• Error in datatype (nvarchar instead of ntext)

  I am importing data from excel(.xls) to SQL Server 2008 using SSIS. I have included IMEX=1 in the connection string of excel connection manager. But a column consists of a value as below: 4-Hour Engineer Dispatch ASPP Engr Dispatch 1: Up to 1 dispatch (8 hours) per year. Hours exceeding allocation billed @ 1.5x hourly rate w/ 8-hr min Engr Dispatch: 8-hrs to arrive on-site from Ciena's determination of need On-Site Engineer Dispatch - 8 Hour ASPP Engr Dispatch 8: Up to 8 dispatch (64 hours) per year. Hours exceeding allocation billed @ 1.5x hourly rate w/ 8-hr min Engr Dispatch: NBD to dispatch from Ciena's determination of need Per Incident On Site Support ASPP Engr Dispatch 12: Up to 12 dispatch (96 hours) per year. Hours exceeding allocation billed @ 1.5x hourly rate w/ 8-hr min Engr Dispatch: Next day to arrive on-site from Ciena's determination of need Resident Engineer Engr Dispatch: 2-hrs to arrive on-site from Ciena's determination of need Engr Dispatch: 4-hrs to arrive on-site from Ciena's determination of need ASPP Engr Dispatch 2: Up to 2 dispatch (16 hours) per year. Hours exceeding allocation billed @ 1.5x hourly rate w/ 8-hr min N Actually there are about 600 rows in that excel file. But the above mentioned value is present after 450 rows only. So, the datatype of that column is taken as nvarchar(255) as default instead of ntext and so i am getting error. Anybody please help out... Thanks in advance...

• Model login constraints based on time

  Good morning, for an existing web application I need to implement "time based login constraints". It means that for each user, later maybe each group, I can define timeslots when they are (not) allowed to log in into the system. As all data for the application is stored in database tables, I need to somehow create a way to model this idea in that way. My first approach, I will try to explain it here: Create a tree of login constraints (called "timeslots") with the main "categories", like "workday", "weekend", "public holiday", etc. on the top level, which are in a "sorted" order (meaning "public holiday" has a higher priority than "weekday") for each top level node create subnodes, which have a finer timespan, like "monday", "tuesday", ... below that, create an "hour" level: 0, 1, 2, ..., 23. No further details are necessary. set every member to "allowed" by default For every member of the system create a 1:n relationship member:timeslots which defines constraints, e.g. a member A may have A:monday-forbidden and A:tuesday-forbidden Do a depth-first search at every login and check if the member has a constraint. Why a depth first search? Well, I thought that it may be that a member has the rules: A:monday->forbidden, A:monday-10->allowed, A:mondey-11->allowed So a login on monday at 12:30 would fail, but one at 10:30 succeed. For performance reasons I could break the relational database paradigm and set a flag for every entry in the member-to-timeslots-table which is set to true if the member has information set for "finer" timeslots, but that's a second step. Is this model in principle a good idea? Are there existing models? Thanks.

• How do I read binary C++ protobuf data using Python protobuf?

  The Python version of Google protobuf gives us only: SerializeAsString() Where as the C++ version gives us both: SerializeToArray(...) SerializeAsString() We're writing to our C++ file in binary format, and we'd like to keep it this way. That said, is there a way of reading the binary data into Python and parsing it as if it were a string? Is this the correct way of doing it? binary = get_binary_data() binary_size = get_binary_size() string = None for i in range(len(binary_size)): string += i message = new MyMessage() message.ParseFromString(string) Update: Here's a new example, and a problem: message_length = 512 file = open('foobars.bin', 'rb') eof = False while not eof: data = file.read(message_length) eof = not data if not eof: foo_bar = FooBar() foo_bar.ParseFromString(data) When we get to the foo_bar.ParseFromString(data) line, I get this error: Exception Type: DecodeError Exception Value: Too many bytes when decoding varint. Update 2: It turns out, that the padding on the binary data was throwing protobuf off; too many bytes were being sent in, as the message suggests (in this case it was referring to the padding). This padding comes from using the C++ protobuf function, SerializeToArray on a fixed-length buffer. To eliminate this, I have used this temproary code: message_length = 512 file = open('foobars.bin', 'rb') eof = False while not eof: data = file.read(message_length) eof = not data string = '' for i in range(0, len(data)): byte = data[i] if byte != '\xcc': # yuck! string += data[i] if not eof: foo_bar = FooBar() foo_bar.ParseFromString(string) There is a design flaw here I think. I will re-implement my C++ code so that it writes variable length arrays to the binary file. As advised by the protobuf documentation, I will prefix each message with it's binary size so that I know how much to read when I'm opening the file with Python.

