  • VMWare Host Not Responding - VMs are Disconnected (ESXi 3.5)

    - by EyeonTech
I have inherited a VMWare environement ESX v3i 3.5. I am not fluent with VMWare ESXi so bare with me. Two days ago, when I opened Virtual Centre, one of the Hosts showed up as Not Responding. The error I am seeing is:----- Unable to acquire licenses because license source is unavailable: The license manager has not been started yet, the wrong port@host or license file is being used, or the port or hostname in the license file has been changed. What I have tried: I have Stopped and Started the license server within the application. When I do this, I am able to disconnect the host in Virtual Centre and reconnect. This brings the host back online, but a few minutes later, the host goes to a not responding state again. I have rebooted the server with the Licensing software installed. While browsing Google, I have not been able to find any steps I feel comfortable performing and I would like the opinion of the VMWare pros. Where are the log files I should be looking at to correctly determine what is going on? Has anyone seen this behaviour and how did you resolve it? Thank you

  • "vagrant up" fails with "NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED" error [on hold]

    - by TahitiPetey
    I am following the basic "Getting Started" guide: http://docs.vagrantup.com/v2/getting-started/index.html I ran vagrant init <etc> followed by vagrant up, but it fails with "NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED" error. Then by enabling debug logging with VAGRANT_LOG=debug vagrant up, I get the following error output: ERROR vagrant: /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/plugins/providers/virtualbox/driver/base.rb:316:in `execute' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/plugins/providers/virtualbox/driver/version_4_2.rb:165:in `import' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/plugins/providers/virtualbox/action/import.rb:15:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/warden.rb:34:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/builtin/handle_box_url.rb:72:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/warden.rb:34:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/plugins/providers/virtualbox/action/check_accessible.rb:18:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/warden.rb:34:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/runner.rb:61:in `block in run' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/util/busy.rb:19:in `busy' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/runner.rb:61:in `run' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/builtin/call.rb:51:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/warden.rb:34:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/builtin/config_validate.rb:25:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/warden.rb:34:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/plugins/providers/virtualbox/action/check_virtualbox.rb:17:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/warden.rb:34:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/builder.rb:116:in `call' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/runner.rb:61:in `block in run' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/util/busy.rb:19:in `busy' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/action/runner.rb:61:in `run' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/machine.rb:147:in `action' /Applications/Vagrant/embedded/gems/gems/vagrant-1.2.2/lib/vagrant/batch_action.rb:63:in `block (2 levels) in run' INFO interface: error: There was an error while executing `VBoxManage`, a CLI used by Vagrant for controlling VirtualBox. • Xen on bare metal, Mac OS X 10.6, Vista, Debian as guest OSes

    - by Mischa Arefiev
I have: a desktop PC (Athlon 64, 2 cores) ...that came with Windows Vista, and a retail DVD of Mac OS X 10.6 I want: to install Mac OS X through Hackintosh (I believe my hardware is suitable), to also run Windows Vista with full 3D support for video games and Youtube, to also run Debian GNU/Linux with optional 3D for work. I don't think my CPU supports VT-x, but it should have AMD-V. So the question is: Can all of this be done with Xen (Xen on bare metal, all three OSes as guests)? Or should I just try to install OS X first and then run Vista and Debian in Parallels?

  • bash code in rc.local not excuting after bootup

    - by mrTomahawk
Does anyone know why a system would not execute the script code within rc.local on bootup? I have a post configuration bash script that I want to run after the initial install of VMware ESX (Red Hat), and for some reason it doesn't seem to execute. I have the setup to log its start of execution and even its progress so that I can see how far it gets in case it fails at some point, but even when I look at that log, I am finding that didn't even started the execution of the script code. I already checked to see that script has execution permissions (755), what else should I be looking at? Here is the first few lines of my code: #!/bin/sh echo >> /tmp/configLog "" echo >> /tmp/configLog "Entering maintenance mode"

