• Problem with skipping empty cells while importing data from .xlsx file in asp.net c# application

  Hi to all. I have a problem with reading .xlsx files in asp.net mvc2.0 application, using c#. Problem occurs when reading empty cell from .xlsx file. My code simply skips this cell and reads the next one. • Techniques for querying a set of object in-memory in a Java application

  Hi All, We have a system which performs a 'coarse search' by invoking an interface on another system which returns a set of Java objects. Once we have received the search results I need to be able to further filter the resulting Java objects based on certain criteria describing the state of the attributes (e.g. from the initial objects return all objects where x.y z && a.b == c). The criteria used to filter the set of objects each time is partially user configurable, by this I mean that users will be able to select the values and ranges to match on but the attributes they can pick from will be a fixed set. The data sets are likely to contain <= 10,000 objects for each search. The search will be executed manually by the application user base probably no more than 2000 times a day (approx). It's probably worth mentioning that all the objects in the result set are known domain object classes which have Hibernate and JPA annotations describing their structure and relationship. Off the top of my head I can think of 3 ways of doing this: For each search persist the initial result set objects in our database, then use Hibernate to re-query them using the finer grained criteria. Use an in-memory Database (such as hsqldb?) to query and refine the initial result set. Write some custom code which iterates the initial result set and pulls out the desired records. Option 1 seems to involve a lot of toing and froing across a network to a physical Database (Oracle 10g) which might result in a lot of network and disk activity. It would also require the results from each search to be isolated from other result sets to ensure that different searches don't interfere with each other. Option 2 seems like a good idea in principle as it would allow me to do the finer query in memory and would not require the persistence of result data which would only be discarded after the search was complete. Gut feeling is that this could be pretty performant too but might result in larger memory overheads (which is fine as we can be pretty flexible on the amount of memory our JVM gets). Option 3 could be very performant but is something I would like to avoid as any code we write would require such careful testing that the time taken to acheive something flexible and robust enough would probably be prohibitive. I don't have time to prototype all 3 ideas so I am looking for comments people may have on the 3 options above, plus any further ideas I have not considered, to help me decide which idea might be most suitable. I'm currently leaning toward option 2 (in memory database) so would be keen to hear from people with experience of querying POJOs in memory too. Hopefully I have described the situation in enough detail but don't hesitate to ask if any further information is required to better understand the scenario. Cheers, Edd

I'm now trying to create an installer for this app so that: 1) The application will be placed in the applications folder 2) The application is added to the list of permissible apps in Mac Application Level Firewall Also, I have several example files I would like to include with this application - what is the best way to make these available to the user. • Has test driven development (TDD) actually benefited a real world project?

  I am not new to coding. I have been coding (seriously) for over 15 years now. I have always had some testing for my code. However, over the last few months I have been learning test driven design/development (TDD) using Ruby on Rails. So far, I'm not seeing the benefit. I see some benefit to writing tests for some things, but very few. And while I like the idea of writing the test first, I find I spend substantially more time trying to debug my tests to get them to say what I really mean than I do debugging actual code. This is probably because the test code is often substantially more complicated than the code it tests. I hope this is just inexperience with the available tools (RSpec in this case). I must say though, at this point, the level of frustration mixed with the disappointing lack of performance is beyond unacceptable. So far, the only value I'm seeing from TDD is a growing library of RSpec files that serve as templates for other projects/files. Which is not much more useful, maybe less useful, than the actual project code files. In reading the available literature, I notice that TDD seems to be a massive time sink up front, but pays off in the end. I'm just wondering, are there any real world examples? Does this massive frustration ever pay off in the real world? I really hope I did not miss this question somewhere else on here. I searched, but all the questions/answers are several years old at this point. It was a rare occasion when I found a developer who would say anything bad about TDD, which is why I have spent as much time on this as I have. However, I noticed that nobody seems to point to specific real-world examples. I did read one answer that said the guy debugging the code in 2011 would thank you for have a complete unit testing suite (I think that comment was made in 2008). So, I'm just wondering, after all these years, do we finally have any examples showing the payoff is real? Has anybody actually inherited or gone back to code that was designed/developed with TDD and has a complete set of unit tests and actually felt a payoff? Or did you find that you were spending so much time trying to figure out what the test was testing (and why it was important) that you just tossed out the whole mess and dug into the code?

