• Why is there a Null Pointer Exception in this Java Code?

  This code takes in users and movies from two separate files and computes a user score for a movie. • Java.lang.NullPointerException when using retreived Image (Unless method is used statically!)

  Hi there, This has been doing my head in all day and I have finally decided to resort to asking for help! In my MIDLet I have an instance of the java class ImageFetcher called anImg. Also within my MIDLet I have a command that simply say's fetch, a CommandListener that when detects fetch was clicked runs the function below. This function should simply run public getImage() from the anImg instance of class ImageFetcher which returns an image and then appends/sets this Image onto the form on the display. (You may recognise the getImage() function from the Nokia JavaME Wiki!!!) Instead of any image being displayed this is written to the output terminal in netbeans: Msg: Java.lang.NullPointerException HOWEVER, If I change public getImage() to public static getImage() and replace anImg.getImage() with ImageFetcher.getImage() the image is successfully displayed!!! • Weird behaviour with Scanner#nextFloat

  Running the following in Eclipse initially caused Scanner to not recognize carriage returns in the console effectively blocking further input: price = sc.nextFloat(); Adding this line before the code causes Scanner to accept 0,23 (french notation) as a float: Locale.setDefault(Locale.US); This is most probably due to regional settings in Windows XP Pro. When the code is run again 0,23 is still accepted and entering 0.23 causes it to throw a java.util.InputMismatchException. Any explanation as to why this is happening? Also is there a workaround or should I just use Float#parseFloat? • Set the Windows Explorer Startup Folder in Windows 7

  When you open Windows Explorer from the Taskbar in Windows 7, it defaults to the Libraries view. Today we take a look at changing the target path to allow you to customize which location opens by default. When you click on the Windows Explorer icon on the Windows 7 Taskbar, it’s set to open to the Libraries view by default. You might not use the Libraries feature, or want to set it to a different location that is more commonly used. Set Windows Explorer Startup Location To change the default startup location for the Windows Explorer Taskbar icon, if you have no Explorer screens open, hold down the Shift key, right-click the Explorer icon, and select Properties. Or if you have Windows open, right-click on the Explorer icon to bring up the Jumplist, then right-click on Windows Explorer and select Properties. Windows Explorer Properties opens up and you’ll want to click on the Shortcut tab so we can change the Target.   A common place you might want it to default to is your Documents folder. So to do that we need to enter the following into the Target field. %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,::{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}   Now when you open Windows Explorer from the Taskbar it defaults to My Documents… If you use the Start Menu to access Windows Explorer, open the Start Menu and go to All Programs \ Accessories and right-click on Windows Explorer then select Properties. Change the target path to where you want it to go. In this example we want Windows Explorer to open up to My Computer so we entered the following in the Target field. %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /E,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} When click on the Explorer icon in the Start Menu it defaults to My Computer… You can set it to open to various locations. • Is there an appropriate coding style for implementing an algorithm during an interview?

  I failed an interview question in C years ago about converting hex to decimal by not exploiting the ASCII table if (inputDigitByte > 9) hex = inputDigitByte - 'a'. The rise of Unicode has made this question pretty silly, but the point was that the interviewer valued raw execution speed above readability and error handling. They tell you to review algorithms textbooks to prepare for these interviews, yet these same textbooks tend to favor the implementation with the fewest lines of code, even if it has to rely on magic numbers (like "infinity") and a slower, more memory-intensive implementation (like a linked list instead of an array) to do that. I don't know what is right. Coding an algorithm within the space of an interview has at least 3 constraints: time to code, elegance/readability, and efficiency of execution. What trade-offs are appropriate for interview code? How much do you follow the textbook definition of an algorithm? Is it better to eliminate recursion, unroll loops, and use arrays for efficiency? Or is it better to use recursion and special values like "infinity" or Integer.MAX_VALUE to reduce the number of lines of code needed to write the algorithm? Interface: Make a very self-contained, bullet-proof interface, or sloppy and fast? On the one extreme, the array to be sorted might be a public static variable. On the other extreme, it might need to be passed to each method, allowing methods to be called individually from different threads for different purposes. Is it appropriate to use a linked-list data structure for items that are traversed in one direction vs. using arrays and doubling the size when the array is full? Implementing a singly-linked list during the interview is often much faster to code and easier remember for recursive algorithms like MergeSort. Thread safety - just document that it's unsafe, or say so verbally? How much should the interviewee be looking for opportunities for parallel processing? Is bit shifting appropriate? x / 2 or x >> 1 Polymorphism, type safety, and generics? Comments? Variable and method names: qs(a, p, q, r) vs: quickSort(theArray, minIdx, partIdx, maxIdx) How much should you use existing APIs? Obviously you can't use a java.util.HashMap to implement a hash-table, but what about using a java.util.List to accumulate your sorted results? Are there any guiding principals that would answer these and other questions, or is the guiding principal to ask the interviewer? Or maybe this should be the basis of a discussion while writing the code? If an interviewer can't or won't answer one of these questions, are there any tips for coaxing the information out of them?

