• svn working copy spanning 2 physical drives?

  I have a large repository hosted on dreamhost that I backup daily on a remote machine using a windows scheduled task which updates the working copy located on an external USB 300GB drive connected to the remote machine. The 300GB drive is nearly full with only 26GB of free space remaining. Recently I added a second USB external 1TB drive to increase storage capacity. I would like to ask: what is the best way to use the new 1TB drive? Is it possible to span the working copy across both drives (ex: somehow create a 1.3 TB drive)? If I copied the working copy from the 300GB to the 1TB would svn continue form do I need to retarget the update working copy script to the new 1TB drive and start downloading everything again (least desired option) thanks

• Nested svn repositories

  I got a "Project A" in repository. But in that project I'm using a library, which is hosted on Google Code. There is my question: is there any way, to have that library files "hooked" to Google Code SVN, and simultaneously my project in my repo (it's parent to that library), so I can commit library files into my repository when I decide, that outer project revision is ok? I've tried to do checkout in the library folder, files were downloaded from Google's Code repository. But I that case wasn't able to add them to my repository - they weren't visible in "Add" window.

• Subversion (SVN) equivalant to Visual Source Safe (VSS) "Share"

  Hi, I have a scenario in my project where I need to share a single file between multiple projects in the same solution. Back in my Visual Source Safe days (Shudder), I'd use the "Share" option to allow me to make changes to this file in any of the locations. Then once it was checked in I could guarantee that the other locations will get the update. I'm trying to do this in Subversion but I can't seem to find the option anywhere. I do know about svn:externals however I'm only interested in sharing a single file between multiple locations. Does anyone know how to do this in Subversion? Thanks

  I am a basic SVN user now trying to learn GIT for a new position. I am trying the usual reading docs and watching videos. However after doing all that I still feel that there is a lot that I do not know. I was wondering if there is a place like project Euler for programming languages, that provides a series of exercises that you can do just to increase your confidence and test your knowledge about a version control system. Something thats generic enough and gets you up to speed with how to do basic things. This could also serve as a comparison point of sorts between multiple VCSs, that would show what things are easy in which VCS. If there is nothing I was planning to document my journey in learning GIT and the create an exercise of this sort.

• SVN is not recognizing the changed files

  I had made changes in a folder called "branch", and now that its working I want to move all the src folder to the folder "trunk". But by copying src from local branch, pasting on local trunk and commiting the SVN commits nothing. Its like nothing had changed. Any idea how to commit this? Related question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/206183/how-can-i-force-subversion-to-commit-an-unchanged-file (Would work for me, but I know nothing about properties, exactly which one could I change and with which value to not crash something?)

• How to archive old revisions from Apache SVN on linux server

  I have a site through which user can write their own Screenplays. This screenplays are saved in the form of revisions. Apache SVN has been installed. I want to save only the last 5 revisions for every user's document. But the problem is on the backend the all the revisions are stored in one folder called "Docsrepo" and its classified as 1000 revisions in 1 folder. and like this it has 234 folders. Meaning 234*1000 revisions. Now I want to archive all of this revision to keep only the last 5 revisions of each document. How do i do that?

Those projects are about some scientific stuff, most (probably all) the code will be released under GPL after the publication of some results and we don't want to spend money for this. My first question is: should i keep my local SVN server or you know some good service for this? Both of them have some disadvantages and services like xp-dev.com looks pretty interesting but should i trust them? [i'll get only the free plan] Online services give you some tools for project management, what do you think about them?

• SVN - ignoring files already in repository

  I have a configuration file in my project which needs to be in the repository (so new developers get it when they checkout the project). Each developer might change some values in the file locally - these changes should not be committed and I don't want them showing in the synchronization menu (I'm using eclipse and subversive if it matters). Note that I can't just set the svn:ignore property since it only works on files that aren't under version control - but I do want to keep a base version of the file in the repository. How can I avoid the file showing in synchronization without deleting it from repository? EDIT: A better description - what I actually need is to be able to set a "read-only" property on the config file, so it can't be changed in the repository as long as the property is on. Do you know anything like this? Thanks

The repository is on cvsdude.com, the client is linux. I also use the subclipse plugin that caches the password ok. I vaguely remember that when I started working with it, the command asked interactively if I wanted to save clear password, and I said no. Can this choice be stored somewhere and take precedence over the configuration? Thanks!