  • Force an LXC container to use its own IP address

    - by emma sculateur
    Sorry if this question has already been asked. I could not find it, I have this setup : +---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ |HOST | | | | +-------------------------------------------------+ | | | UBUNTU-VM | | | | | | | | +-------------------+ | | | | |UBUNTU-LXC | | +------------------+ | | | | 10.0.0.3/24 | 10.0.0.1/24 | |OTHER VM | | | | | eth0-----lxcbr0----------eth0-----------br0----------eth0 | | | | | | 192.168.100.2/24| 192.168.100.1/24 |192.168.100.3/24 | | | | +-------------------+ | +------------------+ | | +-------------------------------------------------+ | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ When I ping 192.168.100.3 from my UBUNTU-LXC, the source IP address is automatically changed to 192.168.100.2 by UBUNTU-VM. It's like having a NAT, whereas I really want my UBUNTU-LXC to talk with it own IP address. Is there any way to do this ? Edit : these info may be relevant : I am using KVM +libvirt to set up my VMs Here is how I create my interface in UBUNTU-VM : <interface type='bridge'> <mac address='52:54:00:cb:aa:74'/> <source bridge='br0'/> <model type='e1000'/> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x09' function='0x0'/> </interface>

  • Tool that will virtualize BIOS

    - by Nrew
Is there any application that can virtualize the BIOS?So that you can see the effects of what the changes in the setting of your BIOS. I know that there are many versions of BIOS depending on your hardware. But is it possible to copy it and then virtualize it when you are running your system. So that you can see if your system can still run after changing the settings.

  • Volume group disappeared, LVs still available

    - by Ben
I've run into an issue with my KVM host which runs VMs on a LVM volume. As of last night the logical volumes are no longer seen as such (I can't create snapshots of them even though I have been for months now). Running any scans all result in nothing being found: [root@apollo ~]# pvscan No matching physical volumes found [root@apollo ~]# vgscan Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while... No volume groups found root@apollo ~]# lvscan No volume groups found If I try restoring the VG conf backup from /etc/lvm/backups/vg0 I get the following error: [root@apollo ~]# vgcfgrestore -f /etc/lvm/backup/vg0 vg0 Couldn't find device with uuid 20zG25-H8MU-UQPf-u0hD-NftW-ngsC-mG63dt. • Disk IO causing high load on Xen/CentOS guest

    - by Peter Lindqvist
I'm having serious issues with a xen based server, this is on the guest partition. It's a paravirtualized CentOS 5.5. The following numbers are taken from top while copying a large file over the network. If i copy the file another time the speed decreases in relation to load average. So the second time it's half the speed of the first time. It needs some time to cool off after this. Load average slowly decreases until it's once again usable. ls / takes about 30 seconds. top - 13:26:44 up 13 days, 21:44, 2 users, load average: 7.03, 5.08, 3.15 Tasks: 134 total, 2 running, 132 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 0.0%us, 0.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 25.3%id, 74.5%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.1%st Mem: 1048752k total, 1041460k used, 7292k free, 3116k buffers Swap: 2129912k total, 40k used, 2129872k free, 904740k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 1506 root 10 -5 0 0 0 S 0.3 0.0 0:03.94 cifsd 1 root 15 0 2172 644 556 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.08 init Meanwhile the host is ~0.5 load avg and steady over time. ~50% wait Server hardware is dual xeon, 3gb ram, 170gb scsi 320 10k rpm, and shouldn't have any problems with copying files over the network. disk = [ "tap:aio:/vm/dev01.img,xvda,w" ] I also get these in the log INFO: task syslogd:1350 blocked for more than 120 seconds. • Remote Desktop not following display settings

    - by John
I have my RDP client set up to use highest settings for connecting to another PC on my LAN, which has display settings 1280x1024x32bit. RDP is specifically set to use 32bit depth, but when I connect it drops to 16bit. The PC I connect to is (amongst other things) used to do some 3D graphics. I don't expect great performance, just to check it works... but it doesn't over RDP, the 3D app doesn't think the hardware is the same. Does RDP's integration with Windows mean it is providing some virtualised rendering system? Should I use something less 'clever' like VNC, to literally screen-grab the contents of the screen without altering the settings?

  • Problems using wondershaper on KVM guest

    - by Daniele Testa
I am trying to limit bandwidth on one of my KVM guest using Wondershaper. Doing something like this works fine: wondershaper br23 9000 9000 Doing a wget with the setting above gives a download speed of about 1MB/sec like it should. However, it seems this is the highest setting I can use, because setting it to this does not work: wondershaper br23 10000 10000 Doing the same wget with the setting above downloads with full speed, about 70MB/sec in my case. • Buying used windows license. How can I tell if they are still active?