• Why aren't my objects sorting with sortedArrayUsingDescriptors?

  I expected the code below to return the objects in imageSet as a sorted array. Instead, there's no difference in the ordering before and after. I don't know why sorting on managed objects would work any differently than on "regular" objects, but maybe it matters.   I'm using a NetStream in Data Generation Mode to play an embeded FLV using appendBytes. When the stream is finished playing, I'd like to loop the FLV file. I'm not sure how to achieve this. If you just try to call appendBytes again after that, it doesn't work, presumably because I'm appending the full byte array which has the FLV header and stuff? I'm not very familiar with how that all works. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  Environment: Jboss, Mysql, JPA, Hibernate Our web application will be catering to a large amount of users (~ 1,000,000) and there are a lots of child table where user specific data are stored (e.g. personal, health, forum contributions ...). What would be the best practice to archive user & user specific information. [a] Would it be wise to move the archived user & user specific information to their respective tables within the same database (e.g. user_archive, user_forum_comments_archive ...) OR [b] Would you just mark the database entries with a flag in the original table(s) and just query only non archived entries. We have a unique constraint on User.loginid, how do you handle this requirement if the users are archived via 1-[a] (i.e if a user with loginid 'samuel' gets moved into the archive table and if a new user gets added with the same name in the original table, how would you prevent this. What would be the best strategy to address the unique key constraints. We have a requirement to selectively archive records and bring it back if necessary, will you rely on database tools are would you handle this via your persistence APIs exposed by the JPA entity model.

• Generating MySQL UPDATE statements containing BLOB image data

  I'm trying to write an SQL statement that will generate an SQL script that will update a BLOB field with an IMAGE being selected from the database. This is what I have: select concat( 'UPDATE `IMAGE` SET THUMBNAIL = ', QUOTE( THUMBNAIL ), ' WHERE ID = ', ID, ';' ) as UPDATE_STATEMENT from IMAGE; In the above, THUMBNAIL is a BLOB field containing raw image data. When I run the resulting script I get the following error: ERROR at line 2: Unknown command '\\'. I first tried this without the QUOTE() function, like so: select concat( 'UPDATE `IMAGE` SET THUMBNAIL = \'', THUMBNAIL, '\' WHERE ID = ', ID, ';' ) as UPDATE_STATEMENT from IMAGE; Running the resulting script produces this error: ERROR at line 2: Unknown command '\0'. What is the proper function to apply to this BLOB field in the select, so the UPDATE statements will work? If context is required, I'm looking to migrate thumbnails generated on one server to another server for certain image IDs only. I would use mysqldump, but I don't want to clobber the entire table. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• PHP Session data not being saved

