• Increase application performance on Amazon AWS

  I've got a client with an MVC v1 (.NET) application running on a micro instance. On this instance, I've got .NET, IIS 7.5, and MS SQL Server 2008 running to handle the application. The client has reported that it is taking nearly 10 seconds to process each request. Even loading the initial login page takes about that long, then logging in takes that long, etc etc. The currently running instance specs are as follows: 615 MB RAM Intel Xenon CPU E5430 @ 2.66GHz 2.78 GHz 64-Bit Is the memory availability the issue? or is it the processing power? I forsee two options: Change to a larget instance Set up a 2-tier architecture with two micro instances Which of these will give the application better performance? Thanks in advance.

• Computer crashes and won't start, LED indicator blinks slowly

  I have a MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard coupled with a AMD Athlon 3700+ and an Antec TPII-550 power supply. The computer crashes at random times in operation, sometimes taking a while to crash, and sometimes crashing right after Windows XP shows the desktop after boot. The CPU temperature is always in the safe range, usually 30-33 degrees Celsius, and swapping the RAM has not done anything, so the crashes aren't cause by the RAM. What could be causing this? If the motherboard were fried, would the computer even boot at all? What causes inconsistent crashing of the computer? After the computer crashes, the LED power indicator blinks about once a second, and the computer does not respond to the power button. This behavior continues until the computer's power supply is completely removed.

• Why does my custom Amazon EC2 AMI have limited instance type options?

  The Basic 64-bit Amazon Linux AMI has the following instance type options available: Micro Large Extra-Large High-Memory Extra Large ... etc I booted up this AMI as a micro type, made customizations, shut it down, detached the volume, took a snapshot, and registered my own custom AMI: ec2-register –snapshot [snapshot_id] –description "my description" –name "my name" –kernel aki-427d952b That worked. HOWEVER, when I try to create an instance from my custom AMI, only the following instance types are available: Micro Small High-CPU Medium ... which coincidentally are the same instance types available if you try to boot up the 32-bit Amazon image. Why are the available instance types of my custom image varying from the available instance types of the image I based it off of?

• What is the best position for power unit?

  I would like to buy new computer case. Last time I bought a computer was in 2008 and many things have changed up to day. Many new computer cases have power unit placed down, on bottom. I'm thinking about buying some of those cases, but i'm not sure about something - if power unit is placed on the bottom it can't take away hot air from the case and pump it out right? All my PC parts are silent - CPU (E8200, placed below 12cm Nochtua fan of power unit) has heat-pipe cooler with Nochtua fan spinning at only 800rpms, GPU has cooler powered by 7V instead 12 and that's why i don't want to HAVE TO place another fan to pump out hot air instead of PU placed on top. That might make some noise. So i ask someone more experienced: if i buy some computer case with PU placed down, do i HAVE TO place some fan to pump out hot air?

• Linux process management

  Hello, I started a long running background-process (dd with /etc/urandom) in my ssh console. Later I had to disconnect. When I logged in, again (this time directly, without ssh), the process still seemed to to run. I am not sure what happened - I did not use disown. When I logged in later, the process was not listed in top at first, but after a while it reclaimed a high CPU percentage, as I expected. So I assume dd is still running. Now, I'd like to see the progress. I use kill -USR1 <pid> but nothing is printed. Is there any way to get the output again?

• Disk Redundancy across different server

  I have 3 servers, all with the same specs: Intel CPU 8 GB RAM Linux or BSD Single 2TB desktop SATA with more than 10K Hours of operation, with only less than 300 GB Used My provider cannot install a second hard drive, but can guarantee me that the drive will be replaced immediately in case of failure, with another equally crappy drive. The likelihood of drive failure is high, and since I can't use RAID, I was thinking about keeping a back up of each machine on all the other machines, so that there are always 2 copies on 2 different drives, plus the original. I would synchronize the drives every hour, with rsync, to guarantee some sort of redundancy, since bandwidth inside the DC is free, so it would be much cheaper than offsite backup. (A daily offiste backup is kept anyhow). What do you think? Any suggestion?

