• Can't install Windows 7 on Acer Aspire M1100

  When I install Windows 7, everything goes smooth but as soon as it's done and Windows needs to reboot for the last time before getting the desktop, the computer stucks to Verify DMI Pool Data............. and then, nothing. I change the CMOS battery, I tried so many setup in BIOS, even load default settings... Nothing worked. The HDD light is not flickering anymore, no HDD activity. CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work. It's just impossible to load Windows 7. I tried Windows XP and this works fine. I also tried the Acer (Futureshop) recovery CD and I get an Hexademical error message stating the install cannot continue. Is there a BIOS flash apps somewhere or a fix I can apply to have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my computer. Any takers?

• Cisco VPN Client connects but unable to ping or RDP

  I'm a developer and don't have much networking expertise, so bare with me. I'm using the Cisco VPN Client 5.0.02.0090 to connect to my work's VPN that way I can RDP into my work computer. Once connected, I can't ping anything on the local network once connected to the VPN thus I am unable to access my work's network. This used to work about two weeks ago but abruptly stopped working today. However, I have the Cisco VPN Client installed on my laptop and I am able to ping and RDP into my work computer from there. Both my desktop and laptop computers are connected to the same router at home. I have tried the following so far: Rebooted my computer Reinstalled VPN client Updated NIC drivers Disabled firewall Opened up ports 500, 4500, and 10000 Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• Wubi and Vista 64 bits can't work

  First of all, I have posted this issue at Ubuntu Forum without success yet. Hello, I have downloaded "kubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso" and I have mounted it on my Windows Vista 64 bits Ultimate. Because of which now 120 days free try period is ticking. Since only administrator is going to access this server remotely we need to have 'Remote control for administrators' licensing mode (like windows 2003) on it. How we can change licensing mode from 'per user/device' to 'Remote control for administrators' on 2008 server? Also will it be possible to do this change remotely using RDC session itself? or do i need to change it using physical console (if remote access is gonna be disabled during switch)?

• How to migrate from Natara DayNotez for Pocket PC / Windows Mobile

  I've been using DayNotez as my notes manager since the old Palm PDA days. When I moved to Windows Mobile, I installed DayNotez there and migrated from the Palm version. Now I wish to move from DayNotez altogether (I currently consider Evernote as a decent cross-platform tool). Problem is, DayNotez doesn't let me export the notes (unless I want to transfer them one by one, which is a pain). Natara offers an export tool for Windows, but it only works for Palm HotSync (as it reads from the backed-up PDB file). DayNotez Desktop for Windows stores its local DB under "My Documents\Natara\DayNotez\" directory in a file named "[device name] DayNotez.dnz". Quick look within the file spots a string "Standard Jet DB" near the beginning, but I couldn't open it as a regular JET/MDB file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• HP SmartArray P400 has slow read and write speed

  I have desktop in which I installed HP SmartArray P400 controller with two HP DF0146B8052 hard drives. I made RAID0 logical volume from them, but I am getting 20MB/s write speed and ~140-120MB/s read speed. Also there is quite low scatter for benchmark results (I am getting quite nice line) and it looks like controller is "capping" my speeds. I tried reseting controllers configuration and I haven't found any settings in HP ACU (Array Configuration Utility) to help me. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and M4A78 board Does anyone have ideas what could be wrong? Also I am attaching diagnostic results.

  Hi, I'm debugging an API I'm building using netcat to send raw HTTP requests. The thing is that Apache closes the connection after 10 seconds, giving me very little time to type. I know that I could pipe a file to nc, or use any other workaround, but I'd like it to work as it's supposed to. The Timeout directive in apache2.conf is at its default of 300 seconds, KeetAliveTimeout at 15 seconds. Where could this 10 second timeout possibly be defined? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop.   I wasn't experienced any problems before installing kb980408 for Windows 7 x86. The update made it impossible for me to log into my computer after displaying a "Setting up personalized settings for Windows Desktop Update" message, after killing that task a "Windows Explorer is not responding - Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" message appears, then it waits forever... If I killed that task, I was not able to continue the boot process, if I ran explore.exe manually, the same thing happens. The solution, by the way, was to boot into safe mode and use the add/remove program in the control panel to uninstall this wretched piece of code. Start-up repair and/or the use of system restore will not help you, you need to uninstall.

