    Setup Windows 7 64-bit host OS running VirtualBox 4.2, with Ubuntu 12.04 guest OS. OpenSSH server is installed and running (ssh -v localhost connects locally in the guest machine). Can SSH to external servers (no outbound Windows firewall rule blocking port 22) Can ping the IP of the guest (192.168.56.101) Problem Using PuTTY to SSH to the IP of the guest OS (192.168.56.101), PuTTY returns almost immediately with Network error: connection refused How can I diagnose & resolve this issue?

    Question: What is the way to determine, ahead of time and without doing a full install of 64-bit Debian Testing NETINST, when Debian Testing has 32-bit libraries available and fully working and installable so that the following command works without broken package errors?: apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk The errors that occur when 32-bit libraries are not available, still in some broken state, or whatever is broken are detailed below. I already have concluded that "Just install Stable" is my stop-gap measure for now, but I would like to know the answer to the above question so as to avoid a lengthy installation process only to run into these problems at the very end. Details: I downloaded the 64-bit Debian Testing netinst a couple of days ago. This was "Jessie" built 20131014-06:07 via http://tinyurl.com/lejpa. This is weekly testing build. Yes, I know I should expect problems, and I did. I managed to get it completely installed and was able to invoke into GNOME, but not get past the 32-bit library problem. The problems starts when I attempt to install the 32-bit libraries via: apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk that returns: root@breath:~# apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: ia32-libs : Depends: ia32-libs-i386 but it is not installable ia32-libs-gtk : Depends: ia32-libs-i386 but it is not installable Depends: ia32-libs-gtk-i386 but it is not installable E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I then found an old (2012 is old to me) answer at ia32-libs : Depends: ia32-libs-i386 but it is not installable and even tried what they suggested there which was dpkg --add-architecture i386 apt-get update After executing the above, I tried again but got: root@breath:~# apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed.   • Internal/external DNS with subdomains

    I've got an internal DNS server (part of OS X server) and it's acting as the main DNS server for a specific (physical) site. When it can't resolve hostnames itself, it forwards requests to Google's DNS servers. Everything works well apart from a couple of issues, which I think may be related but can't get to the bottom of. I've got a number of intranet sites setup, that people can access by going to something like: intranet.mydomainname.com selfservice.mydomainname.com These point to various servers in the building that host these sites. Whether internal or external (without VPN), I can access these sites just dandy. Where the issue comes is when I want to host, say, test.mydomainname.com on an external server it fails to resolve as the primary zone for mydomainname.com is internal. How can I get it to look up Google's DNS (or an external one) for that zone if it's not in the list? I've tried everything I can think (adding my host's nameservers etc) of but nothing seems to work fully. Also I can't access intranet sites when connected via VPN and from what I can gather - I believe this might be related to the DNS issue but just wanted to give as much information as possible. Edit The domain mydomainname.com is hosted externally and pointed at the site's public IP. From there we can forward the requests to the relevant internal server. Externally everything works, internally though any subdomain of mydomainname.com is served locally, I want it to be served from Google's DNS / externally. DNS Configuration As per a request, here's the current DNS configuration (OS X server's DNS tab). I've blurred out the .private address as it's not really relevant but it's the server's name. The colored dots are just there to link everything together. Screenshot: In an attempt to clarify this is what I want: intranet.mydomain.com -> 192.168.0.12 selfservice.mydomain.com -> 192.168.0.13 *.mydomain.com -> forward to external DNS mydomain.com -> forward to external DNS At the moment any subdomain of mydomain.com is not forwarded on (think this is because of the primary zone being mydomain.com with a NS of intranet.mydomain.com but could do with a little nod in the right direction.

    I usually set name servers at an ISP, they often take 24 - 48 hours to resolve. If one has 2 separate sets of name servers (say from 2 domain parking companies) they want to send traffic to, is it possible to switch between the sets instantly without any delays? To be clear, how do you switch mydomain.com (ns1.nameserver1.com, ns2.nameserver1.com) to mydomain.com (ns1.nameserver2.com, ns2.nameserver2.com) instantly?

    I am working on a website that runs on WordPress. The an error occurs when accessing the blog page that it displays the RSS feed (in XML) rather than the posts. After some research I found out the when enabling mod_cache this error sometimes occurs. I see when looking at the apache2 modules enabled apache2ctl -M it shows that mod_cache, mod_mem_cache and mod_disc_cache are enabled. What should I disable in order to resolve this problem?

    I have two Bazaar (bzr) repositories that have very similar content. I'm trying to identify the differences and incrementally synchronize. My current strategy is to bzr add files to both repos and then use bzr merge to identify and resolve conflicts. The problem is that even if the file contents are identical it creates a conflict and a .moved file. What can I do to stop these conflicts or use a better workflow?

  • WinXP: File Record Segment nnnn is unreadable?

    I'm pretty sure that the drive is toast, except for the fact that this error is only showing up on one partition (it's out of a Dell computer, and has a couple of Dell partitions, which boot and work fine.) I've already purchased another hard drive, and re-installed WinXP, but when I re-connect this drive and reboot, I'm getting thousands of these errors. Is there any chance of recovering any files off this? Should I prevent XP from trying to resolve the problems?

