    Is it possible to download A torrent file completely and quickly with no uploading, and then after seed the file to be uploaded by other users? I'm finding that the downloading process is incredibly slow while downloading some torrent file with incredibly high upload rates. Is it possible to speed up the downloading rate by cutting off uploading completley until the file has been completely downloaded??

  • Technical details for Server 2012 de-duplication feature

    Now that Windows Server 2012 comes with de-duplication features for NTFS volumes I am having a hard time finding technical details about it. I can deduce from the TechNet documentation that the de-duplication action itself is an asynchronous process - not unlike how the SIS Groveler used to work - but there is virtually no detail about the implementation (algorithms used, resources needed, even the info on performance considerations is nothing but a bunch rule-of-thumb-style recommendations). Insights and pointers are greatly appreciated, a comparison to Solaris' ZFS de-duplication efficiency for a set of scenarios would be wonderful.

  • Is data=journal on a separate device on Ext4 as good as using a RAID controller with battery backed cache for file system consistency?

    It seems to me that data=journal prevents file system inconsistency in the case of power failure. Using it with a dedicated journal device mitigates the performance penalty of writing the data twice. A power outage would still lose the data that is currently being written to the journal, but the file system on disk would always be consistent. If that amount of loss is acceptable, is a RAID controller with battery backed cache really worthwhile?

  • Benchmark virtual machines?

    I'm looking for a good way to benchmark the performance of Ubuntu machines (preferably from the command line - only care about harddrive speed, memory, and cpu - not graphics). Are there any programs that could also be used on Mac or Windows so I could compare the results against an Apple or PC Desktop? Ultimately I'd like to use these benchmarks to compare different virtual machine configurations (speeds on different hosts and different hardware to get practical idea of the differences between different setups a rigs). I would also like a section that shows the tasks for today and another for high-priority tasks coming up within a week. I have not programmed in Excel before. I know Python and JavaScript, but want an Excel solution that runs inside Excel (maybe using VBA, the Excel programming language). Is this sort of thing possible in Excel?

  • i7 4770k or i7 4930k - Which for faster compile times? [on hold]

    I've looked up comparisons and found that single core performance seems to be better on i7 4770k, but has less cores that the i7 4930k. Would VS take advantage of extra cores when compiling, or would the difference be negible. I'm looking to buy the PC primarily for programming, so which would be better for visual studio?     Hi, I have Windows 7 64bit, 8gb ram and 1152mb is hardware reserved which leaves me with 7039mb of physical memory available as I can see on the task manager. What is the advantage or disadvantage of keeping it this way? If I disable it from the MSCONFIG, the hardware reserved comes down to 1mb. Well, which way I should keep it for best performance in all meanings considering that nowdays, 8gb is still a lot. Could someone explain the easy way please?

    I have three 23" monitors attached to 2 cards: Geforce GT 220 (1gb) Geforce 8400 GS (512mb) My System is quad core (Q8300 @ 2.50Ghz) 6GB Ram 64-bit windows 7 professional I have 2 monitors connected to the GT 220 and they work perfectly. I have 1 monitor (was hoping to attach another one) to the 8400 The monitor atatched to the 8400 is quite slow and jerky. What can i do to improve the performance? I disabled aero theme, didn't make much difference (if any)

    Are there any tools that can be used to connect to windows 2008 servers, and get a comparison of the installed patches/updates on the servers, showing what is installed on one and not on the other? This is to help isolate an issue we are seeing on a specific windows server, in a load balanced setup.     What is the point of pruning old objects from Active Directory, especially computer accounts? If a computer is wiped or destroyed, then the stale computer account doesn't pose any security risk because it can't be used any more. And I can't imagine that stale objects affect performance very much, because if they aren't being changed then they aren't being replicated. So, what is the real motivation to keep Active Directory clean of stale objects?

Ideally, most of its features would be focused on: the text editing itself - clever replaces, indentation control, etc, and separating the content from its presentation, à la HTML/CSS.
