  • Can I load lots of data only once and use it on each request?

    - by eikes
    Is there a way to load a big data object into the memory, which usually has to be loaded at each request, only once? In Java you can instantiate an object in a servlet when this servlet is loaded, but once it's there you can use it in any request. Example is below. Can this be done in PHP? public class SampleServlet extends HttpServlet { private static HugeGraphObject hgo; public void init() { hgo = HugeGraphObjectFactory.get(); } protected void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException { String param = request.getParameter("q"); response.getWriter().write(hgo.getSomeThing(param)); } }

  • Unable to recieve file contents on server during upload

    - by Khushal
Hello, I have a JSP page in which I have a file input field from which I browse a csv file and then upload it on server. I am using method = "POST" and ENCTYPE='multipart/form-data' in the form in which this file input field is present. On the servlet side(in the application's servlet) I am making use of apache's commom file upload API-ServletFileUpload API. After getting the FileItem list from the method parseRequest(request) of this API I am unable to get the file name and its content by using the methods getName(), getString() of FileItem API. Needed to know what am I doing wrong or any modifications in my approach that will make my application to work. Any pointers regarding this will be helpful. Thanks in advance!!

  • nikto probe warning messages

    - by julio
Hi-- I have a pretty standard VPS running Ubuntu 8.1, Apache 2.2, PHP 5 etc. -- standard Lamp stack. I am using suhosin and have tried my best to plug the obvious stuff, since I'm the only user-- there's no SSH access except via pubkey on a non-standard port, there's no root access by SSH, no FTP server running, iptables is set to discard anything outside of basically port 80 or my SSH port (there's no mail server or anything else). However, I've still been compromised (not badly as far as I can tell) probably by a SQL injection. I've locked down the SQL user (there's only one outside of root, and he's got limited priv, no file etc.) So I ran nikto to see what I'm doing wrong, and there's a list of things I've never seen, and can't find using "find" or any other method I'm aware of. • What are the design decisions involved in choosing how to expose a Java web application?

    - by Gary Rowe
There are many ways to expose a Java web application to the consumer: application container (JBoss etc), servlet container (Tomcat etc), OSGi (Knopflerfish etc), self-executable WAR (Winstone etc) and so on. Are there any clear considerations where one approach should be favoured over another? As an example, could a collection of self-executable WARs running as raw Unix processes outperform the same applications deployed within Tomcat taking into account administration and scalability concerns?

  • The C++ web stack, is there one?

    - by NimChimpsky
Java would be jsps and servlets (or a framework such as Spring) running on the JVM and tomcat (or glassfish etc). C# would be asp and C# running on dot.net framework and IIS ? (I have no experience with this please correct and improve my terminology) Is there an equivalent for C++ ? I could happily call some C++ from a java servlet/controller but was wondering if there are existing frameworks and libraries out there specifically for creating business logic in C++ with a web front end.

  • Installed Sun Java 6 - configuration problem when running as sudo

    - by HorusKol
I have install Sun Java 6 on an Ubuntu server and set an environment variable in the default profile as per the instructions at http://www.edugate.ie/workshop-guides/shibboleth-2-identity-provider-installation-linux-debian-or-ubuntu I then try to run an installer for a Java servlet - but when I run it as myself, it cannot create the required directory in /opt. When I run it as sudo, I am told that JAVA_HOME is not correct and it doesn't even start the installer - shouldn't this be coming from /etc/profile like it is for my normal user?

  • Custom Java Web Development vs Spreadsheet

    - by jacktrades
Need some arguments why a small business should prefer a custom web developed solution using relational database (e.g. Java Servlet + MySQL) over standard Spreadsheet user programs like Excel. Specially now in these days that Office 365 is available in the cloud. As a Java programmer need good arguments to convince clients that this approach is better (if it really is) This is a generic situation, I understand that each case is different. Nevertheless answers so far has pinpointed right answers.

In this tutorial, you will create a Java EE 6 Web Application and add the following components to it - a Stateless Session Bean with two asynchronous methods. You define a Servlet to call the asynchronous methods and to keep track of the invocation and completion times to demonstrate the asynchronous nature of the method calls. The index.jsp will contain a form with a submit button, Run allowing you to execute the application. The form will submit to the Servlet which invokes the asynchronous methods defined in the session bean and the response is re-directed to response.jsp. Information about the asynchronous handling procedure is displayed to users. From this information, users will notice that the invoker thread and the called asynchronous thread are working concurrently. Check out this new OBE on the Oracle Learning Library: Creating Asynchronous Methods in EJB 3.1. This OBE is part of the new EJB 3.1 New Features Series. • Java EE 7 Survey Results!

