  • Is there any good reason for private methods existence in C# (and OOP in general)?

    - by Piotr Lopusiewicz
I don't mean to troll but I really don't get it. Why would language designers allow private methods instead of some naming convention (see __ in Python) ? I searched for the answer and usual arguments are: a) To make the implementation cleaner/avoid long vertical list of methods in IDE autocompletion b) To announce to the world which methods are public interface and which may change and are just for implementation purpose c) Readability Ok so now, all of those could be achieved by naming all private methods with __ prefix or by "private" keyword which doesn't have any implications other than be information for IDE (don't put those in autocompletion) and other programers (don't use it unless you really must). Hell, one could even require unsafe-like keyword to access private methods to really discourage this. I am asking this because I work with some c# code and I keep changing private methods to public for test purposes as many in-between private methods (like string generators for xml serialization) are very useful for debugging purposes (like writing some part of string to log file etc.). So my question is: Is there anything which is achieved by access restriction but couldn't be achieved by naming conventions without restricting the access ?

  • Meta package / quick reference for command line string manipulation tools?

    - by Dylan McCall
The latest version of the Scribes text editor lets us select some text, hit Alt+X, and then run an arbitrary command. For example, I can run the sort command and the selected text is replaced appropriately. This is quite useful but I am also not very well-versed in awk and the like. Is there something I can grab that will provide more of these commands like sort? Maybe a package with a whole bunch of handy, task-specific string manipulation commands?

  • Is it a good idea to add robots "noindex" meta tags to deep low content pages, e.g. product model data

    - by Cognize
I'm considering adding robots "noindex, follow" tags to the very numerous product data pages that are linked from the product style pages in our online store. For example, each product style has a page with full text content on the product: http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE Then many data pages with technical data for each model code is linked from the product style page. http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE-1 http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE-2 http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE-3 It is these technical data pages that I intend to add the no index code to, as I imagine that this might stop these pages from cannibalizing keyword authority for more important content rich pages on the site. Any advice appreciated.

  • How to setup server to accept pem(private RSA key) login w/o password like EC2?

    - by Chandler.Huang
I am manage a group of VM and I need to setup all vm create a ssh tunnel to a specific host A. One way to do this is append public key of each VM to host's authorized_keys, but I guess I have to do the append each time i create a VM. So I am trying to config host A to accept pem or private key login without passowrd, just like EC2, client can use "ssh -i PEM" to login host A. But I have tried in vain for hours. I create a rsa public/private key and let VM use the private key to login, no matter what I do, host a still ask for password. Is there anything I missed ? Thanks.

  • How can we tell what driven the Private bytes spiking.

    - by ronin
I have websites running on .Net Framework 2.0 environment. For recent every day my website becomes slow at certain time and I need to recycle my app pool. I checked the log file found that the private bytes will spike during that time slot. Through some research I already know that the managed code and unmanaged code consists of Privates and we can identify which one cause the spike based on "Bytes in all heaps" counter. But I can't find a way to dig deeper. Is there any way that I can find out what driven my private bytes spike? How can we see what the private bytes are being used for? Thanks, Ronin

  • Object desing problem for simple school application

    - by Aragornx
I want to create simple school application that provides grades, notes, presence, etc. for students, teachers and parents. I'm trying to design objects for this problem and I'm little bit confused - because I'm not very experienced in class designing. Some of my present objects are : class PersonalData() { private String name; private String surename; private Calendar dateOfBirth; [...] } class Person { private PersonalData personalData; } class User extends Person { private String login; private char[] password; } class Student extends Person { private ArrayList<Counselor> counselors = new ArrayList<>(); } class Counselor extends Person { private ArrayList<Student> children = new ArrayList<>(); } class Teacher extends Person { private ArrayList<ChoolClass> schoolClasses = new ArrayList<>(); private ArrayList<Subject> subjects = new ArrayList<>(); } This is of course a general idea. But I'm sure it's not the best way. For example I want that one person could be a Teacher and also a Parent(Counselor) and present approach makes me to have two Person objects. I want that user after successful logging in get all roles that it has (Student or Teacher or (Teacher & Parent) ). I think I should make and use some interfaces but I'm not sure how to do this right. Maybe like this: interface Role { } interface TeacherRole implements Role { void addGrade( Student student, Grade grade, [...] ); } class Teacher implements TeacherRole { private Person person; [...] } class User extends Person{ ArrayList<Role> roles = new ArrayList<>(); } Please if anyone could help me to make this right or maybe just point me to some literature/article that covers practical objects design.

