Should a new programmer nowadays start with C/C++ or OOP language? [closed]

I've been a programmer for 15+ years. In my time, we all started with C or C++ and then moved to C# or Java. At that time it was a usual practice. Now, my brother wants to follow my steps and I am not sure what advice to give him. So, I am asking the community for an opinion. Should nowadays new programmer with zero programming knowledge start with functional languages (C, C++, etc.) or he should start directly with OOP languages (Java, C#, etc.)? The reply should be considered in the context of my brother's future assignments. He will mainly work on Java mobile applications as well as ASP.NET web apps. He will have to touch with desktop apps, low level programming, drivers, etc. This is the reason I am not sure if he should ever need to learn functional languages.

Calling software modules (Java, Perl, etc.) from R

I've recently started using R for Natural Language Processing tasks and find that a lot of applications are available in Java and Perl (for my purposes). For example: A few perl modules are available to find distance measures between words by querying Wordnet. I am aware of the R Wordnet package, but it does not perform the tasks that these CPAN modules do. Many Java packages for NLP are out there, which I'd like to use from within R. I know of rJava, RSPerl, the simple system command amongst others, but I'd like more examples of how I could make calls to Java and Perl applications from R. Recently I tried capturing console output from a perl script. cat( 'print "Hello World\n";',file="hello.pl" ) system(command="c:\Perl64\bin\perl hello.pl") system(command=paste(Sys.getenv("COMSPEC"),"/c","C:\Perl64\bin\perl hello.pl")) None of the above system commands showed 'Hello World' on the R console. I've used "system" before to run perl scripts to perform tasks without wanting to capture console output. I have been a C++,Qt programmer for the last 3.5 years and have hit a plateau in terms of doing something new. Work has been repetitive and routine. I personally believe it is time to move on but off late I am getting more offers in mobile development like Android,Iphone etc. The latest offer I have is for objective-C based profile. I do not have the slightest idea about objective-C apart from that it is Object oriented C resembling C++ but not exactly a clone. Questions in my mind are --what are the pros/cons of this careers switch or for any such switch? --Is it good for one's career to change domains after sometime? --How difficult it is to get back to one's previous area of proficiency? I currently run a Wedding Car website that is ranking in the top 5 for my local area, its not doing so well outside of that. I have listed the company in Google Business so it shows in the SERP and I have a Facebook and Twitter account linked, that I update regularly. I know keeping content fresh is important but nothing much changes so I am unsure what options I have? Should I create a blog and talk about the cars, weddings etc? I am totally unsure where to go with this website, the site currently has a few images and a small amount of text. Things I am considering, but would like advice on: A Mobile version of the website A Blog on the website A gallery page with pictures and descriptions Asking local companies to link to my website Essentially I have a small business website but not much content, because really there isnt! What information do you capture when your software crashes in the field?

I am working on rewriting my unexpected error handling process, and I would like to ask the community: What information do you capture both automatic, and manually, when software you have written crashes? Right now, I capture a few items, some of which are: Automatic: Name of app that crashed Version of app that crashed Stack trace Operating System version RAM used by the application Number of processors Screen shot: (Only on non-public applications) User name and contact information (from Active Directory) Manual: What context is the user in (i.e.: what company, tech support call number, RA number, etc...) When did the user expect to happen? (Typical response: "Not to crash”) Steps to reproduce. What other bits of information do you capture that helps you discover the true cause of an applications problem, especially given that most users simply mash the keyboard when asked to tell you what happened. For the record I’m using C#, WPF and .NET version 4, but I don’t necessarily want to limit myself to those. so I have been learning java from Deitel's learn java 9th edition. I am up to GUI's and a have a pretty good grasp on OOP etc. I want to go straight to the mobile app development scene, I believe I will learn a fair bit there on using API's, and other tools to develop apps. I am not sure weather I should carry on with PC coding (GUI's etc etc) or skip it all and go direct to learning the Android SDK. So, should I carry on, learn about sockets, writing and reading files, GUI's for PC etc or get a book and jump into android? Thanks a lot guys.

