• oracle query with inconsistent results

  Im having a very strange problem, i have a complicated view that returns incorrect data when i query on a particular column. heres an example: select empname, has_garnishment from timecard_v2 where empname = 'Testerson, Testy'; this returns the single result 'Testerson, Testy', 'N' however, if i use the query: select empname, has_garnishment from timecard_v2 where empname = 'Testerson, Testy' and has_garnishment = 'Y'; this returns the single result 'Testerson, Testy', 'Y' The second query should return a subset of the first query, but it returns a different answer. • Login for webapp, needs to be available for support staff

  I know the title is a little off, but it's hard to explain the problem in a short sentence. I am the administrator of a legacy webapp that lets users create surveys and distribute them to a group of people. We have two kinds of "users". Authorized licenseholders which does all setup themselves. Clients who just want to have a survey run, but still need a user (because the webapp has "User" as the top entity in a surveyenvironment.) Sometimes users in #1 want us to do the setup for them (which we offer to do). This means that we have to login as them. This is also how we do support: we login as them and then follow them along, guiding them. Which brings me to my dilemma. Currently our security is below par. But this makes it simple for us to do support. We do want to increase our security, and one thing I have been considering is just doing the normal hashing to DB, however, we need to be able to login as a customer, and if they change their password without telling us, and the password is hashed in the db, we have no way of knowing it. So I was thinking of some kind of twoway encryption for the passwords. Either that or some kind of master password. Any suggestions? (The platform is classic ASP... I said it was legacy...)

I got a answer from your group saying it returns separate images and to try to change the file name to test0001.png, this worked. I am trying to query a database to find the following If a customer searches for a hotel in a city between dates A and B, find and return the hotels in which rooms are free between the two dates. There will be more than one room in each room type(i.e. 5 Rooms in type A, 10 rooms in Type B etc) and we have to query the db to find only those hotels in which there is atleast one room free in atleast one type.   Hi, I have what is probably a really dumb grep in R question. Apologies, because this seems like it should be so easy - I'm obviously just missing something. I have a vector of strings, let's call it alice. Some of alice is printed out below: T.8EFF.SP.OT1.D5.VSVOVA#4 T.8EFF.SP.OT1.D6.LISOVA#1 T.8EFF.SP.OT1.D6.LISOVA#2 T.8EFF.SP.OT1.D6.LISOVA#3 T.8EFF.SP.OT1.D6.VSVOVA#4 T.8EFF.SP.OT1.D8.VSVOVA#3 T.8EFF.SP.OT1.D8.VSVOVA#4 T.8MEM.SP#1 T.8MEM.SP#3 T.8MEM.SP.OT1.D106.VSVOVA#2 T.8MEM.SP.OT1.D45.LISOVA#1 T.8MEM.SP.OT1.D45.LISOVA#3 I'd like grep to give me the number after the D that appears in some of these strings, conditional on the string containing "LIS" and an empty string or something otherwise. I was hoping that grep would return me the value of a capturing group rather than the whole string. Here's my R-flavoured regexp: pattern <- (?<=\\.D)([0-9]+)(?=.LIS) nothing too complicated. But in order to get what I'm after, rather than just using grep(pattern, alice, value = TRUE, perl = TRUE) I'm doing the following, which seems bad: reg.out <- regexpr( "(?<=\\.D)[0-9]+(?=.LIS)", alice, perl=TRUE ) substr(alice,reg.out,reg.out + attr(reg.out,"match.length")-1) Looking at it now it doesn't seem too ugly, but the amount of messing about it's taken to get this utterly trivial thing working has been embarrassing. Anyone any pointers about how to go about this properly? Bonus marks for pointing me to a webpage that explains the difference between whatever I access with $,@ and attr.

• Problem with JavaScript arithmetic

  I have a form for my customers to add budget projections. A prominent user wants to be able to show dollar values in either dollars, Kila-dollars or Mega-dollars. I'm trying to achieve this with a group of radio buttons that call the following JavaScript function, but am having problems with rounding that make the results look pretty crummy. • Uncompress a TIFF file without going through BufferedImage

  I am receiving large size CCITT Group 4 compressed TIFF files that need to be written elsewhere as uncompressed TIFF files. I am using the jai_imageio TIFF reader and writer to do that and it works well as long as the product _width * height_ of the image fits in an integer. • Possible defect with jQuery ':checked' selector (finding checked checkbox when there are none)