  • Problem with onRetainNonConfigurationInstance

    - by David
I am writing a small app using the Android SDK, 1.6 target, and the Eclipse plug-in. I have layouts for both portrait and landscape mode, and most everything is working well. I say most because I am having issues with the orientation change. One part of the app has a ListView "on top of" another section. That section consists of 4 checkboxes, a button, and some TextViews. That is the portrait version. The landscape version replaces the ListView with a Spinner and rearranges some of the other components (but leaves the ALL resource ids the same). While in either orientation things work like they should. It's when the app switches orientation that things go off. Only 1 of the checkboxes maintains it's state throughout both layout changes. The other three CBs only maintain their state when going from landscape-portrait. I am also having problem getting the ListView/Spinner to correctly set themselves on changing. I am using onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() and creating a custom object that is returned. When I step through the code during a orientation change, the custom object is successfully pulled back out the the ether, and the widgets are being set to the correct values (inspecting them). But for some reason, once the onCreate is done, the checkboxes are not set to true. public class SkillSelectionActivity extends Activity { private Button rollDiceButton; private ListView skillListView; • How do you manage private queue permissions on a windows server 2008 cluster?

    - by David
On windows server 2003 there was an option to allow a resource to interact with the desktop, this allowed you to run computer management mmc snap-in on the virtual name of the cluster, allowing you to manage permissions of the private message queues on the cluster. Windows Server 2008 failover clustering has removed that checkbox, so applications can no longer interact with the desktop. My question is then how does one go about managing private queue permissions on the clustered (the virtual name) server?

  • Can I prevent Oracle users from creating public synonyms but allow private ones?

    - by ninesided
I've had a few issues where users have mistakenly created public synonyms which have led to people thinking some objects are in one schema when they're actually in another schema. Everyone knows they should be using private synonyms, but occasionally they forget or they make a mistake and someone gets burned. Is it possible to GRANT users the permission to create private synonyms but disallow public ones?

