• Is it possible to construct a cube with less than 24 vertices

  I have a cube-based world like minecraft and I'm wondering if there's a way to construct a cube with less than 24 vertices so I can reduce memory usage. It doesn't seem possible to me for 2 reasons: the normals wouldn't come out right and per-face textures wouldn't work. Is this the case or am I wrong? Maybe there's some fancy new dx11 tech that can help? Edit: Just to clarify, I have 2 requirements: I need surface normals for each cube face in order to do proper lighting and I need a way to address a different indexes in a texture array for each cube face

• How does "rm" on a NTFS filesystem differs from Window's own implementation?

  I have an external USB disk with an NTFS filesystem on it. If I remove a file from Windows and I run one of the several "undelete" utilities (say, TestDisk) I can easily recover the file (because "it's still there but it's marked as deleted"). If I remove the file from Linux no utility (unless I use a deep-search signature-based one) can recover the file. Why? How is unlink implemented in Linux's NTFS file system code? It looks like it does not just "mark it as undeleted" but it wipes away some on-disk structure, is this the case?

  I've written my own Reversi player, based on the MiniMax algorithm, with Alpha-Beta pruning, but in the first 10 moves my evaluation function is too slow. I need a good early-game evaluation function. • Continuous Collision Detection Techniques

  I know there are quite a few continuous collision detection algorithms out there , but I can't find a list or summary of different 2D techniques; only tutorials on specific algorithms. What techniques are out there for calculating when different 2D bodies will collide and what are the advantages / disadvantages of each? I say techniques and not algorithms because I have not yet decided on how I will store different polygons which might be concave or even have holes. I plan to make a decision on this based on what the algorithm requires (for instance if an algorithm breaks down a polygon into triangles or convex shapes I will simply store the polygon data in this form).

• today's multi-device world for web development

  With the huge explosion of mobile devices and addition of HTML5/CSS3, there seems to be a shift towards "responsive" designs (i.e., adapting to smaller screen sizes) which seems to be achieved using CSS3's Media Queries. My question is, given the current need of adapting to both desktop and mobile, is it common practice to actually organize two versions of your website (one for desktop and one for mobile)? Or is there just one version with different css files for targeting different devices and screens? Handling just cross-browser (ie6, ff3, opera9, etc...) HTML4/5, CSS2/3 was already hard enough, but now we're expected to handle cross-device (phone, tablet, etc...) as well, so my assumption is company's would create a separate project for mobile and redirect based on the user agent, but this is just a guess.

• Desktop sharing options for Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity

  I would like to be able to access my office Ubuntu 12.04 machine from home, from a Mac Mini with Mac OSX. I have a VPN and I am able to access my office machine over SSH, so connectivity is not a problem. I browsed other questions, and it seems that there are several options: VNC XRDP FreeNX (haven't heard this one before) Are there any other? I have been using Remote Desktop on Windows before, and I actually like it. Not sure how well is XRDP implemented. I also used VNC several years back, and I didn't like its performance back then - not sure if things have changed since then. As I said above, the machine I want to access is running Ubuntu 12.04, with Unity. And I am using Unity by choice - I really like it and would like to continue using it :) The client computer is running Mac OSX (Snow Leopard). Based on your previous experience what is the best setup for this environment?

• No enable mobile broadband option

  I just migrated from Wubi to actual dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 7 my machine is an Aspire 4750G. When I had (Wubi) Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit the network applet included the "enable mobile broadband" option. Now, I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32-bit) actual install as the 64-bit does not work. And my problem is that it does not show the "enable mobile broadband" option. This is so weird considering that I did not encounter the same problem in Wubi based installation.. Kindly help.. I have managed to connect to the internet via Sakis3G Script, still I find the previous method a lot more convenient..