• Displaying ppt, doc, and xls in UIWebView doesn't work but pdf does

  It looks like a few people on stackoverflow get this to work but their code isn't posted. I'm using [web loadData:data MIMEType:MIMEType textEncodingName:@"UTF-8" baseURL:nil]; where MIMEType is: @"application/vnd.ms-powerpoint" @"application/vnd.ms-word" @"application/vnd.ms-excel" (BTW, I've seen DOC files use mimetype @"application/msword" but the "vnd" version seems more appropriate. I tried both just in case.) I verified that my 'data' is correct. PDF and TXT files work. When the UIWebView displays PPT, DOC, or XLS files, it's blank. I put NSLOG statements in my UIWebViewDelegate calls. shouldStartLoadWithRequest:<NSMutableURLRequest about:blank> navType:5 webViewDidStartLoad: didFailLoadWithError:Error Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=100 UserInfo=0x122503a0 "Operation could not be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error 100.)" didFailLoadWithError:Error Domain=WebKitErrorDomain Code=102 UserInfo=0x12253840 "Frame load interrupted" so obviously the load is failing, but why? If I change my mimetype to @"text/plain" for a PPT file, the UIWebView loads fine and displays unprintable characters, as expected. That's telling me the 'data' passed to loadData: is ok. Meaning my mimetypes are bad? And just to make sure my PPT, DOC, and XLS files are indeed ok to display, I created a simple html file with anchor tags to the files. When the html file is displayed in Safari on the iPhone, clicking on the files displays correctly in Safari. • How do i have 4GB of video memory with a 1GB video card?

  I ran the direct X diagnostic tool to take a look at my graphics capabilities and its telling me that the approximate video memory is clocked in at 4096MB. That doesn't make any sense, how is that possible? The only things that i can think of were that DirectX was inaccurate so i looked at the graphics statistics of my computer on CPU-Z which was included with the motherboard and that's telling me i have "negative" 1988MB. Not only is that not 4096MB, but its giving me a negative number and i know for a fact that you can't have a negative amount of memory???!!! The only things i can think of that would be amplifying my video memory output is the PCIe 3.0 bus, or that the motherboard is somehow including the on board video chip set with the video card which only then is only 2GB of video memory, which still has to be being amplified by something. Any suggestions?

• Loading Liferay Properties from Spring IoC container (to get jdbc connection parameters)

  I'm developing some portlets for Liferay Portal 5.2.3 with bundled tomcat 6.0.18 using Spring IoC container. I need to map the User_ table used in Liferay database to an entity with Hibernate, so I need to use two different dataSources to separate the liferay db from the db used by portlets. My jdbc.properties has to hold all connection parameters for both databases: no problem for the one used by portlets, but I am having issues determining which database uses liferay to hold its data. My conclusion is that i should have something like this: liferayConnection.url=jdbc:hsqldb:${liferay.home}/data/hsql/lportal in order to get the database url dynamically loaded, according to Liferay properties found in portal-ext.properties. (Or, better, load the whole portal-ext.properties and read database properties from there). The problem is that the placeholder is not resolved: Caused by: org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanDefinitionStoreException: Invalid bean definition with name 'liferayDataSource' defined in class path resource [WEB-INF/applicationContext.xml]: Could not resolve placeholder 'liferay.home' To dodge this problem I tried to load explicitly portal-ext.properties with a Spring bean: <bean id="liferayPropertiesConfigurer" class="org.springframework.beans.factory.config.PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer" p:location="../../portal-ext.properties"/> but no luck: liferay.home is not resolved but there aren't other errors. How can I resolve the placeholder defined by Liferay? Thanks

• Structuremap and generic types

  Hi I have a situation which seems a bit different from others I've seen. For clarrification, this isn't the normal question eg; something like IAClass maps to AClass etc - that involves using basically a single concrete classes per interface. This involves having a single generic class, but I want to be able to load ALL possible usages of it. Eg - the main class is of public class MyClass<TDomainObject> : IMyClass<TDomainObject> where TDomainObject : DomainObject So example usages would be IMyClass<Person> p = new MyClass<Person>; IMyClass<Employer> p = new MyClass<Employer>; I.e. for all DomainObjects I would like to be able to load a MyClass< for. So you can see I don't use a specific class for each declaration, they all use the same one. How would I get this loaded into StructureMap?

