• What are my tool options to prototype a 2D multiplayer game?

  I'm looking for the best tool to allow me to quickly put together a 2D game that relies largely on networking. It's extremely likely that this game will require a server side program to constantly run. I have little experience with these things and since it's a prototype i'd like the easiest options for achieving this. I am looking to make this game for the web and mobile devices, although at present I only have access to ios hardware, (no android etc). I just want to get the bare bones of this set up so I can test it from the earliest opportunity to see if it's fun.

• SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. • What software is responsible for connecting to the wireless net specified in /etc/network/interfaces?

  I'm curious what software (package, utility in bin's) handle interface parameters in /etc/network/interfaces and decides to connect to the specified wireless net. I use wifi usb stick dlink DWL-110 attached to wlan0 with ndiswrapper driver. Sometimes wlan0 sees my wifi net - iwlist wlan0 scan shows it, but does not connect to it - iwconfig shows AP Not-Associated, until I replug the stick. Neither reinserting module with ndiswrapper, not ifdown/ifup or restarting networking helps. That is why I need to know what OS entity handles connection/reconnection to wireless net. EDIT: shame on me, I use wireless-tool package with wep encryption

• Twitter Customer Sentiment Analysis

  The breakable toy that I am currently working on is a twitter customer sentiment analyser. It scrapes twitter for tweets relating to a particular organisation, applies a machine learning algorithm to determine if the content of tweet is positive or negative, and generates reports of the sentiment data over time, correlated to dates, events and news feeds. I’m having lots of fun building this, but I would also like to learn if there is a market for quantified sentiment data. So that I can start to show people what I have in mind I have created a mockup of the simplest and most important report. It shows customer sentiment over time, with important events highlighted. As the user moves their mouse to the right (forward in time) the source data area scrolls up to display the tweets from that time. The tweets are colour coded based on sentiment rating. After I started working on this project I discovered that a team of students have already built something similar. It is a lot of fun to enter your employers name and see what it says.

• Reboot to fail safe mode when root file system is full

  I have a system running on a 4GB Nandrive. When the drive is full, Ubuntu will not boot :( and I have to plug in a rescue thumbdrive to delete files. The problem is the hardware is not easily accessible except via network. Is there a sure-fire way to boot Ubuntu, say, to RAM or other means when the disk is full or on any other errors in the normal boot process? In other words, is there a fallback rescue boot mode with networking? Thanks for any advice.

  A great new feature in VirtualBox 4.0 is the ability to use NAT networking and forward ports without needing to use ssh -L/-R tricks.  This is great for booting multiple VM domains simultaneously.  It is possible to have several instances which map back to the host machine and different ports on localhost:* automatically forward to the correct VM.  This avoids the hassle of setting up dns entries or static IP addresses.In this example, I'm mapping the host ports 3xxxx to the VM's well known server ports.Note: It is important to setup the Frontend HTTP host/port to avoid incorrect URL rewriting.You may also need to setup an http channel to deal with local traffic which uses the network address 10.0.2.15Happy VMing.

• What is the traditional way to maintain extensibility in a database-driven application like this?

  I'm working on a simple application for a game in Java that allows a user to record whether they have collected a given item and how much experience it contains. This will work for multiple item types (weapons, armor) and each will have its own tab with a list of all items that qualify under it. Making changes as new types are added is not such a big deal (if a clothing slot is added, for instance), but new items are added to the game all the time in biweekly patches, and I'm not sure what the traditional/customary way to make sure the application is user-extensible without requiring me to would be. Whether that would be adding a configuration menu that allows users to add news items (new rows to the local SQLite database) or a text file with something similar, but I'm certain there's a well-accepted way to do this that I'm not aware of. I'm new to databases and ignorant of the solution, so what's the professional/futureproof way to do this?

This unreleased phone could be the next version of Google Nexus phone. Google few days ago reduced price of Nexus 4 smartphones by $100 and 8 GB version is reported out of inventory. With all these signs it seems to be clear that it is just weeks away for the launch of Google Nexus smartphone. Soon after the news of leaked smartphone spread on blogs, Google pulled Kitkat launch video to private. You don’t need to be a speaker to attend.  However the call for speakers is open until June 28th (hint, hint).  Locals and out-of-towners are all welcome.