• How to manage a Closed Source High-Risk Project?

  I am currently planning to develop a J2EE website and wish to bring in 1 developer and 1 web designer to assist me. The project is a financial app with a niche market. I plan to keep the source closed . However, I fear that my would-be employees could easily copy the codebase and use it /sell it to a third party especially when they switch jobs. The app development will take 4-6months and perhaps more and I may have to bring in people after the app goes live. How do I keep the source to myself. Are there techniques companies use to guard their source. I foresee disabling pendrives and dvd writers on my development machines, but uploading data or attaching the code in one's mail would still be possible. My question is incomplete. But programmers who have been in my situation, please advice. How should I go about this? Building a team, maintaining code-secrecy,etc. I am looking forward to sign a secrecy contract with the employees if needed too. (Please add relevant tags) Update Thank you for all the answers. I certainly won't be disabling all USB ports and DVD writers now. But I think I should be logging activity(How exactly should I do that?) I am wary of scalpers who would join and then run off with the existing code. I haven't met any, but I have been advised to be wary of them. I would include a secrecy clause, but given this is a startup with almost no funding and in a highly competitive business niche with bigger players in the field, I doubt I would be able to detect or pursue any scalpers. How do I hire people I trust, when I don't know them personally. Their resume will be helpful but otherwise trust will develop only with time. But finally even if they do run away with the code, it is service that matters after the sale is made. So I am not really worried for the long term.

• How can I trap errors for an application that is tightly coupled with IIS?

  We have an unsupported application that relies on IIS however intermittently brings out the website it is integrated with. I have looked at the logs and there is nothing in the logs to indicate what the issue could be as the logs only have GET verbs. I have also looked at the event viewer and there are no error logged in there either. The application runs off a Windows 2008 server. Is there a freely available application we can have running in the background that will listen to or is aware of the application running and traps the error when it crashes? The unsupported application is a bespoke implementation for which we don't have code for and the developer is no longer contactable.

  I'm planning a web application that will have its own server behind the corporate firewall. There will be two sets of users, internal and external to the organisation. Internal users will be located inside of the firewall as same as the application server and the external users are outside over the internet. All users will be authenticated via a login by the web application. I would like a setup where the external users will be required to access whole of the application using SSL and the internal users via standard http connection. I would like to know, if it is possible to setup a single instance the application so that it can be accessed via SSL for external (over the internet) users AND over http for internal users? Thanks

  I have a time management application that I use at home quite a lot and have running most of the time. At home, I have a desktop PC and a couple of laptops scattered around the house...all networked together. Unfortunately, the application I use is not multi-user and I risk losing/corrupting data if it has been left running on one computer inadvertently while I start using it on another one in another part of the house. I use Live Mesh to automatically keep the application's database synced across the different computers and I just need some way of making sure that I don't start using the application on another computer before closing it down on the previous one. Anyone know of any Windows software that can detect if an application is running simultaneously on different computers on my network, and warn me if I am about to have two open at the same time?

• What would cause ANY .NET application to crash immediately... except a project I create and Debug in