• Zend framework "invalid controller" error message

  When I load the homepage of a ZF site I get a message saying "Invalid controller specified (error)" where "error" seems to be the name of the controller. • ajax error when calling from javascript

  Hi, I' still newby to this so I'll try to explain what I'm doing. Basically what I want is to load a dropdownlist depending on the value of a previous one, and I want it to load the data and appear when the other one is changed. • Intel VT-x disappeared after upgrading to Windows 8

  I've upgraded to Windows 8 some weeks ago (MSDNAA!) and today, while I was trying to run a VM, I've noticed that VT-x is disabled. Now, Hyper-V works without problems, as I've tried emulating Win7 and WP8; but VirtualBox says that VT-x is disabled and it can't run my VM. Just to double check, I've run Securable by GRC and the Intel utility and both says that I've got VT-x off. Here comes the problem: VT-x is ON in my BIOS, and it worked flawlessly before upgrading to Windows 8! Any kind of suggestion? EDIT: My CPU supports VT-x: http://ark.intel.com/products/52219

  Maybe a little more of the same questions that others have asked but wanted to clarify my doubt, for some years run my hosting company (reseller of esds) and I've done well so far, but I am determined to bring quality and server technology to offer another level. So far I have understood that there is a difference between cloud and cluster servers because the cluster function as load balancers that distribute in different servers roles and use the servers less overloaded in the cloud is the union of multiple servers and then the same is vitualized unlike the cluster that is allowed to use the resources of the CPU and RAM servers in the virtualized environment. My approach is to use 3 dedicated servers to create a cloud server, My doubts: Does this type of cloud servers are only reserved for big companies? (Either because the union of the servers is done by hardware or software with high price) What characteristics should these servers meet? Possibly through software which should be used? Available?   Hi guys, I want to be able to do the following: I have a model and inside there I do have an entity. This entity has the following structure: public class Client { public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } } What I want now, is to just get the client name based on the id. Therefore I wrote a stored procedure which is doing this. CREATE PROCEDURE [Client].[GetBasics] @Id INT AS BEGIN -- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from -- interfering with SELECT statements. SET NOCOUNT ON; SELECT Name FROM Client.Client INNER JOIN Client.Validity ON ClientId = Client.Id WHERE Client.Id = @Id; END Now, going back to VS, I do update the model from the database with the stored procedure included. Next step is to map this stored procedure to the client entity as a function import. This also works fine. Trying now to load one client's name results into an error during runtime... "The data reader is incompatible with the specified 'CSTestModel.Client'. A member of the type, 'Id', does not have a corresponding column in the data reader with the same name." I am OK with the message. I know how to fix this (returning as resultset Id, Name, Description). My idea behind this question is the following: I just want to load parts of the entity, not the complete entity itself. Is there a solution to my problem (except creating complex types)? • Spring-hibernate mapping problem

  I have a spring-hibernate application which is failing to map an object properly: basically I have 2 domain objects, a Post and a User. The semantics are that every Post has 1 corresponding User. The Post domain object looks roughly as follows: class Post { private int pId; private String attribute; ... private User user; //getters and setters here } As you can see, Post contains a reference to User. When I load a Post object, I want to corresponding User object to be loaded (lazily - only when its needed). My mapping looks as follows: <class name="com...Post" table="post"> <id name="pId" column="PostId" /> <property name="attribute" column="Attribute" type="java.lang.String" /> <one-to-one name="User" fetch="join" class="com...User"></one-to-one> </class> And of course I have a basic mapping for User set up. As far as my table schema is concerned, I have a table called post with a foreign UserId which links to the user table. I thought this setup should work, BUT when I load a page that forces the lazy loading of the User object, I notice the following Hiberate query being generated: Select ... from post this_ left outer join user user2_ on this.PostId=user2_.UserId ... Obviously this is wrong: it should be joining UserId from post with UserId from user, but instead its incorrectly joining PostId from post (its primary key) with UserId from user. Any ideas? Thanks!

• MySQL on Linux out of memory

  OS: Redhat Enterprise Linux Server Release 5.3 (Tikanga) Architecture: Intel Xeon 64Bit MySQL Server 5.5.20 Enterprise Server advanced edition. Application: Liferay. My database size is 200MB. RAM is 64GB. The memory consumption increases gradually and we run out of memory. Then only rebooting releases all the memory, but then process of memory consumption starts again and reaches 63-64GB in less than a day. Parameters detail: key_buffer_size=16M innodb_buffer_pool_size=3GB inndb_buffer_pool_instances=3 max_connections=1000 innodb_flush_method=O_DIRECT innodb_change_buffering=inserts read_buffer_size=2M read_rnd_buffer_size=256K It's a serious production server issue that I am facing. • Ubuntu server very slow out of the blue sky (Rails, passenger, nginx)

