    I would like to learn how to write a software product definition. Therefore I am looking for online materials or books, which would help me to learn more about this topic. I would like to learn: what must be in what must not to be in how to make a product definition to sell internally the product finding balance between use case descriptions (the why), and feature descriptions (the how). ... I am aware that it is not something that can learn in 15 minutes but I think such a discussion could help me to have a good start.

  • Accessing a Web Service: Learning Resource needed

    I have been searching for resources to learn (Java) Web Services. Although I have found a lot of resources and tutorials on JWS, I am confused with the version numbers, the abbreviations and Metro. Plus the last update to Metro was in 2008. Is it a worthwile thing to learn? I wanted to learn how to access Web Services, since an upcoming project is about accessing one. I have some experience with OAuth on Twitter(using code available). Things I know about the project: I have to access a Web Service. Java is the preferred platform to use(Although I know I can use any). Axis can be used to access the Web Service(I have never used Axis) I have a meeting scheduled to learn more, but I sure don't want to look silly since I am no Java expert, have never created or accessed Web Services using Java. My Questions: 1.Can someone point me to a tutorial which will help me learn how to access a already running Web Service (Preferably SOAP(?), not REST. It's XML based) 2. Will you recommend using PHP or Python to do the work of accessing the web service? I am expecting a lot of nay saying, but I hope I get some answers too. I will clarify things if needed.

    I make my living as a consultant and a general technologist.  I credit my success to the fact that I have never been afraid to pick up any product, language or platform needed to get the job done.  While Microsoft technologies I my mainstay, I have done work on mainframe and UNIX platforms and have worked with a wide variety of database engines.  Each one has it’s use and most times it is less expensive to find a way to communicate with an existing system than to replace it. So what are the main benefits of expending the effort to learn a new technology? New ways to solve problems Accelerate development Advise clients and get new business opportunities By new technology I mean ones that you haven’t had experience with before.  They don’t have to be the the one that just came out yesterday.  As they say, those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it.  If you can learn something from an older technology it can be just as valuable as the shiny new one.  Either way, when you add another tool to your kit you get a new view on each problem you face.  This makes it easier to create a sound solution. The next thing you can learn from working with different products and techniques is how to more efficiently develop solve problems.  Many times if you are working with a new language you will find that there are specific design patterns that are used with it in normal use.  These can usually be applied with most languages.  You just needed to be exposed to them. The last point is about helping your clients and helping yourself.  If you can get in on technologies early you will have advantage over your competition in the market.  You will also be able to honestly advise you client on why they should or should not go with a new product.  Being able to compare products and their features is always an ability that stake holders appreciate.   • can I achieve my dreams without a degree? [closed]

    It's really giving me a lot stress as my parents saying me to join college but I don't want. I know I can learn all programming by self studying but they keep saying join college otherwise no one will give you job. I always think positive but sometimes I also start thinking like them (what if my life will be spoiled if I do not go to college) There are so much things on internet. I can learn c++, objective c, java, AI, html, php all through internet (at least I think that I can learn whole by self studying and I can give 10 hour/day easily for studying) and I will keep practicing and become a good programmer in 2 years and then try to do some job for experience so no need to waste 4 years just for studying things which I can learn in 2 years and no need to waste money on college because they teach physics, chemistry all in first 2 years and I only want to study comp. Science. But now again I am thinking negative that what will happen if I do not get degree and what will I do after learning programming if I don't get job? Please suggest what should I do? Should I join college? or self study? Can I achieve my dreams without a degree if I study hard and learn many things? I have full confidence that I can self teach myself better than they will teach in college. I will open my app company and many more. But maybe I am over confident because I don't know what happens in real world. How they treat a person without degree, etc. Anyone of you had gone through this condition? What did you do?

  • Is C++ really a bad language for beginners? [duplicate]

    This question already has an answer here: Is C++ suitable as a first language? 24 answers I'm learning C++ right now, and it's the first language I'm learning. I keep seeing on stackexchange and other forums (Reddit, etc.) that I should drop C++ and learn a higher level language like Python or Java. The only arguments I see are that "C++ is harder to learn and is more low-level than others." which don't really give a reason NOT to learn it. I want to know if there are any actual reasons for dropping C++ and taking up another, "easier" language. Or if I should keep focusing on it, and just learn others later (which is what I plan on doing).

