• Remote monitoring with screen capture

  Is there anyway i can perodically take screenshots of a remote computer using nagios? I am experimenting with Nagios, and i am trying to explore different monitoring. So my question is apart from using nagios to monitor cpu usage, bandwidth utilization, uptime etc.. can i monitor my worker's productivity by checking what is he doing on his computer in a form of image output. Being able to monitor processes would not be of much help to me, as i only know if he or she is running firefox.exe for example he maybe using excessive use of firefox for facebook or other stuff but he claims he is troubleshooting and looking for solutions on forums. I saw a check_vnc script but i am unable to install the requsite vnc server anyone succesfully tried the vnc script care to share how to go about it? If not anyother way to try this?

• Email notification and mail server

  I am building a web application with email notification just like Facebook, which will host in http://www.linode.com/. When a user A comment to a post, the poster will get an email notification from '[email protected]' with the comment message written by user A. (Not spam) I really like Google Apps but they have sending limits 2000 sending per day, that is not suit for my case becuz I cannot have sending limits. My web application will host in linode, I am considering "Amazon Simple Notification Service" for the email notification. My questions are Any other recommend email service provider suits my case for me? Can I bind company email accounts(ex: [email protected]) with Google Apps and bind [email protected] with other email service provider?

• Save static version of a webpage to be available offline

  Is there a way to save a webpage as static HTML, available for offline viewing, editing etc.? I want to remove all javascript files. Leave only HTML, CSS and images. For example, if this web page has a Facebook Like button, I want the image of the button to be part of the HTML as a regular image (and not be loaded as some Javascript code runs after I load the page). I'm trying to prepare a webpage for an offline demo. When I use the standard "save as HTML complete" like tools, all the Javascript is saved as well, and when viewed offline, all the dynamic content is blanks. Note- I don't expect the dynamic content to work, of course, with no Javascript. I just want the web page to LOOK as though it was just loaded from the interwebs. Thanks, Tal.

• qtcreator keyboard problem: azerty/qwerty

  I picked up the qt SDK and I've been trying it out. I'm working in English but I have a French AZERTY keyboard. When I run Qt Designer all is fine. When I run Qt Creator or Qt Designer from within Qt Creator things work as though I had a QWERTY keyboard, so I have to hit the "q" key to get an "a", etc. Qt Creator is version 1.3.1 and it is using Qt 4.6.2. My PC is running XP. What is going on and what is to be done? Any ideas? Editing a program in this setup is, of course, impossible! Luckily I discovered I can use an external editor, so I can use xemacs, which would be my first choice anyway, but this keyboard problem is a real nuisance! Thanks.

• PHP DL Function

  Is allowing dynamic extension loading dangerous for some reason? I ask because I need it to include the pecl oauth.so extension to make the Google Adwords PHP SDK work using dl(). I've tried all other alternatives but just can't get it to work: http://php.net/manual/en/function.dl.php enable_dl is set to off by default inside my php.ini, I enabled it, restarted apache and it works. If it's safe to use why is it disabled by default? I'm the only user with access to the server and it will be hosting a web application. Any advice would be helpful!

• MASM Syntax Highlighting in C++ for Visual Studio 2010

  So, I had Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, and everything was great. However, I was confused, thought I wanted MASM, and installed the SDK. This causes strange problems for syntax highlighting. When I'm editing a C/C++ file, for instance, a lot of words (e.g., "data", "add", "sub", "mul", "div", "eax", etc.) are highlighted. At first, I thought I'd just learn to live with it, but it has gotten annoying. I could find nothing online, so, I deleted the MASM folder completely (method of uninstallation), uninstalled Visual Studio, and then installed it again. I firedit up, and the problem persists. • Why does File::Slurp return a scalar when it should return a list?