  I run Ubuntu server 8.04 on Linode with multiple Rails apps under Passenger + nginx. Today I've noticed it takes quite a lot of time to load a page (5-10 secs). And it's not only websites, ssh seems to be affected too. Having no clue why this may be happening, I started to check different things. I checked how the log files are rotated, I checked if there's enough free disk space and memory. • More than 3 seconds "Initial Connection" time (webpagetest.org)

  I'm having a weird issue with a vBulletin forum, on a 2? Xeon E5645 w/ 16GB RAM, cPanel and LiteSpeed webserver; It takes too long to start loading... When I tested it with webpagetest.org I saw that for every request there's a 3 second "Initial connection" delay, which I don't know why is happening. Here's a screenshot: CPU Load is between 0.03 and 0.05, I've got several GB of free RAM, practical no I/O activity, and this delay can occur even with only one visitor on the forum. Where do you suggest I start searching? What could be the reason for this kind of delay? I don't think it's the webserver, or the forum because there's another website on the server (total 2 sites) which is WordPress based, and has exactly the same issue with the 3 second initial connection delay. I believe it's OS related, but need a clue on where to start looking. Thanks in advance :)

  I am reviewing quote for a server upgrade. (RHEL). The server will have both Apache and MySQL on it, but the reason for upgrade is to increase DB performance. CPU has been upgraded massively, but I know that disk speed is also a factor. So RAID 10 is faster performance than RAID 5, but how much difference does the drive speed make? (The 15k discs in the RAID 5 config is at the top of my budget btw, hence not considdering 4x15k discs in RAID 10, which I assume would be the optimum.)

  os: up-to-date Fedora 14. Working as a "normal desktop". It's doing very well, but if i start VirtualBox, and e.g.: install a guest on it, it just "freezez". I mean if there are disk activities on a VirtualBox guest, then the computer becomes unrespondable..even the mouse is laggin for about 50 minutes.. What could be the bottleneck? What could be the problem? If anyone has any tips/howtos to speed it up, please help! It has a normal 2,5" HDD, with 5400 RPM. Does it worth for me if i buy a 2,5" HDD with 7200 RPM? T7200 cpu, 4 GByte RAM, "vm.swappiness = 0". Thank you!

Any reason why the page would not display?   I've always developed code in a SOA type of way. This year I've been trying to do more DDD but I keep getting the feeling that I'm not getting it. At work our systems are load balanced and designed not to have state. The architecture is: Website ===Physical Layer== Main Service ==Physical Layer== Server 1/Service 2/Service 3/Service 4 Only Server 1,Service 2,Service 3 and Service 4 can talk to the database and the Main Service calls the correct service based on products ordered. Every physical layer is load balanced too. Now when I develop a new service, I try to think DDD in that service even though it doesn't really feel like it fits. I use good DDD principles like entities, value types, repositories, aggregates, factories and etc. I've even tried using ORM's but they just don't seem like they fit in a stateless architecture. I know there are ways around it, for example use IStatelessSession instead of ISession with NHibernate. However, ORM just feel like they don't fit in a stateless architecture. I've noticed I really only use some of the concepts and patterns DDD has taught me but the overall architecture is still SOA. I am starting to think DDD doesn't fit in large systems but I do think some of the patterns and concepts do fit in large systems. Like I said, maybe I'm just not grasping DDD or maybe I'm over analyzing my designs? Maybe by using the patterns and concepts DDD has taught me I am using DDD? Not sure if there is really a question to this post but more of thoughts I've had when trying to figure out where DDD fits in overall systems and how scalable it truly is. The truth is, I don't think I really even know what DDD is?

• moving to a new dedicated server and need advice on the new setup

  I currently have a dedicated server that we have outgrown and we are moving to another server. Our current setup was a 8gb W2008R2 server running a W2008R2 IIS virtual machine using VMWare. We are moving to a 2 cpu 24 gb server with W2012 R2 on Hyper-V. On our virtual machine we are running iis 7.5 and sql server. Sql Server seems to want to eat up all the memory so I had to cap it at 2gb, which doesn't seem sufficient. My question is, when I move the virtual machine to the new server, should I create 2 virtual machines, one for sql server and one for IIS? Or should I leave them both on the same virtual machine? Or even, put the Sql Server on the dedicated server and run the IIS in the vm? I'd like some input on how this should be done, I've not got the experience needed to make the right call. Thanks!
