  • Rail's FileStore with Linux Disk Caching or RAMdisk?

    I have a Ruby on Rails application that stores it's catched files on the filesystem (Rails file-system cache). I was thinking about changing to memcached Store, but a short test shows it isn't a big difference in speed. From linuxatemyram.com I learned a bit about file caching. On the current machine there would be around 40..45GB RAM left which isn't needed for the application and which can be used to linux-disk-cache this rails file cache store. The disk is a RAID10 system with almost 120MB disk perfomance. How can I tell Linux to use free RAM more deliberately and not to be shy about using it? Do think it's necessary to adjust a sysyctl/.. value here, or would I have performance advantages to put the File Store root diretory on a ramdisk? (Loosing the cache during a reboot wouldn't be a problem)

  • Varnish with multiple sites/boxes

    Is it possible for Varnish to redirect traffic to different IPs based on the url? For example, is the following setup feasible (and if so, what would the VCL look like): *.example.com points to Varnish IP address When a request is made to foo.example.com, varnish checks the cache and sends the request to Server1's IP address on a cache miss. When a request is made to bar.example.com, varnish checks the cache and sends the request to Server2's IP address on a cache miss. foo and bar are (for the most part) completely unrelated sites. They use the engine, but have different content and their own distinct database. Since there previously was no penalty for doing so (other than cost) we split them up into two separate boxes so that a ton of traffic to foo won't have a negative impact on visitors browsing around bar. I could set up two instances of varnish and have one serve up foo's static content and the other serve up bar's, but as there doesn't seem to be much overhead to running Varnish, I think (perhaps mistakenly) that it would make more sense to go with one Varnish server that redirects the traffic to the appropriate box on a cache miss.

  • HTTP Caching Server that supports POST

    I am hosting a REST service which is sending appropriate cache-control headers. I use Varnish as a caching server in front of my webserver. However, a limitation of varnish is that it doesn't support caching HTTP POST and HTTP PUT. Is there any alternate caching server that will be able to cache these requests? I understand that caching POST is a bit tricky because you cannot just cache based on the url as a key like for GET; it needs to actually inspect the request body. In case of multipart/form-data requests, there should probably be a limit on the size of the request body for it to be cached (so that big file uploads, etc won't be cached). Nevertheless I really want to be able to cache short HTTP POST, or at least the application/x-www-form-urlencoded ones.

  • The speed of copying a file from a PC to a USB Flash drive started at 30MB/s and decreased to 5.8 MB

    If I copy a 8GB file from the PC to a USB Flash Drive, the speed will start at around 30 MB/s... maybe 28 MB/s, and then gradually, after a minute, it will go down to 15 MB/s and finally settle down at 5.8 MB/s. But I thought if it is a hard drive, then probably there is the RAM cache and also the internal hard drive cache, and will make the copying of file from PC to hard drive appear fast at first. But for a USB Flash drive, there should be no internal cache for the USB Flash drive itself. Is there a RAM cache for it, so that's why the initial copying seems so fast?

  • Career guidance/advice for Junior-level Software Engineer [closed]

    I have quite a few questions on my mind, so please bare with me. Please don't feel obligated to answer all of them, any as you choose will do. I'd appreciate if you could share some insight on any of these. Before I begin, some context: I currently have almost two years of professional experience as a Software Engineer, mainly developing software in Java. At this point, I feel that I have reached the peak in my career growth at the current company I am at and therefore I am looking for a new job, ideally again, as a Software Engineer. I have been interviewing for the past few months casually but have not had luck with companies I have a passion for. So, in no particular order - 1) In general, what are your thoughts on having graduate degrees in CS / Software Engineering. How much does it influence a salary increase, and do you think it's beneficial when working on real-world problems? I get the sense that a graduate degree in the field is trivial unless you really have a passion for research. 2) In general, in professional practice, how often had you have to write your own data structures and "complex" algorithms from scratch? In my own work, I have found myself relying mainly on third-party frameworks and the Java standard library to implement solutions as per business requirements. What are your thoughts on this? 3) In terms of resume, I feel the most ambivalent here. I want to be able to "blemish" my resume to a certain extent so that it stands out from others', but at the same time I do not want to over-exagerate my abilities. How do you strike a balance here? For example: I say that I am proficient in Java with data structures and algorithms. This is obviously a subjective and relative statement. I've taken the classes in my undergrad, and I've applied it in my work experience. What I feel as "prociency" can be seen as junior-level to others. How do you know what to say? Most of the time, recruiters (with no technical background) will be looking for keywords that stand out. This leads me to my next question (4). 4) Just from interviewing for the past few months (and getting plenty of rejections), I've come to realize that I may not be as proficient in data structures and algorithms as I thought I was. Do you think it's a good idea to remove the "proficient in java/data structure and algorithms"? I feel that being too hoenst on the resume will impede me from scoring opportunities to even have an interview with top-notch companies. What are your thoughts? 5) What is the absolute "must-have" knowledge going into a technical interview? I've been practicing several algorithmic and data sturcture problems now, and I feel that my abilities to solve arbitrary problems efficiently has not gotten significantly better. Do you think these abilities are something innate - it's either you have in you, or you don't? How can you teach yourself to learn, if you will? 6) How easy is it to go from industry/function to the next? I work mainly with backend technologies and I'm now interested in working with the frontend, i.e javascript,jquery,php or even mobile development. In your own experience, how did you not get pidgeon holed in your career? I feel that the choices you make now ultimately decide your future. As cliche as it sounds, I think it may be true. Here's what I mean: you've worked mainly as a backend engineer, people are interested in you doing the same thing since you've already accumulated experience in that function. How do get experience in a new function if people won't accept you because you don't already have it? It's a catch 22, you see... Are side projects the only real way to help you move from one function to another that you're truly interested in? For example: I could start writing my own mobile applications, even though I've worked mainly on the backend. Thanks so much for the long read.   • Defaulting the HLSL Vertex and Pixel Shader Levels to Feature Level 9_1 in VS 2012

