• Test Drive Windows 7 Online with Virtual Labs

  Did you miss out on the Windows 7 public beta and want to try it out before you actually make the leap and upgrade? Maybe you want to learn how to deploy new features in a business environment. Here’s how you can test drive Windows 7 directly from your browser. Whether you manage 10,000 desktops or simply manage your own laptop, it’s usually best to test out a new OS before installing it.  If you’re upgrading from Windows XP you may find many things unfamiliar.  Microsoft has setup a special Windows 7 Test Drive website with resources to help IT professionals test and deploy Windows 7 in their workplaces.  This is a great resource to try out Windows 7 from the comfort of your browser, and look at some of the new features without even installing it. Please note that the online version is not nearly as responsive as a full standard install of Windows 7.  It also does not run the full Aero interface or desktop effects, and may refresh slowly depending on your Internet connection.  So don’t judge Windows 7’s performance based on this virtual lab, but use it as a way to learn more about Windows 7 without installing it. Getting Started To test drive Windows 7, visit Microsoft’s Windows 7 Test Drive website (link below).  You will need to run the Windows 7 Test Drive in Internet Explorer, as it requires Active X support.  We received this error when attempting to run the Test Drive in Firefox: Now, click the “Take a Test Drive” link on the bottom left of the page. This site includes several test drives to demonstrate different features of Windows 7 and its related ecosystem of products including Windows Server 2008 R2, some of which, including the XP Mode test drive, are not yet ready.  For this test, we selected the MED-V Test drive, as this includes Office 2007 and 2010 so you can test them in Windows 7 as well.  Simply select the test drive you want, and click “Try it now!”   If you haven’t run a Windows test drive before, you will be asked to install an ActiveX control.  Click the link to install. Click the yellow bar at the top of the page in Internet Explorer, and select to Install the add-on.  You may have to approve a UAC prompt to finish the install. Once this is finished, click the link on the bottom of the page to return to your test drive.  The test drive page should automatically refresh; if it doesn’t, click refresh to reload it. Now the test drive will load the components.   Once its fully loaded, click the link to launch Windows 7 in a new window. You may see a prompt warning that the server may have been impersonated.  Simply click Yes to proceed. The test lab will give you some getting started directions; click Close Window when you’re ready to try out Windows 7. Here’s the default desktop in the Windows 7 test drive.  You can use it just like a normal Windows computer, but do note that it may function slowly depending on your internet connection.   This test drive includes both Office 2007 and Office 2010 Tech Preview, so you can try out both in Windows 7 as well. You can try out the new Windows 7 applications such as the reworked Paint with the Ribbon interface from Office. Or you can even test the newest version of Media Center, though it will warn you that it may not function good with the down-scaled graphics in the test drive.   Most importantly, you can try out the new features in Windows 7, such as Jumplists and even Aero Snap.  Once again, these features will not function the quickest, but it does let you test them out. While working with the Virtual Lab, there are different tasks it walks you through. You can also download a copy of the lab manual in PDF format to help you navigate through the various objectives. The test drive system is running Microsoft Forefront Security, the enterprise security solution from which Microsoft Security Essentials has adapted components from. Conclusion These virtual labs are great for tech students, or those of you who want to get a first-hand trial of the new features. Also, if you’re not sure on how to deploy something and want to practice in a virtual environment, these labs are quite valuable.While these labs are geared toward IT professionals, it’s a good way for anyone to try out Windows 7 features from the comfort of your current computer. • Pure virtual or abstract, what's in a name?

  While discussing a question about virtual functions on Stack Overflow, I wondered whether there was any official naming for pure (abstract) and non-pure virtual functions. I always relied on wikipedia for my information, which states that pure and non-pure virtual functions are the general term. Unfortunately, the article doesn't back it up with a origin or references. To quote Jon Skeet's answer to my reply that pure and non-pure are the general term used: @Steven: Hmm... possibly, but I've only ever seen it in the context of C++ before. I suspect anyone talking about them is likely to have a C++ background :) Did the terms originate from C++, or were they first defined or implemented in a earlier language, and are they the 'official' scientific terms?