    - by muhan
I want to buy used copies of Windows Full Retail Version, (XP, Vista, 7) so we can install our PC application on customers Macs using something like Vmware fusion. If we do buy these licenses, how can we tell they are legit and not being used anymore? Will it tell us when we try to activate them? Are we liable if they are being used at the same time as the original owner? Any other pitfalls to this strategy? Thanks in advance.

  • Windows 2008 running as KVM guest networking issue

    - by Evolver
I have a strange networking problem with Windows 2008 server R2, running as guest under KVM-Qemu host. Host is CentOS 6.3 x86_64. It's network settings: # cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-br0 DEVICE=br0 BOOTPROTO=static BROADCAST=xx.xx.xx.63 IPADDR=xx.xx.xx.4 NETMASK=255.255.255.192 NETWORK=xx.xx.xx.0 ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Bridge # cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 DEVICE=eth0 HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ONBOOT=yes BRIDGE=br0 IPV6INIT=yes IPV6_AUTOCONF=yes # cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=no HOSTNAME=my.hostname GATEWAY=xx.xx.xx.1 # cat /etc/sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 # tried to set it to 0 without any changes net.ipv4.conf.default.rp_filter = 1 # tried to set it to 0 without any changes net.ipv4.conf.default.accept_source_route = 0 # tried to set it to 1 without any changes kernel.sysrq = 0 kernel.core_uses_pid = 1 net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-arptables = 0 kernel.msgmnb = 65536 kernel.msgmax = 65536 kernel.shmmax = 68719476736 kernel.shmall = 4294967296 # route -n Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface xx.xx.xx.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.192 U 0 0 0 br0 169.254.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0 U 1004 0 0 br0 0.0.0.0 xx.xx.xx.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 br0 Node IP is xx.xx.xx.4, guest IP is xx.xx.xx.24, both host and guest is in the same network (/26). There are several linux guest running fine on the node (centos, debian, ubuntu, arch), and even Windows 2003 x86 also running fine. But Win2008 does not. I wonder, what's the difference. From Win2008 guest I can ping nothing: neither gateway, nor any other IP, even they are in the same subnet. From outside I also cannot ping guest. Almost. If I ping it from another server in same subnet, it's barely pinging, losing more than 90% packets. Firewall on the guest is completely off. Tried to set up network manually as well as via DHCP without success (BTW, DHCP set up network settings correctly). I suspect that is a kind of routing problem, but I spent whole day and still cannot figure it out. I would be appreciate for any help.

  • Debian: Should I add vlan interface into bridge for KVM?

    - by javano
I am setting up a Debian Squeeze box as a KVM host. I want to add multiple interfaces to each KVM guest so I want them to be on different VLANs. After reading about this, I believe the best method is to add multiple logical VLAN (sub)-interfaces to the physical NICs and then create a bridge adapter for each VLAN interace, and assign each bridge as a NIC for KVM guests. Does this make good sense, or madness? Do I have to use bridged interfaces with KVM like this? Can't I just add eth1.xx and eth1.yy to my interfaces config below and then configure those directly as bridged KVM guest NICs? If so, how should this look in the interfaces config file below? user@host:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5). # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback # Management Interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 172.22.0.31 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 172.22.0.1 # Interface for guest VMs auto eth1 # Guest1 : Use VLAN 117 auto eth1.117 iface eth1.117 inet manual # Set up br1 for guest 1, bridging with vlan 117 auto br1.117 iface br1.117 inet manual bridge_ports eth1.117 bridge_stp off user@host:~$ uname -a Linux hostname 3.4.9 #1 SMP Wed Aug 22 19:08:46 BST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux UPDATE I would really like it if someone could clarify the config for me, as I have also seen the above configured with this syntax, so I don't see why one would be preferred over the other; # Interface for guest VMs auto eth1 allow-hotplug eth1 iface eth1 inet static # Vlan 117 for guest 1 auto vlan 117 iface vlan111 inet static vlan_raw_device eth1 # Guest 1 : NIC 1 auto br1.117 iface br1.117 inet manual bridge_ports vlan117 bridge_stp off