    I love Visual Studio 2012. But this is not a post about that. This is a post about tweaking one particular parameter that I’ve found a bit annoying. Disclaimer: You will be modifying important MSBuild files. If you screw up you will break your build tools. And maybe your computer will catch fire. I’m not responsible. No warranties or guaranties of any sort. This info is provided “as is”. By default, if you add a new vertex shader or pixel shader item to a project, it will be set to build with shader profile 4.0_level_9_3. If you need 9_3 functionality, this is all well and good. But (especially for Windows Store apps) you really want to target the lowest shader profile possible so that your game will run on as many computers as possible. So it’s a good idea to default to 9_1. To do this you could add in new HLSL files via “Add->New Item->Visual C++->HLSL->______ Shader File (.hlsl)” and then edit the shader files’ properties to set them manually to use 9_1 via “Properties->HLSL Compiler->General->Shader Model”. This is fine unless you forget to do this once and then submit your game with 9_3 shaders instead of 9_1 shaders to the Windows Store or to some other game store. Then you’d wind up with either rejection or angry “this doesn’t work on my computer! ripoff!” messages. There’s another option though. In “Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplates\VC\HLSL\1033\VertexShader” (note the path might vary slightly for you if you are using a 32-bit system or have a non-ENU version of Visual Studio 2012) you will find a “VertexShader.vstemplate” file. If you open this file in a text editor (e.g. Notepad++), then inside the CustomParameters tag within the TemplateContent tag you should see a CustomParameter tag for the ShaderType, i.e.: <CustomParameter Name="$ShaderType$" Value="Vertex"/> On a new line, we are going to add another CustomParameter tag to the CustomParameters tag. It will look like this: <CustomParameter Name="$ShaderModel$" Value="4.0_level_9_1"/> such that we now have:     <CustomParameters>       <CustomParameter Name="$ShaderType$" Value="Vertex"/>       <CustomParameter Name="$ShaderModel$" Value="4.0_level_9_1"/>     </CustomParameters> You can then save the file (you will need to be an Administrator or have Administrator access). Back in the 1033 directory (or whatever the number is for your language), go into the “PixelShader” directory. Edit the “PixelShader.vstemplate” file and make the same change (note that this time $ShaderType$ is “Pixel” not “Vertex”; you shouldn’t be changing that line anyway, but if you were to just copy and replace the above four lines then you will wind up creating pixel shaders that the HLSL compiler would try to compile as vertex shaders, with all sort of weird errors as a result). Once you’ve added the $ShaderModel$ line to “PixelShader.vstemplate” and have saved it, everything should be done. Since Feature Level 9_1 and 9_3 don’t support any of the other shader types, those are set to default to their appropriate minimums already (Compute and Geometry are set to “4.0” and Domain and Hull are set to “5.0”, which are their respective minimums (though not all 4.0 cards support Compute shaders; they were an optional feature added with DirectX 10.1 and only became required for DirectX 11 hardware). In case you are wondering where these magic values come from, you can find them all in the “fxc.xml” file in the “\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft.CPP\v4.0\V110\1033” directory (or whatever your language number is; 1033 is ENU and various other product languages have their own respective numbers (see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/goglobal/bb964664.aspx ) such that Japanese is 1041 (for example), though for all I know MSBuild tasks might be 1033 for everyone). If, like me, you installed VS 2012 to a drive other than the C:\ drive, you will find the vstemplate files in the drive to which you installed VS 2012 (D:\ in my case) but you will find the fxc.xml file on the C:\ drive. You should not edit fxc.xml. You will almost definitely break things by doing that; it’s just something you can look through to see all the other options that the FXC task takes such that you could, if needed, add further CustomParameter tags if you wanted to default to other supported options. I haven’t tried any others though so I don’t have any advice on how to set them.