I tried using tortise svn some got reverted some I got conflicts and I resolved my self blindly so build is breaking. So, in the following situation, I create a feature branch, and there are commits to the trunk E---F---G Feature / A---B---C---D--H--I trunk I'm looking for a tool which copies the trunk, and applies the commits one by one, letting me resolve any conflicts if any exist - but each commit retains the same commit message, and is still a separate commit. E'---F'---G' Feature / A---B---C---D--H--I trunk So commit E' will be a commit with the same changes as E, except in the case of E causing a conflict, in which case E' will differ from E in that E' has the conflicts resolved, and the same commit message as E. I'm looking for this as it helps in keeping branches up to date with trunk - the svnmerge.py / mergeinfo way does not help, as you still need to resolve your changes when you merge back to trunk.

  So my co-worker felt it necessary to go onto my development box and do some code changes, then submit his work to subversion. I never set the commit message editor, and all of a sudden, one day I forgot to add the -m handle and apparently he set the default editor to emacs. Being that I don't know the first thing about emacs and prefer vim myself, how do I go about changing the default editor for svn commands to vim after it's already been set. I deleted the .subversion directory under the home directory, and it still prompts me.

However, this has obviously broken my setup in Eclipse, giving me the error: Problems occurred opening the selected resources. The project description file (.project) for '___' is missing.   I want to be able to search within the commit logs of svn. I know you can do that on tortoise, but couldn't find a way using the command line. We are moving to a two-tiered repository approach, so that the stable branch will only get stories fully completed and tested. To achieve that, we would need a way to search within the commit messages for the story code (eg:#s1322) and get a list of the revisions to be used in a subsequent merge command. In addition to monitoring the usual OS-level suspects (I/O, disk space, logs, CPU, RAM, swapping, etc.), we're also looking to monitor, alert and report on internal application events, conditions, and counters (think queue size for internal service, or latency of a service we're getting from a third party via custom APIs). We're started looking at Nagios, Zenoss, etc., but found out those do only low-level stuff, and are currently looking at MOM and ManageEngine. Still, they are far from being an custom app monitoring tool. So - do you have anything to suggest?

• VMWare tools on Ubuntu Server 10.10 kernel source problem

  After install and running the vm-ware config, the config needs my kernel headers to compile some modules, ok, so I'll give it them, but it just won't work. It asks for the path of the directory of C header files that match my running kernel. If I uname -r I get 2.6.35-22-generic-pae So I tell it the source path is /lib/modules/2.6.25-22-generic-pae/build/include and it returns "The directory of kernel headers (version @@VMWARE@@ UTS_RELEASE) does not match your running kernel (version 2.6.35-22-generic-pae). ..I'm confused? can anyone offer suggestions please? I installed hte kernel source andh eaders myself using sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

  Hi, I need to setup an SVN repository for an iPhone / iPad app that I'm working on. It needs to be setup on a Windows server 2003 instance. We run VSS on it, but it doesn't really work all that well with XCode, so I'd like to migrate ASAP. The problem is, I'm a new graduate and this is the first time I'll be using a souce control software, so any tutorials on how to set one up, configure it to work correctly with Macs using XCode are greatly appreciated! Though it's not a priority, I'd also like to try to get my company to ditch VSS for SVN (Been reading this article yesterday - http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2006/08/source-control-anything-but-sourcesafe.html). • In Google webmaster tools, can a "soft 404" be triggered by the text on the page?

  I just ran across an error in Google Webmaster Tools that I have never seen before. I manage the website for my local community band (I play trombone). One of the pages on the site is a list of our upcoming performances. It is powered by a WordPress events plugin that uses a database of upcoming events that are entered through the administration interface. We just finished up our summer and fall concerts and our next performance will be our Christmas concert. I hadn't gotten around to adding that into the website yet, so there are no upcoming events shown on the page. In fact the text on the page says: No upcoming events listed under Performance. Check out past events for this category or view the full calendar. Then in Google Webmaster Tools, this page is showing up as a "soft 404": The page is returning a 200 status and Google is indicating that he 404 is "soft". I wouldn't have expected Googlebot to be as sophisticated to parse that particular sentence. Is Googlebot able to detect that the text on the page indicates that there is currently not content and then treat it as a 404 page because of that? If Google is treating this page as a soft 404 because of the text on the page, does that mean that like regular 404 pages, the page won't show up in search results?