  I am new to the File::Slurp module, and on my first test with it, it was not giving the results I was expecting. It took me a while to figure it out, so now I am interested in why I was seeing this certain behavior. My call to File::Slurp looked like this: my @array = read_file( $file ) || die "Cannot read $file\n"; I included the "die" part because I am used to doing that when opening files. My @array would always end up with the entire contents of the file in the first element of the array. Finally I took out the "|| die" section, and it started working as I expected. I have a feeling this might be more of a Perl precedence question instead of a File::Slurp question. I looked in the File::Slurp module and it looks like it is set to croak if there is a problem, so I guess the proper way to do it is to allow File::Slurp to croak for you. • Advantage of using a smartfox server

  Hi, we are trying to outsource the server side of our game applicaton to someone. They recommend using http://www.smartfoxserver.com/ instead of our traditional php/mysql combination. Our game is in actionscript and will be using social aspects of facebook later on. Smartfoxserver is supposed to reduce the time of development. The thing I'm having a hard time getting right now is how? How does it reduce the time. We will still be making a RDMS writing stored procedures and game logic based server scripts. • GoogleTest C++ Framework Incompatible With XCode 4.5.2 and OSX 10.8.2

  I am trying to follow the instructions mentioned here for setting up Google's C++ framework in XCode Version 4.5.2 (4G2008a). First, I got "The run destination My Mac 64-bit is not valid for Running the scheme 'gtest-framework'". The answers here Xcode 4 - The selected run destination is not valid for this action are not working for me. I was able to change the build SDK following the instructions here Unable to build using Xcode 4 - The selected run destination is not valid for this action, except this resulted in many build failures such as "Unsupported compiler '4.0' selected for architecture 'x86_64'" and "Unsupported compiler '4.0' selected for architecture 'i386'" I've changed nothing out of the box, so this is very frustrating that I cannot seem to get this to build. • What kind of server hardware is roughly necessary to serve website to 10k users?

  I've been looking at VPS's and the specs they offer for entry level setups seems somewhat surprising to me. I'm am new to this topic but many of VPS offer less than 512MB of memory and my laptop has 4GB of memory so I am curious what does it actually take in terms of hardware to serve say 10k users (say 5k daily active users)? I figure a large number of factors can probably sway this a lot but just for benchmarking, say the site is a social networking site written in php using mysql + apache that's not really doing anything unusual like serving lots of media. So essentially a very basic Facebook minus the absurd number of photos and videos. What about 100k users (50k daily active)? 1 million (500k daily active)? Thanks in advance.

• cannot install new drivers for ATI Radeon HD mobility

  I have an ATI mobility Radeon HD 3200 graphics card with a driver that I downloaded from my computer manufacturer's site. I wanted to upgrade the driver so I downloaded the respective driver from ATI and ran the installation. However, the installation only installs the download manager, the App SDK, C++ distributables and CCC, no display driver. When I try opening the CCC, I get an error that quits the CCC, something about the display driver not being recognized. What is wrong here? How do I go about fixing this? thanks

• Weird internet connection behavior

  I'm having a strange problem with my internet connection. At the moment my ISP is Fastweb (an italian provider) and i noticed that sometimes i can't load some sites, then all i have to do is wait 5 minutes and then i can load the site again. Some other times, instead, images won't load on certains sites (this always happens with 500px.com or Facebook rarely). I noticed that if i use VPN software like Privitize VPN or Spotflux everything works like a charm. Is something wrong with my internet configuration? Thank you.

• Google Chrome never renders fonts properly / no smoothing etc

  A while ago I started using Chrome and no longer Firefox, however I found out something weird which maybe force me to return to Firefox if I can not fix this. I am coding a homepage and the output was in Chrome ugly, in Firefox not. I thought "ok this is maybe due to bad code"... however I found out that the same problems occurs on different sites like Facebook too. The font is not smoothed and it is not nice to read. Here is an example, although I have censored nearly everything... Bad Chrome Rendering Good Firefox Rendering You may need to open up in a new tab to see the errors in detail. Now I want to know, whether this is just Chrome trolling me or maybe something else. EDIT I tried it out under Ubuntu on my PC and it works well... seems to be an error on Windows/Chrome on Windows.

