• Having issues with flickering output to TV from Windows 7 laptop

  I cannot tell why this is happening. I cannot get a pattern as to when it happens. Sometimes, I watch entire Hulu content without any interruptions. Other times, it happens 2-3 times in a span of 3 minutes. Then it stops for 10-15 minutes. Lenovo T410s Integrated graphics: Intel HD Graphics (Driver=8.15.10.2253, Video BIOS=2026.1) TV is a Zenith (does not happen with other laptop so doubt it's TV) TV connected to laptop using HDMI-to-DVI cable (previously was connected directly via DVI but I bought a new cable and it's still happening) Anyone could help me troubleshoot this? I'd greatly appreciate it. If you need more information, I'll be glad to provide it.

• PostgreSQL server: 10k RPM SAS or Intel 520 Series SSD drives?

  We will be expanding the storage for a PostgreSQL server and one of the things we are considering is using SSDs (Intel 520 Series) instead of rotating discs (10k RPM). Price per GB is comparable and we expect improved performance, however we are concerned about longevity since our database usage pattern is quite write-heavy. We are also concerned about data corruption in case of power failure (due to SSDs write cache not flushing properly). We currently use RAID10 with 4 active HDDs (10k 146GB) and 1 spare configured in the controller. It's a HP DL380 G6 server with P410 Smart Array Controller and BBWC. What makes more sense: upgrading the drives to 300GB 10k RPM or using Intel 520 Series SSDs (240GB)?

• Give WPF design mode default objects

  In my application I have <Rectangle.Margin> <MultiBinding Converter="{StaticResource XYPosToThicknessConverter}"> <Binding Path="XPos"/> <Binding Path="YPos"/> </MultiBinding> </Rectangle.Margin> The Data Context is set during runtime. The application works, but the design window in VS does not show a preview but System.InvalidCastException. • URL Encoding using C#

  I have an application which I've developed for a friend. It sends a POST request to the VB forum software and logs someone in (with out setting cookies or anything). Once the user is logged in I create a variable that creates a path on their local machine. c:\tempfolder\date\username The problem is that some usernames are throwing "Illegal chars" exception. For example if my username was mas|fenix it would throw an exception.. Path.Combine( _ Environment.GetFolderPath(System.Environment.SpecialFolder.CommonApplicationData), _ DateTime.Now.ToString("ddMMyyhhmm") + "-" + form1.username) I don't want to remove it from the string, but a folder with their username is created through FTP on a server. And this leads to my second question. If I am creating a folder on the server can I leave the "illegal chars" in? I only ask this because the server is Linux based, and I am not sure if Linux accepts it or not.. EDIT: It seems that URL encode is NOT what I want.. Here's what I want to do: old username = mas|fenix new username = mas%xxfenix Where %xx is the ASCII value or any other value that would easily identify the character.

• Wildcards not being substituted

Does anyone have an idea of why? Please note: If global expansion fails, the pattern is not substituted.   I have a classic ASP page - written in JScript - that's using Scripting.FileSystemObject to save files to a network share - and it's not working. ("Permission denied") The ASP page is running under IIS using Windows authentication, with impersonation enabled. If I run the following block of code locally via CScript.exe: var objNet = new ActiveXObject("WScript.Network"); WScript.Echo(objNet.ComputerName); WScript.Echo(objNet.UserName); WScript.Echo(objNet.UserDomain); var fso = new ActiveXObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject"); var path = "\\\\myserver\\my_share\\some_path"; if (fso.FolderExists(path)) { WScript.Echo("Yes"); } else { WScript.Echo("No"); } I get the (expected) output: MY_COMPUTER dylan.beattie MYDOMAIN Yes If I run the same code as part of a .ASP page, substituting Response.Write for WScript.Echo I get this output: MY_COMPUTER dylan.beattie MYDOMAIN No Now - my understanding is that the WScript.Network object will retrieve the current security credentials of the thread that's actually running the code. If this is correct - then why is the same user, on the same domain, getting different results from CScript.exe vs ASP? If my ASP code is running as dylan.beattie, then why can't I see the network share? And if it's not running as dylan.beattie, why does WScript.Network think it is?

