• How do you prevent file confusion if version-control keywords are forbidden?

  At least two brilliant programmers, Linus Torvalds and Guido von Rossum, disparage the practice of putting keywords into a file that expand to show the version number, last author, etc. I know how keyword differences clutter up diffs. One of the reasons I like SlickEdit's DiffZilla is because it can be set to skip leading comments. However, I have vivid memories of team-programming where we had four versions of a file (two different releases, a customer one-off, and the development version) all open for patching at the same time, and was quite helpful to verify with a glance that each time we navigated to an included header we got the proper one, and each time we pasted code the source and destination were what we expected. There is also the where-did-this-file-come-from problem that arises when a hasty developer copies a file from one place to another using the file system, rather than checking it out of the repository using the tool; or, more defensibly, when files under control in locations A, B, and C need to be marshalled (with cherry-picking) into a distribution location D. In places where VCS keywords are banned, how do you cope?

• Applescript access to last.fm app via application icon in menu bar

  Hi, I want to create an Applescript to drive the last.fm player app. I'm trying to do this via last.fm application icon in the menu bar rather than using the main application menus, as this approach (I think) won't cause last.fm to switch to the foreground. The overall plan is to bind my script to a quicksilver trigger so I can stop|start|skip|love|ban|tag tracks from the keyboard. My problem is I can't find what UI element to bind the applescript to. I've used UI Browser to scan through the UI object model but it draws a blank with the last.fm icon in the menu bar. Any thoughts appreciated.

  Hi I have some services at the moment that return a dto with the following fields: [DataMember] public int Id { get; set; } [DataMember] public string Name { get; set; } and I want to add more to this service by adding the following properties: [DataMember] public virtual DateTime StartDate { get; set; } I'm not in a position where i can update the consumers of these services though - the client does that themselves.   Here is the code I used: x = linspace(0,2); e = exp(1); lin = e; quad = e-e.*x.*x/2; cub = e-e.*x.*x/2; quart = e-e.*x.*x/2+e.*x.*x.*x.*x/24; act = e.^cos(x); mplot = plot(x,act,x,lin,x,quad,x,cub,x,quart); legend('actual','linear','quadratic','cubic','quartic') This produces a legend matching the right colors to actual and linear, then after that it seems to skip over red on the graph, but not on the legend, i.e. the legend says quadratic should be red, but the graph shows it as green, the legend says cubic should be green, but the graph shows it as purple etc. Any help is appreciated.

• Mercurial Pull Error

  I am new to the dvcs world. My company uses perforce and I'm not a fan so I thought I'd try to use mercurial as a front end. I set it up on a windows machine with TortiseHG, enabled the Perfarce extension, did a small checkout (limiting the target revision) and pulled for the rest. This seemed to be more robust than clone alone. This seems to be working fairly well as I've been able to get up to change 8700 or so. My problem is with an error in the perforce repo. During the hg pull command it hits an error abort: file path/to/file.pl missing in p4 workspace and rolls back the transaction. Is there anyway to bypass or skip that file and force it to continue since this is not a file I care about.

  Hey all, I'm trying to use SubWCRev to get the current revision number of our SVN repository and put it in a file so I can show it in the UI. As I'm working with a Web App, I use the following post build command line: "SubWCRev.exe" "$(SolutionDir)." "$(ProjectDir)Content\js\revnumber.js.tpl" "$(ProjectDir)Content\js\revnumber.js" It works great, but now I want to make sure I have SubWCRev before running it, so I can skip this post build if a fellow developer is not running TortoiseSVN. I tried a few batch codes here, but couldn't figure this out. Any ideas? Thanks!

  I am looking for a good example of how to achieve the following: I would like to use get_or_create to check whether an object already exists in my database. If it does not, then it will be created. If it does exist, then I will not create the new object, but need to raise a form error to inform the user that they need to enter different data (for example, a different username). The view contains: p, created = Person.objects.get_or_create( email = registration_form.cleaned_data['email'], defaults = { 'creationDate': datetime.datetime.now(), 'dateOfBirth': datetime.date(1970,1,1) }) So 'p' will contain the existing Person if it exists, or the new Person if not. I would like to act on the boolean value in 'created' in order to skip over saving the Person and re-display the registration_form and raise an appropriate form validation error. The alternative I'm considering is doing a check in a custom Form validation method to see whether a Person exists with the data in the provided 'email' field, and just raising a validation error.

