• Sending emails in web applications

  Hi everyone, I'm looking for some opinions here, I'm building a web application which has the fairly standard functionality of: Register for an account by filling out a form and submitting it. Receive an email with a confirmation code link Click the link to confirm the new account and log in When you send emails from your web application, it's often (usually) the case that there will be some change to the persistence layer. For example: A new user registers for an account on your site - the new user is created in the database and an email is sent to them with a confirmation link A user assigns a bug or issue to someone else - the issue is updated and email notifications are sent. How you send these emails can be critical to the success of your application. How you send them depends on how important it is that the intended recipient receives the email. We'll look at the following four strategies in relation to the case where the mail server is down, using example 1. TRANSACTIONAL & SYNCHRONOUS The sending of the email fails and the user is shown an error message saying that their account could not be created. The application will appear to be slow and unresponsive as the application waits for the connection timeout. The account is not created in the database because the transaction is rolled back. TRANSACTIONAL & ASYNCHRONOUS The transactional definition here refers to sending the email to a JMS queue or saving it in a database table for another background process to pick up and send. The user account is created in the database, the email is sent to a JMS queue for processing later. The transaction is successful and committed. The user is shown a message saying that their account was created and to check their email for a confirmation link. It's possible in this case that the email is never sent due to some other error, however the user is told that the email has been sent to them. There may be some delay in getting the email sent to the user if application support has to be called in to diagnose the email problem. NON-TRANSACTIONAL & SYNCHRONOUS The user is created in the database, but the application gets a timeout error when it tries to send the email with the confirmation link. The user is shown an error message saying that there was an error. The application is slow and unresponsive as it waits for the connection timeout When the mail server comes back to life and the user tries to register again, they are told their account already exists but has not been confirmed and are given the option of having the email re-sent to them. NON-TRANSACTIONAL & ASYNCHRONOUS The only difference between this and transactional & asynchronous is that if there is an error sending the email to the JMS queue or saving it in the database, the user account is still created but the email is never sent until the user attempts to register again. What I'd like to know is what have other people done here? Can you recommend any other solutions other than the 4 I've mentioned above? What's a reasonable way of approaching this problem? I don't want to over-engineer a system that's dealing with the (hopefully) rare situation where my mail server goes down! The simplest thing to do is to code it synchronously, but are there any other pitfalls to this approach? I guess I'm wondering if there's a best practice, I couldn't find much out there by googling.

  I'm using this piece of code to send a mail: SmtpClient client = new SmtpClient(); client.Host = smtpServer; client.Send(mailMessage); If I trigger this code ten times/second, then after some hundred mails, sending a mail takes 10 seconds... Could there be a queue involved here? Shouldn't this be asynchronous?

• How to verify mail origin?

  I wish to code a little service where I will be able to send an e-mail to a specific address used by my server to send specific commands to my server. I'll check against a list of permitted e-mail addresses to make sure no one unauthorized will send a command to the server, but how do I make sure that, say, an e-mail sent by "[email protected]" really comes from "thezombie.net"? I thought about checking the header for the original e-mail server's IP and pinging the domain to make sure it is the same, but would that be reliable? Example: Server receives a command from [email protected] [email protected] is authorized, proceed with checks Server checks "thezombie.net"'s IP from the header: W.X.Y.Z Server pings "thezombie.net" for it's IP: A.B.C.D The IPs do not correspond, do not process command Is there any better way to do that?

• SmtpClient.SendAsync(); Not working on my new (64bit) computer.

  Hi All, Okay, Only a couple weeks ago I had an old 32bit computer, but had to buy a new computer, which happens to be 64bit. I've rewritten the method that sends e-mails asynchonously and it just does not work. And does NOT throw any exceptions either. What gives? I have also tried the Async method code found iin MSDN, and the BlackWasp tutorial code, and MANY others. They're all the same! The only difference here seems to be the fact that I'm now on a 64bit computer. How can I get around this? Google/MSDN has been of zero help. Thanks

• Setting amount of time to pass when sending emails in a loop

  Forgive me for this noob question, but is there such a setting that sets a certain amount of time (e.g. milli/seconds) that has to pass in between sending emails through a script? How is that setting called and where do I change that setting? I'll give an example: I used to have a PHP script that sends emails like so: for ($i=0; $i<count($emails); $i++) { mail($email[$i],'test','test'); } It turned out that not all emails were sent successfully because the script ran so fast that there was not enough time in between sending emails that was required by the server. Did I make sense?

• Exchange Server 2007 is altering href value

  I am creating an email going out to internal users with the following code that has a link to an internal directory: <a href="\\abc\123">\\abc\123</a> And for whatever reason, the mail that comes in shows: \\abc\123 and the link points to /abc/123 I am suspecting Exchange Server of somehow altering the mail message to make it less "dangerous", but I am really stuck here since this is a network address, going to internal users! When they click the link it doesn't show the directory. Any help would be much appreciated!

