  • Node.js/ v8: How to make my own snapshot to accelerate startup

    I have a node.js (v0.6.12) application that starts by evaluating a Javascript file, startup.js. It takes a long time to evaluate startup.js, and I'd like to 'bake it in' to a custom build of Node if possible. The v8 source directory distributed with Node, node/deps/v8/src, contains a SconScript that can almost be used to do this. On line 302, we have LIBRARY_FILES = ''' runtime.js v8natives.js array.js string.js uri.js math.js messages.js apinatives.js date.js regexp.js json.js liveedit-debugger.js mirror-debugger.js debug-debugger.js '''.split() Those javascript files are present in the same directory. Something in the build process apparently evaluates them, takes a snapshot of state, and saves it as a byte string in node/out/Release/obj/release/snapshot.cc (on Mac OS). Some customization of the startup snapshot is possible by altering the SconScript. For example, I can change the definition of the builtin Date.toString by altering date.js. I can even add new global variables by adding startup.js to the list of library files, with contents global.test = 1. However, I can't put just any javascript code in startup.js. If it contains Date.toString = 1;, an error results even though the code is valid at the node repl: Build failed: -> task failed (err #2): {task: libv8.a SConstruct -> libv8.a} make: *** [program] Error 1 And it obviously can't make use of code that depends on libraries Node adds to v8. global.underscore = require('underscore'); causes the same error. I'd ideally like a tool, customSnapshot, where customSnapshot startup.js evaluates startup.js with node and then dumps a snapshot to a file, snapshot.cc, which I can put into the node source directory. I can then build node and tell it not to rebuild the snapshot.

  • Can a web app in xul:iframe access functions from its parent XUL file?

    I want to deploy a web app as a self-contained program using XULRunner. I'm simply loading it in a xul:iframe tag within the main XUL file. It works, but I want the web app to have access to XUL components, specifically nsiFilePicker.     I have a partial view called '_comment.erb', and it may be called by parent many times(e.g. in a loop). I hope it can be define only once, but I don't want to move it to parent view. I need to create a script that will transfer the data from the first database to the second. I have created this script. But when the script trys to run it with exec i get this error Msg 911, Level 16, State 1, Line 21 Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'INSERT INTO table SELECT * FROM MPDEV090314'.   • MySql Query lag time / deadlock?

    When there are multiple PHP scripts running in parallel, each making an UPDATE query to the same record in the same table repeatedly, is it possible for there to be a 'lag time' before the table is updated with each query? I have basically 5-6 instances of a PHP script running in parallel, having been launched via cron. Each script gets all the records in the items table, and then loops through them and processes them. However, to avoid processing the same item more than once, I store the id of the last item being processed in a seperate table. So this is how my code works: function getCurrentItem() { $sql = "SELECT currentItemId from settings"; $result = $this->db->query($sql); return $result->get('currentItemId'); } function setCurrentItem($id) { $sql = "UPDATE settings SET currentItemId='$id'"; $this->db->query($sql); } $currentItem = $this->getCurrentItem(); $sql = "SELECT * FROM items WHERE status='pending' AND id > $currentItem'"; $result = $this->db->query($sql); $items = $result->getAll(); foreach ($items as $i) { //Check if $i has been processed by a different instance of the script, and if so, //leave it untouched. if ($this->getCurrentItem() > $i->id) continue; $this->setCurrentItem($i->id); // Process the item here } But despite of all the precautions, most items are being processed more than once. Which makes me think that there is some lag time between the update queries being run by the PHP script, and when the database actually updates the record. Is it true? And if so, what other mechanism should I use to ensure that the PHP scripts always get only the latest currentItemId even when there are multiple scripts running in parrallel? Would using a text file instead of the db help?

    I'm trying to use jQuery to load the body of another HTML document, which contains our AdSense banner. It should display under each blog entry when in list view. I'm able to get it to load text, even images, but not the banner; the banner is a small script. Here is the website we are working with: http://neverknowtech.com/data/ (that's a test page, and the 'entry' displayed there contains the intended body content) As you can see here the body code does include an ad, and the word 'Ad'. The word 'Ad' is shown correctly below the post (as it is in list view) but the script for the Google Ad doesn't seem to make it.     I'm just getting into Factory Girl and I am running into a difficulty that I'm sure should be much easier. I just couldn't twist the documentation into a working example. Assume I have the following models: class League < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :teams end class Team < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :league has_many :players end class Player < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :team end What I want to do is this: team = Factory.build(:team_with_players) and have it build up a bunch of players for me. I tried this: Factory.define :team_with_players, :class => :team do |t| t.sequence {|n| "team-#{n}" } t.players {|p| 25.times {Factory.build(:player, :team => t)} } end But this fails on the :team=>t section, because t isn't really a Team, it's a Factory::Proxy::Builder. I have to have a team assigned to a player. In some cases I want to build up a League and have it do a similar thing, creating multiple teams with multiple players. What am I missing?

    I'm in the process of porting an app to JavaScript/CSS and it uses right-click. For some reason Firefox 3.6 for Windows isn't issuing a right-click event, but Chrome and IE do. Here's some test code.   • How can I use Django with MySQL in MAMP stack?