• Search files for text matching format of a Unix directory

  I am attempting to search through all the files in a directory for text matching the pattern of any arbitrary directory. The output of this I hope to use to make a list of all directories referenced in the files (this part I think I can figure out on my own). I have looked at various regex resources and made my own expression that seems to work in the browser based tool but not with grep in the command line. /\w+[(/\w+)]+ My understanding so far is the above expression will look for the beginning / of a directory then look for an indeterminate number of characters before looking for a repeating block of the same thing. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

• IIS 7 URL rewrite rule

  Hello, guys! We have here to web servers behind a router - one IIS and one Tomcat (on different machines / IP addresses). The domain is pointing to out external IP, which is forwarded to IIS (internal IP 192.168.1.10 for example). I'm trying to do the following: when [www.]ourdomain.com is entered the default web site on IIS have to be loaded (this part is ok), but when test.ourdomain.com is entered I want to redirect this request to another web server (192.168.1.11 for example). I created a site "test" on IIS and it is displayed when test.ourdomain.com is entered. Then I tried to redirect it with following rule: Requested URL matches the pattern: * (using wildcards) Condition: {HTTP_HOST} matches test.ourdomain.com Action type: Rewrite Rewrite URL: http://192.168.1.11/{R:0} but when I try to load test.ourdomain.com now I get IIS's error 404 page. Obviously I'm wrong :-) How can I do such a redirect?

• Why would the IIS UrlRewrite module continue redirecting requests after the rule is removed?

  Our application uses the IIS UrlRewrite module to temporarily redirect requests during upgrades to a maintenance site. We have seen a few instances where even though the redirect rule has been removed, the server continues to redirect all requests according to the removed rule. There does not seem to be any pattern with this, and has only occurred once or twice. We have taken the following steps to try and determine the cause of this behavior. Verified that the original rule was a 307 temporary redirect Requested the application from machines that had never requested it before Used a different browser Added and removed a dummy rule from the IIS management console Checked the http kernel cache using netsh http show cachestate Modified the applicationHost.config file by hand (the rule was not still in the file, we just added a superfluous space) In the past when this has happened, we have been able to restart IIS and it solves the problem but that is not always an option and we really want to figure out what the root cause is. How or why would UrlRewrite be caching the response and not responding to configuration changes?

I believe it means you define intefaces first before you start implementing actual code, right? However, from my limited experience (3 OOP years now) I usually can't resist the urge to start coding pretty early, for several reasons: because my limited experience has shown me I am unable to predict what methods I will be needing in the interface, so I might as well start coding right away. or because I am simply too impatient to write out the whole interfaces first. or when I do try it, I still wind up implementing bits of code already, because I fear I might forget this or that imporant bit of code, that springs to mind when I am designing the interfaces. As you see, especially with the last two points, this leads to a very disorderly way of doing things. Tasks get mixed up. I should draw a clear line between designing interfaces and actual coding. If you, unlike me, are a good/disciplined planner, as intended above, how do you: ...know the majority of methods you will be needing up front so well? Especially if it's components that implement stuff you are not familiar with yet. ...resist the urge to start coding right away? ...deal with code that comes to mind when you are designing the interfaces? UPDATE: Thank you for the answers so far. Valuable insights! And... I stand corrected; it seems I misinterpreted the idea of Design By Contract. For clarity, what I actually meant was: "coming up with interface methods before implementing the actual components". An additional thing that came up in my mind is related to point 1): b) How do you know the majority of components you will be needing. How do you flesh out these things before you start actually coding? For arguments sake, let's say I'm a novice with the MVC pattern, and I wanted to implement such a component/architecture. A naive approach would be to think of: a front controller some abstract action controller some abstract view ... and be done with it, so to speak. But, being more familiar with the MVC pattern, I know now that it makes sense to also have: a request object a router a dispatcher a response object view helpers etc.. etc.. If you map this idea to some completely new component you want to develop, with which you have no experience yet; how do you come up with these sort of additional components without actually coding the thing, and stuble upon the ideas that way? How would you know up front how fine grained some components should be? Is this a matter of disciplining yourself to think it out thoroughly? Or is it a matter of being good at thinking in abstractions?

