  • May I open my own device driver twice simultanoiusly from a user program under Linux?

    Somewhere I read that opening the same file twice has an undefined semantics and should be avoided. In my situation I would like to open my own device multiple times associating multiple file descriptors to it. The file operations of my device are all safe. Is there some part of Linux between the sys call open() and the point it calls the registered file operation .open() that is unsafe?

    Hi, When I write gnome-terminal --tab at the terminal, I expect it to open a new tab in the same terminal window. But it opens a new window instead. I found out that its intention is to open a new tab in a new window, i.e., if I write gnome-terminal --tab --tab it will open a new window with two tabs. So, the question is, how can I open a new tab in the current window using a command in gnome-terminal? I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 x64.

  • RESTful issue with data access when using HTTP DELETE method ...

    I'm having an issue accessing raw request information from PHP when accessing a script using the HTTP DELETE directive. I'm using a JS front end which is accessing a script using Ajax. This script is actually part of a RESTful API which I am developing. The endpoint in this example is: http://api.site.com/session This endpoint is used to generate an authentication token which can be used for subsequent API requests. Using the GET method on this URL along with a modified version of HTTP Basic Authentication will provide an access token for the client. This token must then be included in all other interactions with the service until it expires. Once a token is generated, it is passed back to the client in a format specified by an 'Accept' header which the client sends the service; in this case 'application/json'. Upon success it responds with an HTTP 200 Ok status code. Upon failure, it throws an exception using the HTTP 401 Authorization Required code. Now, when you want to delete a session, or 'log out', you hit the same URL, but with the HTTP DELETE directive. To verify access to this endpoint, the client must prove they were previously authenticated by providing the token they want to terminate. If they are 'logged in', the token and session are terminated and the service should respond with the HTTP 204 No Content status code, otherwise, they are greeted with the 401 exception again. Now, the problem I'm having is with removing sessions. With the DELETE directive, using Ajax, I can't seem to access any parameters I've set once the request hits the service. In this case, I'm looking for the parameter entitled 'token'. I look at the raw request headers using Firebug and I notice the 'Content-Length' header changes with the size of the token being sent. This is telling me that this data is indeed being sent to the server. The question is, using PHP, how the hell to I access parameter information? It's not a POST or GET request, so I can't access it as you normally would in PHP. The parameters are within the content portion of the request. I've tried looking in $_SERVER, but that shows me limited amount of headers. I tried 'apache_request_headers()', which gives me more detailed information, but still, only for headers. I even tried 'file_get_contents('php://stdin');' and I get nothing. How can I access the content portion of a raw HTTP request? Sorry for the lengthy post, but I figured too much information is better than too little. :)

    Hi all, In my application, I have a provision for users to upload files like doc, xls, zip, etc. I would like to know how to store these files on my website and have only restricted people access it. I may have a group of people and let only these group access those uploaded files. I know that some may try to just copy the link to the document or the file and pass it to another (non-permitted) user and they can download it. So how can I prevent it? How can I check if the request to download the file was made by a legitimate user who has access to the file? The usernames of the group members are stored in the database along with the document name and location in the database so they can access it. But how do I prevent non-permitted users from being able to access that confidential data in all ways? With the above in mind, how do I store these documents? Do I store the documents in a blob column in the Database or just just let user upload to a folder and merely store the path to the file in the database? The security of the documents is of utmost importance. So any procedure that could facilitate this feature would definitely help. I am not into Object Oriented programming so if you have a simpler code that you would like to share with me, I would greatly appreciate it. Also how do I archive documents that are old? Like say there are documents that are 1 year old and I want to conserve my website space by archiving them but still make them available to the user when they need it. How do I go about this?   • Can I right-click a folder in Windows 7 and choose "Open with Sublime Text"?

    In Windows 7, I can do this at the command line: "c:\Program Files\Sublime Text 2\sublime_text.exe" samplefolder This launches a Sublime Text window, with the contents of samplefolder loaded in Sublime's sidebar. While this works as needed, it's inconvenient to open a command prompt every single time. Is there any way I can add this behavior to Windows Explorer's right-click menu? I'd like to be able to right-click a folder and "Open with Sublime" just like I can right-click a folder and "Scan for viruses".

  • Why Can't SSMS Access The Documents Folder in Windows 7?

    I have a database backup located in my Windows 7 Documents folder (c:\Users\Aaron\Documents...), and I'm trying to restore it using SQL Server Management Studio. However, the program is unable to access anything within the Users\Aaron directory using its non-standard file selection dialog, even when run as an Administrator. I'm brand new to Windows 7... Is there some sort of security setting that I need to trigger to give programs access to these files?

    When I try to select the following "File Open Web Site" or use the shortcut key "Shift + Alt + O" (which does the same), Visual Studio 2008 hangs with the loading mouse icon for about 8-10 seconds then the file. But if I do "File Open Project/Solution.." or "File Open File..." the explorer window comes up in under a second, instantly most times.     In Aquamacs 2.0 preview 6, when opening new files externally (e.g., via Quicksilver or via dragging files on the Aquamacs icon) they always open in new frames (i.e., new windows). I would prefer new files to be opening in the same frame, just in a new buffer (possibly with tabs turned on). I already unchecked the option "Show Buffers in new Frames", but that only seems to affect the behavior of the built-in open command (Command-o). Are there any options for this or some other way to modify this behavior?

    I downloaded Azureus (a bittorrent client) for Debian Linux, and I notice that Azureus got my firewall (a Verizon wireless base station) to open a TCP and UDP port forwarding for it, without my having to do anything. My base station is password protected, and I'm alarmed at the idea that any random application can open ports without my knowing about it. Can somebody explain to me what is going on and how it is possible that Azureus can create this port-forwarding rule without any authentication?

Now please tell me if I'm right.. if I have file somwhere in subdomain.mydomain.com called index.php I can securely access it via: https://subdomain.mydomain.com/someFolder/index.php but I can also access it via http://subdomain.mydomain.com/someFolder/index.php This time communication won't be encrypted though. So now it comes down to links only if I access files in subdomain.mydomain.com securely or not? I will have another related question (and many more probably), but will post it as separate topic to keep things clean :)

    I can't access the screenr.com java applet on my mac. Poking around the java preferences, I saw an odd entry with a red circle (I assume that means to deny access?) for it in the security section.
