• Inheritance of list-style-type property in Firefox (bug in Firebug?)

  Let's have a look at some comments on a page generated by Wordpress (it's not a site I maintain, I'm just wondering what's going on here). As these pages might disappear in the near future, I've put some screenshots online. Here's what I saw: Obviously, the list-item markers shouldn't be there. So I decided to look at the source using Firebug. As you can see, Firebug claims that the list-style property (containing none) is inherited from ol.commentlist. But if that's the case, why are the circle and the square visible? When checking the computed style, Firebug shows the list-style-types correctly. What's the correct behaviour? I just did a quick check in Chromium, whose Web Inspector gave a better view of reality (the list item markers were also displayed in this browser): According to WebKit, list-style of ol.commentlist isn't inherited, only the default value of list-style-type from the rendering engine. So, we may conclude that the output of both browsers is correct and that Firefox (Firebug) shows an incorrect representation of inherited styles. What does the CSS specification say? Inheritance will transfer the list-style values from OL and UL elements to LI elements. This is the recommended way to specify list style information. Not much about the inheritance of ol properties to uls. Is Firebug wrong in this respect? BTW, I managed to let the markers disappear by just changing line 312 of style.css to ol.commentlist, li.commentlist, ul.children { When also explicitly defining the list-style of ul.children to none, the markers are not painted. You can have a look at screenshots of Firebug and WebKit's Web Inspector in this case, if you like.

  Hi, I am developing an application which let users to hear songs online. And I used Blackberry Player and Manager APIs. My application works fine and I can play songs. Now I wan't to add more controls to it. As an example I want pause, play songs. Mute the sound, Control the volume. Display the progress of the play back. Display the current time position of the song like that. I started research on that. And I tried to do that with PlayerListener. But unfortunately all the time I am getting IllegalStateException. So I can't go ahead with that research. As a help can someone please tell me how can I implement above kind of controls for a player. Appreciate if someone can post a sample code to do that. • window.location.href not working in Safari when using onkeypress

  I'm using an asp textbox and a search button. In Safari if I click the search button i get redirected to the search results page using javascript window.location.href. But strangely the same javascript will not redirect to the page if I press return in the textbox. Using the alert function I can see that window.location.href has the the correct url and the location bar at the top changes from the search page(default.aspx) to the search results url however when I click OK to the alert box the url at the top reverts back to the default.aspx page. It works on ie7/8/firefox/chrome but not safari. • SharePoint Designer Workflow: Unruly 'Collect User Data' Action

  I'm a student in a SharePoint class online. This problem has riddled everyone I've discussed it with, including the teacher. There seems to be some sort of problem when I create a workflow with the collect data action. I can create workflows that send e-mails and use the other actions just fine. What could be causing this problem? My reproduction steps are simple: Create a new Site Collection with the Blank Site template. Create a new Custom List. In SharePoint Designer, start a new workflow on the Custom List. Add the collect data action to the workflow. Set the user to the one that created the task. Set the data to anything. A single check box, a string, Choice, doesn't matter. Leave the output variable as default. Mystery error appears! When the Check Workflow button is pressed, nothing happens. No message box appears at all. The warning icon in the Steps panel merely points out that there are some errors, it isn't specific as to what they are. Additionally, when I click on the data object again after it's been created, it doesn't populate the form with the old values. It goes back to the default name with no fields. So there's definitely something going wrong here. I've narrowed the problem down to the data object, but I don't know what to do about it. The workflow acts like normal for other activities. For example, delete the Collect Data action and add a Send Email one instead and it compiles and runs successfully.

• Fast sign in C++ float...are there any platform dependencies in this code?

  Searching online, I have found the following routine for calculating the sign of a float in IEEE format. • TranslateTransform for drag and drop in Silverlight

  We're trying to implement drag and drop in Silverlight (3). We want users to be able to drag elements from a treeview onto another part of a UI. The parent element is a Grid, and we've been trying to use a TranslateTransform along with the MouseLeftButtonDown, MouseMove (etc) events, as recommended by various online examples. The drag start is correctly initiated, but the item we are dragging appears in the 'wrong' location (offset a few hundred pixels to the right and down from the cursor) and I can't for the life of me work out why. • Web form is not updating tables, why?

  I have a web application and on page is an update page to update some profile information. Below is the code I am using to update the table. But I think it is wrong. Does anything stick out? The connection string works cause it is used to read the database to get the profile information, I just removed it due to it containing password/login info for the db. player is the class of properties that contains player information and ds is the dataset, but I would like to update the database itself online... • LINQ to SQL and DataPager

  I'm using LINQ to SQL to search a fairly large database and am unsure of the best approach to perform paging with a DataPager. I am aware of the Skip() and Take() methods and have those working properly. However, I'm unable to use the count of the results for the datapager, as they will always be the page size as determined in the Take() method. For example: var result = (from c in db.Customers where c.FirstName == "JimBob" select c).Skip(0).Take(10); This query will always return 10 or fewer results, even if there are 1000 JimBobs. As a result, the DataPager will always think there's a single page, and users aren't able to navigate across the entire result set. I've seen one online article where the author just wrote another query to get the total count and called that. Something like: int resultCount = (from c in db.Customers where c.FirstName == "JimBob" select c).Count(); and used that value for the DataPager. But I'd really rather not have to copy and paste every query into a separate call where I want to page the results for obvious reasons. Is there an easier way to do this that can be reused across multiple queries? Thanks.