    Env: Seam 2.2, ehcache-core 2.1.0 I tried injecting the CacheProvider using the following call in my bean scoped for session @In CacheProvider cacheProvider; WEB-INF\components.xml contains the following line to enable the cache provider <cache:eh-cache-provider/> The above configuration seems to return a null value for the cache provider Using the cache provider like this CacheProvider cacheProvider = CacheProvider.instance(); throws the following warning 15:29:27,586 WARN [CacheManager] Creating a new instance of CacheManager using the diskStorePath "C:\DOCUME~1\user5\LOCALS~1\Temp\" which is already used by an existing CacheManager. The source of the configuration was net.sf.ehcache.config.generator.Configuratio nSource$DefaultConfigurationSource@15ed0f9. The diskStore path for this CacheManager will be set to C:\DOCUME~1\user5\LOCALS ~1\Temp\\ehcache_auto_created_1276682367586.     Suppose I have the following Domain class mapping to a legacy table, utilizing read-only second-level cache, and having a transient field: class DomainObject { static def transients = ['userId'] Long id Long userId static mapping = { cache usage: 'read-only' table 'SOME_TABLE' } } I have a problem, references to DomainObject are being shared due to first-level caching, and thus transient fields are writing over each other. For example, def r1 = DomainObject.get(1) r1.userId = 22 def r2 = DomainObject.get(1) r2.userId = 34 assert r1.userId == 34 That is, r1 and r2 are references to the same instance. This is undesirable, I would like to cache the table data without sharing references. Any ideas? [Edit] Understanding the situation better now, I believe my question boils down to the following: Is there anyway to disable first level cache for a specific domain class while still using second level cache?

I can do this manually by opening the start menu from the secondary monitor and by default next time I open the start menu it will open on the second monitor. Is there an option where I can force it to stay on the secondary display. If I restart or accidently open start from the primary monitor it changes the default start menu display monitor to my primary monitor.

    Would It be possible to connec my xbox 360 to a second AirPort Extreme, wherein this AirPort Extreme is wirelessly linked to the first? I assume it is and is straight forward, but I thought I'd ask first. Also, would an Ethernet to a second AirPort Extreme be any faster than, say, a dual band wifi connection from a MacBook? Obviously environmental factors play in, but I'm mostly curious about the relative receiving strength of the airport vs laptop.

  • WinPE, Startnet.CMD and passing variables to second batch file not working

    I don't know scripting or PowerShell (yes I need to learn something). I'm not an expert batch file maker either. I have a WinPE flash drive which I used to deploy OS images. I have the WIM, drivers and anything needed else outside the WinPE environment to ensure that Updates, changes are easier for me to make. I use the "STARTNET.CMD" batch file which is part of the WinPE. The reason to go through the letter drives is that the WinPE always gets the X letter drive assigned. The flash drive itself can receive a random letter which always changes. My deployment menu is located on the flash drive it self and not inside the WinPE. This is so that if I need to make a change I don't have to re-do the WinPE. I am able to locate the "menu.bat" batch file and launch it. I use a variable to capture the letter drive. I call the second batch file named "menu.bat" and pass the variable to it. When the second batch file loads, I believe that I am calling the variable correctly. If I break out of the batch file I can echo the variable and see the expected reply. The issue is that I can't use the variable to work with anything on the second batch file. In my test, I can get this to work over and over. When it runs from the real USB flash drive it does not work. I removed comments from the second batch file to make it smaller. My issue is that files below all get a message stating that the system cannot find the path specified.   • Passing a ManagedObjectContext to a second view

    I'm writing my first iPhone/Cocoa app. It has two table views inside a navigation view. When you touch a row in the first table view, you are taken to the second table view. I would like the second view to display records from the CoreData entities related to the row you touched in the first view. I have the CoreData data showing up fine in the first table view. You can touch a row and go to the second table view. I'm able to pass info from the selected object from the first to the second view. But I cannot get the second view to do its own CoreData fetching. For the life of me I cannot get the managedObjectContext object to pass to the second view controller. I don't want to do the lookups in the first view and pass a dictionary because I want to be able to use a search field to refine results in the second view, as well as insert new entries to the CoreData data from there. I just want to cache the blog pages so it doesn't hit heroku every time which is horribly slow. Thanks

As su, removing /data/data/com.opera.browser/opera/profiles/smartphone/cookies4.dat /data/data/com.opera.browser/opera/profiles/smartphone/cache /data/data/com.opera.browser/opera/profiles/smartphone/cacheO and a /system/xbin/busybox killall -9 com.opera.browser afterwards doesn't seem to do the job. Afterwards, bookmarks etc. are still there. In Opera Mini I found it easy to just delete /data/data/com.opera.mini.android/cache/webviewCache /data/data/com.opera.mini.android/databases but unfortunately, Opera Mini in it's current version has a bug and doesn't work on most devices.