  I'm new to Google Analytics and I'm wondering if it would be cleaner to user virtual pageviews for all the goal tracking on my website instead of using a mix of regular page views and virtual pageviews. I know in most cases this is just semantics but there are multiple pages where the same goal can be achieved and I think it would be cleaner just to fire the same virtual pageview instead of having two different goal pages. Will this model also give developers more flexibility when they do development? I know we are moving to a CMS and urls can get hairy, so I think this might be a good way to make analytics portion of the site "future proof". Any thoughts are appreciated! Thanks.

• How can I better implement A star algorithm with a very large set of nodes?

  I'm making a game with nodejs in which many enemies must converge on the player as the player moves around a relatively open space (right now it is an open field with few obstacles, but eventually there may be some small buildings in the field with 1 or 2 rooms). It's a multiplayer game using websockets, so the server needs to keep track of enemies and players. I found this javascript A* library which I've modified to be used on the server as a nodejs module. The library utilizes a Binary Heap to track the nodes for the algorithm, so it should be pretty fast (and indeed, with a small grid, say 100x100 it is lightning fast). The problem is that my game is not really tile-based. As the player moves around the map, he is moving on a more or less 1-to-1 per-pixel coordinate system (the player can move in 8 directions, 1 or 2 pixels at a time). In preliminary tests, on an 800x600 field, the path-finding can take anywhere from 400 to 1000 ms. Multiply that by 10 enemies and the game starts to get pretty choppy. I have already set it up so that each enemy will only do a path-finding call once per second or even as slow as once every 2 seconds (they have to keep updating their path because the players can move freely). But even with this long interval, there are noticeable lag spikes or chops every couple of seconds as the enemies update their paths. I'm willing to approach the problem of path-finding differently, if there's another option. I'm assuming that the real problem is the enormous grid (800x600). It also occurs to me that maybe the large arrays are to blame, as I've read that V8 has trouble with large arrays.

  I've installed Virtual Box and am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 from a downloaded ISO. Everything is going fine but I come to a choice that says no operating system is dectected on this machine, what would you like to do? 1)Erase disk and install Ubuntu (this will erase any files on the disk) or 2) Something else (choose partition size, multiple partitions, etc). Does the first option mean erase all files on the VIRTUAL DISK--NOT THE COMPUTER? Is it just talking about the virtual machine or if I select this option will it erase my Windows operating system and other files on my hard drive?

• Virtual screen size with libgdx and GLES 2

  I've been trying to use a virtual screen size for my libgdx desktop-android game. I'd like to always use a 16:9 aspect ratio but with a virtual screen size so everything would adapt automatically depending on the device size. This post illustrates the process pretty well but my game crashes when camera.apply(Gdx.Gl10) is called. This is because I'm using GLES 2.0 (for not having to use multiple of 2 texture sizes). As stated in the OrthographicCamera doc, the apply method only works with GLES 1 and GLES 1.1. Is there another way of applying my GL transformation to the camera so I can use a virtual screen resolution? Having to resize everything manually it's a total pain. Thanks a lot.

• Boot path not found, cannot start OS

  My desktop is 12.04 64bit, and it cannot boot from the hard drive anymore. When I attempt to it just is stuck on a blank screen with an blinking dash, and nothing happens. I checked with the bios trouble shoot for problems and it said that no boot path could be found. I do not know why this is happening, but need to fix it because it used to boot up normally. What I need to know is how to fix it. I can boot into a live DVD. Also, there were a few boots I would attempt to boot into a live USB, then it would boot to the hard drive, but that does not work any more. So with the live DVD (it is an 10.04 LTS 32bit), is there any means to correct the boot path from the live DVD? Thank you for your time and answers.

In manual it's given like - If you have installed a shared library it's path has to be known to the run-time linker of your operating system. On Linux systems read "man ldconfig" ( or google for it ). Another option is to use the LD_LIBRARY_PATH (on some systems LIBPATH is used instead, on MacOSX it is called DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH) environment variable. But being newbie to Linux environment, I'm not able to proceed further. Please help me with this.