• Understanding Hibernate saveOrUpdate

  The books that I've read regarding hibernate are, at best, reference tomes. They very seldom have good code examples, so I tend to use online resources for those needs. However, I've always had a problem understanding the basic idea of hibernate persistence. I've read the books and understand the concepts, but in practice, I often see results that I don't understand. Perhaps you all can help, as you have in the past. Let's look at a simple example of a dog and a cat that are friends. This isn't a rare occurrence. It also has the benefit of being much more interesting than my business case. We want a function called "saveFriends" that takes a dog name and a cat name. We'll save the Dog and then the Cat. For this example to work, the cat is going to have a reference back to the dog. I understand this isn't an ideal example, but it's cute and works for our purposes. • Dot Matrix printing in C# ?

  I'm trying to print to Dot Matrix printers (various models) out of C#, currently I'm using Win32 API (you can find alot of examples online) calls to send escape codes directly to the printer out of my C# application. This works great, but... My problem is because I'm generating the escape codes and not relying on the windows print system the printouts can't be sent to any "normal" printers or to things like PDF print drivers. (This is now causing a problem as we're trying to use the application on a 2008 Terminal Server using Easy Print [Which is XPS based]) The question is: How can I print formatted documents (invoices on pre-printed stationary) to Dot Matrix printers (Epson, Oki and Panasonic... various models) out of C# not using direct printing, escape codes etc. **Just to clarify, I'm trying things like GDI+ (System.Drawing.Printing) but the problem is that its very hard, to get things to line up like the old code did. (The old code sent the characters direct to the printer bypassing the windows driver.) Any suggestions how things could be improved so that they could use GDI+ but still line up like the old code did?

  I am working with a mmorpg (Eve Online) request that returns xml. I am using httparty for the request and I am trying to use nokogiri to obtain attribute values for a specific element. I have read about xpath and from what I understand if I do the following it should return all rows: doc.xpath('row') however it does not return anything. Here's what I have so far: options = {:keyID => 111111, :vCode => 'fddfdfdfdf'} response = HTTParty.post('https://api.eveonline.com/char/WalletJournal.xml.aspx', :body => options) doc = Nokogiri::XML(response.body) doc.xpath('row').each do |r| end The loop is never executed. What am I doing wrong? I need to return all row elements and gain access to each of the row's attributes. Thanks.

• Can someone copyright an SQL query?

  I work for a school district. Every year we have to export a list of students from our student management system and send it to a company that handles our online exams. So to do this export, we had to hire someone who knew the inner workings of our student management system. He wrote an sql (Adaptive Sybase SQL Anywhere) query to export the students to a csv file like we needed. This was before I started working for the district, so for a while I assumed this was an actually application, until it came time for me to do the export myself. And every year he charges us $500 to update this query to export the students for the current year. So when I discovered it was only a query (.bat file and .sql file), my thought was "I can update this myself". All I have to do is change the years in the query (eg. 2009 to 2010). The query (.sql file) itself has this comment at the top: // This code was writtend by [the guy] // and is the property of [his company]...Copyright 2005,2006,2008,2009 // This code MAY NOT BE USED without the expressed written consent of // [his company]. (Yes, it really does says "writtend".) So now my boss is worried that we're violating the copyright. And that the guy is gonna find out that I updated the query myself because we haven't asked him to update it this year and take legal action. So back to the subject's question: Can he really copyright this query? And if so, is modifying it ourselves a copyright violation? In my mind, a single query isn't program code. It's more a command line command. But I don't know what it's considered legally.

I don't know if there is a way to express the following concept in the language of regex: Valid entry would consist of exactly one of the three components : aaaa, aab and bb, regardless of order, followed by an arbitrary sequence of a or b's So this is what is should be like : (a{4}Ua{2}bUb{2})(aUb)* where the content in first braces is order irrelevant. • Connect from java mobile application to webservice to read messages.

  Hello, I have a website where users can send personal messages between them, now I want them to recieve the messages also on their mobile phone but without having to send them a SMS. I am thinking about providing them with a mobile phone with internet access over GPRS or 3G, then develop a Java application that will connect to the website and retrieve the messages. On the website I am thinking to make a webservice where the phone will login, get new messages, and also be able to answer back to messages. Does anyone know any mobile application tutorial that will do that? Or do you recommend me where to start? I never done a java mobile application before, I only work with websites and PHP. I also tried to use ICQ, the client is already done for java and for iphone, and I've also found a script that will send ICQ messages from PHP, but ICQ server bans you for 20 minutes when you do many reconnections, so I have to develop some kind of ICQ bot always online that will check for new messages to send from the mySQL database and then send them, one per 2-3 seconds, so the server won't ban me for flooding. Well any advice or recommendation is welcome about how to have users connected to the website messaging system from their phones. Thank you!