• Problems with zend-tool reporting that providers are not valid

  I have recently setup XAMPP 1.7.3 and ZendFramework 1.10.4 on a new computer and many of the commands that I normally use now fail. Here are the steps I used to setup and test ZF. First I added the ZF library folder (C:\xampp\php\ZendFramework-1.10.4\library) to the include path in php.ini. Then I added the ZF bin folder (C:\xampp\php\ZendFramework-1.10.4\bin) to my Path system variable. To test that everything is configured correctly I ran the command "zf show version" from the command line. The result is "Zend Framework Version: 1.9.6". Immediately something appears to be wrong. The file that is downloaded is "ZendFramework-1.10.4.zip" and the reported version is 1.9.6. I have re-downloaded the latest version (1.10.4) and removed old copy. Still the incorrect version number problem persisted. Having done some research there is a bug in the ZF knowledgebase that version 1.10.3 reports a wrong version number. So that may explain the version number problem. Moving forward I tried to run some zf-tool commands and certain commands reports that the action or provider is not valid. Example: C:\xampp\htdocs>zf create project test Creating project at C:/xampp/htdocs/test C:\xampp\htdocs>cd test C:\xampp\htdocs\test>zf create controller Test Creating a controller at C:\xampp\htdocs\test/application/controllers/TestController.php ...   Hello, I'm kind of new in web development with Java. I am developing a web service and I've chosen REST / Jersey for it. I want to init some stuff on startup of the service and to keep them all along the life of the service. First question : Is the constructor of the Jersey Servlet a good place to do that ? Basically, what I want to do is to load a config.ini file located in my WEB-INF directory. Following this help, I understand I need a ServletContext to load my file as a resource. However, it is not clear to me how to get this ServletContext in a Jersey Servlet, as it is not really an instance of a servlet, but rather a POJO with some annotations. I wanted to try this tip, but the attribute "context" is null in the constructor. I think that Jersey might populate it after the constructor. Right ? So how is the right way to do this ? • AVAudioPlayer making noise when playing multiple sounds at the same time

  I am having an issue where AVAudioPlayer is introducing noise into playback ONLY when I play multiple sound files at the same time. If I play them each individually, they all sound perfect. But, if I play sound clip B while sound clip A is still playing, the speakers start crackling like there is noise. I have tried both m4a files AND caf files and both make the same noise, so it has to be something with how I am implementing this method or a quirk with AVAudioPlayer. • Spaces and backslashes in Visual Studio build events

  I have an application that is supposed to aid my project in terms of pre- and post-build event handling. I'm using ndesk.options for command line argument parsing. Which gave me weird results when my project path contains spaces. I thought this was the fault of ndesk.options but I guess my own application is to blame. I call my application as a post-built event like so: build.exe --in="$(ProjectDir)" --out="c:\out\" A simple foreach over args[] displays the following: --in=c:\my project" --out=c:\out" What happened is that the last " in each parameter was treated as if it was escaped. Thus the trailing backslash was removed. And the whole thing is treated as a single argument. Now I thought I was being smart by simply escaping the first " as well, like so: build.exe --in=\"$(ProjectDir)" --out=\"c:\out\" In that case the resulting args[] look like this: --path="c:\my project" --out="c:\out" The trailing backslash in the parameters is still swallowed and the first parameter is now split up. Passing this args[] to ndesk.options will then yield wrong results. How should the right command line look so that the correct elements end up in the correct args[] slots? Alternatively, how is one supposed to parse command line arguments like these with or without ndesk.options? Any suggestion is welcome. Thanks in advance

• Replacing XML reserved characters in SQL Server 2005

  I'm working on a system that takes relational data from a sql server DB and uses SSIS to produce an XML extract using sql server 2005's 'FOR XML PATH' command and a schema. The problem lies with replacing the XML reserved characters. 'FOR XML PATH' is only replacing <, , and &, not ' and ", so I need a way of replacing these myself. I've tried pre-processing the fields in the database to replace XML reserved characters with their entitised equivalents (e.g. & becomes &amp;), but once these fields are used to construct XML using FOR XML the leading & is replaced with &amp;, so I end up with &amp;amp; where I should have &amp;. What I've tried so far is altering the element's contents after the XML has been constructed using XQuery inside SQL server like so: DECLARE @data VARCHAR(MAX) SET @data = CONVERT(VARCHAR(MAX), [my xml column].query(' data(/root/node_i_want)') SELECT @data = [function to replace quotes etc](@data) SET [my xml column].modify('replace value of (/root/node_i_want)[1] with sql:variable("@data")') but I get the same problem. Essentially, is there something wrong I'm doing with the above, or a way to tell FOR XML to entitise other characters, or something like that? Basically anything short of having to write a program to change the XML after it has been assembled in large batches and saved to files!