    - by reza_rahman
On November 8th, the Java EE EG posted a survey to gather broad community feedback on a number of critical open issues. For reference, you can find the original survey here. We kept the survey open for about three weeks until November 30th. To our delight, over 1100 developers took time out of their busy lives to let their voices be heard! The results of the survey were sent to the EG on December 12th. The subsequent EG discussion is available here. The exact summary sent to the EG is available here. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one the individuals who took the survey. It is very appreciated, encouraging and worth it's weight in gold. In particular, I tried to capture just some of the high-quality, intelligent, thoughtful and professional comments in the summary to the EG. I highly encourage you to continue to stay involved, perhaps through the Adopt-a-JSR program. We would also like to sincerely thank java.net, JavaLobby, TSS and InfoQ for helping spread the word about the survey. Below is a brief summary of the results... APIs to Add to Java EE 7 Full/Web Profile The first question asked which of the four new candidate APIs (WebSocket, JSON-P, JBatch and JCache) should be added to the Java EE 7 Full and Web profile respectively. As the following graph shows, there was significant support for adding all the new APIs to the full profile: Support is relatively the weakest for Batch 1.0, but still good. A lot of folks saw WebSocket 1.0 as a critical technology with comments such as this one: "A modern web application needs Web Sockets as first class citizens" While it is clearly seen as being important, a number of commenters expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of a higher-level JSON data binding API as illustrated by this comment: "How come we don't have a Data Binding API for JSON" JCache was also seen as being very important as expressed with comments like: "JCache should really be that foundational technology on which other specs have no fear to depend on" The results for the Web Profile is not surprising. While there is strong support for adding WebSocket 1.0 and JSON-P 1.0 to the Web Profile, support for adding JCache 1.0 and Batch 1.0 is relatively weak. There was actually significant opposition to adding Batch 1. 0 (with 51.8% casting a 'No' vote). Enabling CDI by Default The second question asked was whether CDI should be enabled in Java EE environments by default. A significant majority of 73.3% developers supported enabling CDI, only 13.8% opposed. Comments such as these two reflect a strong general support for CDI as well as a desire for better Java EE alignment with CDI: "CDI makes Java EE quite valuable!" "Would prefer to unify EJB, CDI and JSF lifecycles" There is, however, a palpable concern around the performance impact of enabling CDI by default as exemplified by this comment: "Java EE projects in most cases use CDI, hence it is sensible to enable CDI by default when creating a Java EE application. However, there are several issues if CDI is enabled by default: scanning can be slow - not all libs use CDI (hence, scanning is not needed)" Another significant concern appears to be around backwards compatibility and conflict with other JSR 330 implementations like Spring: "I am leaning towards yes, however can easily imagine situations where errors would be caused by automatically activating CDI, especially in cases of backward compatibility where another DI engine (such as Spring and the like) happens to use the same mechanics to inject dependencies and in that case there would be an overlap in injections and probably an uncertain outcome" Some commenters such as this one attempt to suggest solutions to these potential issues: "If you have Spring in use and use javax.inject.Inject then you might get some unexpected behavior that could be equally confusing. I guess there will be a way to switch CDI off. I'm tempted to say yes but am cautious for this reason" Consistent Usage of @Inject The third question was around using CDI/JSR 330 @Inject consistently vs. allowing JSRs to create their own injection annotations. A slight majority of 53.3% developers supported using @Inject consistently across JSRs. 28.8% said using custom injection annotations is OK, while 18.0% were not sure. The vast majority of commenters were strongly supportive of CDI and general Java EE alignment with CDI as illistrated by these comments: "Dependency Injection should be standard from now on in EE. It should use CDI as that is the DI mechanism in EE and is quite powerful. Having a new JSR specific DI mechanism to deal with just means more reflection, more proxies. JSRs should also be constructed to allow some of their objects Injectable. @Inject @TransactionalCache or @Inject @JMXBean etc...they should define the annotations and stereotypes to make their code less procedural. Dog food it. If there is a shortcoming in CDI for a JSR fix it and we will all be grateful" "We're trying to make this a comprehensive platform, right? Injection should be a fundamental part of the platform; everything else should build on the same common infrastructure. Each-having-their-own is just a recipe for chaos and having to learn the same thing 10 different ways" Expanding the Use of @Stereotype The fourth question was about expanding CDI @Stereotype to cover annotations across Java EE beyond just CDI. A significant majority of 62.3% developers supported expanding the use of @Stereotype, only 13.3% opposed. A majority of commenters supported the idea as well as the theme of general CDI/Java EE alignment as expressed in these examples: "Just like defining new types for (compositions of) existing classes, stereotypes can help make software development easier" "This is especially important if many EJB services are decoupled from the EJB component model and can be applied via individual annotations to Java EE components. @Stateless is a nicely compact annotation. Code will not improve if that will have to be applied in the future as @Transactional, @Pooled, @Secured, @Singlethreaded, @...." Some, however, expressed concerns around increased complexity such as this commenter: "Could be very convenient, but I'm afraid if it wouldn't make some important class annotations less visible" Expanding Interceptor Use The final set of questions was about expanding interceptors further across Java EE... A very solid 96.3% of developers wanted to expand interceptor use to all Java EE components. 35.7% even wanted to expand interceptors to other Java EE managed classes. Most developers (54.9%) were not sure if there is any place that injection is supported that should not support interceptors. 32.8% thought any place that supports injection should also support interceptors. Only 12.2% were certain that there are places where injection should be supported but not interceptors. The comments reflected the diversity of opinions, generally supportive of interceptors: "I think interceptors are as fundamental as injection and should be available anywhere in the platform" "The whole usage of interceptors still needs to take hold in Java programming, but it is a powerful technology that needs some time in the Sun. Basically it should become part of Java SE, maybe the next step after lambas?" A distinct chain of thought separated interceptors from filters and listeners: "I think that the Servlet API already provides a rich set of possibilities to hook yourself into different Servlet container events. I don't find a need to 'pollute' the Servlet model with the Interceptors API"