  • Problem with understanding how to start

    Okay, this might be a little off-topic but i try anyway. Sorry to bother. So i'm working as sysadmin for at least 5 years now and i quite enjoy IT field in general. Somehow i was never interested in programming much but always want to learn something at least easy and for personal usage. As sysadmin i need scripting skills so learn shell scripting without much problems, i also try to learn pascal, delphi, basic over time and must recent was python. Well, my problem is when i try to learn programming i just can't apply what i learn from the books to the real word. What i mean is i understand there are data structures, algorithms, variables, lib's, if-then logic, etc. but i just can't understand how to apply this things when i want to do real things. Like i want to get a something simple as parse web page, i draw a quick algorithm like get a web page, find a word on it and write a to file, on the paper everything look simple but when i get to the coding i just stuck pretty much from the start. I try read code of the real programs that just totally confusing especially big parts with many classes so i'm just quickly lost a trail what this code do. I think i just lack some fundamentals to see a big picture but don't really know what this might be? Or maybe i just don't have a passion to programming at all... My best bet was a shell scripting so i have really no problems to write complex scripts but this just not enough. Recently i was read around 5 or 6 python books because everyone say it's so easy even kid can code something but still no much luck, python is good and easy but i can't make something harder then a prodecurial style code like in bash for easy things but when i want harder things i'm still stuck. In college i was also not a math and tech guy and like to study non-tech stuff mostly like economy, psychology maybe that my problem? Anyway any advice would be greatly appriciated.

  • getting a job in game industry as a developer, just knowing a game engine

    I recently enrolled at a community college for game developement. But I am skeptical about the circulum. I have no experience in the gaming industry so I wouldnt be able to tell rather its a good investment or not. So I am asking you. I dont want to get too much into detail of all the classes I am taking so I will try to be brief. By the time I graduate, I should have a understanding of how a game engine works. I will be working with the unreal engine to develop a Multiplayer game from scratch. So in the process of my final project, I will learn how to work within the unreal engine, Learn python and learn how to use it's API to connect to a remote server and build game mechanics. Overall I will also recieve a associates degree in game development. I learn c++ but not c. The director said he was trying to implement c in the program as well. What I notice is I will not learn how to build a 3d game engine from scratch. They do not teach any AI. I will not learn how to work with the graphics card using a graphic's api such as DirectX or OpenGL. I know building a game engine from scratch is a little complex, but at the same time the track is requireing me to take some advances math courses such a calculus and geotomtry 1 and 2. I also got to take a physic class. I just think thats a little much for just learning how to use the unreal engine but not actually build one or try to learn the anatomy of a game engine. Is this good enough to possibly land my a job in the insdustry. If I left anything out or was not detail, please feel free to ask more questions. Thanks Guys!!

  • What's the next steps for moving from appengine to full django?

    Hey guys, I'm super new to programming and I've been using appengine to help me learn python and general coding. I'm getting better quickly and I'm loving it all the way :) Appengine was awesome for allowing me to just dive into writing my app and getting something live that works (see http://www.7bks.com/). But I'm realising that the longer I continue to learn on appengine the more I'm constraining myself and locking myself into a single system. I'd like to move to developing on full django (since django looks super cool!). What are my next steps? To give you a feel for my level of knowledge: I'm not a unix user I'm not familiar with command line controls (I still use appengine/python completely via the appengine SDK) I've never programmed in anything other than python, anywhere other than appengine I know the word SQL, but don't know what MySQL is really or how to use it. So, specifically: What are the skills I need to learn to get up and running with full django/python? If I'm going to host somewhere else I suppose I'll need to learn some sysadmin type skills (maybe even unix?). Is there anywhere that offers easy hosting (like appengine) but that supports django? I hear such great things about heroku I'm considering switching to RoR and going there I appreciate that I'm likely not quite ready to move away from appengine just yet but I'm a fiercely passionate learner (http://www.7bks.com/blog/179001) and would love it if I knew all the steps I needed to learn so I could set about learning them. At the moment, I don't even know what the steps are I need to learn! Thank you very much. Sorry this isn't a specific programming question but I've looked around and haven't found a good how-to for someone of my level of experience and I think others would appreciate a good roadmap for the things we need to learn to get up and running.   • Where do I learn about IP blocks and subnets? Or is there just a calculator that does it all for me?

    Amazon's elastic compute tool (among others) requires the ip block format for their command: ec2-authorize websrv -P tcp -p 80 -s 205.192.0.0/16 I may be doing this wrong, but as far as I can tell I need to use the block format even for a single IP address. 1) So, how would I do that for this IP? 71.75.232.132 Several years ago I took a CCNA class, and I remember going over IPs and subnets, masks, broadcast addresses, class a/b/c networks, etc. However a lot seems to have changed since then - for example I don't think you can tell what "class" a network is in just by looking at it anymore - sometimes they could be multiple classes. 2) Anyhow, my second question is where do I go to get a refresher on all these things? 3) Or should I just be using ipcalc or an online calculator to do it all for me - and if so, which one?