  • C#: System.Lazy&lt;T&gt; and the Singleton Design Pattern

    - by James Michael Hare
So we've all coded a Singleton at one time or another.  It's a really simple pattern and can be a slightly more elegant alternative to global variables.  Make no mistake, Singletons can be abused and are often over-used -- but occasionally you find a Singleton is the most elegant solution. For those of you not familiar with a Singleton, the basic Design Pattern is that a Singleton class is one where there is only ever one instance of the class created.  This means that constructors must be private to avoid users creating their own instances, and a static property (or method in languages without properties) is defined that returns a single static instance. 1: public class Singleton 2: { 3: // the single instance is defined in a static field 4: private static readonly Singleton _instance = new Singleton(); 5:  6: // constructor private so users can't instantiate on their own 7: private Singleton() 8: { 9: } 10:  11: // read-only property that returns the static field 12: public static Singleton Instance 13: { 14: get 15: { 16: return _instance; 17: } 18: } 19: } This is the most basic singleton, notice the key features: Static readonly field that contains the one and only instance. Constructor is private so it can only be called by the class itself. Static property that returns the single instance. Looks like it satisfies, right?  There's just one (potential) problem.  C# gives you no guarantee of when the static field _instance will be created.  This is because the C# standard simply states that classes (which are marked in the IL as BeforeFieldInit) can have their static fields initialized any time before the field is accessed.  This means that they may be initialized on first use, they may be initialized at some other time before, you can't be sure when. So what if you want to guarantee your instance is truly lazy.  That is, that it is only created on first call to Instance?  Well, there's a few ways to do this.  First we'll show the old ways, and then talk about how .Net 4.0's new System.Lazy<T> type can help make the lazy-Singleton cleaner. Obviously, we could take on the lazy construction ourselves, but being that our Singleton may be accessed by many different threads, we'd need to lock it down. 1: public class LazySingleton1 2: { 3: // lock for thread-safety laziness 4: private static readonly object _mutex = new object(); 5:  6: // static field to hold single instance 7: private static LazySingleton1 _instance = null; 8:  9: // property that does some locking and then creates on first call 10: public static LazySingleton1 Instance 11: { 12: get 13: { 14: if (_instance == null) 15: { 16: lock (_mutex) 17: { 18: if (_instance == null) 19: { 20: _instance = new LazySingleton1(); 21: } 22: } 23: } 24:  25: return _instance; 26: } 27: } 28:  29: private LazySingleton1() 30: { 31: } 32: } This is a standard double-check algorithm so that you don't lock if the instance has already been created.  However, because it's possible two threads can go through the first if at the same time the first time back in, you need to check again after the lock is acquired to avoid creating two instances. Pretty straightforward, but ugly as all heck.  Well, you could also take advantage of the C# standard's BeforeFieldInit and define your class with a static constructor.  It need not have a body, just the presence of the static constructor will remove the BeforeFieldInit attribute on the class and guarantee that no fields are initialized until the first static field, property, or method is called.   1: public class LazySingleton2 2: { 3: // because of the static constructor, this won't get created until first use 4: private static readonly LazySingleton2 _instance = new LazySingleton2(); 5:  6: // Returns the singleton instance using lazy-instantiation 7: public static LazySingleton2 Instance 8: { 9: get { return _instance; } 10: } 11:  12: // private to prevent direct instantiation 13: private LazySingleton2() 14: { 15: } 16:  17: // removes BeforeFieldInit on class so static fields not 18: // initialized before they are used 19: static LazySingleton2() 20: { 21: } 22: } Now, while this works perfectly, I hate it.  Why?  Because it's relying on a non-obvious trick of the IL to guarantee laziness.  Just looking at this code, you'd have no idea that it's doing what it's doing.  Worse yet, you may decide that the empty static constructor serves no purpose and delete it (which removes your lazy guarantee).  Worse-worse yet, they may alter the rules around BeforeFieldInit in the future which could change this. So, what do I propose instead?  .Net 4.0 adds the System.Lazy type which guarantees thread-safe lazy-construction.  Using System.Lazy<T>, we get: 1: public class LazySingleton3 2: { 3: // static holder for instance, need to use lambda to construct since constructor private 4: private static readonly Lazy<LazySingleton3> _instance 5: = new Lazy<LazySingleton3>(() => new LazySingleton3()); 6:  7: // private to prevent direct instantiation. 8: private LazySingleton3() 9: { 10: } 11:  12: // accessor for instance 13: public static LazySingleton3 Instance 14: { 15: get 16: { 17: return _instance.Value; 18: } 19: } 20: } Note, you need your lambda to call the private constructor as Lazy's default constructor can only call public constructors of the type passed in (which we can't have by definition of a Singleton).  But, because the lambda is defined inside our type, it has access to the private members so it's perfect. Note how the Lazy<T> makes it obvious what you're doing (lazy construction), instead of relying on an IL generation side-effect.  This way, it's more maintainable.  Lazy<T> has many other uses as well, obviously, but I really love how elegant and readable it makes the lazy Singleton.