  I'm looking for some linux software to manage and control a dual monitor/multi screen setup for use in professional-like presentations (ie: monitor1=control, monitor2=projector/audience). I have the dual-monitor configured with my gnome desktop running over both monitors (that's the easy part). What I'm looking for is a neat/seamless way to switch between, say, OpenOffice Impress, DVD Player, VLC live video, Lyricue, other software on monitor2. To have monitor2 shown to the audience and run neat presentations of DVDs, Slideshows, etc. whilst controlling it from monitor1. I can run slideshows, play a DVD on monitor2 (drag & drop VLC on monitor2, and go fullscreen) etc. but this is rather messy in a presentation environment. I found this software: Screen Monkey.   I have been running into some issues when opening Excel files from Internet Explorer, generally the first document or two will open fine but after that trying to open a file will cause Excel and Internet Explorer to crash to the desktop without any notifications being given. This doesn't happen for users who are running Excel 2007, but for users with Excel 2003 it may or may not happen to them. The files in question are Excel XML files and Internet Explorer 6 and Excel 2003 are being use. At this time it would not be possible to upgrade Internet Explorer, but it would be able to upgrade to Excel to version 2007 if that would resolve the issue. Overdue Update: We recently upgraded to Firefox at the office which has rendered this error a non-issue; however, it is still unresolved from the standpoint that we haven't been able to come up with an explanation to the issue. Since IE6 is still installed on the systems, a fix to the problem (or explanation of why it's happening) would be appreciated.

  I'm having diffculties configuring 20 new Dell Vostro minis here. I set up one of them with my preferred OS, applications and settings, especially the Visual Effects Settings of Windows XP. I set them to best performance and deactivated everything else in the box. I copied this profile to Default User Profile and did sysprep -mini -reseal. After capturing this image and deploying it again, the desktop settings are correct except the visual effects settings. fading and everything else is reenabled for each new user which is created on the system. How do I preserve my settings from being overwritten by sysprep? thanks!

  Hi All, Quick question - I run two linux boxes, one my own desktop and the other my VPS. For security reasons on the VPS end I opted for socket connections to MySQL (/var/run/mysqld/mysql.sock). I know I can tunnel like this: ssh -L 3307:127.0.0.1:3306 [email protected] if I set up the remote sql server to listen on some port, but what I want to know is can I do something like: ssh -L /path/to/myremotesqlserver.sock:/var/run/mysqld/mysql.sock thereby tunnelling two sockets, as opposed to two ports? A perfectly acceptable solution would also be to forward a local port to the remote socket file, but where possible I'm trying not to have tcp servers running on the remote box.   Here's the laptop It wouldn't be hardcore gaming, mostly things like the new Deus Ex game, Mirror's Edge, Portal 2, etc... I need to replace my current, broken, laptop and I thought this would be a good opportunity to get to play some of these games. My current laptop is really only lacking in its graphics card. (Intel series 4 chipset) If this laptop isn't good enough, I would really appreciate suggestions. I won't be able to get a desktop, otherwise I would, and I can't spend more than $1000 dollars on my new laptop.

• Cannot access Ubuntu 10/04 after reinstalling Windows

  I had Windows Vista Home Premium on HP pavilion desktop. I partitioned the disk for Ubuntu and a swap disk partition and then I installed Ubuntu 10.04. When I would start my computer, I would be given a choice to start Windows or Ubuntu. Today I reinstalled Windows, and now the menu has disappeared. I don't see in windows the disk partition that I allocated to Ubuntu, so it means Ubuntu still exist but I can't load it. What can I do ?

• Windows 7 Not Recognizing Any Hardware, Linux Recognizing Hardware

  I have a new desktop computer with two SSDs: one running Linux Mint 15 (SSD1), the other running Windows 7 (SSD2). My mint runs perfectly - USB wireless adapter is recognized, SSD2 (connected by SATA) is recognized and accessible through the filesystem, Ethernet works, etc. However, my Windows 7 is not recognizing any of these devices - even plugging in a regular ethernet cable doesn't work. It seems that it's not recognizing any network adapters, and it also doesn't recognize SSD1, connected to the mainboard by SATA. I've installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled Windows multiple times, but the problem persists. I used the Windows 7 CD to install Windows on a machine previously, and that time around, I didn't have any problems, which leads me to suspect that this might be a hardware issue, specifically with the mainboard. My mainboard is an MSI-7641 model, the 760GM-P34 FX. It uses an AMD Chipset and an AMD processor. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, and how to fix it?

  Hello, I have two keyboard languages, Swedish and Amerikan English. Normally, I switch language by hitting [alt]+[shift] and it works like a charm. However, suddenly Microsoft Outlook has started to hang whenever I try to switch keyboard input language. Whenever i hit [alt]+[shift] or use the menu to switch language Outlook will hang indefinitely not responding. Why? and what can I do about it? I have English Windows 2000 and Outlook 2003 with the Google Search Desktop plugin.

• Unlock file on Windows Server 2003 without rebooting

  We've several Windows Server 2003 machines running, each with its own purposes. There are scheduled jobs which synchronizes some files over SFTP using WinSCP. Very sometimes a newly copied file is left locked in the "inbox" folder without any reason. The machine's own background task (programmed in Java) can't move it to the "processed" folder anymore after processing it. Manually moving it only yields the well known error message Cannot move [filename]: it is being used by another person or program. The only resort is to reboot the machine, but we would of course like to avoid that. Any suggestions? I tried Unlocker which works fine locally at WinXP, but doesn't work at those Win2K3 machines by remote desktop (unlock option doesn't show up in rightclick context menu).