    Hi all, I have difficulty especially in installing MySQLdb module (MySQL-python-1.2.3c1), to connect to the MySQL in MAMP stack. I've done a number of things such as copying the mysql include directory and library (including plugin) from a fresh installation of mysql (version 5.1.47) to the one inside MAMP (version 5.1.37). Now, the MySQLdb module build and install doesnt give me error. The error happens when I'm calling 'import MySQLdb' from python shell (version 2.6).     What is the best way to gray out text inputs on an HTML form? I need the inputs to be grayed out when a user checks a check box. Do I have to use JavaScript for this (not very familiar with JScript) or can I use PHP (which I am more familiar with)? EDIT: After some reading I have got a little bit of code, but it is giving me problems. For some reason I cannot get my script to work based on the state of the form input (enabled or disabled) or the state of my checkbox (checked or unchecked), but my script works fine when I base it on the values of the form inputs. I have written my code exactly like several examples online (mainly this one) but to no avail. None of the stuff that is commented out will work.   • Horizontally and Vertically Center Modal Div IE Issue

    I'm trying to horizontally and vertically center a modal window inside a div. I want it to be cross browser compatible. You can see from the picture below that when I resize IE8 then click, "show modal" button it displays not exactly horizontally centered. This does not seem to be an issue with Chrome. Any thoughts?   • Specific compiler flags for specific files in Xcode

    I've been tasked to work on a project that has some confusing attributes. The project is of the nature that it won't compile for the iPhone Simulator And the iPhone Device with the same compile settings. I think it has to do with needing to be specifically compiled for x86 or arm6/7 depending on the target platform. So the project's build settings, when viewed in Xcode's Build Settings view doesn't enable me to set specific compiler flags per specific files. However, the previous developer that worked on this project has somehow declared the line: CE7FEB5710F09234004DE356 /* MyFile.m in Sources */ = {isa = PBXBuildFile; fileRef = CE7FEB5510F09234004DE356 /* MyFile.m */; settings = {COMPILER_FLAGS = "-fasm-blocks -marm -mfpu=neon"; }; }; Is there any way to do this without editing the project file by hand? I know that editing the project file can result in breaking it completely, so I'd rather not do that, as I obviously don't know as much as the previous developer. So to clarify, the question is: The build fails when compiling for simulator unless I remove the -fasm-blocks flag. The build fails when compiling for device unless I add the -fasm-blocks flag. Is there a way to set this flag per file without editing the project file by hand?

  • Is MVC 2 client-side validation broken in Visual Studio 2010 RC?

    I can't seem to get client side validation working with the version of MVC released with Visual Studio 2010 RC. I've tried it with two projects -- one upgrade from 1.0, and one using the template that came with VS. I'd think the template version would work, but it doesn't. Added the following scripts: <script type="text/javascript" src="<%= Url.Content("~/Scripts/MicrosoftMvcValidation.js") %>"> </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="<%= Url.Content("~/Scripts/jquery.validate.js")%>"> </script> which are downloaded to the client correctly. Added the following to my form page: <% Html.EnableClientValidation(); %> <%--yes, am aware of the EndForm() bug! --%> <% using (Html.BeginForm()) { %> <%--snip --%> and I can see the client validation scripts have been added to the bottom of the form. But still client validation never happens. What is worse is that in my upgraded project, the client validation scripts are never output in the page! PLEASE NOTE: I am specifically asking about the version of MVC2 that came with VS2010 RC. Also, I do know how to google; please don't waste anybody's time searching and answering if you aren't familiar with this issue in the release candidate of Visual Studio. Thanks.

  • cgi.FieldStorage always empty - never returns POSTed form Data

    This problem is probably embarrassingly simple. I'm trying to give python a spin. I thought a good way to start doing that would be to create a simple cgi script to process some form data and do some magic. My python script is executed properly by apache using mod_python, and will print out whatever I want it to print out. My only problem is that cgi.FieldStorage() is always empty. I've tried using both POST and GET. Each trial I fill out both form fields. <form action="pythonScript.py" method="POST" name="ARGH"> <input name="TaskName" type="text" /> <input name="TaskNumber" type="text" /> <input type="submit" /> </form> If I change the form to point to a perl script it reports the form data properly.   • Is there a good way of automatically generating javascript client code from server side python

    I basically want to be able to: Write a few functions in python (with the minimum amount of extra meta data) Turn these functions into a web service (with the minimum of effort / boiler plate) Automatically generate some javascript functions / objects for rpc (this should prevent me from doing as many stupid things as possible like mistyping method names, forgetting the names of methods, passing the wrong number of arguments) Example python: def hello_world(): return "Hello world" javascript: ... <!-- This file is automatically generated (either dynamically or statically) --> <script src="http://myurl.com/webservice/client_side_javascript"> </script> ... <script> $('#button').click(function () { hello_world(function (data){ $('#label').text(data))) } </script> A bit of research has shown me some approaches that come close to this: Automatic generation of json-rpc services from functions with a little boiler plate code in python and then using jquery and json to do the calls (still easy to make mistakes with method names - still need to be aware of urls when calling, very irritating to write these calls yourself in the firebug shell) Using a library like soaplib to generate wsdl from python (by adding copious type information). And then somehow convert this into javascript (not sure if there is even a library to do this) But are there any approaches closer to what I want?

    Hey guys! I'm developing a small app where i ask users to put some info. I want to show text hints in the input fields. I do this in a for loop... When the page is loaded, the hints are displayed correctly but nothing happens on 'focus' and 'blur' events... I'm wondering why since when I don't use a 'for loop' in my js code, everything works find...
