  • Linux servers going into Halt when pressing Control-D in putty or exit in the shell

    - by Itai Ganot
Since today at noon, there's a number of Linux CentOS servers which are going to Halt whenever i type exit or use Control-D to close the putty window. Did anyone encounter this weird behavior before? I've checked the aliases list on the servers and there is no alias regarding halt command. After the server came online i've checked the history and saw a "logout" command there but nothing which is related to Halt. At first, i thought it happens only from my computer but later i realized that it happens to everyone which types exit, logout or control+d. 2 of these server are our main iptables firewalls and so it's super critical, your assistance is much appreciated. It looks like that, and it only happens on servers with active IPTables: [root@srv1 bin]# ssh srv2 root@srv2's password: Last login: Sun Nov 11 17:19:41 2012 from 192.168.12.98 [root@srv2 ~]# vim /etc/crontab [root@srv2 ~]# exit logout Broadcast message from root (pts/1) (Tue Nov 13 10:44:04 2012): The system is going down for system halt NOW! Connection to srv2 closed. [root@srv1 bin]# In my troubleshooting steps i came across the command strace, and so i've opened two bash windows to one of the problematic server and i used strace -p PID_of_bash. When i typed in exit in the first shell it did go to halt, attached is the strace output, if you can check it out and tell me if you see anything suspicious i'd be more than thankful. • Better use on the name of variables

    - by Cuartico
I have a method that looks like this: Public Function NormalizeStreetAddress(country As Namespace.Country, streetAddress As Namespace.StreetAddress) _ As Namespace.StreetAddress Dim _streetAddress As New Namespace.StreetAddress = streetAddress If My.Settings.Streeteable = True Then Dim _AddressCustom As New Namespace.AddressCustom _streetAddress = _AddressCustom.NormalizeStreetAddress(country, streetAddress) End If Return _streetAddress End Function I receive a streetAddress object, but inside the method I need to use another streetAddress object which I called _streetAddress — is that following the standard? A friend of mine told me that object names such as _yourNameObject are for global variables, but I can't find info about this and I want to make this method more readable.

  • Sex - in domain name is this bad???

    - by user3583
In short I am working with a company that does trade shows... one of their new domain names has the word 'sex' in but completely innocently. EXAMPLE: www. someproductsexpo .com (Being 'some' 'products' 'expo'). The content is completely inoffensive and I do not see there being any other things that would flag either the web or any emails sent from [email protected] as inappropriate. I was just wondering if any has experiences of any domains like this or comments to add? Thanks

  • Proper Method name for XML builder

    - by Wesley
I think this is the right stack for this. I have a helper class which builds CAML queries (SharePoint XML for getting list items from SQL) There is one method that is flexibly used to build the queries that get all related votes and comments for a social item. I don't want to call it BuildVoteorCommentXML or something long winded like that. Is there a good naming convention for getting all Join/Foreign Key objects from a core object?

  • What is the name of this tree?

    - by Daniel
It has a single root and each node has 0..N ordered sub-nodes . The keys represent a distinct set of paths. Two trees can only be merged if they share a common root. It needs to support, at minimum: insert, merge, enumerate paths. For this tree: The +-------+----------------+ | | | cat cow dog + +--------+ + | | | | drinks jumps moos barks + | milk the paths would be: The cat drinks milk The cow jumps The cow moos The dog barks It's a bit like a trie. What is it?

I am currently running a linux bridge in the following configuration ADSL Modem: 192.168.1.1 Linux Bridge: eth0: 192.168.1.2 eth1: no address Wireless Router: 192.168.0.1 My issue is that i cannot access the "Linux Bridge" shares using the WINS name of the server via client systems (yes i understand it is a transparent bridge but i can access it via the 192.168.1.2 address this is not on the same subnet as the client systems). This is the global section of my SMB.CONF [global] unix extensions = off os level = 20 netbios name = server guest account = nobody server string = 447 Server security = share #unix extensions = no #wins support = yes #wins server = 192.168.0.1 name resolve order = wins lmhosts hosts bcast interfaces bridge1 eth0 eth1 lo bind interfaces only = yes Can i access a bridged server using it's WINS name to access samba shares? Cheers Chris

  • Intermediate certificates on NLB load balanced servers

    - by MrVimes
I am fairly sure I know how to install the 'main' certificate on load balanced servers (install on one, export, import to the others) but I'm not quite sure what to do about the intermediate certificate (the one you install using the certificates snap in in mmc) Do I manually install it using mmc on each server? or is there a similar process involved to the main cert (install, then export, then import on the others?)

  • Accessing Windows from Linux/Mac by name using TCP/IP

    - by stevekuo
What are some solutions to access Windows by its computer name from Linux and Mac using TCP/IP. That is, from terminal I want to be able to ping my Windows PCs using its host name. My setup is: Various machines running Ubuntu, Windows XP and OS X. Networked using a consumer grade wireless router which provides DHCP. The only DNS is the ISP's, which resolves Internet names and not local host names. The Windows machines can ping each other by name. The Ubuntu and OS X machines can only ping Windows by IP address (name doesn't work).

  • Accessing SQL with the PC name not the IP

    - by Cornelius
I'm trying to connect to a SQL instance (default instance) on a machine. When using the IP of the machine it connects to the machine. Using the name of the machine on that machine you are able to establish a connection to the SQL instance but using the machine name on another PC the connection cannot be established. And gives the error A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. ... (Microsoft Server, Error: 10060) The machine that I am trying to establish the connection from can ping the machine with the SQL instance both on the IP and on the name. Why would this be and how can I fix it? Edit: pinging the name does resolve the correct IP. Pinging the FQDN also works correctly.

    - by Charliz

  • Should we increase local port range limit on busy memcached servers

    - by Majid Azimi
nixcraft has a tutorial on configuring memcached server(link) at the end says: For busy memcached server you need to increase system file descriptor and IP port limits here is the code to do so: # Increase system IP port limits net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = 2000 65000 why should we do this? memcached is a server and it will respond to clients with its listening port which is 11211 by default. So we shouldn't be limited by local port range.(net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range) The only limit is file descriptors. local port range should be a limit for servers like squid which generate local traffic

  • iptables allow dyndns domain name and auto update rules

    - by user3215
I have registered with dyndns domain for my dynamically changing public ip address to use with iptable rules. On a server I've allowed some ports for this domain in the iptables configuration like the below entries: -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 3306 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT But when ever my modem restarts, I couldn't connect to these allowed ports as public ip changes with modem restart and are not updated in the iptables on the server. Is there any option to automatically update iptable rules on server.

  • How to monitor streaming servers

    - by pcdinh
Hi all, I have had a bunch of Linux based streaming servers that employed lighttpd web server to provide video streaming via port 80. Recently, our service is very slow. Therefore, I would like to ask if there is a good software package that helps us monitor and record our bandwidth usage, lighttpd established connections, TCP sync connections, disk I/O ... over time. Any suggestions? Regards, Dinh

  • Name of my sql server instance from outside the network

    - by Michel
Hi, normally i connect to my sql server instance from my local computer, and then the server name to connect to is the name of my laptop. So i can connect to server instance 'MichelLaptop' But now i'm trying to connect to my server from outside my network, and the first thing i wonder is: what is the name of the instance? i've made a redirect to my local machine in the DNS of my domain, so i said (this is not the real data) testsql.mydomain.com goes to 190.191.192.193 and when i ping testsql.mydomain.com, i get a response from 190.191.192.193 But what then is the server name?