  My software recently got deployed to a customer who said that the application was crashing immediately after it started. After some initial debugging, the customer provided me remote access to one of the computers which was unable to run the application. I found that the crash wasn't specific to my application. Any application which depended on the .NET framework crashed immediately. Conveniently, Visual Studio 2008 was installed so I created a quick hello world application on it and clicked Debug. The application worked fine. But, then when I tried to execute the generated binaries in the /bin/Debug/HelloWorld.exe directory outside of visual studio it crashed. List of things i've tried (UPDATED): I checked that "Everyone" has Read&Execute permissions for c:\Windows. To test that the problem was with the .NET Framework (and not my application), I attempted to download Paint .NET on to the computers. The setup frontend crashed in the same manner. Performed a repair of the .NET framework as outlined in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908077 (Boy was this fun and time consuming). No luck. Installed .NET 3.5 SP1 (before it just had .NET 3.5) Note: my application targets 2.0 so I did this more as a long shot... but i learned in the process that .NET 3.5 SP1 also updates the underlying frameworks. Ran Aaron Stebner's .NET Setup Verification Tool. This tool indicated that .NET was successfully installed. (I forget if i checked all the versions but at least 2.0 worked). Tested some mini hello world applications which were targeted for .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.5 and both crashed in the same way. Tried launching .NET apps via windbg cmd line. Doing this did allow me invoke my simple hello world applications. So, simple .NET hello world works when invoked by windbg or by launching via debug in visual studio... but doesn't if i try to execute it standalone. I created a dump file using WinDbg. It wasn't all that revealing to me. • Error while deploying a web application in OSGI container using pax web

  Hello I am trying to deploy a web application in a Felix container. I have all the required configuration done with my web app like the setting up of the manifest headers: Webapp-Context: Bundle-ClassPath: Bundle-Activator: Import-Package: Bundle-SymbolicName: etc The Pax bundles that I have dropped in the same container are: pax-web-service-0.6.0.jar pax-web-jsp-0.7.1.jar pax-web-extender-war-0.7.1.jar pax-logging-service-1.5.0.jar pax-logging-api-1.5.0.jar Though it had been written in the pax web site that pax-web-service is included in pax-war-extender, it seems without pax-web-service bundle, all other bundles become handicapped. I had removed the other pax bundles like pax-web-extender-whiteboard-0.7.1.jar pax-web-jetty-0.7.1.jar, as I have not seen any usefulness of those. The pax-web-jetty-0.7.1.jar even does not get start up. it has dependencies which it could not be able to resolve from any one of the bundle provided by PAX. I also want to be able to create 2 different set of roles in my site - which can both have access to the same pages - but will see different things on the page.   I've got a bit of a problem. I have a Kohana application that has dynamically added fields. The fields that are added are called DISA numbers. In the model I look these up and the result is returned as an array. I encode the array into a JSON string and use JQuery to populate them The View knows the length of the array and so creates as many DISA elements as required before display. See the code below for a summary of how that works. What I'm finding is that this is starting to get difficult to manage. The code is becoming messy. Error handling of this type of dynamic content is ending up being spread all over the place. Not only that, it doesn't work how I want. What you see here is just a small snippet of code. For error handling I am using the validation library. I started by using add_rules on all the fields that come back in the post. As they are always phone numbers I set a required rule (when it's there) and a digit rule on the validation-as_array() keys. That works. The difficulty is actually giving it back to the view. i.e. dynamically added javascript field. Submits back to form. Save contents into a session. View has to load up fields from database + those from the previous post and signal the fields that have problems. It's all quite messy and I'm getting this code spread through both the view the controller and the model. So my question is. Have you done this before in Kohana and how have you handled it? There must be an easier way right? • RSA encryption/ Decryption in a client server application

  Hi guys, probably missing something very straight forward on this, but please forgive me, I'm very naive! Have a client server application where the client identifies its self with an RSA encrypted username & password. Unfortunately I'm getting a "bad padding exception: data must start with zero" when i try to decrypt with the public key on the client side. I'm fairly sure the key is correct as I have tested encrypting with public key then decrypting with private key on the client side with no problems at all. Just seems when I transfer it over the connection it messses it up somehow?! Using PrintWriter & BufferedReader on the sockets if thats of importance. EncodeBASE64 & DecodeBASE64 encode byte[] to 64base and vice versa respectively. Any ideas guys?? error at build time, and a day of google searching has turned up other instances of this error caused by different triggers, and solutions for those propblems didn't work for me. I also found a single report on the Oracle forums that seemed to be a carbon copy of this issue, but there were no replies. The application is written in Weblogic Workshop 10, runs on Weblogic Server 10.3, and uses Beehive / NetUI. Not sure if that would make a difference or not though. The build scripts were automatically generated by Weblogic Workshop, with some tweaks and fixes made to other aspects of the files by myself to fix other compatability issues. I am using Java 1.6.0_23 from Sun, and Ant 1.8.1 Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Upgrading VSIX extensions from VS2012 to VS2013