This can then be used by other Java EE components as well, such as Managed Beans. The plan is to add an annotation and standardized values in the javax.transaction package. After you select an answer, the system tells you if you are right or wrong and provides an explanation. It provides the percentage of correct answers. • A very useful custom component

  Whenever I am debugging a problem in WebCenter Content (WCC) I often find it useful to see the contents of the internal data binder used by WCC when executing a service. I want to know the value of all parameters passed in by the caller, either a user in the web GUI or from an application calling the service via RIDC or web services. I also want to the know the value of binder variables calculated by WCC as it processes a service. What defaults has it applied based on configuration settings or profile rules? What values has it derived based on the user input? To help with this I created a  component that uses a java filter to dump out the contents of the internal data binder to the WCC trace file. It dumps the binder contents using the toString() method. You can register this filter code using many different filter hooks to see how the binder is updated as WCC processes the service. By default, it uses the validateStandard filter hook which is useful during a CHECKIN service. It uses the system trace section, so make sure that trace section is enabled before looking for the output from this component. • Batching dynamic sprites in OpenGL

  I'm trying to wrap my head around how batching is done in a 2D sprite-based game. My understanding is I'd get the vertices that represent each sprite I want to draw and stuff them all into a single mesh. That way I'd only need a single draw call to render everything. Does this apply when the sprites I render are different between frames, or when some sprites are moving? Because it sounds like I'd then have to recreate my batch mesh each frame, using either glDrawArrays/glDrawElements or a streaming VBO I assume. Does this sound correct?

• What is Happening vs. What is Interesting

  Devoxx 2011 was yet another confirmation that all development everywhere is either on the web or on mobile phones. Whether you looked at the conference schedule or attended sessions or talked to speakers at any point at all, it was very clear that no development whatsoever is done anymore on the desktop. In fact, that's something Tim Bray himself told me to my face at the speakers dinner. No new developments of any kind are happening on the desktop. Everyone who is currently on the desktop is working overtime to move all of their applications to the web. They're probably also creating a small subset of their application on an Android tablet, with an even smaller subset on their Android phone. Then you scratch that monolithic surface and find some interesting results. Without naming any names, I asked one of these prominent "ah, forget about the desktop" people at the Devoxx speakers dinner (and I have a witness): "Yes, the desktop is dead, but what about air traffic control, stock trading, oil analysis, risk management applications? In fact, what about any back office application that needs to be usable across all operating systems? Here there is no concern whatsoever with 100% accessibility which is, after all, the only thing that the web has over the desktop, (except when there's a network failure, of course, or when you find yourself in the 3/4 of the world where there's bandwidth problems)? There are 1000's of hidden applications out there that have processing requirements, security requirements, and the requirement that they'll be available even when the network is down or even completely unavailable. Isn't that a valid use case and aren't there 1000's of applications that fall into this so-called niche category? Are you not, in fact, confusing consumer applications, which are increasingly web-based and mobile-based, with high-end corporate applications, which typically need to do massive processing, of one kind or another, for which the web and mobile worlds are completely unsuited?" And you will not believe what the reply to the above question was. (Again, I have a witness to this discussion.) But here it is: "Yes. But those applications are not interesting. I do not want to spend any of my time or work in any way on those applications. They are boring." I'm sad to say that the leaders of the software development community, including those in the Java world, either share the above opinion or are led by it. Because they find something that is not new to be boring, they move on to what is interesting and start talking like the supposedly-boring developments don't even exist. (Kind of like a rapper pretending classical music doesn't exist.) Time and time again I find myself giving Java desktop development courses (at companies, i.e., not hobbyists, or students, but companies, i.e., the places where dollars are earned), where developers say to me: "The course you're giving about creating cross-platform, loosely coupled, and highly cohesive applications is really useful to us. Why do we never find information about this topic at conferences? Why can we never attend a session at a conference where the story about pluggable cross-platform Java is told? Why do we get the impression that we are uncool because we're not on the web and because we're not on a mobile phone, while the reason for that is because we're creating $1000,000 simulation software which has nothing to gain from being on the web or on the mobile phone?" And then I say: "Because nobody knows you exist. Because you're not submitting abstracts to conferences about your very interesting use cases. And because conferences tend to focus on what is new, which tends to be web related (especially HTML 5) or mobile related (especially Android). Because you're not taking the responsibility on yourself to tell the real stories about the real applications being developed all the time and every day. Because you yourself think your work is boring, while in fact it is fascinating. Because desktop developers are working from 9 to 5 on the desktop, in secure environments, such as banks and defense, where you can't spend time, nor have the interest in, blogging your latest tip or trick, as opposed to web developers, who tend to spend a lot of time on the web anyway and are therefore much more inclined to create buzz about the kind of work they're doing." So, next time you look at a conference program and wonder why there's no stories about large desktop development projects in the program, here's the short answer: "No one is going to put those items on the program until you start submitting those kinds of sessions. If the perspective changes the sprites stay sharp and don't get blurred. How can I archive this?
