  • Old files on computer not visible after upgrade

    I recently upgraded Ubuntu OS to 12.04.01 version by selecting the option to upgrade and preserve old files. After installation, I am not able to view my old files on the computer. Can anyone help to retrieve all the old files and make it available with the new installation? The computer hard disk shows that it still has the capacity nearly full with all my old files.   • Upgrade to 11.10 caused rt2800usb module to be blacklisted

    I just upgraded from Kubuntu 11.04 to 11.10, and I noticed that after the upgrade my USB wireless card was no longer recognized. It turns out that the rt2800usb module had been added (automatically, I assume, unless previously the module had been loading despite being blacklisted) to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. I re-enabled the wireless card by commenting out the blacklist line and adding rt2800usb to /etc/modules, but I was wondering if there was a reason for rt2800usb being added to the blacklist.

  • Very frequent system problems since 12.10 upgrade

    Since I recently upgrade my 12.04 install to 12.10, there is loads more instability generally. I have captured just the latest example - often occurring just after startup and login. Other random times, similar things happen - not always the same executable is reported - might be many different problems. Is everyone finding 12.10 a bit unstable (in which case I can hope for fixes to filter through over the coming months)?

  • 13.10 upgrade dropping wifi [on hold]

The only way I can get a signal back is a shutdown and restart otherwise it shows no network is even available to connect to. Had no problems until the upgrade. Any help would be appreciated.     I just performed the upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The updater downloaded all packages but a few ones that the system said were already installed. When asked for it, I chose to install the new maintainer's version of grub. Now after that my system start up to the login page, some images won't load. Moreover, after I try to login, the graphical instance does not load, it just sits there showing the mouse pointer and nothing else.

  • How to upgrade a 1.4.3 TortoiseSVN created repository to 1.6.x?

    A few years ago we deployed TortoiseSVN 1.4.3 to our software development team and we used this client to create a repository on a share point. We are now looking at upgrading to the latest 1.6.x version of TortoiseSVN. I had hoped this would be transparent as the additional features and modifications will all be client-side. For the most part this is true except for a very important feature -- merging. When I try to merge a feature branch back into truck I get a "Merge tracking not supported error." So now the question becomes, how does one upgrade a 1.4.3 TortoiseSVN created repo to be compatible with the latest 1.6.x version of TortoiseSVN? As a follow up question, if we were to successfully upgrade the repo such that the 1.6.x client works flawlessly, will we still be backwards compatible with a 1.4.x client?

  • Which version control should I use for my configuration files?

    I want to store some of my configuration files (~/.emacs.d/, .Xdefaults, etc. linux $HOME stuff) in version control so I can easily sync them with my notebook/workplace and see my past changes and revert to them should the need arise. So far it seems to me that there are quite some people using git for this and I think that I too want to use a distributed vcs for this (if only to get more used to them) but I can't say that I am very experienced with all things dvcs. I did use darcs and git briefly and so far I can say that I really like the way git handles branches, and I think the possibility to have different branches within the same directory is especially useful for my use case. Darcs on the other hand has cherry picking of patches, which too is quite the convenient feature when managing configuration files (at least I assume it is). So, what would you recommend to use? And what would be your reasoning for your recommendation? What other vcs with nice feature that I haven't mentioned exist and would make a good vcs to store configuration files and why?

  • View changelog of all packages to be upgraded before upgrading

    When using synaptic on my Ubuntu desktop computer i can review all changelog of all the packages to be upgraded, and unselect a package for upgrade if I want. On my desktop I usually install everything, but I like to at least review what the changes are so that I can delay the upgrade if I suspect it could cause problems with the development tools I use. On a server (Ubuntu Server) with no x-server how can I do the same thing on the console: list all packages that will be updated (apt-get --dry-run upgrade does this along with a lot of noisy simulated install messages), view the changelog (if any) from last upgrade to the version it will be upgraded to. select which packages I want to ignore, or which I want to upgrade I've searched a lot for this but I haven't found anything, possibly I'm not using the correct terminology; but surely this must be possible. Synaptic must get it's info from some some low-level tool I assume? Complicated shellscripts are welcome too, if this is not already easily done with the existing tools.