  I have one of those "I swear I didn't touch the server" situations. I honestly didn't touch any of the php scripts. The problem I am having is that php data is not being saved across different pages or page refreshes. I know a new session is being created correctly because I can set a session variable (e.g. $_SESSION['foo'] = "foo" and print it back out on the same page just fine. But when I try to use that same variable on another page it is not set! Is there any php functions or information I can use on my hosts server to see what is going on? Here is an example script that does not work on my hosts' server as of right now: <?php session_start(); if(isset($_SESSION['views'])) $_SESSION['views'] = $_SESSION['views']+ 1; else $_SESSION['views'] = 1; echo "views = ". $_SESSION['views']; echo '<p><a href="page1.php">Refresh</a></p>'; ?> The 'views' variable never gets incremented after doing a page refresh.   Ok so I'm trying to build this stat tracker for my app and I have built a data model object called statTracker that keeps track of all the stuff I want it to. The Pointy Haired Boss(PHB) needs to add/remove items from the menu on a daily basis, so I stored all dishes with MySQL, and created a page which will load all menu items as buttons. When clicked, the button will UPDATE the item, turning it on or off. I need form data to detect which button was pressed, so my query knows which $menuItem to UPDATE.   Hello, May be i am not able to express my doubt properly in this question but still i will try. Basically i created a simple socket based chat program and everything works fine. But i think i have made many patches in it from the design point of view. I have used ObjectInputStream and ObjectOutputStreams in my program. The question i want to ask is how do i identify the different type of data that i send across the network? say if it is simple String type object i directly add to List<String> chatMessages. Now if want to ban certain users i created an another class :- public class User{ private String name; private String id; //getters and setters } This User class means no importance to me till now but i only created it to properly identify the action. Thus if i receive an instanceOf User i can be sure that some user is to be banned. That way i dont have to hardcode strings. I mean first i thought of sending something like "Banned User :" + userName and then i used to check if string startsWith "Banned User :" then i take some action :p. I've created a User class but it means no importance to me in my program. I want to know whether directly sending strings is good way or create a class for every action that is good. If i am not clear please let me know. If i have hundreds of action do i have to create hundreds of classes so i can check via instanceOf? Say now if i plan to create a BUZZ like facility that is available in yahoo messenger. Should i again create an another class named BUZZ? so it can be identified easily?

• Data synchronization using XMPP

  Hi: I'm looking for some insight/advice on synchronizing data over XMPP. I've never developed anything for XMPP before so excuse me if some of my questions seem ridiculous. Basically, what I have is a decentralized social network. Each person has it's own Web site (or server) with a unique URI (one domain could host many servers). Each of these servers can have many clients. E.g., a desktop application, mobile application, etc. What I would like to accomplish is near real-time synchronization/communication between client and server, e.g., I update something on my desktop application, I see it change on my Web site. My server and client code is Python. So, I would like to make use of SleekXMPP if possible (it's license seems to have changed to MIT). I was thinking, and here is where I need advice, that each server would register an account at a dedicated XMPP server, e.g., [email protected]. and then I could use different resources for clients [email protected]/client1, [email protected]/client2, etc. If anyone can register any username, then maybe I also need some intermediate service (since it's decentralized, i'm not sure how to control registrations). Another option, I guess, is that each server runs it's own xmpp server. Assuming, that was all worked out, if I want to broadcast messages to all my resources (except the sending one), how do I do that? Do I have to subscribe to myself? This also seems like a good candidate for publish-subscribe, let me know if you think that could work and what the design/flow of that process would be. thanks :)

• Modify post data with a custom MVC extension?

  So I'm looking into writing some custom MVC extensions and the first one I'm attempting to tackle is a FormattedTextBox to handle things such as currency, dates, and times. I have the rendering of it working perfectly, formatting it, working with strong types and everything all golden. However, the problem I'm now running into is cleaning up the formatted stuff when the page posts the data back. Take for example, a currency format. Let's use USD for these examples. When an object has a property as a decimal, the value would be 79.95. Your edit view would be something like: <%= Html.FormattedTextBox(model => Model.Person.HourlyWage, "{0:C}") %> This is all well and good for the GET request, but upon POST, the value is going to be $79.95, which when you assign to that decimal, gets unhappy very quickly and ends up shoving a 0 in there. So my question is, how do I get code working somewhere to work with that value before the MVC Framework goes and starts shoving it back into my ViewModel? I'd much rather this be done server-side than client-side. Thanks!!

  I'm confused about what to do... I'm working on a user's page where they can view certain things only if their supervisor has given them "money" or "credits". I need a simple way to get the person that is their supervisor by doing something like: $data['employer'] = $this->home_model->getEmployees(array('user_id'=>$manager_id)); Basically, get the user information about a person who's user_id matches the manager_id of the currently logged in member. I don't know how to set the variable $manager_id. Additional Information: The current user has an id, and a manager_id. I need the id of the manager. So, I need to grab the manager_id of the logged-in user and find the manager who's user_id is that of the manager_id. What's the process to do this? I can get each individually, but I don't know how to use one to get the other... I know it is confusing, but I'm confused! Thanks for the help!

