  • Suggestions for designing large-scale Java webapp from the group up

    - by Chris Thompson
Hi all, I'm about to start developing a large-scale system and I'm struggling with which direction to proceed. I've done plenty of Java web apps before and I have plenty of experience with servlet containers and GWT and some experience with Spring. The problem is most of my webapps have been thrown together just to be a proof of concept and what I'm struggling with is what set of frameworks to use. I need to have both a browser based application as well as a web service designed to support access from mobile devices (Android and iPhone for now). Ideally, I'd like to design this system in such a way that I don't end up rewriting all of my servlets for each client (browser and phone) although I don't mind having some small checks in there to properly format the data. In addition, although I'm the only developer now, that won't necessarily be the case down the road and I'd like to design something that scales well both with regards to traffic and number of developers (isn't just a nightmare to maintain). So where I am now is planning on using GWT to design the browser-based interface but I'm struggling with how to reuse that code with to present the interface (most likely xml) for the mobile devices. Using GWT RPC would, I think, make it relatively easy to do all of the AJAX in the browser, but might make generating xml for the mobile phones difficult. In addition, I like the idea of using something like Hibernate for persistence and Spring Security to secure the whole thing. Again, I'm not sure how well those will cooperate with GWT (I think Hibernate should be fine...) There's obviously a lot more to this than I've presented here, but I've tried to give you the 5-minute overview. I'm a bit stumped and was wondering if anybody in the community had any experience starting from this place. Does what I'm trying to do make sense? Is it realistic? I have no doubt I can make all of these frameworks speak the same language, I'm just wondering if it's worth my time to fight with them. Also, am I missing a framework that would be really beneficial? Thanks in advance and sorry for the relatively broad question... Chris

  • Debugging web app on the palm pre?

    - by sold
I have a web app that works fine on desktop browsers, but struggles on the palm pre browser (via the emulator). How do I debug the app on the palm pre browser? There doesn't seem to be any error console, dom inspector, etc... I'd expect such tools from a web-app oriented phone.

  • Android broswer crushes on Ajax calls, when viewport meta tag is defined

    - by Eran
I am building a web app, which is intended to run on the Android browser. When I have a webpage that contains any kind of viewport meta tag, like this: <meta name="viewport" content="width=400"/> My webpage crushes on ajax calls. It happens when using the emulator, the actual browser on my nexus one, and on a droid (all running Android 2.1). Without the meta tag, the ajax calls run as they should. Any ideas?

  • Creating a variable list Pashua, OS X & Bash.

    - by S1syphus
First of all, for those that don't know pashua is a tool for creating native Aqua dialog windows. An example of what a window config looks like is # pashua_run() # Define what the dialog should be like # Take a look at Pashua's Readme file for more info on the syntax conf=" # Set transparency: 0 is transparent, 1 is opaque *.transparency=0.95 # Set window title *.title = Introducing Pashua # Introductory text tb.type = text tb.default = "HELLO WORLD" tb.height = 276 tb.width = 310 tb.x = 340 tb.y = 44 if [ -e "$icon" ] then # Display Pashua's icon conf="$conf img.type = image img.x = 530 img.y = 255 img.path = $icon" fi if [ -e "$bgimg" ] then # Display background image conf="$conf bg.type = image bg.x = 30 bg.y = 2 bg.path = $bgimg" fi pashua_run "$conf" echo " tb = $tb" The problem is, Pashua can't really get output from stdout, but it can get arguments. Following on from what Dennis Williamson posted here. What ideally it should do is generate an output file based on information from a text file, To executed in pashua_run ore add the pashua_run around the window argument: count=1 while read -r i do echo "AB${count}.type = openbrowser" echo "AB${count}.label = Choose a master playlist file" echo "AB${count}.width=310" echo "AB${count}.tooltip = Blabla filesystem browser" echo "some text with a line from the file: $i" (( count++ )) done < TEST.txt >> long.txt SO the output is AB1.type = openbrowser AB1.label = Choose a master playlist file AB1.width=310 AB1.tooltip = Blabla filesystem browser some text with a line from the file: foo AB2.type = openbrowser AB2.label = Choose a master playlist file AB2.width=310 AB2.tooltip = Blabla filesystem browser some text with a line from the file: bar AB3.type = openbrowser AB3.label = Choose a master playlist file AB3.width=310 AB3.tooltip = Blabla filesystem browser some text with a line from the file: dev AB4.type = openbrowser AB4.label = Choose a master playlist file AB4.width=310 AB4.tooltip = Blabla filesystem random So if there is a clever way to get the output of that and place it into pashua run would be cool, on the fly: I.E load te contents of TEST.txt and generate the place it into pashua_run, I've tried using cat and opening the file... but because it's in Pashua_run it doesn't work, is there a smart way to break out then back in? Or the second way which I was thinking, was create get the output then append it into the middle text file containing the pashua runtime, then execute it, maybe slightly hacky, but I would imagine it will do the job. Any ideas? ++ I know I probably could make my life a lot easier, by doing this in actionscript and cocoa, although at present don't have time for such a learning curve, although I do plan to get round to it.