• Equation / formula to determine an objects position on an ellipitcal path

  I'm making a space game, as such I need objects to follow an elliptical path (orbit). I've worked out how to calculate all the important aspects of my orbits, the only remaining thing is how to have an object follow it. My Orbit class contains the major, minor (and by extension semi-major,semi-minor) lengths. The focii radius, area and circumference even. What is the equation to determine an objects x/y position (only need 2D) on an ellipse with a certain speed after a period of time. Basically, every frame I want to update the position based on the amount of elapsed time. I would like to have the speed along the path speed up and slow down according to the distance from the object it's orbiting, but not sure how to factor this in to the above given that at any point in time the speed has changed from it's previous speed.   I'm following this tutorial located here on how to create a launcher for eclipse in unity. Everything is going pretty well so far, I've managed to successfully create the launcher but when I click on it, my system complains that the path to the exec is wrong. My exec for eclipse is located here: ~/opt/eclipse/eclipse And if you look at the tutorial you have to create a file and set it's contents like so: [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Name=Eclipse Comment=Eclipse Integrated Development Environment Icon=eclipse Exec=./opt/eclipse/eclipse Terminal=true Categories=Development;IDE;Java; In my case I have to provide the full location for the exec and there are a number of things that I tried that didn't work I set 'exec' to 'Exec=~/opt/eclipse/eclipse' , 'Exec=/opt/eclipse/eclipse' and 'Exec=root/opt/eclipse/eclipse' and none of these worked..   As the title goes , I have class named GetException.java,inside it ,I read a xml file in a static code block like(Because this document is shared): static{ ... document = db.parse(new File(System.getProperty("user.dir")+"/src/exception/ExceptionCode.xml")); ... } To test if the file path is correct, I write a main function just inside GetException.java, it proves that the path is correct ,xml file can be read successfully. My project root dir is "/home/wuchang/workspace/MongodbI". But When this Class is loaded from other class,such as I called one of its static functions , it reports the error message: /home/mrs/??/eclipse/src/exception/ExceptionCode.xml (No such file or directory) /home/mrs/??/eclipse/ is actually my eclipse installation directory.So , I wander how System.getProperty("user.dir") returned the eclipse installation directory to me ,instead of my project root directory?

• How to optimize Dijkstra algorithm for a single shortest path between 2 nodes?

  Hi, I was trying to understand this implementation in C of the Dijkstra algorithm and at the same time modify it so that only the shortest path between 2 specific nodes (source and destination) is found. However, I don't know exactly what do to. The way I see it, there's nothing much to do, I can't seem to change d[] or prev[] cause those arrays aggregate some important data for the shortest path calculation. The only thing I can think of is stopping the algorithm when the path is found, that is, break the cycle when mini = destination when it's being marked as visited. Is there anything else I could do to make it better or is that enough? P.S: I just noticed that the for loops start at 1 until <=, why can't it start at 0 and go until <?

The following, however, fails: String command = "convert" CommandLine commandLine = CommandLine.parse(command); commandLine.addArgument(...) ... int exitValue = executor.execute(commandLine); If I specify the full path of the convert executable (C:\Program files\...) then this code works. If I don't do this, I get an exception thrown with exit value 4. How do I get commons-exec to recognize the system path?

  Hello, I am trying to learn python and am making a program that will output a script. I want to use os.path.join but am pretty confused (I know I am very bad at scripting/programming) See, according to the docs ( http://docs.python.org/library/os.path.html ) if I say os.path.join('c:', 'sourcedir') I get C:sourcedir as it's output. According to the docs, this is normal (right?) But when I use the copytree command, Python will output it the desired way, for example import shutil src = os.path.join('c:', 'src') dst = os.path.join('c':', 'dst') shutil.copytree(src, dst) Here is the error code I get WindowsError: [Error 3] The system cannot find the path specified: 'C:src/.' If I wrap the os.path.join with os.path.normpath I get the same error If this os.path.join can't be used this way, then I am confused as to its purpose According to the pages suggested by Stack Overflow, slashes should not be used in join--that is correct I assume?   This is the PATH variable without sudo: $ echo 'echo $PATH' | sh /opt/local/ruby/bin:/usr/bin:/bin This is the PATH variable with sudo: $echo 'echo $PATH' | sudo sh /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin As far as I can tell, sudo is supposed to leave PATH untouched. What's going on? How do I change this? (This is on Ubuntu 8.04). UPDATE: as far as I can see, none of the scripts started as root change PATH in any way. From man sudo: To prevent command spoofing, sudo checks ``.'' and ``'' (both denoting current directory) last when searching for a command in the user's PATH (if one or both are in the PATH). Note, however, that the actual PATH environment variable is not modified and is passed unchanged to the program that sudo executes.
