

  I'm running Google Chrome (6.0.427.0 dev) on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (AMD Phenom 3.00 GHz, 8 GB RAM). The computer lockups hard after running Chrome for about five minutes. The lockup happens whether Chrome is actually being used to browse web sites or it is just idling. No programs can be started or interacted with when this happens. The computer must be power-cycled to recover. The lockup happens regardless of which web sites are being browsed. The system event logs do not show any events around the time when the lockup transpired. All other applications run just fine on this system. In fact, Chrome ran without issue for several months on this system (the system was brand new 03-2010). I also run the same version of Chrome on other computers (Windows XP SP3) without issue. I've come to really like Chrome and use it as my default browser whenever possible. What could be causing Chrome to cause the system to lockup as it does? Does Chrome have any logs that aren't part of the Windows event log? Does Chrome have a debug command line switch that might reveal more about what happens?

• Wordpress 3 multi-site install

  Hello, Trying to figure out if this is possible... My company has a cms product that was written in Java and we decided to use Wordpress to run blogs for our clients. Obviously, Wordpress does not run on tomcat(at least not by default) so we installed Pound(http://www.apsis.ch/pound/) on our server and have setup any Apache and Tomcat on different ports. When "/blog/" is requested, the request is directed to Apache. This works fine but we would like to use Wordpress multi site so that we can manage all the blogs from a single interface. We would also like the url for every site to be "/blog/" example: http://www.site1.com/blog/ http://www.site2.com/blog/ I'm thinking it would have to be done with apache??? Is it even possible?
