  • Shadow maps unable to properly project shadows in some situations?

    In the shadow map sample provided by Microsoft I've noticed an issue where shadows are not properly projected when thin geometry is projected at high angles, see here the shadows being projected, notice the poles from the lights are not projected: http://imgur.com/QwOBa.png And in this screenshot we see things from the lights perspective, not ethe poles are clearly visible: http://imgur.com/k2woZ.png So two questions really, is this an actual bug or a limitation with shadow mapping and if it's a bug how can I fix it? The source is directly from the Microsoft DirectX Sample Browser 'ShadowMap' sample from July 2004, the sample browser is the latest August 2009 one.

  • File listing with ActiveX

    I need to program a simple Windows Explorer that only lists all files inside a folder recursively. The only solution I found up to now is using an ActiveX controller. So, I installed Visual Studio 2010, but I don't know really how to use it to make an ActiveX. I tried to create a Class Library then add a Explorer module. It compiles, but I don't know what to do now. Is there an easier way to do this or am I missing something ?

  • IE 8 Chinese encoding characters

    Hello, I am unable to render Chinese characters in IE 8. I have researched this and I am aware of the meta tag to force compatibility mode. I am also aware of the language pack you can install. Finally I have seen that Microsoft actually forces IE7 compatibility mode on their Chinese website. http://www.microsoft.com/zh/cn/default.aspx I am wondering if anyone has any alternatives solutions to this problem. None them seem that appealing to me. I am using utf8 as my encoding and this problem only occurs in IE8. Thanks

  • how to combine changes tracked from several documents

    I tried to search the solution in internet, but found nothing, is there anyone who can help me? For my application, there is one document (Microsoft word), and this document is reviewed by several people in the "Track changes" mode, so the input to my application is the original document and the reviewed documents with changes (like insert/delete/comments). By this link , I know how to extract all the changes from the reviewed documents. what i want is to combine all the changes from all the reviewed documents into ONE document, and make all the changes "accepted", so the output of my application is one modified Microsoft document with all the changes (delete/insert/comment) accepted. My problem is that I don't know how to combine the changes from several documents into one single document. Anyone has an idea how to do this? Thank you very much in advance.

  • Save information from MS crash reporter?

    On Windows XP when a process crashes, we get a dialog box with a link: "To view technical information about the error report, click here." The "click here" link brings up a whole lot of information in a window, but no obvious way to save it to a file. Is there a way? It would be very nice to be able to send that data to several different external vendors we're working with. The only other option I see in the dialog box is to send it to Microsoft, but this crash is likely not Microsoft's fault and there is no reason to send it to them.

  • Installing Visual Studio Team Foundation Server Service Pack 1

    As has become customary when the product team releases a new patch, SP or version I like to document the install. Although I had no errors on my main computer, my netbook did have problems. Although I am not ready to call it a Service Pack problem just yet! Update 2011-03-10 – Running the Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 install a second time worked As per Brian's post I am installing the Team Foundation Server Service Pack first and indeed as this is a single server local deployment I need to install both. If I only install one it will leave the other product broken. This however does not affect you if you are running Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server on separate computers as is normal in a production deployment. Main workhorse I will be installing the service pack first on my main computer as I want to actually use it here. Figure: My main workhorse I will also be installing this on my netbook which is obviously of significantly lower spec, but I will do that one after. Although, as always I had my fingers crossed, I was not really worried. Figure: KB2182621 Compared to Visual Studio there are not really a lot of components to update. Figure: TFS 2010 and SQL 2008 are the main things to update There is no “web” installer for the Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack, but that is ok as most people will be installing it on a production server and will want to have everything local. I would have liked a Web installer, but the added complexity for the product team is not work the capability for a 500mb patch. Figure: There is currently no way to roll SP1 and RTM together Figure: No problems with the file verification, phew Figure: Although the install took a while, it progressed smoothly   Figure: I always like a success screen Well, as far as the install is concerned everything is OK, but what about TFS? Can I still connect and can I still administer it. Figure: Service Pack 1 is reflected correctly in the Administration Console I am confident that there are no major problems with TFS on my system and that it has been updated to SP1. I can do all of the things that I used before with ease, and with the new features detailed by Brian I think I will be happy. Netbook The great god Murphy has stuck, and my poor wee laptop spat the Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 out so fast it hit me on the back of the head. Figure: Error log for Team Foundation Server 2010 install shows a failure As there is really no information in this log as to why the installation failed so I checked the event log on that box. Figure: There are hundreds of errors and it actually looks like there are more problems than a failed Service Pack I am going to just run it again and see if it was because the netbook was slow to catch on to the update. Hears hoping, but even if it fails, I would question the installation of Windows (PDC laptop original install) before I question the Service Pack Figure: Second run through was successful I don’t know if the laptop was just slow, or what… Did you get this error? If you did I will push this to the product team as a problem, but unless more people have this sort of error, I will just look to write this off as a corrupted install of Windows and reinstall.