I have never worked on linux and dont plan on working on it either - The only command I probably know is "ls" :) I am hosting my website on Eapps and use their cpanel to setup everything so never worked with linux. Now I have this one time case - where I need to provide access to a contractor to fix the CSS issues on my website. He basically needs FTP (read/write) access to certain folders. At a high level - this is my code structure /home/webadmin/example.com/html/images /css /js /login.php /facebook.php /home/webadmin/example.com/application/library /views /models /controllers /config /bootstrap.php /home/webadmin/example.com/cgi-bin I want the new user to be able to have access to only these folders /home/webadmin/example.com/html/js /home/webadmin/example.com/html/css /home/webadmin/example.com/application/views He should not be able to view even the content of other folders including files like bootstrap.php or login.php etc If any sys admins can help me set this account up - will really appreciate it. • how to disable isight auto adjustments ?

  The built-in isight cam on my macbook machine keeps re-adjusting the lighting (and focus I think). I need to manually set those, but I found nothing of any use in System Preferences or System Profiler. Any way to access the settings ? Any magic terminal commands that allows access to the camera ? Anyone has a driver that allows for any camera access ? 'mac - it just works'...sure, if you want to use it like a kid. the second you actually want to do something with you mac other than the basic things, you can do on ANY regular machine anyway, your 'rights' are done with, as apple seems to only encourage dumb clients. I'm not saying saying this applies to all mac users, but the 'typical/average' one in my view is only going to use it for media(music,video) and web(facebook,blogging, all that) and maybe podcasting,webcasting,etc....ok this is turning into a rant, so I will finish here.

• Skype Silent Mode

  So Skype has a silent mode: e.g. it won't alert you in any way about incoming calls/messages. I'd like to use that mode while working to keep Skype from distracting me. I'd rather not quit the program or signoff during that time. Is there a simple way to put Skype in that mode? There's an option for it in their SDK but not in the software. There are third party apps that do it (among other things), but there doesn't seem to be a simple solution for this. Help please!

I am doing a little research on where small companies would go on the internet to get answers for technology related questions. Could be around sales, servers, programming, etc. Clearly superuser.com, serverfault.com, and stackoverflow.com are excellent starting points. I am just wondering if anyone has heard of any others. • Most efficient Way to setup a game server

  I'm running a PHP based game which has over 45 Million members predicted for end of this year (2011) Currently we are on 7.5 Million, this game is being ran on facebook and I am in desperate need to help get this game server as efficient and as powerful as possible. it is a dedicated server with Processor Manufacturer Intel Model i7 920 Frequency 4x 2x 2.66 GHz NIC GigaEthernet RAM 12 GB Hard disk 4 x 1 TB specs. It has apache installed, cPanel, phpMyAdmin, several apache mods and MySQL. The game also runs 47 mysql calls per second per user. Is there any alternatives to the above which could be faster, more efficient etc? I dont mind having to recode the game to fit to it, as long as it maximises our upper limit of members on the game. Thanks Also, is there a way to tell what our maximum limit to players, database calls etc is? Thank you again, hope you guys can help :)

  I currently have my main hard drive split into two partitions. One being Windows 7 with about 600 GB of memory, the other Windows 8 Consumer Preview with about 50 GB. As you can guess it is set up for a dual boot. Today while looking up how to get the C# Facebook SDK for Metro apps I learned about the Release Preview being released. I was wondering: How do I go about getting rid of Windows 8 Consumer Preview and replacing it with the Release Preview? I know i can't just wipe it off my second partition because the dual boot uses Windows 8 to choose the operating system to boot.

• Industry Standard DNS & Authentication?

  I'm just curious as to what is considered industry standard when it comes to doing DNS and authentication on an environment with mainly linux machines? Do people use Windows DNS & Windows AD to do it all if they have at least one windows server (well - alot might, but should they)? Does ANYONE use hosts files or local only user accounts on each server? What would people like Facebook/Google use for their DNS and authentication on their servers? We have an environment where we have about 10-15 linux servers and 1-2 windows servers. We are currently using Windows AD and Windows DNS but it doesn't seem like it's the most secure/stable/scalable way to do it for a mainly linux environment? We use RHEL as our linux environment.