    Hello, I bought a Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 web camera for may parent's Dell Dimension 3000 computer running XP SP 3, and I cannot get it to run. THe installation ran successfully, but when I try to run it, I get the error: Faulting application lifecam.exe, version 3.21.263.0, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5781, fault address 0x00012afb. The microsoft help link really didn't help... how do I even resolve this type of error? Thanks.

    Is there a way to capture all requests to arbitrary sub-domains which do not have a virtual host setup, and redirect to a custom 404 page in nginx? I will have a wild card A record setup *.example.com and all our users will have a sub-domain username.example.com. If someone enters a sub-domain which does not exist how can I redirect to a custom 404 page rather than have it resolve since wild card is setup?

    I am using RealVNC 4.5 Enterprise on my Windows 7 client. I use this to connect to a remote system which is also running RealVNC 4.5 (on Windows 7 again). And then i logoff the remote system (server) and all of a sudden the realvnc viewer on the client closes with the message : "Read/Select:Connection reset by peer (10054)" It also asks if i want to reconnect again. Any idea why this is happening and how do i resolve this?

Now if I setup john.app.example.com, then that also is displaying the web page of app.example.com, the DocumentRoot for john.app.example.com is different, still it shows the web page of app.example.com. how can I resolve this, so john.app.example.com displays the pages that are there in its DocumentRoot.

  • How to configure DNS so that www.example.com goes to one server, *.example.com to another

    I'm trying to set up my domain as follows, but I'm not actually sure if it's possible. I have a domain where I would like the base and www addresses to go to my static site, but others to go to my application server. For example: My domain is registered with Dreamhost, and my application is on a VPS at Webbynode. I've set up the domain in Dreamhost to use Webbynode's nameservers: ns1.dnswebby.com ns2.dnswebby.com ns3.dnswebby.com And in Webbynode I've set up a wildcard A record to point to the IP address of my VPS: * 1.2.3.4 A and this works nicely, if I go to app.example.com it resolves to my application server at Webbynode. However, what I'd like to do is have example.com and www.example.com go to my static site, hosted back at Dreamhost, whilst still having any other domain go to my app. What I've done to try and achieve this is set up these DNS "NS" entries at Webbynode, trying to get Dreamhost to resolve these domain names: (empty) ns1.dreamhost.com NS (empty) ns2.dreamhost.com NS (empty) ns3.dreamhost.com NS www ns1.dreamhost.com NS www ns2.dreamhost.com NS www ns3.dreamhost.com NS (I don't have a fixed IP address at Dreamhost so I can't just set up simple A records). However this doesn't work... does anyone have any idea if this is possible and if so how it could be done? Update: I've got this working now, as above for the domain (i.e. registered with Dreamhost, but using Webbynode's nameservers). To delegate the DNS for www.example.com to Dreamhost, I've got the following DNS entries set up: www.example.com. ns1.dreamhost.com. NS www.example.com. ns2.dreamhost.com. NS www.example.com. ns3.dreamhost.com. NS (note the full stops at the end) And to get example.com to resolve to my static site, I set up CNAME record: example.com. www.example.com. CNAME So now, example.com and www.example.com go to my static site on Dreamhost, and if they change the IP address of my shared hosting it won't affect me, and all other subdomains go to my application server. This seems to work nicely, but if anyone knows a better way to do it I'd be happy to hear it. Thanks to all who replied.

    I changed my grub boot options to add "vga=0x323" to them to resolve some issues with corrupted display during startup/shutdown on my laptop. The next time I booted the system up, I got a warning over the login screen saying Xfce Power Manager HAL Daemon not running The keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. After a minute or so, they start to work and the system functions as normal. How can I solve this?

  • 403 forbidden while submitting a POST request with image data via iPhone application

    I am creating an iOS application which allows users to send image/text data to my webserver via a POST request. I am successfully sending POSTS to the server when image data is not included in the request. Any time i POST with image data the server spits back a 403 forbidden. I have tried adding the following to the .htaccess file in the directory of the script with no luck: Options +Indexes FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI Order allow,deny Allow from all web browsers and Android devices can successfully POST with image data to the script, the only device which cannot is the iPhone. POSTING with data to other hosting providers works as expected - it is just this host(ipowerweb.com). i noticed that when i try to POST to ANY script on the server with data returns a 403 forbidden. another note: i can successfully post to another server that is hosted by ipowerweb, but mine cant seem to handle it. My host has tried to resolve the issue but cannot, and they have marked it on their end as "resolved", so no more help from them. I wish to keep this host as moving would be a pain - i will change hosts as a last resort, so please help me! Why am i getting this 403 forbidden error only when i submit data via my iPhone application?   • Windows Server 2008 DNS - restart after changing forwarder?

    I had a dns forwarder configured that seems to be choking on a particular server name so I switched to using google's dns as a forwarder (8.8.4.4). When I change that setting in Windows DNS (Server 2008 R2) Do i need to restart the dns service for the change to take effect? I ask because i can do a nslookup on the name using 8.8.4.4 and it resolves but even with 8.8.4.4 in my forwarders list it will not resolve when i run nslookup on my local DNS server.