  • Where should I start and how to progress when learning Java EE

    - by danizmax
I know basic stuff like, what are beans, jsp, servlet, jsf and how this stuff should work together. I know how to make basic jsp page with database query for example. Now I need to know what is the best path to learn all this stuff. My plan is to learn in this order: jsp (including persistance and JSTL) servlets + beans jsf The jump to frameworks (hibernate, struts, spring, etc) Also I'm not exactly sure about JSF, is it a must to make great pages or is it just a convenience to know?

  • Migrating to CF9: trouble getting JRun working with SSL

    - by DaveBurns
I have a client on MX7 who wants to migrate to CF9. I have a dev environment for them on my WinXP machine where I've configured MX7 to run with JRun's built-in web server. I've had that working for a long time with both regular and SSL connections. I installed CF9 yesterday side-by-side with the existing MX7 install to start testing. The install was smooth and detected MX7, adjusted CF9's port numbers for no conflict, etc. Testing started well: MX7 over regular and SSL still worked and CF9 worked over regular HTTP. But I can't get CF9 to work with SSL. I installed a new certificate with keytool, FireFox (v3.6) complained about it being unsigned, I added it to the exception list, and now I get this: Secure Connection Failed An error occurred during a connection to localhost:9101. Peer reports it experienced an internal error. (Error code: ssl_error_internal_error_alert) I've been Googling that in all variations but can't find much help to get past this. I don't see any info in any log files either. FWIW, here's my SSL config from SERVER-INF/jrun.xml: <service class="jrun.servlet.http.SSLService" name="SSLService"> <attribute name="enabled">true</attribute>` <attribute name="interface">*</attribute> <attribute name="port">9101</attribute> <attribute name="keyStore">{jrun.rootdir}/lib/mykey</attribute> <attribute name="keyStorePassword">*deleted*</attribute> <attribute name="trustStore">{jrun.rootdir}/lib/trustStore</attribute> <attribute name="socketFactoryName">jrun.servlet.http.JRunSSLServerSocketFactory</attribute> <attribute name="deactivated">false</attribute> <attribute name="bindAddress">*</attribute> <attribute name="clientAuth">false</attribute> </service> Anyone here know of any issues re setting up SSL and CF9? But I want real server IP and my site has multiple domains, so when request is coming from some domain name to my server, it must available in Jetty request too. nginx config: server { listen 80; ## listen for ipv4 listen [::]:80 default ipv6only=on; ## listen for ipv6 server_name localhost; access_log /var/log/nginx/localhost.access.log; location / { proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; } } Servlet request: Dump Servlet getMethod: GET getContentLength: -1 getContentType: null getRequestURI: /dump/info getRequestURL: http://127.0.0.1:8080/dump/info getContextPath: getServletPath: /dump getPathInfo: /info getPathTranslated: /tmp/jetty-0.0.0.0-8080-test.war-_-any-/webapp/info getQueryString: null getProtocol: HTTP/1.0 getScheme: http getServerName: 127.0.0.1 getServerPort: 8080 getLocalName: 127.0.0.1 getLocalAddr: 127.0.0.1 getLocalPort: 8080 getRemoteUser: null getUserPrincipal: null getRemoteAddr: 127.0.0.1 getRemoteHost: 127.0.0.1 getRemotePort: 50905 getRequestedSessionId: 6ubs42zhm5q61k5hm84ni3ib isSecure(): false isUserInRole(admin): false getLocale: en_US getLocales: en_US getLocales: en