NetworkManager doesn't detect my broadband device

I have a Huawei K3765 (USB ID 12D1:1520) and I'm trying to use it with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. I have usb-modeswitch installed, so when I plug the device I can see that it gets switched from storage-mode to modem-mode. My problem is that when I try to create a broadband mobile connection for it, NetworkManager doesn't detect the modem... I tried this on two different laptops. /var/log/daemon.log doesn't show anything of interest, AFAIKT... What could I try?

Alternatives to Java bytecode instrumentation

I'm starting a project that will have to instrument java applications for coverage purposes (definition-usage of variables, etc). It has to add trace statements and some logic to the application and maybe remove statements. I have searched for ways of instrument Java code and what I always find is about bytecode instrumentation. My question is: It's the only way to instrument Java applications? There is any other way to do that? What are the advantages of bytecode instrumentation over the others? I'll probably use the bytecode solution, but I want to know what are the problems with the other approaches (if any) to decide precisely. Thanks!

We are using Geolocation (getCurrentPosition()) in a website to determine a users position when using our site from a mobile device. I want to write an article explaining how the user can obtain the best results. Am I correct in assuming: Enabling GPS will yield the best result when in rural areas (less buildings to obscure line of sight to the satelites) Enabling Wi-Fi will yield the best results when in urban areas (generally more Wi-Fi hotspots available) Is it true that Android phones have better results from silently harvesting Wi-Fi hotspot details? In the past, I've developed more on the server side, so no big GUI/graphic programming topics have crossed my way so far. I'm switching a little bit to the mobile plattforms (iOS, android) and would like to gather more info on the visual/graphic side. Using the SDK controls/widgets isn't that challenging and I would love to get deeper into the view/presentation layer. Animations, drawing itself, probably OpenGL. Any books that would take me a little deeper in understanding how drawing actually works would be helpful.

infer half vector length in BRDF

it's my first question on stack. Is it possible to infer length of the half angle vector for specular lighting from N·L and N·V without the whole view and light vectors? I may be completely off-track, but I have this gut feeling it's possible... Why? I'm working on a skin shader and I'm already doing one texture lookup with N·L+N·E and one texture lookup for specular with N·H+N·V. The latter one can be transformed into N·L+N·E lookup if only I had the half vector length. Doing so could simplify the shader a bit and move some operations into the pre-computed lookup texture. It would make a huge difference since I'm trying to squeeze as much functionality as possible to a single pass mobile version so instruction count matters. Thanks.

There are two web-applications deployed on a glassfish server. Both web applications provide a REST web service. the access to both web-services is secured via glassfish security constraints (at the moment BASIC Auth and file-realm). Let's say a user is accessing the service of web application A. After he is authorized, service A wants to call service B via REST client. Is there a way for a service to impersonate a user that is already authorized to the glasfish server? Maybe something like forwarding the security context or editing the headers? SSPI Errors for SQL Server Authentication?!

We have several old ASP and PHP web applications which use SQL Server Authentication. Periodically, all the applications lose the ability to connect to our SQL Server 2000 database server, getting access denied. Corresponding to roughly the same times, we are getting 1115 Cannot generate SSPI Context SQLSTATE HY000 errors on the SQLServer 2000 server. And here's the weird part - rebooting the web server fixes the problem. Rebooting the database server has no effect. This makes no sense to me - I didn't think SSPI was in any way involved with SQL Server Authentication. Any ideas? Edit: Some additional details: The web server is in the DMZ. The hosts file on the web server has an entry for the database server (and the ip address is correct), so the web server (theoretically at least) shouldn't even be going to DNS to connect to the database server. It does not appear to be a firewall issue.

Is there such a thing as a dektop application event aggregator, similar to that used in Prism?

The event aggregator in Prism is great, and allows loosely coupled communication between modules within a composite application. Does such a thing exist that allows the same thing to happen between standalone applications running on a user's desktop? I could imagine developing a solution that uses WCF with TCP binding and running inside Windows Process Activation Service. Client applications could subscribe or publish events to this service as required and it would ensure all other listeners get notified of events as appropriate. Using TCP would enable event messages to be pushed out to clients without the need for polling, ensuring messages are delivered very quickly. I can't help but think though that such a thing would already exist... Is anyone aware of something like this, or have any advice on how it may be best implemented?