  • Keeping up with Technology

    If you're like me, you have a hard time keeping up with all the technologies out there. The reality is there's too many new technologies (languages, methodologies,  tools, etc). One of the ways I try to keep up with everything is by using good ol' RSS feeds in conjunction with Google Reader. Google Reader is both an online aggregator of RSS feeds, and it also has a good companion app on Google Android. The nicest part of Google Reader for me is the "All Listings" view which gives me a reverse chronological view of ALL articles (mixed together) regardless of the actual RSS feed.  This way, I get to see the newest articles first.     Maybe it’s just me, but with some of the MS Products being released in 2010 with "2010" in their product name, is the naming of the SQL Server product suite being released with product name that doesn’t make sense, our latest SQL Server Release which is now just about to be released is "SQL Server 2008 R2" My question is do you think this product name is ? Good, Bad or just plain confusing IMHO I think we could have been better placed if this was named "SQL Server 2010"...(read more)

  • eBay Leads Mobile Commerce

    For the first time, more smartphones where shipped than PCs. This important milestone helps reinforce that retailers need a strong mobile commerce strategy. IDC reported that for the 4th quarter of 2010, manufacturers shipped 100.9 million devices versus 92.1 million PCs shipped. One early adopter for the retail industry is eBay, the popular online auction and shopping site. In July 2008 they released their first mobile app and have increased investments ever since. In 2002 they bought PayPal for use with its online channel, but its becoming a force in the mobile world as well. In June 2010 they acquired RedLaser, the popular barcode scanning mobile app. Both pieces of technology enhance the mobile experience, and are available to other retailers as well. More recently, in December 2010 they acquired Critical Path Software, the developer of their eBay, StubHub, and Shopping.com mobile applications. Taking their mobile development in-house was a clear signal that mobile commerce is important to their strategy. Pop on over the eBay Inc's mobile commerce stats page to see just how well they are doing. You can use the animated map to see where people are using the app on any given day, and you can compare sales of the different categories. eBay's hottest category is Cars & Trucks, garnering 16.5% of the total $2B (yes, billion) in mobile sales in 2010. To understand why that category is so large, let's look at the top 10 most expensive cars sold on eBay mobile in 2010: $240,001 Mercedes-Benz: SLR McLaren $209,888 Lamborghini: Gallardo $208,500 Ferrari: 430 $199,900 Lamborghini: Gallardo $189,000 Lamborghini: Murcielago $185,000 Ferrari: 430 $175,000 Porsche: 911 $170,000 Ferrari: 550 $160,000 Bentley: Continental, GT $159,900 Lamborghini: Gallardo eBay claims they sell 3-4 Ferraris on their mobile app each month. Yes, mobile commerce is not limited to small items. While I would wait to get home and fire up the PC, the current generation that has grown up with mobile phones has no issue satisfying their impulses. Dave Sikora of Digby told me he's seen people buy furniture sets, mattresses, and diamonds via their mobile phones. I guess mobile commerce is rapidly becoming the norm.

If youre certain the account has the necessary permissions, but youre still getting the error, the problem may be that the account has never logged into the build server.  In this case, there wont be any entry in the HKCU hive in the registry, which the system is checking for permissions (see this thread).  The solution in this case is quite simple: log into the machine (once is enough) with the build server account.  Then, open Visual Studio (thanks Brendan for the answer in this thread). Summary Make sure the build service account has the necessary database permissions Make sure the account has logged into the server so it has the necessary registry hive info Make sure the account has run Visual Studio at least once so its settings are established In my case I went through all 3 of these steps before I resolved the problem.   • Windows CE: Newsgroups Shutdown

    As of June 1, 2010 many of the Windows CE newsgroups have been shut down by Microsoft, and the rest will be shut down by October 1, 2010.  This is part of an overall Microsoft strategy to move community from newsgroups to web based forums. The newsgroups have been indexed by Google, so the existing content can and should be searched for answers using http://groups.google.com/advanced_search Microsoft has replaced the newsgroups with http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsembeddedcompact which has forums for OS Development, Managed Application Development and Native Application Development. Note that with the planned release for Q4 2010, Microsoft is renaming Windows Embedded CE to Windows Embedded Compact.  This name change is reflected in the forum naming.   • Debugging .NET 2.0 assembly from unmanaged code in VS2010?

