  • master-slave-slave replication: master will become bottleneck for writes

    hi, the mysql database has arround 2TB of data. i have a master-slave-slave replication running. the application that uses the database does read (SELECT) queries just on one of the 2 slaves and write (DELETE/INSERT/UPDATE) queries on the master. the application does way more reads, than writes. if we have a problem with the read (SELECT) queries, we can just add another slave database and tell the application, that there is another salve. so it scales well... Currently, the master is running arround 40% disk io due to the writes. So i'm thinking about how to scale the the database in the future. Because one day the master will be overloaded. What could be a solution there? maybe mysql cluster? if so, are there any pitfalls or limitations in switching the database to ndb? thanks a lot in advance... :)

  • Colored blocks on boot

    When my laptop tries to boot right after POST I see colored blocks with flashing symbols in them. I am able to boot from windows PE cd. Tried fixboot and fixmbr with no success. I have also tried replacing boot files (ntldr, io.sys etc..) and removing video card drivers from windows\system32\drivers. The drive is seagate 2.5 ATA 160GB and has one NTFS partition on it. I have already fixed this issue by reformating the drive and reinstalling everything but after couple of weeks I get the same issue again. The diagnostics software shows no bad sectors on it and virus scan didn't find anything. Does anybody have an idea what this might be? UPDATE: tried defragmenting the hard drive just in case, but still no luck

    I'm used to rolling my own kernels for servers, as it nicely minimizes the number of exploits (and the resulting patches) to take care of. In a traditional (bare metal) world, the whole process is about knowing what you have (hardware), and what you need (Ethernet, IPv4, iptables, etc.) In a virtualized environment, some things stay the same (still need Ethernet and IPv4), some things go away (power management), and then there are some new needs (vxnet3, or vmware-tools, even though that's compiled outside of the kernel). So my question mostly concerns itself with the last two categories: what can I remove completely, and what new stuff do I want? For example, what IO scheduler do I want, if all my disk operations are going through another filesystem/scheduler/cache to get to the virtual disk? Do I need hyper-threading enabled, or is the VM going to show them to me anyway as a CPU anyway? Do I need Large Receive Offload turned on, or is that something that the hypervisor's network drivers are going to do for me?

But perhaps too general and feature-rich... multiple inheritance, operator overloading, manual memory management, templates, smart pointers, virtual destructors, legacy frameworks (think MFC), and I could just go on. Is there any one feature / aspect of C++ that you would like taken away, to make our lives easier as C++ developers? One feature per answer, please.

  • Twitter 2 for Android crash every time I try uploading multi photos [closed]

    Hello, I'm using the new Twitter 2 on Android 2.1. Whenever I hit the button which enables me to upload multiple photos in a single tweet, I always get the error "The application Camera (process com.sonyericsson.camera) has stopped unexpectidly. Please try again". However, uploading a single photo using the camera button in Twitter have no problem, it works. My phone is Sony Ericsson x10 mini pro. I tried signing out and back in, same result. Anything I can do to fix this?     What are my best options for creating a financial open-high-low-close (OHLC) chart in a high level language like Ruby or Python?     Why is the ( ) mandatory in the SQL statement select * from gifts INNER JOIN sentgifts using (giftID); ? The ( ) usually is for specifying grouping of something. But in this case, are we supposed to be able to use 2 or more field names... in the example above, it can be all clear that it is 1 field, is it just that the parser is not made to bypass the ( ) when it is all clear? (such as in the language Ruby).