  • Google Maps: marker icons are multi over same location, why?

    - by JakiT
I'm using Google Maps and have the map set to height/width=100%. I noticed that when I resize the browser window, my map marker icons appear to redraw on top of the same location. Meaning, if I should only have 1 map marker icon on "987 Main St", when I resize the browser window - multiple map marker icons are being now draw on top of "987 Main St" that shouldn't be there. Any ideas why this is happening and how to prevent it? UPDATE: Link to actual code

  • Firefox extension object instantiating

    - by Michael
I want my javascript object to be initialized just once, so each new browser window will not create new data items, new functions, etc... usually we initialize the code at the end of main javascript using load window.addEventListener("load", main.onLoad, false); so once the second browser window opened, the initialization code will start from scratch. However, I would like to re-use the existing object on consequent browsers. Any mechanism that I can use?

  • css3 rotate alternative

    - by JCHASE11
I am using the CSS3 rule, "rotate" to rotate a div containing text. You can see the page here: http://vitaminjdesign.com/v2/socialmedia.html. I am looking for cross browser support for rotating the div; however, this CS3 rule won't work on IE. Is there a jquery option or another javascript solution that will yield the same result, with cross browser compatibility?

  • ASP.NET MVC BaseController to dynamically set MasterPage file

    - by rockinthesixstring
I've built a Base Controller that all of my Controllers inherit from, and I've got it setup so that it checks the browser type and returns the appropriate MasterPageFile on the fly. I'm wondering if this is an efficient way to do this or if I should optimize it another way. Public Class BaseController : Inherits System.Web.Mvc.Controller Protected Overrides Function View(ByVal viewName As String, ByVal masterName As String, ByVal model As Object) As System.Web.Mvc.ViewResult If Request.Browser.IsMobileDevice Then Return MyBase.View(viewName, "Mobile", model) Else Return MyBase.View(viewName, "Site", model) End If End Function End Class

  • What are the differences between currently executing .NET thread and Win32 thread

    - by Ybbest
I am reading the Asp.net security documentation on msdn.I come across these tow terms and get really confused. # WindowsIdentity = WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent() which returns the identity of the security context of the currently executing Win32 thread. # Thread = Thread.CurrentPrincipal which returns the principal of the currently executing .NET thread which rides on top of the Win32 thread.

  • Unique element ID, even if element doesn't have one

    - by Robert J. Walker
I'm writing a GreaseMonkey script where I'm iterating through a bunch of elements. For each element, I need a string ID that I can use to reference that element later. The element itself doesn't have an id attribute, and I can't modify the original document to give it one (although I can make DOM changes in my script). I can't store the references in my script because when I need them, the GreaseMonkey script itself will have gone out of scope. Is there some way to get at an "internal" ID that the browser uses, for example? A Firefox-only solution is fine; a cross-browser solution that could be applied in other scenarios would be awesome. Edit: If the GreaseMonkey script is out of scope, how are you referencing the elements later? They GreaseMonkey script is adding events to DOM objects. I can't store the references in an array or some other similar mechanism because when the event fires, the array will be gone because the GreaseMonkey script will have gone out of scope. So the event needs some way to know about the element reference that the script had when the event was attached. And the element in question is not the one to which it is attached. Can't you just use a custom property on the element? Yes, but the problem is on the lookup. I'd have to resort to iterating through all the elements looking for the one that has that custom property set to the desired id. That would work, sure, but in large documents it could be very time consuming. I'm looking for something where the browser can do the lookup grunt work. Wait, can you or can you not modify the document? I can't modify the source document, but I can make DOM changes in the script. I'll clarify in the question. Can you not use closures? Closuses did turn out to work, although I initially thought they wouldn't. See my later post. It sounds like the answer to the question: "Is there some internal browser ID I could use?" is "No."