  Hello, I am working on an Excel application that queries a SQL database. The queries can take a long time to run (20-40 min). If I've miss-coded something it can take a long time to error or reach a break point. I can save the results to a sheet fine, it's when I am working with the record sets that things can blow up. Is there a way to load the data into a ADODB.Recordset when I'm debugging to skip querying the database (after the first time)? • Inheritance of Custom Attributes on Abstract Properties

  I've got a custom attribute that I want to apply to my base abstract class so that I can skip elements that don't need to be viewed by the user when displaying the item in HTML. It seems that the properties overriding the base class are not inheriting the attributes. Does overriding base properties (abstract or virtual) blow away attributes placed on the original property? • C# parsing txt files IF name format is desired format

  OK, I have txt files that I am parsing and saving into a sql db. The names are formatted like R306025COMP_272A4075_20090929_080159.txt However, there are a select few (out of thousands of files) with names that are formatted differently (particularly files that were generated as tests), example R306025COMP_SU2_TestBottom_20090915_101441.txt The reason this causes a problem for me is that I am using Split('_')[1,2,etc] to extract the R number, the 272A4075 portion, and the 20090929 (date) portion. When the application comes across the oddly named files, it fails because it is trying to parse 'TestBottom' as a date and inserts 'SU2' instead of the 272 number. Basically I want the app to recognize that if the file's name is not formatted like my first example, skip it. Any advice?

  Hi, I am trying to generate the WS client jar directly from the @Webservice class(es). Let's take this example : package com.example.maven.jaxws.helloservice; import javax.jws.WebService; @WebService public class Hello { public String sayHello(String param) { ; return "Hello " + param; } } I can generate a war file and use glassfish to serve this webservice, and from there I can use the glassfish WSDL URL to generate the client sources. What I am trying to do is to skip the glassfish part. From my maven project defining the webservice, I would like to use the jaxws-maven-plugin to create the client classes but I cannot find any way to specify the actual URL of the webservice. • How do I exclude the sources jar in mvn deploy?

  When I run "mvn deploy:deploy", maven deploys 4 jar files to my internal remote repository. They are: [module-name]-1.jar [module-name]-1.pom [module-name]-1-sources.jar [module-name]-1-tests.jar There are actually more files, such as md5 and sha1 files, being deployed. But for simplicity, I just skip these files here. Is there any way to exclude [module-name]-1-sources.jar from the deployment process? One way I can think of is to use "mvn deploy:deploy-file", which allows me to pinpoint which jar to deploy. But since I have a few dozen modules to deploy, it'll be nice if I can configure the deployment file exclusion in pom.xml. Otherwise, I'll have to write a script to deploy. Thanks, Richard

• Is there a workaround to Safari's/Opera's bug that you can't tab through hyperlinks?

  In IE, Firefox, Chrome and most Windows-based interfaces that I've used, the Tab key can be used to navigate from one form field or hyperlink to the next (e.g. "actionable" items) (note: I have not tested on other Operating Systems) However Safari and Opera skip all hyperlinks in a web page when tabbing. IMHO its a usability bug but I digress. Is there a workaround/hack to make Safari and/or Opera navigate through these links? I've noticed that Opera will accept the tabindex attribute if set e.g. tabindex="0" thus maintaining the links "index" within the flow of the DOM on the page... but Safari does not want to accept this. For those interested, this bit of jQuery will make all the hyperlinks clickable. //Make links 'tab-able' in Opera $(document).ready(function(){ if($.browser.opera){ $('a[href]').attr('tabindex', 0); } }); ...and although this seems to work for Opera... is there a better workaround?