  Found a strange thing. The following code is supposed to set a default value for a UI element based on whether one of a group of checkboxes (all having attribute name="privacy") is checked (in say, a form postback). If there is no value in the HTML sent by the server (the form is not a postback), the default value should be firstMenuItemKey. Otherwise, it should be the one checked in the underlying HTML. However, while this works on the first call to the URL that includes the form, a refresh of the page will set the value of defaultPrivacyValue to one of the privacy checkboxes'. I've checked that the server isn't checking the checkbox before the script runs (it's not). I've also checked whether somewhere else in the script is checking the checkbox (it's not). var defaultPrivacyValue = firstMenuItemKey; $('input[name=privacy]:checked').each(function() { defaultPrivacyValue = $(this).next().find('.name').text(); }); selectMenuItem(defaultPrivacyValue); When I chaged the selector to 'input[name=privacy][checked=checked]' it worked as expected. Is this a defect in the jQuery implementation of DOM retrieval based on the ':checked' selector???? I'm using jQuery 1.4.2. Thanks for any help you can give.

• How do I make the following interaction with mySQL more efficient?

  I've got an array that contains combinations of unique MySql IDs: For example: [ [1,10,11], [2,10], [3,10,12], [3,12,13,20], [4,12] ] In total there are a couple hundred different combinations of IDs. Some of these combinations are "valid" and some are not. For example, [1,10,11] may be a valid combination, whereas [3,10,12] may be invalid. Combinations are valid or invalid depending on how the data is arranged in the database. Currently I am using a SELECT statement to determine whether or not a specific combination of IDs is valid. It looks something like this: SELECT id1 FROM table WHERE id2 IN ($combination) GROUP BY id1 HAVING COUNT(distinct id2) = $number ...where $combination is one possible combination of IDs (eg 1,10,11) and $number is the number of IDs in that combination (in this case, 3). An invalid combination will return 0 rows. A valid combination will return 1 or more rows. However, to solve the entire set of possible combinations means looping a couple hundred SELECT statements, which I would rather not be doing. I am wondering: Are there any tricks for making this more efficient? Is it possible to submit the entire dataset to mySQL in one go, and have mySQL iterate through it? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

• Writing a JavaScript zip code validation function

  I would like to write a JavaScript function that validates a zip code, by checking if the zip code actually exists. Here is a list of all zip codes: http://www.census.gov/tiger/tms/gazetteer/zips.txt (I only care about the 2nd column) This is really a compression problem. I would like to do this for fun. OK, now that's out of the way, here is a list of optimizations over a straight hashtable that I can think of, feel free to add anything I have not thought of: Break zipcode into 2 parts, first 2 digits and last 3 digits. Make a giant if-else statement first checking the first 2 digits, then checking ranges within the last 3 digits. Or, covert the zips into hex, and see if I can do the same thing using smaller groups. Find out if within the range of all valid zip codes there are more valid zip codes vs invalid zip codes. Write the above code targeting the smaller group. Break up the hash into separate files, and load them via Ajax as user types in the zipcode. So perhaps break into 2 parts, first for first 2 digits, second for last 3. Lastly, I plan to generate the JavaScript files using another program, not by hand. Edit: performance matters here. I do want to use this, if it doesn't suck. Performance of the JavaScript code execution + download time. Edit 2: JavaScript only solutions please. I don't have access to the application server, plus, that would make this into a whole other problem =)

• Can't wrap my head around appengine data store persistence

  Hi, I've run into the "can't operate on multiple entity groups in a single transaction." problem when using APPENGINE FOR JAVA w/ JDO with the following code: PersistenceManager pm = PMF.get().getPersistenceManager(); Query q = pm.newQuery("SELECT this FROM " + TypeA.class.getName() + " WHERE userId == userIdParam "); q.declareParameters("String userIdParam"); List<TypeA> poos = (List<TypeA>) q.execute(userIdParam); for (TypeA a : allTypeAs) { a.setSomeField(someValue); } pm.close(); } The problem it seems is that I can't operate on a multiple entities at the same time b/c they arent in the same entity group while in a transaction. Even though it doesn't seem like I'm in a transaction, appengine generates one because I have the following set in my jdoconfig.xml: <property name="datanucleus.appengine.autoCreateDatastoreTxns" value="true"/> Fine. So far I think I understand. BUT - if I replace TypeA in the above code, with TypeB - I don't get the error. I don't believe there is anything different between type a and type b - they both have the same key structure. They do have different fields but that shouldn't matter, right? My question is - what could possible be different between TypeA and TypeB that they give this different behavior? And consequently what do you I fundamentally misunderstand that this behavior could even exist.... Thanks.