  • Nginx and client certificates from hierarchical OpenSSL-based certification authorities

    - by Fmy Oen
I'm trying to set up root certification authority, subordinate certification authority and to generate the client certificates signed by any of this CA that nginx 0.7.67 on Debian Squeeze will accept. My problem is that root CA signed client certificate works fine while subordinate CA signed one results in "400 Bad Request. The SSL certificate error". Step 1: nginx virtual host configuration: server { server_name test.local; access_log /var/log/nginx/test.access.log; listen 443 default ssl; keepalive_timeout 70; ssl_protocols SSLv3 TLSv1; ssl_ciphers AES128-SHA:AES256-SHA:RC4-SHA:DES-CBC3-SHA:RC4-MD5; ssl_certificate /etc/nginx/ssl/server.crt; ssl_certificate_key /etc/nginx/ssl/server.key; ssl_client_certificate /etc/nginx/ssl/client.pem; ssl_verify_client on; ssl_session_cache shared:SSL:10m; ssl_session_timeout 5m; location / { proxy_pass http://testsite.local/; } } Step 2: PKI infrastructure organization for both root and subordinate CA (based on this article): # mkdir ~/pki && cd ~/pki # mkdir rootCA subCA # cp -v /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf rootCA/ # cd rootCA/ # mkdir certs private crl newcerts; touch serial; echo 01 > serial; touch index.txt; touch crlnumber; echo 01 > crlnumber # cp -Rvp * ../subCA/ Almost no changes was made to rootCA/openssl.cnf: [ CA_default ] dir = . # Where everything is kept ... certificate = $dir/certs/rootca.crt # The CA certificate ... private_key = $dir/private/rootca.key # The private key and to subCA/openssl.cnf: [ CA_default ] dir = . # Where everything is kept ... certificate = $dir/certs/subca.crt # The CA certificate ... private_key = $dir/private/subca.key # The private key Step 3: Self-signed root CA certificate generation: # openssl genrsa -out ./private/rootca.key -des3 2048 # openssl req -x509 -new -key ./private/rootca.key -out certs/rootca.crt -config openssl.cnf Enter pass phrase for ./private/rootca.key: You are about to be asked to enter information that will be incorporated into your certificate request. • Is it a good object-oriented-design practice to send a pointer to private data to another class?

    - by Denis
Hello everyone, There is well known recommendation not to include into class interface method that returns a pointer (or a reference) to private data of the class. But what do you think about public method of a class that sends to another class a pointer to the private data of the first one. For example: class A { public: void fA(void) {_b.fB(&_var)}; private: B _b; int _var; }; I think that it is some sort of data hiding damage: the private data define state of their own class, so why should one class delegate changes of its own state to another one? What do you think? Denis

  • How to give ASP.NET access to a private key in a certificate in the certificate store?

    - by thames
    I have an ASP.NET application that accesses private key in a certificate in the certificates store. On Windows Server 2003 I was able to use winhttpcertcfg.exe to give private key access to the NETWORK SERVICE account. How do I give permissions to access a Private Key in a certificate in the certificate store (Local Computer\Personal) on a Windows Server 2008 R2 in an IIS 7.5 website? I've tried giving Full Trust access to "Everyone", "IIS AppPool\DefaultAppPool", "IIS_IUSRS", and everyother security account I could find using the Certificates MMC (Server 2008 R2). However the below code demonstrates that the code does not have access to the Private Key of a certificate that was imported with the private key. The code instead throws and error everytime the private key property is accessed. Default.aspx <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Default.aspx.cs" Inherits="_Default" %> <%@ Import Namespace="System.Security.Cryptography.X509Certificates" %> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head runat="server"> <title></title> </head> <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <div> <asp:Repeater ID="repeater1" runat="server"> <HeaderTemplate> <table> <tr> <td> Cert </td> <td> Public Key </td> <td> Private Key </td> </tr> </HeaderTemplate> <ItemTemplate> <tr> <td> <%#((X509Certificate2)Container.DataItem).GetNameInfo(X509NameType.SimpleName, false) %> </td> <td> <%#((X509Certificate2)Container.DataItem).HasPublicKeyAccess() %> </td> <td> <%#((X509Certificate2)Container.DataItem).HasPrivateKeyAccess() %> </td> </tr> </ItemTemplate> <FooterTemplate> </table></FooterTemplate> </asp:Repeater> </div> </form> </body> </html> Default.aspx.cs using System; using System.Security.Cryptography; using System.Security.Cryptography.X509Certificates; using System.Web.UI; public partial class _Default : Page { public X509Certificate2Collection Certificates; protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Local Computer\Personal var store = new X509Store(StoreLocation.LocalMachine); // create and open store for read-only access store.Open(OpenFlags.ReadOnly); Certificates = store.Certificates; repeater1.DataSource = Certificates; repeater1.DataBind(); } } public static class Extensions { public static string HasPublicKeyAccess(this X509Certificate2 cert) { try { AsymmetricAlgorithm algorithm = cert.PublicKey.Key; } catch (Exception ex) { return "No"; } return "Yes"; } public static string HasPrivateKeyAccess(this X509Certificate2 cert) { try { string algorithm = cert.PrivateKey.KeyExchangeAlgorithm; } catch (Exception ex) { return "No"; } return "Yes"; } }