• Handle row deletion in UITableViewController

  Hello, I hava a UINavigationController. The first level is a UITableViewController, the second level just shows details on one of the items of the table view. In this detail view, I can delete the item. It deletes the underlying managed object. When I pop back to the view, I have a crash. I understand why, it's because I didn't update the cached array that contains the data. I looked at several tutorials and I don't exactly understand how am I supposed to handle deletion. Maybe I don't understand exactly where I should fetch the objects in the model. Should I do a query for every cellForRowAtIndexPath and take the item in the result at position indexPath.row? It doesn't look efficient. Should I check for changes somewhere and recache the whole query in an array. I would think CoreData would provide something more natural but I couldn't find it so far.   I'm building a controller to manage group based ACL in CakePHP and when I create or edit a group I want to be able to select what permissions it has. The group data table only stores a group ID and a group Name as the permissions are stored in the ACO/ARO table. I have an array from the ACO that I want to turn into a set of checkboxes so you can check them to allow access from that group to that ACO. So first off, how do I turn this array into a set of checkboxes. The array looks like this: array( [0] => array( [Aco] => array( [alias] => 'alias' [id] => 1) [children] => array ( [0] => array( [Aco]=> ...etc )) [1] => array( ...etc ) My next question is how can I check these once the form has been submitted to the controller to allow the selected actions? [Update] Ok changing the angle of my question, how can I use the Form helper to create forms that are not based on any Model?

• Searching a column containing CSV data in a MySQL table for existence of input values

  Hi, I have a table say, ITEM, in MySQL that stores data as follows: ID FEATURES -------------------- 1 AB,CD,EF,XY 2 PQ,AC,A3,B3 3 AB,CDE 4 AB1,BC3 -------------------- As an input, I will get a CSV string, something like "AB,PQ". I want to get the records that contain AB or PQ. I realized that we've to write a MySQL function to achieve this. So, if we have this magical function MATCH_ANY defined in MySQL that does this, I would then simply execute an SQL as follows: select * from ITEM where MATCH_ANY(FEAURES, "AB,PQ") = 0 The above query would return the records 1, 2 and 3. But I'm running into all sorts of problems while implementing this function as I realized that MySQL doesn't support arrays and there's no simple way to split strings based on a delimiter. Remodeling the table is the last option for me as it involves lot of issues. I might also want to execute queries containing multiple MATCH_ANY functions such as: select * from ITEM where MATCH_ANY(FEATURES, "AB,PQ") = 0 and MATCH_ANY(FEATURES, "CDE") In the above case, we would get an intersection of records (1, 2, 3) and (3) which would be just 3.   I'm trying to figure out the best way to manage my controller(s) and models for a particular use case. I'm building a review system where a User may build a review of several distinct types with a Polymorphic Reviewable. Country (has_many reviews & cities) Subdivision/State (optional, sometimes it doesnt exist, also reviewable, has_many cities) City (has places & review) Burrow (optional, also reviewable ex: Brooklyn) Neighborhood (optional & reviewable, ex: williamsburg) Place (belongs to city) I'm also wondering about adding more complexity. I also want to include subdivisions occasionally... ie for the US, I might add Texas or for Germany, Baveria and have it be reviewable as well but not every country has regions and even those that do might never be reviewed. So it's not at all strict. I would like it to as simple and flexible as possible. It'd kinda be nice if the user could just land on one form and select either a city or a country, and then drill down using data from say Foursquare to find a particular place in a city and make a review. I'm really not sure which route I should take? For example, what happens if I have a Country, and a City... and then I decide to add a Burrow? Could I give places tags (ie Williamsburg, Brooklyn) belong_to NY City and the tags belong to NY? Tags are more flexible and optionally explain what areas they might be in, the tags belong to a city, but also have places and be reviewable? So I'm looking for suggestions for anyone who's done something related. Using Rails 3.2, and mongoid.

  Hi folks Any ideas how to get the serilized data from this function? the html is first with the JQuery function last, I cannot get the serialization to appear in the alert.