    I’ve run into a serious snag trying to debug a .NET 2.0 assembly that is called from unmanaged code in Visual Studio 2010. I maintain a host of components that using COM interop and custom .NET runtime hosting and ever since installing Visual Studio 2010 I’ve been utterly blocked by VS 2010’s inability to apparently debug .NET 2.0 assemblies when launching through unmanaged code. Here’s what I’m actually doing (simplified scenario to demonstrate): I have a .NET 2.0 assembly that is compiled for COM Interop Compile project with .NET 2.0 target and register for COM Interop Set a breakpoint in the .NET component in one of the class methods Instantiate the .NET component via COM interop and call method The result is that the COM call works fine but the debugger never triggers on the breakpoint. If I now take that same assembly and target it at .NET 4.0 without any other changes everything works as expected – the breakpoint set in the assembly project triggers just fine. The easy answer to this problem seems to be “Just switch to .NET 4.0” but unfortunately the application and the way the runtime is actually hosted has a few complications. Specifically the runtime hosting uses .NET 2.0 hosting and apparently the only reliable way to host the .NET 4.0 runtime is to use the new hosting APIs that are provided only with .NET 4.0 (which all by itself is lame, lame, lame as once again the promise of backwards compatibility is broken once again by .NET). So for the moment I need to continue using the .NET 2.0 hosting APIs due to application requirements. I’ve been searching high and low and experimenting back and forth, posted a few questions on the MSDN forums but haven’t gotten any hints on what might be causing the apparent failure of Visual Studio 2010 to debug my .NET 2.0 assembly properly when called from un-managed code. Incidentally debugging .NET 2.0 targeted assemblies works fine when running with a managed startup application – it seems the issue is specific to the unmanaged code starting up. My particular issue is with custom runtime hosting which at first I thought was the problem. But the same issue manifests when using COM Interop against a .NET 2.0 assembly, so the hosting is probably not the issue.   • Is Openness at the heart of the EU Digital Agenda?

    At OpenForum Europe Summit 2010, to be held in Brussels, Autoworld, 11 Parc du Cinquantenaire on Thursday 10 June 2010, a number of global speakers will discuss whether it indeed provides an open digital market as a catalyst for economic growth and if it will deliver a truly open e-government and digital citizenship (see Summit 2010). In 2008, OpenForum Europe, a not-for-profit champion of openness through open standards, hosted one of the most cited speeches by Neelie Kroes, then Commissioner of Competition. Her forward-looking speech on openness and interoperability as a way to improve the competitiveness of ICT markets set the EU on a path to eradicate lock-in forever. On the two-year anniversary of that event, Vice President Kroes, now the first-ever Commissioner of the Digital Agenda, is set to outline her plans for delivering on that vision. Much excitement surrounds open standards, given that Kroes is a staunch believer. The EU's Digital Agenda promises IT standardization reform in Europe and vows to recognize global standards development organizations (fora/consortia) by 2010. However, she avoided the term "open standards" in her new strategy. Markets are, of course, asking why she is keeping her cards tight on this crucial issue. Following her speech, Professor Yochai Benkler, award-winning author of "The Wealth of Networks", and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, appointed by the UK Government to work alongside Sir Tim Berners-Lee to help transform public access to UK Government information join dozens of speakers in the quest to analyse, entertain and challenge European IT policy, people, and documents. Speakers at OFE Summit 2010 include David Drummond, Senior VP Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer, Google; Michael Karasick, VP Technology and Strategy, IBM; Don Deutsch, Vice President, Standards Strategy and Architecture for Oracle Corp; Thomas Vinje, Partner Clifford Chance; Jerry Fishenden, Director, Centre for Policy Research, and Rishab Ghosh, head, collaborative creativity group, UNU-MERIT, Maastricht (see speakers). Will openness stay at the heart of EU Digital Agenda? Only time will show.