  • How to set up an Android source repo while hosting the git trees as private repositories on github?

    - by gby
Hello there, I am trying to set up a private repository of Android source code while hosting the git trees on github as private repos. I have no problem changing the manifest.xml file to point to public git trees hosted on github in the same way that CynagonMod does, but when trying to point to private repos I get the following error when trying "repo sync": Initializing project username/android_external_webkit ... fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly error: Cannot fetch username/android_external_webkit Where username/android_external_webkit is of course a private github repo of the same name. I understand the error occurs since I did not specify my user name and credentials to github, but I fail to see how to do it in the manifest.xml with repo. Any ideas? Thanks! Gilad

  • Is there any benefit to declaring a private property with a getter and setter?

    - by AmoebaMan17
I am reviewing another developer's code and he has written a lot of code for class level variables that is similar to the following: /// <summary> /// how often to check for messages /// </summary> private int CheckForMessagesMilliSeconds { get; set; } /// <summary> /// application path /// </summary> private string AppPath { get; set; } Doesn't coding this way add unnecessary overhead since the variable is private? Am I not considering a situation where this pattern of coding is required for private variables?

  • Should methods that are required to be executed in a specific order be private?

    - by TooFat
    I have a Class that retrieves some data and images does some stuff to them and them uploads them to a third party app using web services. The object needs to perform some specific steps in order. My question is should I be explicitly exposing each method publicly like so. myObject obj = new myObject(); obj.RetrieveImages(); obj.RetrieveAssociatedData(); obj.LogIntoThirdPartyWebService(); obj.UploadStuffToWebService(); or should all of these methods be private and encapsulated in a single public method like so. public class myObject() { private void RetrieveImages(){}; private void RetrieveAssociatedData(){}; private void LogIntoThirdPartyWebService(){}; private void UploadStuffToWebService(){}; public void DoStuff() { this.RetrieveImages(); this.RetrieveAssociatedData(); this.LogIntoThirdPartyWebService(); this.UploadStuffToWebService(); } } which is called like so. myObject obj = new myObject(); obj.DoStuff();

  • How to make an Asp.net MVC 2 website have a Private Beta Mode.

    - by Mark Kitz
I am creating an ASP.Net MVC website that I am launching soon in private beta. What I am using. ASP.NET MVC 2 ASP.NET Sql Membership Provider Authorization Attributes on ActionMethods. ex. [EditorsOnly] What I am trying to accomplish: During the private Beta period of my website, I want no anonymous users to access my site. Only Beta Testers of my site should be able to login and use my site as normal. After the private beta period people can access it using the security structure I already have set up. I am hoping I do not have to recompile but can have a setting in the webconfig to switch between Private Beta mode to Normal mode. Thanks for your suggestions.

  • How to import data from a Lotus private view into Access?