  I am trying to install Pylucene (pylucene-3.3-3-src.tar.gz) on my ubuntu linux 11.10. I have python 2.7.2. I was able to compile JCC (I think) because I didnt see any error when I installed it. • Cannot Install JDK

  For the life of me, I can't install the JDK on Windows Vista. I keep getting the error, "This Software Has Already Been Installed on Your Computer. Would you like to reinstall it?" Problem is, it's evidently not on my computer, since I can't a) run Eclipse - I get "Could Not Find Java SE Runtime Environment" or b) Find any reference to Java from the command line when typing java -version - I get "Error opening registry key 'Registry/JavaSoft/Java Runtime Environment." Any ideas?

• NullPointerException when installing the Android SDK on Mac OS X

  I'm installing the Android SDK on Mac OS X. Following the instructions on the Android Development site, I've downloaded the SDK and modified my .bash_profile to include the path. The next step is to use the Android SDK and AVD Manager to actually download the platforms. However, when I use the Manager to install the platforms, I get the following error in the Terminal. I've looked around for similar problems in the Eclipse and Android forums and haven't found anything yet. Is something else damaged in the environment and needs to be repaired? Can anyone tell me how to automatically set <h:selectOneMenu (or any other component) with values depending on another <h:selectOneMenu if there empty elements with 'required' set to 'true' on the form? If to set <a4j:support event="onchange" reRender="anotherElement" immediate="true"/ then nothing is changed because changed value isn't set. But without immediate i always have message that this or that element cannot be empty.   I have windows XP professional installed on 1 hard drive and Ubuntu 10.10 on my second hard drive. On start up the computer completely skips the grub menu and boots straight into 10.10. I have tried running os-prober with the windows hard drive mounted and then updating grub but it didnt work. Any ideas? I have changed the boot order so that the HDD with xp on it is first however the computer still booted into linux. I tried running grub-install /dev/sda and got this /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Sector 32 is already in use by FlexNet; avoiding it. This software may cause boot or other problems in future. No error reported I checked using disk utility and the code for my xp hard drive is sdb so i ran the camand grub-install /dev/sdb shich gave me this Installation finished. No error reported. So i rebooted but it still didnt work. Any other ideas? • ILOG CPLEX: how to populate IloLPMatrix while using addGe to set up the model?

  I have a queatoin about IloLPMatrix and addGe. I was trying to follow the example of AdMIPex5.java to generate user defined cutting planes based on the solution to the LP relaxation. The difference is that eh initial MIP model is not read in from a mps file, but set up in the code using methods like addGe, addLe etc. I think this is why I ran into problems while copying the exampe to do the following. IloLPMatrix lp = (IloLPMatrix)cplex.LPMatrixIterator().next(); lp from the above line turns to be NULL. I am wondering 1. What is the relationship between IloLPMatrix and the addLe, addGe commands? I tried to addLPMatrix() to the model, and then used model.addGe methods. but the LPMatrix seems to be empty still. How do I populate the IloLPMatrix of the moel according to the value that I had set up using addGe and addLe. Is the a method to this easily, or do I have to set them up row by row myself? I was doing this to get the number of variables and their values by doing lp.getNumVars(). Is there other methods that I can use to get the number of variables and their values wihout doing these, since my system is set up by addLe, addGe etc? Thanks a lot for your help on this.

• Getting a NullPointerException at seemingly random intervals, not sure why

  I'm running an example from a Kinect library for Processing (http://www.shiffman.net/2010/11/14/kinect-and-processing/) and sometimes get a NullPointerException pointing to this line: int rawDepth = depth[offset]; The depth array is created in this line: int[] depth = kinect.getRawDepth(); I'm not exactly sure what a NullPointerException is, and much googling hasn't really helped. It seems odd to me that the code compiles 70% of the time and returns the error unpredictably. Could the hardware itself be affecting it? • How can I go through a Set in JSP? (Hibernate Associations)

  Hi All, So I am pretty new to JSP. I have tried this a few ways. Ways that would make sense in PHP or automagicy frameworks... I am probably thinking too much in fact... I have a hibernate one to many association. That is class x has many of class y. In class x's view.jsp. I would like to grab all of class y, where the foreign key of y matches the primary key of x and display them. It seems that hibernate properly puts this stuff into a set. Now, the question is how can I iterate through this set and then output it's contents... I am kind of stumped here. • How to iteratively generate k elements subsets from a set of size n in java?

  Hi, I'm working on a puzzle that involves analyzing all size k subsets and figuring out which one is optimal. I wrote a solution that works when the number of subsets is small, but it runs out of memory for larger problems. Now I'm trying to translate an iterative function written in python to java so that I can analyze each subset as it's created and get only the value that represents how optimized it is and not the entire set so that I won't run out of memory. • Try and catch error trapping. why is it so significant

  sorry if it sounds dumb ' as i am i a process of learnning java i try to understand , why on earth i should "try" a method to catch errors. it looks to me like the concept is:- ' letting a process run assuming its not properly developed. should i always assume that a program based on classes and inheritance is bound for unexpected errors, which i should handle with such a heavy tools like try catch throw throws ? should all java programs be included withing try catch framework?