Failing which, it will not be possible for your consumers to install and use your extensions on Visual Studio 2013.   Objective In this blog post, I’ll show you how simple it is to upgrade your Visual Studio 2012 extension to Visual Studio 2013. There aren’t any reported breaking changes between VS 2012 SDK and VS 2013 SDK, the upgrade usually involves, rebuilding the extension against VS 2013 SDK and updating the vsix manifest file.              Walkthrough Download the Visual Studio 2013 SDK - You will need to download the Visual Studio 2013 SDK in order to open up the Visual Studio extension project in Visual Studio 2013. The SDK can be downloaded from here. Install the SDK before you proceed.                2. Once the VS 2013 SDK has been installed, open up your package project. For the purposes of this blog post, I’ll open up the Avanade Extension – Software Inventory in Visual Studio 2013. You will notice that Visual Studio doesn’t load the project but let’s you know that the project needs to be Migrated.                  3. Right click the project and choose the option ‘Reload Project’ from the Context Menu.                  4. Choosing the Reload Project option brings up an upgrade window, telling you that the upgrade is a one way only upgrade i.e. the project will be changed to work with Visual Studio 2013 and you will not be able to open the project up in Visual Studio 2012. My recommendation would be to create a Visual Studio 2013 branch and upgrading the project in that branch only, so if you need to go back to Visual Studio 2012 project at some point, you have a handy reference in a separate branch.             5. Upon clicking Ok, the project is updated. See below, the following changes are made at the time of upgrade,           - The runtime version is updated in the Resources.Designer.cs file                      - The Minimum version of Visual Studio in the package project file is changed from 11.0 to 12.0                    6. Reference VS 2013 dll’s rather than VS 2012 dll’s. So reference Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Client.dll and Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Controls.dll from C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0\Common7\IDE\ReferenceAssemblies\v2.0 and C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0\Common7\IDE\ReferenceAssemblies\v4.5. If you have any other API references, then change the references to point to VS 2013 instead of VS 2012.                          7. Rebuild your solution to ensure there are no breaking changes. Success!                8. Update VSIX Manifest file (the file source.extnsion.vsixmanifest contains the meta data for your VSIX).          - Update the Install Targets from 11.0 to 12.0. This basically enforces that the extension can be installed on Visual Studio 2013 version of Visual Studio.                         - Update the Dependencies from Visual Studio MPF 11.0 to Visual Studio MPF 12.0              9. Rebuild the solution and open up the bin folder for the Package project and look for the file *.vsix file [Microsoft Visual Studio Extension].         - This is basically the installer for your extension.                 - Double click the installer to launch the installer wizard. Viola! You can see the package installation wizard opens up and gives you the option to install the extension for Visual Studio 2013.                    - Click Install to Continue                    - Note – If you run into the exception “23/06/2013 10:42:18 - Install Error : Microsoft.VisualStudio.ExtensionManager.InstallByMsiException: The InstalledByMSI element in extension Avanade Extensions cannot be 'true' when installing an extension through the Extensions and Updates Installer.  The element can only be 'true' when an MSI lays down the extension manifest file.” Ensure you have the option “This VSIX is installed by Windows Installer” unchecked in the Install Targets tab.        10. Verifying that the extension has installed correctly.           - Open Extension Manager and verify that the installed extension shows up in the extension manager “list of installed VSIX”.                      11. First Look at the updated Extension                         - The links have now been moved to the context menu, so to see the navigation links, you’ll have to right click on the icon and select the option from the context menu.                                        Note – The Avanade Extension being used in the demo has been developed by Utkarsh and Tarun. The Software Inventory Extension for Visual Studio 2012…  allows you to see the list of Software installed on the hosted build server right from with in Visual Studio,  the extension also allows you to export this list to excel.