Anyone had success with it? Dave

  • Enabling JMX for proxool with tomcat

    - by dialt0ne
I am trying to get proxool's MBeans available so that I can see/manipulate them with jconsole. I have jconsole working, but I don't see anything related to proxool. The system is using Sun Java 1.5.0_17 (I know, I know... I'm working with the developers to upgrade). JMX is enabled by modifying $JAVA_OPTS in my tomcat 5.5 startup script: SJO="$SJO -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote" SJO="$SJO -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=4998" SJO="$SJO -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.authenticate=false" SJO="$SJO -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false" JAVA_OPTS="$JAVA_OPTS $SJO" I have proxool configured with JNDI in server.xml: <GlobalNamingResources> <Resource name="jdbc/database" auth="Container" type="javax.sql.DataSource" factory="org.logicalcobwebs.proxool.ProxoolDataSource" user="username" password="password" proxool.driver-url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@fqdn.example.com:1521:MYSID" proxool.driver-class="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver" proxool.alias="mysid" proxool.maximum-connection-count="20" proxool.statistics="20s,5m,15m" proxool.statistics-log-level="INFO" proxool.jmx="true" proxool.verbose="true" /> </GlobalNamingResources> My test .jsp can run queries and I can see it using the connections with the proxool admin servlet, but I'm unsure if there's more I need to configure in tomcat or proxool to get JMX functioning. • does red5 read tomcat-users.xml