  • What privileges do I need?

    - by IAbstract
I have a Windows service that isn't writing to the Application Event log under UserAccount. When the service is set to use AdminAccount, the Security log reports the following attributes: Under UserAccount, the only privilege reported is SeImpersonatePrivilege. Is there a security impersonation that I can implement to give the UserAccount the ability to write to the Application Event log? I would prefer to use the UserAccount for this service rather than the AdminAccount.

  • Crash firefox using Javascript

I'm part of a testing team and have been tasked with "behaving badly" using javascript in a firefox browser. I've tried these methods to take the browser down http://www.yuki-onna.co.uk/browserdeath.html but none of them do anything worse than cause a popup asking to shut down the script. Any other ideas?

  • How to create a static header that remains even when navigating to other pages (lala.com)

    - by user169867
I'm interested in the way lala.com works. They have a header that remains fixed at the top of the browser and they have a flash music player in it. You can click on other links in the site and they are displayed below the header but the header is not disrupted and can continue playing music. If the target is a modern browser say IE8 & FF 3.6, what's the best way to achieve this? Thanks for any help.

  • AccessControlException: access denied - caller function failed to load properties file

    - by Michael Mao
Hi all: I am having a jar archive environment which is gonna call my class in a folder like this: java -jar "emarket.jar" ../tournament 100 My compiled class is deployed into the ../tournament folder, this command runs well. After I changed my code to load a properties file, it gets the following exception message: Exception in thread "main" java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.io.FilePermission agent.properties read) at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkRead(Unknown Source) at java.io.FileInputStream.<init>(Unknown Source) at java.io.FileInputStream.<init>(Unknown Source) at Agent10479475.getPropertiesFromConfigFile(Agent10479475.java:110) at Agent10479475.<init>(Agent10479475.java:100) at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(Unknown Source) at sun.reflect.DelegatingConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(Unknown Source) at java.lang.reflect.Constructor.newInstance(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Class.newInstance0(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Class.newInstance(Unknown Source) at emarket.client.EmarketSandbox.instantiateClientObjects(EmarketSandbox.java:92) at emarket.client.EmarketSandbox.<init>(EmarketSandbox.java:27) at emarket.client.EmarketSandbox.main(EmarketSandbox.java:166) I am wondering why this security checking will fail. I issue the getPropertitiesFromConfigFile() function inside my class's default constructor, like this: public class Agent10479475 extends AbstractClientAgent { //default constructor public Agent10479475() { //set all properties to their default values in constructor FT_THRESHOLD = 400; FT_THRESHOLD_MARGIN = 50; printOut("Now loading properties from a config file...", ""); getPropertiesFromConfigFile(); printOut("Finished loading",""); } private void getPropertiesFromConfigFile() { Properties props = new Properties(); try { props.load(new FileInputStream("agent.properties")); FT_THRESHOLD = Long.parseLong(props.getProperty("FT_THRESHOLD")); FT_THRESHOLD_MARGIN = Long.parseLong(props.getProperty("FT_THRESHOLD_MARGIN ")); } catch(java.io.FileNotFoundException fnfex) { printOut("CANNOT FIND PROPERTIES FILE :", fnfex); } catch(java.io.IOException ioex) { printOut("IOEXCEPTION OCCURED :", ioex); } } } My class is loading its own .properties file under the same folder. why would the Java environment complains about such a denial of access? Must I config the emarket.client.EmarketSandbox class, which is not written by me and stored inside the emarket.jar, to access my agent.properties file? Any hints or suggestions is much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

  • Is Pharo just a repackaging/rebranding of Squeak?

    - by number5
I'm trying to learn some Smalltalk. Fisrt found was Squeak, but since it has been removed from Gentoo ebuild tree because of security problem, so I decided to find an alternative. Then I found Pharo through Seaside project, after I downloaded Pharo 1.0 package, there are actually a SqueakVM inside! So, my question is: Is Pharo just a repackaging/rebranding of Squeak? And are those security problem of Squeak (bundle unsecure libs) still applied to Pharo? Thanks!

Hi, The iPhone has a functionality that when a google maps URL is typed into (or linked) the mobile browser it will open the Google Maps app instead of displaying it in the mobile browser. Now I'm wondering if that same functionality exists for say a Nokia (Symbian) phone? Is there a way to set up the link to open the Google maps app on the Symbian phone?