• Continual crashing in MKMapView annotationContainer:viewForAnnotation

  I've looked at other reports on this, and none seems to apply. Our app is being crippled by frequent (but not reliably reproducible) crashes like this: Reports of this turn up a lot on the Web, but many seem to go unsolved. I'm not doing anything crazy, just showing the user position and one marker on the map. I followed the examples I could find, and I've looked at the code for goofs but can't find any. Here's how my MapView delegate handles viewForAnnotation: The crash appears to be associated with a change in the user's location, but once the user-location marker is added, I don't mess with it. When I need to refresh the one other map marker, I skip the user marker when removing the other one: The delegate is the controller for the whole screen, so it's not being deallocated; the crash occurs while the screen is up. Not that it matters, but the map display looks like this: Any guesses or insight would be much appreciated! This is on iOS 5.0.1.

• Different url scheme for Zend Framework

  For our CMS we have a site manager that defines the site's tree structure (sitemap if you want to call it that). A possible url is www.example.com/our-team/developers/chris/ which would map in the tree structure to the node chris, child old developers which is in turn a child of out-team. All this is in place and working the the wonderfully implemented Nested Set behavior in doctrine. The only thing is that i'm struggling to get it working in the front end of our website. By default Zend framework's request object expects controller/action/key/value/key/value/... URI scheme but that isn't quite fitting my needs, i would like to skip the whole controller, action and key part and restrict to values. Something like value1/value2/value3/value4/... Anyone has an idea how to accomplish this?

• C# Linq Entity Conversion Error on Nonexistent Value?

  While trying to query some data using the Linq Entity Framework I'm receiving the following exception: {"Conversion failed when converting the varchar value '3208,7' to data type int."} The thing that is confusing is that this value does not even exist in the view I am querying from. It does exist in the table the view is based on, however. The query I'm running is the following: return context.vb_audit_department .Where(x => x.department_id == department_id && x.version_id == version_id) .GroupBy(x => new { x.action_date, x.change_type, x.user_ntid, x.label }) .Select(x => new { action_date = x.Key.action_date, change_type = x.Key.change_type, user_ntid = x.Key.user_ntid, label = x.Key.label, count = x.Count(), items = x }) .OrderByDescending(x => x.action_date) .Skip(startRowIndex) .Take(maximumRows) .ToList(); Can somebody explain why LINQ queries the underlying table instead of the actual view, and if there is any way around this behavior?

  Recently I was working with a code to open a PowerPoint presentation (by vb.net) object and process each slide by slide. If processing slide is not null or a master slide I need to skip and go to the next one. Can anyone show me how to check whether a given slide is a master slide? Is there any way to check it by slide type?   Hi All, I have a java application for exaple see below. myProject | |----src | | | |--main | | | |--resources | | | |--userConfig.properties | |--log4j.properties | |---target I am using Maven to build my project .I am using maven command to build jar file. mvn package -DMaven.test.skip=true I want to exclude userConfig.properties file from my jar file so i have mentioned in pom.xml as below. <excludes> <exclude>**/userConfig.properties</exclude> </excludes> but it will exclude from the target folder in which compile code resides. And Application will not run because it will not find the userConfig.properties. Can anyone help me ? Thanks Nisarg Mehta

• CSS3PIE: Internet Explorer 6 doesn't download PIE.htc

  I'm using the very impressive CSS3PIE (http://css3pie.com) library to add support for CSS3 styles in IE6-8. It works fine in versions 7 and 8 and took a lot of pain out of the process. However, in IE6 no CSS3 styles are shown at all. In fact, looking at the server logs, I can see that IE6 doesn't even download the PIE.htc file, which is necessary for the magic to work. The content type for the file is set correctly as text/x-component, it's referenced by absolute URL, and works fine in IE7 and 8. I'm using Compass (www.compass-style.org) and the PIE helper which makes the CSS look like this: #shopping_cart { behavior: url("/media/static/css/PIE.htc"); position: relative; border-radius: 10px; } I can't figure out what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas what might cause IE6 to skip the behavior definition altogether? Cheers, Jonas