• Correct Interactive Website System Design Concepts / Methods?

  Hi all, I hope this question isn't too open ended, but a nudge in the right direction is all I need! I am currently building an online accounting system - the idea is that users can register, log in, and then create customers, generate invoices and other documents and eventually print / email those documents out. I am a Java programmer but unfortunately haven't had too much experience in web projects and their design concepts... This is what I have got thus far - A Tomcat web server which loads Spring. Spring handles my DAO's and required classes for the business logic. Tomcat serves JSP's containing the pages which make up the website. To make it interactive I have used JavaScript in the pages (jQuery and its AJAX calls) to send and receive JSON data (this is done by posting to a page which calls a handleAction() method in one of my classes). My question is, am I tackling this project in the right way? Am I using the right tools and methods? I understand there are literally countless ways of tackling any project but I would really love to get feedback with regards to tried and tested methods, general practices etc. Thanks in advance! • Nginx rewrite for link shortener and Wordpress

  I'm a complete newbie to Nginx, so much so that I followed a online guide to do most of my server setup. I'm trying to learn but I'm still a ways away from understanding it all. So what I'm trying to create is a link shortener that redirects (example.com/x) to (example.com/short.php?id=x). Keep in mind that I'm also running a Wordpress blog on the same domain and plan on using the redirects/shortening for external links. • What issues to consider when rolling your own data-backend for Silverlight / AJAX on non-ASP.NET ser

  I have read-only Silverlight and AJAX apps which read static text and XML files from a PHP/Apache server, which works very nicely with features such as asynchronous loading, lazy-loading only what I need for each page, loading in the background, developed a little query language to get a PHP script to create custom XML files etc. it's pragmatic read-only REST, and all works fast and fine for read-only sites. Now I want to also add the ability to write data from these apps to a database on the same PHP/Apache server. For those of you who have built similar data-access layers, what do I need to consider while building this, especially regarding security so that not just any client can write and alter my database, e.g.: check HTTP_USER_AGENT for security check REMOTE_ADDR for security require a special code for security, perhaps a list of TAN codes (such as banks use for online transactions) each which can only be used once, both the client and server have these I wonder if there is some kind of standard REST query I should lean on for e.g. building SQL-like statements in the URL parameters, e.g. http://www.thedatalayersite.com/query?insertinto=customers&... Any thoughts, notes from experience, ideas, gotchas, especially ideas on tightening down security in this endeavor would be helpful.

• Load Balancing of PHP/MYSQL script without big code changes

  Sorry for my Dummy Question, but... I am making a script on php/mysql (codeigniter) and I am extremally interested in knowing if there is a way without big architectural changes of the script make a load balancing. I mean, that for example now I will rent a medium dedicated server with 2GB ram, 200GB memory and good processor, and this will be enough lets say half year for the users which will come. But when they will become more and more, and as its a social net and at nights the server is waiting to have 500-1500 or 5000-8000 users online, I wander if there is a way for lets say just add second server with some config which will bear next pressure. After again one and so on... ???? <? if($answer=YES) { how(??); } esle{ whatToDo(??); } ?> If there is no way, than maybe you could point to a easiest way of load balancing solution.... I will be extremally thanksfull if you can tell me for such purposes , should I move lets say to PostgreSQl or FireBird? Which of them will be more easy in the future to handle ? I am getting on the mysite.com/users/show/$userId page something like 60queries for all data... maybe too much, but anyway....after some optimization it can be 20-30....

• Flash - Uploading to and Downloading from localhost

  I have an online flash application that acts as a front end for a server application built in delphi. The server can be installed/used on a remote computer or a personal version can be downloaded and the Flash app pointed at localhost to use it. However, Flash has issues with using the POST and GET functions on the localhost, which makes uploading data files and downloading results files difficult. To get past the difficulty with downloading results files I'm planning to just have the server app serve the results file as an attachment and have the Flash app open the address of the file up in another browser window using external interface. First off, is this likely to cause similar security issues? I.E. Flash will see "localhost" in the external interface call and stop it from working the same as when I try to use POST/GET functions with localhost? Secondly, for upload this seems just a bit little trickier, I'm planning on doing something similar, having flash use external interface to open a php script for a file upload. Is this feasible and, again, will Flash still have security issues? Lastly, if anyone knows how to get flash to execute POST and GET functions with localhost addresses, I'd love to have that information to avoid all this jumping through hoops.

• SignalR - Handling disconnected users

  Hy, I'm using the signalR library on a project to handle an notification and chat modules. I've a table on an database to keep a track of online users. The HUB for chat is inheriting IDisconnect where i disconnect the user. After disconnecting the user, i warm the users about that event. At this point, i check if the disconnect user is the client. If it's, then i call an method on HUB to reconnect the user (just update the table). I do this because with the current implementation, once the user closes a tab on the browser it calls the Disconnect task but he could have another tab opened. I've not tested (with larger requests) this module yet, but on my development server it could take a few seconds between the IDisconnect event, and the request from the user to connect again. I'm concerned with my implementation to handle disconnected users from the chat but i can't see another way to improve this. If possible, could someone give me a advice on this, or this is the only solution that i've?