• Catchall Router on Exim does not work

  I'm building a web application, call it http://mywebapp.com, where a user should be able to create a newsletter and email it to everyone in his user account's contact list. So he can check mark all his friends, select an html template, fill in the body content, and send. The only catch to this is that after the user sends the email, the recipient must NOT be allowed to trace the source of the email back to http://mywebapp.com. The reason for this condition is because the user is a "reseller" of my business who wants to appear as if he's an independent business. If liability issues arise due to the reseller's unduly usage, I do not want to be caught up in the legal issues. Hence, I do not want anything about my business or technology to be traceable back to me by newsletter recipients. What's the best way to achieve this?

• Postfix - suspend domain from which deferred status was received?

  Is there a possibility to make Postfix stop trying (for a period of time) to send emails to a domain from which it received a deferred response? Currently my Postfix goes through each address in the queue. Please see the below example. At 09:48:32 the status=deferred appears. After this Postfix should stop trying to send stuff to the yahoo.com domain. • I added some options to stop spam with Postfix, but now won't send email to remote domains

  I had a working Postfix server, but added a few lines to my main.cf in a hope to block some common spam. Those lines I added were: smtpd_helo_required = yes smtpd_recipient_restrictions = reject_invalid_hostname, reject_unknown_recipient_domain, reject_unauth_pipelining, permit_mynetworks, permit_sasl_authenticated, reject_unauth_destination, reject_rbl_client multi.uribl.com, reject_rbl_client dsn.rfc-ignorant.org, reject_rbl_client dul.dnsbl.sorbs.net, reject_rbl_client list.dsbl.org, reject_rbl_client sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org, reject_rbl_client bl.spamcop.net, reject_rbl_client dnsbl.sorbs.net, reject_rbl_client cbl.abuseat.org, reject_rbl_client ix.dnsbl.manitu.net, reject_rbl_client combined.rbl.msrbl.net, reject_rbl_client rabl.nuclearelephant.com, permit It appears my postfix is now receiving normal emails fine, and blocking spam emails. • Java.lang.NullPointerException when using retreived Image (Unless method is used statically!)

  Hi there, This has been doing my head in all day and I have finally decided to resort to asking for help! In my MIDLet I have an instance of the java class ImageFetcher called anImg. Also within my MIDLet I have a command that simply say's fetch, a CommandListener that when detects fetch was clicked runs the function below. This function should simply run public getImage() from the anImg instance of class ImageFetcher which returns an image and then appends/sets this Image onto the form on the display. (You may recognise the getImage() function from the Nokia JavaME Wiki!!!) Instead of any image being displayed this is written to the output terminal in netbeans: Msg: Java.lang.NullPointerException HOWEVER, If I change public getImage() to public static getImage() and replace anImg.getImage() with ImageFetcher.getImage() the image is successfully displayed!!! • Dell 2950 Perc 6/i "physical disk" and "Enclosure(Backplane)" under Connector 1 in OMSA tree- Troubleshoot help

  Just looking for someone who might know why this could occur... In OMSA, on my Dell 2950, there usually is only one "Physical Disks" child under "Enclosure (Backplane)" in the tree view. Currently, the tree looks like this: Dell PERC 6/i Integrated Connector 1 (RAID) Enclosure (Backplane) Physical Disks (1:04 good, 1:05 removed) Physical Disks (1:33 Ready but unused) Normally it's like this: Connector 1 (RAID) Enclosure (Backplane) Physical Disks (1:04 good, 1:05 good) From the front, 6 of 6 3.5" SAS drives are connected. The server is showing Slot 5 as bad and the disk as removed. It seems that the drive in Slot 5 is being sensed as external to the Enclosure. Any ideas why this would happen? Think I can get away with rebuilding the virtual disk by replacing 1:05 with 1:33? Thanks.

• mysql C connector unresolved symbols on Win2k8 but not on XP?

  I have a visual C++ 2008 express project which compiles fine on Windows XP with mysql C connector 6.0.2. When I copy the project over to a Windows Server 2008 x64 machine, it gets a bunch of linker errors like "unresolved external symbol _mysql_server_end@0" "unresolved external symbol _mysql_close@4" "unresolved external _mysql_real_connect@32". Is the mysql C connector 6.0.2 known to not work with Win Server 2008? (Note, the C connector is installed into the same place on both machines, and since I just copied over the project wholesale, it still has the correct libmysql.lib include. The interesting thing is that the errors I get on XP if I remove the libmysql.lib are not the same errors I'm getting on Win2k8, so that's what makes me think it might be an incompatibility...or maybe it's just because win2k8 is x64 and XP is x86?) Thanks