    - by baba
Hi, I have been busy creating an app for Red5. Imagine what was my surprise when I tried to configure basic/digest authentication and I couldn't. What struck me as strange is that I have a running tomcat instance that works and authenticates correctly with the following xmls: web.xml (part of) <security-constraint> <web-resource-collection> <web-resource-name>A Protected Page</web-resource-name> <url-pattern>/stats.jsp</url-pattern> </web-resource-collection> <auth-constraint> <description/> <role-name>tomcat</role-name> </auth-constraint> </security-constraint> <login-config> <auth-method>DIGEST</auth-method> <realm-name>BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA</realm-name> </login-config> <security-role> <description/> <role-name>tomcat</role-name> </security-role> and a tomcat-users.xml in /conf that looks kinda like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <tomcat-users> <role rolename="tomcat"/> <user username="ide" password="bogus" roles="tomcat"/> </tomcat-users> The annoying thing is that configuration authenticates correctly when on tomcat's servlet container, but on the red5's modified one, it just keeps asking for authentication. Am I becoming mad or it should work like a charm? Red5 is version 0_9_1 The stats.jsp is accessible in both servlet containers, the only difference is that when you input the correct password and username in tomcat, you are logged in, and in red5 you are not, it just keeps asking you for the password. Any pointers? Am I missing something? Here is a stack trace of the error I receive AT the moment I try the login: Caused by: java.io.IOException: Unable to locate a login configuration at com.sun.security.auth.login.ConfigFile.init(ConfigFile.java:250) [na:1.6.0_22] at com.sun.security.auth.login.ConfigFile.<init>(ConfigFile.java:91) [na:1.6.0_22] ... 27 common frames omitted [ERROR] [http-127.0.0.1-5080-1] org.apache.catalina.realm.JAASRealm - Cannot find message associated with key jaasRealm.unexpectedError java.lang.SecurityException: Unable to locate a login configuration at com.sun.security.auth.login. Thread.run(Thread.java:662) [na:1.6.0_22] Caused by: java.io.IOException: Unable to locate a login configuration at com.sun.security.auth.login.ConfigFile.init(ConfigFile.java:250) [na:1.6.0_22] at com.sun.security.auth.login.ConfigFile.<init>(ConfigFile.java:91) [na:1.6.0_22] ... 27 common frames omitted In addition, here is the configuration of red5-web.properties webapp.contextPath=/project Even futher information: Seems to me like it is using the right realm: MemoryRealm [INFO] [main] org.red5.server.tomcat.TomcatLoader - Setting connector: org.apache.catalina.connector.Connector [INFO] [main] org.red5.server.tomcat.TomcatLoader - Address to bind: /127.0.0.1:5080 [INFO] [main] org.red5.server.tomcat.TomcatLoader - Setting realm: org.apache.catalina.realm.MemoryRealm [INFO] [main] org.red5.server.tomcat.TomcatLoader - Loading tomcat context [INFO] [main] org.red5.server.tomcat.TomcatLoader - Server root: C:/Program Files/Red5 [INFO] [main] org.red5.server.tomcat.TomcatLoader - Config root: C:/Program Files/Red5/conf [INFO] [main] org.red5.server.tomcat.TomcatLoader - Application root: C:/Program Files/Red5/webapps [INFO] [main] org.red5.server.tomcat.TomcatLoader - Starting Tomcat servlet engine [INFO] [main] org.apache.catalina.startup.Embedded - Starting tomcat server [INFO] [main] org.apache.catalina.core.StandardEngine - Starting Servlet Engine: Apache Tomcat/6.0.26 However, immediately after bootstraping Tomcat, I am presented with the following error: Exception in thread "Launcher:/administration" org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanDefinitionStoreException: Could not resolve bean definition resource pattern [/WEB-INF/red5-*.xml]; I was wondering where and how in red5.xml should I specify bean properties such that I force red5 to use MemoryRealm that is under /conf/tomcat-users.xml, because it certainly doesn't do so now. It seems like the biggest question I have posted so far, but I tried to explain it as fully as possible as to avoid confusion.

  • Multiple "pages" in GWT with human friendly URLs

    - by Andreas Borglin
Hi. I'm playing with a GWT/GAE project which will have three different "pages", although it is not really pages in a GWT sense. The top views (one for each page) will have completely different layouts, but some of the widgets will be shared. One of the pages is the main page which is loaded by the default url (http://www.site.com), but the other two needs additional URL information to differentiate the page type. They also need a name parameter, (like http://www.site.com/project/project-name. There are at least two solutions to this that I'm aware of. Use GWT history mechanism and let page type and parameters (such as project name) be part of the history token. Use servlets with url-mapping patterns (like /project/*) The first choice might seem obvious at first, but it has several drawbacks. First, a user should be able to easily remember and type URL directly to a project. It is hard to produce a human friendly URL with history tokens. Second, I'm using gwt-presenter and this approach would mean that we need to support subplaces in one token, which I'd rather avoid. Third, a user will typically stay at one page, so it makes more sense that the page information is part of the "static" URL. Using servlets solves all these problems, but also creates other ones. So my first questions is, what is the best solution here? If I would go for the servlet solution, new questions pop up. It might make sense to split the GWT app into three separate modules, each with an entry point. Each servlet that is mapped to a certain page would then simply forward the request to the GWT module that handles that page. Since a user typically stays at one page, the browser only needs to load the js for that page. Based on what I've read, this solution is not really recommended. I could also stick with one module, but then GWT needs to find out which page it should display. It could either query the server or parse the URL itself. If I stick with one GWT module, I need to keep the page information stored on server side. Naturally I thought about sessions, but I'm not sure if its a good idea to mix page information with user data. A session usually lives between user login and logout, but in this case it would need different behavior. Would it be bad practise to handle this via sessions? The one GWT module + servlet solution also leads to another problem. If a user goes from a project page to the main page, how will GWT know that this has happened? The app will not be reloaded, so it will be treated as a simple state change. It seems rather ineffecient to have to check page info for every state change. Anyone care to guide me out of the foggy darkness that surrounds me? :-)