  • What are the most important aspects to consider when choosing a SAN for a small office virtualizatio

    - by Prof. Moriarty
I am in the process of consolidating 6 physical servers running 6 different operating system flavors (don't ask) into two identical physical servers (Dell PowerEdge 2900), using the free VMware ESXi 4.0 platform. We will install an iSCSI SAN over a 1GbE network, and store all virtual machine images on the SAN. Each physical server would run 3 VMs, and in the case of a physical server failure, we would manually switch over the other 3. These are all internal servers, while important, they can tolerate some amount of downtime (say <1h) to keep cost and complexity associated with HA down. I now need to choose the SAN to be used for the setup, on a low budget. We currently have about 2TB of data, but of course I want to able to grow, do backups of VM snapshots on other drives and remove them to a different location, etc. So what I would like to know is: Which are the must have features for this setup, without which using a SAN is not worth it? We are mostly a Dell shop, so I have been looking at the EqualLogic PS4000E High Availability model. Any opinions, anecdotes, bad experiences with this model? (This is one of the few models which could accomodate our existing disks from the physical servers.) If you can recommend something that is not Dell, but it has better value, I would most definitely consider it. Caveats, things to look out for?

  • Zero'ing out deleted files

    - by Bozojoe
I want to minimize the amount of space my virtual disk is using, by zero'ing out the data on any deleted files. The virtual disk is a VDMK running ubuntu on VirtualBox. What is the best way to find any deleted files, and zero them out, so that when I export the appliance the disk size is only existing files on the disk?

  • How to subnet hosted VMs

    - by bwizzy
I have a network of VMs each having a LAN IP address and a public IP address. They each have a 1:1 NAT map for public access via the public IP for HTTP, SSH etc. I'm trying to figure out a way to restrict the LAN IPs from talking to each other, but there are some cases where a group of LAN IPs will need to communicate. I'm using pfSense as a firewall / router on a 192.168.0.0/24 configuration. It seems like I could assign each VM it's own subnet and add a static route to the firewall for that VM to get back to the firewall for internet access / other fw rules. Is that right? I assigned 1 VM with: address 192.168.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.254 gateway 192.168.1.1 Then added a static route on the FW's LAN interface using 192.168.1.0/30 as the destination network and 192.168.1.1 as the gateway. Nothing appears to be working, anyone have any ideas? Please be aware I'm not that familiar with subnets. Thanks!

  • ESXi 5.1 on Poweredge 510 freezes after base-esx update

    - by goober
Background / Problem Just experienced an issue where an ESXi host was upgraded from 5.0 -- 5.1 perfectly fine. Then, I did a scan and remediated a patch (ESXi510-201210401-BG) Looking into the host on via the kvm switch, this appears to complete successfully. However, on reboot, the server hangs at the "Initializing Power Management" phase. I've read from various spots around the internet that this usually clears itself up again upon a cold boot, but given that our servers are in a different building with different access rules, the less I have to physically go there, the better. :) Question Is there anything I can do to avoid an ESXi host hanging at the "initialize power management" phase of boot after remediating the host to apply patches?

  • Bridging VirtualBox over OpenVPN TAP adapter on Windows

    - by Sean Edwards
I'm trying to configure a virtual machine (VirtualBox guest running Backtrack 4) with a bridged adapter over a VPN connection. The VPN is is hosted by the cybersecurity club at my university, and connects to a sandboxed LAN designed for penetration testing against various servers that the club has built. My host (Windows 7 Ultimate) connects to the VPN fine and is assigned an IP through DHCP, but for some reason the VM can't do the same thing, and I'm not sure why. It's like OpenVPN is filtering out packets from the MAC address it doesn't recognize. I want the virtual machine to bridge over the VPN connection, because our IT office has very strict policies about what you can and can't do on the network. I want to be able to run active attacks (ARP spoofing, nmap, Nessus scans) in the sandbox environment without risking the traffic accidentally going over the university network and getting my internet access revoked. Bridging over the VPN connection and running all attacks from inside the VM would solve that problem. Any idea why the host can use this interface, but the VM can't?