• SVN checkout or export for production environment?

  In a project I am working on, we have an ongoing discussion amongst the dev team - should the production environment be deployed as a checkout from the SVN repository or as an export? The development environment is obviously a checkout, since it is constantly updated. For the production, I'm personally for checking out the main trunk, since it makes future updates easier (just run svn update). However some of the devs are against it, as svn creates files with the group/owner and permissions of the svn process (this is on a linux OS, so those things matter), and also having the .svn directories on the production seem to them to be somewhat dirty. Also, if it is a checkout - how do you push individual features to the production without including in-development code? do you use tags or branch out for each feature? any alternatives? EDIT: I might not have been clear - one of the requirement is to be able to constantly be able to push fixes to the production environment. We want to avoid a complete build (which takes much longer than a simple update) just for pushing critical fixes.

  Hello good people! :) I want to render parts of a svg file by name but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to do so (using python + gtk). Here's the svg file in question: http://david.bellot.free.fr/svg-cards/files/SVG-cards-2.0.1.tar.gz On his site, David, says: You can draw a card either by rendering the file onto a pixmap and clipping each card manually or by using the card's name through a DOM interface. All cards are embedded into a SVG group. I don't know what he means by a DOM interface. • MySQL multidimensional arrays...

  What is the best way to store data that is dynamic in nature using MySQL? Let's say I have a table in which one item is "dynamic". For some entries I need to store one value, but for others it could be one hundred values. For example let's say I have the following simple table: CREATE TABLE manager ( name char(50), worker_1_name(50), worker_2_name(50), ... worker_N_name(50) ); Clearly, this is not an ideal way to set up a database. Because I have to accommodate the largest group that a manager could potentially have, I am wasting a lot of space in the database. What I would prefer is to have a table that I can use as a member of another table (like I would do in C++ through inheritance) that can be used by the "manager" table to handle the variable number of employees. It might look something like this. CREATE TABLE manager ( name char(50), underlings WORKERS ); CREATE TABLE WORKERS ( name char(50), ); I would like to be able to add a variable number of workers to each manager. Is this possible or am I constrained to enumerating all the possible number of employees even though I will use the full complement only rarely?

• How can I find "People's Contacts" folders via Outlook's object model?

  I have some code that locates all the contact folders that a user has access to by iterating through the Application.Session.Stores collection. This works for the user's contacts and also all the public contacts folders. It also finds all the contacts folders in additional mailbox accounts that the user has added via the Tools - Account Settings... menu command. However, this requires the user to have full access to the other person's account. When a user only has access to another person's contacts, then that person's contacts show up under the "People's Contacts" group in the Contacts view. How do I find those contact folders that don't show up under Session.Stores? In order to see the other user's contacts folder without adding access to their full mailbox, click File - Open - Other User's Folder... from the Outlook menu. In the dialog box, enter the other user's name and select Contacts from the Folder type drop down list. Here's the code (minus the error checking and logging) I'm using to find a list of all the user's Outlook contact folders. I know this can (and maybe should) be done using early binding to the Outlook.Application type, but that doesn't affect the results. EnumerateFolders is recursive so that it searches all sub folders. • Is it legal to have different SOAP namespaces/versions between the request and response?

  THIRD EDIT: I now believe that this problem is due to a SOAP version mismatch (1.1 request, 1.2 response) masquerading as a namespace problem. Is it illegal to mix versions, or just bad style? Am I completely out of luck if I can't change my SOAP version or the service's? SECOND EDIT: Clarified error message, and tried to reduce "tl;dr"-ness. EDIT: [Link deleted, not related] Using soapUI, I'm sending a request that starts with: <soapenv:Envelope xmlns:soapenv="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" ... and getting a response that starts with: <soap:Envelope xmlns:soap="http://www.w3.org/2003/05/soap-envelope" ... I know the service is getting the info, because processes down the line are working. However, my soapUI teststep fails. It has two active assertions: "SOAP Response" and "Not SOAP Fault." The failure marker is next to "SOAP Response," with the following message: line -1: Element Envelope@http://www.w3.org/2003/05/soap-envelope is not a valid Envelope@http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/ document or a valid substitution. I have tried mixing and matching the namespace prefixes and schema URLs. Changing prefixes seems to have no effect; changing URLs causes a VersionMismatch error. I have also tried to use a substitution group, but that doesn't seem to be legal.