    - by PowerUser
I'm experimenting with Lotus private views for the first time and I finally made a private view that (more or less) has the data I want. I just need to get it into MS Access. If this was a standard shared view, I'd just fire up the ODBC administrator, and make a DSN to the database using the NotesSQL driver. Been there, done that. But you can't get to private views that way. So, how do I import the data from my private view into Access? (Also, I'm not one of the IT gurus in our company, so I can't just make a view and share it, even if it's hidden)

I have the private key stored as .key file.. -----BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY----- MIICXAIBAAKBgQD5YBS6V3APdgqaWAkijIUHRK4KQ6eChSaRWaw9L/4u8o3T1s8J rUFHQhcIo5LPaQ4BrIuzHS8yzZf0m3viCTdZAiDn1ZjC2koquJ53rfDzqYxZFrId 7a4QYUCvM0gqx5nQ+lw1KoY/CDAoZN+sO7IJ4WkMg5XbgTWlSLBeBg0gMwIDAQAB AoGASKDKCKdUlLwtRFxldLF2QPKouYaQr7u1ytlSB5QFtIih89N5Avl5rJY7/SEe rdeL48LsAON8DpDAM9Zg0ykZ+/gsYI/C8b5Ch3QVgU9m50j9q8pVT04EOCYmsFi0 DBnwNBRLDESvm1p6NqKEc7zO9zjABgBvwL+loEVa1JFcp5ECQQD9/sekGTzzvKa5 SSVQOZmbwttPBjD44KRKi6LC7rQahM1PDqmCwPFgMVpRZL6dViBzYyWeWxN08Fuv p+sIwwLrAkEA+1f3VnSgIduzF9McMfZoNIkkZongcDAzjQ8sIHXwwTklkZcCqn69 qTVPmhyEDA/dJeAK3GhalcSqOFRFEC812QJAXStgQCmh2iaRYdYbAdqfJivMFqjG vgRpP48JHUhCeJfOV/mg5H2yDP8Nil3SLhSxwqHT4sq10Gd6umx2IrimEQJAFNA1 ACjKNeOOkhN+SzjfajJNHFyghEnJiw3NlqaNmEKWNNcvdlTmecObYuSnnqQVqRRD cfsGPU661c1MpslyCQJBAPqN0VXRMwfU29a3Ve0TF4Aiu1iq88aIPHsT3GKVURpO XNatMFINBW8ywN5euu8oYaeeKdrVSMW415a5+XEzEBY= -----END RSA PRIVATE KEY----- And i extracted public key from ssl certificate file.. Below is the code i tried to verify if private key matches with ssl certificate or not.. I used the modulus[i.e. private key get modulus==public key get modulus] to check if they are matching.. And this seems to hold only for RSAKEYS.. But i want to check for other keys as well.. Is there any other alternative to do the same..?? private static boolean verifySignature(File serverCertificateFile, File serverCertificateKey) { try { byte[] certificateBytes = FileUtils.readFileToByteArray(serverCertificateFile); //byte[] keyBytes = FileUtils.readFileToByteArray(serverCertificateKey); RandomAccessFile raf = new RandomAccessFile(serverCertificateKey, "r"); byte[] buf = new byte[(int) raf.length()]; raf.readFully(buf); raf.close(); PKCS8EncodedKeySpec kspec = new PKCS8EncodedKeySpec(buf); KeyFactory kf; try { kf = KeyFactory.getInstance("RSA"); RSAPrivateKey privKey = (RSAPrivateKey) kf.generatePrivate(kspec); CertificateFactory certFactory = CertificateFactory.getInstance("X.509"); InputStream in = new ByteArrayInputStream(certificateBytes); //Generate Certificate in X509 Format X509Certificate cert = (X509Certificate) certFactory.generateCertificate(in); RSAPublicKey publicKey = (RSAPublicKey) cert.getPublicKey(); in.close(); return privKey.getModulus() == publicKey.getModulus(); } catch (NoSuchAlgorithmException ex) { logger.log(Level.SEVERE, "Such algorithm is not found", ex); } catch (CertificateException ex) { logger.log(Level.SEVERE, "certificate exception", ex); } catch (InvalidKeySpecException ex) { Logger.getLogger(CertificateConversion.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } } catch (IOException ex) { logger.log(Level.SEVERE, "Signature verification failed.. This could be because the file is in use", ex); } return false; } And the code isn't working either.. throws invalidkeyspec exception