  I currently have an activex control that initiates a media (video/audio) framework another development group in my company developed and I am providing a window handle to that code. That handle is being used by their rendering plugin in the pipeline that uses Direct3d for rendering the video using that handle. I have seperate LPDIRECT3D9EX and LPDIRECT3DDEVICE9EX pointers that I initialize in my activex control. I am trying to clear a backbuffer to transparent and then use directx drawing primatives to draw on that backbuffer producing a transparent window with my drawing primatives over the streaming video on the directx surface below. It appears that clearing a device backbuffer with full alpha transparency is ignored by directx. d3ddev->Clear(0, NULL, D3DCLEAR_TARGET, D3DCOLOR_RGBA(0, 0, 1, 0 /*full alpha*/), 1.0f, 0); I can see the object I draw but they are drawn on top of a backbuffer that has the RGB color specified without the alpha value. The project linked (http://www.codeproject.com/KB/directx/umvistad3d.aspx) to in the stackoverflow question below does what I want but requires vista's Desktop Window Manager and won't work for XP. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/148275/how-do-i-draw-transparent-directx-content-in-a-transparent-window I have tried with D3DRS_ALPHABLENDENABLE true with configured blend with no avail. I have also tried to have pixels with full alpha values not rendered using D3DRS_ALPHATESTENABLE, D3DRS_ALPHAREF, and D3DRS_ALPHAFUNC setup but this doesn't work either. I have tried using ColorFill with alpha after retrieving the backbuffer with GetBackBuffer but this doesn't work either. (again only RGB is used) Finally I have tried creating a texture, selecting a surface, colorfilling that surface with a fully transparent alpha value, then loading that surface onto the backbuffer but only the RGB values appear to be used. I have checked the capabilities using the DXCapsViewer.exe and the D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8 backbuffer format that I am using for the backbuffer is valid so it can't be that. Has anyone gotten a transparent backbuffer in directx to work in XP?

• Cannot get new product attribute in grid display

  I added a new attribute to my products(a boolean "yes/no" field). It is a variable to enable/disable the price from displaying on the product detail page, and grid view. I managed to get it work on the product info page. But on product grid page I cant seem to access that variable. Specifically, the template i am working with is catalog/product/price.phtml. From what i can tell, the price is being displayed by the same group of if-statements on both the product detail page, and grid page. This has me confused because i cant find any code on that template to handle multiple products, just a bunch of nested if statements. this is how im attempting to access this new variable using $_displayPrice. on line 36 of catalog/product/price.html <?php $_product = $this->getProduct(); ?> <?php $_id = $_product->getId() ?> <?php $_displayPrice = $_product->getDisplayPrice() ?   One of my interests in AI focuses not so much on data but more on biologic computing. This includes neural networks, mapping the brain, cellular-automata, virtual life and environments. Described below is an exciting project that includes develop a virtual environment for bots to evolve in. "Polyworld is a cross-platform (Linux, Mac OS X) program written by Larry Yaeger to evolve Artificial Intelligence through natural selection and evolutionary algorithms." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyworld " Polyworld is a promising project for studying virtual life but it still is far from creating an "intelligent autonomous" agent. Here is my question, in theory, what parameters would you use create an AI environment? Possibly a brain environment? Possibly multiple self contained life organisms that have their own "brain" or life structures. I would like a create a spin on the game of life simulation. What if you have a 64x64 game of life grid. But instead of one grid, you might have N number of grids. The N number of grids are your "life force" If all of the game of life entities die in a particular grid then that entire grid dies. A group of "grids" makes up a life form. I don't have an immediate goal. First, I want to simulate an environment and visualize what is going on in the environment with OpenGL and see if there are any interesting properties to the environment. I then want to add "scarce resources" and see if the AI environment can manage resources adequately.

  In fact, my question concerns an algorithm. I need to be able to attach annotations to certain parts of a text, like a word or a group of words. The first thing that came to me to do so is to store the position of this part (indexes) in the text. For instance, in the text 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog', I'd like to attach an annotation to 'quick brown fox', so the indexes of the annotation would be 4 - 14. But since the text is editable (other annotations could provoke a modification from text's author), the annoted part is likely to move (the indexes could change). In fact, I don't know how to update the indexes of the annoted part. What if the text becomes 'Everyday, the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog' ? I guess I have to watch every change of the text in the front-end application ? The front-end part of the application will be HTML with Javascript. I will be using PHP to develop the back-end part and every text and annotation will be stored in a database.
