• JRockit R28/JRockit Mission Control 4.0 is out!

  The next major release of JRockit is finally out! Here are some highlights: Includes the all new JRockit Flight Recorder – supersedes the old JRockit Runtime Analyser. The new flight recorder is inspired by the “black box” in airplanes. It uses a highly efficient recording engine and thread local buffers to capture data about the runtime and the application running in the JVM. It can be configured to always be on, so that whenever anything “interesting” happens, data can be dumped for some time back. Think of it as your own personal profiling time machine. Automatic shortest path calculation in Memleak – no longer any need for running around in circles when trying to find your way back to a thread root from an instance. Memleak can now show class loader related information and split graphs on a per class loader basis. More easily configured JMX agent – default port for both RMI Registry and RMI Server can be configured, and is by default the same, allowing easier configuration of firewalls. Up to 64 GB (was 4GB) compressed references. Per thread allocation profiling in the Management Console. Native Memory Tracking – it is now possible to track native memory allocations with very high resolution. The information can either be accessed using JRCMD, or the dedicated Native Memory Tracking experimental plug-in for the Management Console (alas only available for the upcoming 4.0.1 release). JRockit can now produce heap dumps in HPROF format. Cooperative suspension – JRockit is no longer using system signals for stopping threads, which could lead to hangs if signals were lost or blocked (for example bad NFS shares). Now threads check periodically to see if they are suspended. VPAT/Section 508 compliant JRMC – greatly improved keyboard navigation and screen reader support. • Scrum for Team Foundation Server 2010

  I will be presenting a session on “Scrum for TFS2010” not once, but twice! If you are going to be at the Aberdeen Partner Group meeting on 27th April, or DDD Scotland on 8th May then you may be able to catch my session. Credit: I want to give special thanks to Aaron Bjork from Microsoft who provided me with most of my material He is a Scrum and Power Point genius. Scrum for Team Foundation Server 2010 Synopsis Visual Studio ALM (formerly Visual Studio Team System (VSTS)) and Team Foundation Server (TFS) are the cornerstones of development on the Microsoft .NET platform. These are the best tools for a team to have successful projects and for the developers to have a focused and smooth software development process. For TFS 2010 Microsoft is heavily investing in Scrum and has already started moving some teams across to using it. Martin will not be going in depth with Scrum but you can find out more about Scrum by reading the Scrum Guide and you can even asses your Scrum knowledge by having a go at the Scrum Open Assessment. • Good Scoop: The PeopleSoft/IBM Backstory

  Sometimes you're searching for something online and you find an unrelated, bonus nugget. Last week I stumbled across an interesting blog post from Chris Heller of a PeopleSoft consulting shop in San Ramon, CA called Grey Sparling. I don't know these guys. But Chris, who apparently used to work on the PeopleTools team, wrote a great article on a pre-acquisition, would-be deal between IBM and PeopleSoft that would have standardized PeopleSoft on IBM technology. The behind-the-scenes perspective is interesting. His commentary on the challenges that the company and PeopleSoft customers would have encountered if the deal had gone through was also interesting: ·         "No common ownership. It's hard enough to get large groups of people to work together when they work for the same company, but with two separate companies it is much, much harder. Even within Oracle, progress on Fusion applications was slow until Thomas Kurian took over Fusion applications in addition to Fusion middleware." ·         "No customer buy-in. PeopleSoft customers weren't asking for a conversion to WebSphere, so the fact that doing that could have helped PeopleSoft stay independent wouldn't have meant much to them, especially since the cost of moving to whatever a "PeopleSoft built on WebSphere" would have been significant." ·         "No executive buy-in. This is related to the previous point, but it's worth calling out separately. If Oracle had walked away and the deal with IBM had gone through, and PeopleSoft customers got put through the wringer as part of WebSphere move, all of the PeopleSoft project teams would be put in the awkward position of explaining to their management why these additional costs and headaches were happening. Essentially they would need to "sell" the partnership internally to their own management team. That's not a fun conversation to have." I'm not surprised that something like this was in the works. But I did find the inside scoop and Heller's perspective on the challenges particularly interesting.   While working with data it’s not always required that we fetch all the records. Many a times we only need to fetch the first record, or some records in some index, in the record set. With LINQ we can get the desired record very easily with the help of the provided element operators. Simple get the first record. If you want only the first record in record set we can use the first method [Note that this can also be done easily done with the help of the take method by providing the value as one].     List<Product> products = GetProductList();      Product product12 = (         from prod in products         where prod.ProductID == 12         select prod)         .First();   We can also very easily put some condition on which first record to be fetched.     string[] strings = { "zero", "one", "two", "three", "four", "five", "six", "seven", "eight", "nine" };     string startsWithO = strings.First(s => s[0] == 'o');  In the above example the result would be “one” because that is the first record starting with “o”.  Also the fact that there will be chances that there are no value returned in the result set. • Inside Red Gate - Divisions

  When I joined Red Gate back in 2007, there were around 80 people in the company. Now, around 3 years later, it's grown to more than 200. It's a constant battle against Dunbar's number; the maximum number of people you can keep track of in a social group, to try and maintain that 'small company' feel that attracted myself and so many others to apply in the first place. There are several strategies the company's developed over the years to try and mitigate the effects of Dunbar's number. One of the main ones has been divisionalisation. Divisions The first division, .NET, appeared around the same time that I started in 2007. This combined the development, sales, marketing and management of the .NET tools (then, ANTS Profiler v3) into a separate section of the office. The idea was to increase the cohesion and communication between the different people involved in the entire lifecycle of the tools; from initial product development, through to marketing, then to customer support, who would feed back to the development team. This was such a success that the other development teams were re-worked around this model in 2009. Nowadays there are 4 divisions - SQL Tools, DBA, .NET, and New Business. Along the way there have been various tweaks to the details - the sales teams have been merged into the divisions, marketing and product support have been (mostly) centralised - but the same basic model remains. So, how has this helped? As Red Gate has continued to grow over the years, divisionalisation has turned Red Gate from a monolithic software company into what one person described as a 'federation of small businesses'. Each division is free to structure itself as it sees fit, it's free to decide what to concentrate development work on, organise its own newsletters and webinars, decide its own release schedule. Each division is its own small business. In terms of numbers, the size of each division varies from 20 people (.NET) to 52 (SQL Tools); well below Dunbar's number. From a developer's perspective, this means organisational structure is very flat & wide - there's only 2 layers between myself and the CEOs (not that it matters much; everyone can go and have a chat to Neil or Simon, or anyone else inbetween, whenever they want. Provided you can catch them at their desk!). As Red Gate grows, and expands into new areas, new divisions will be created as needed, old ones merged or disbanded, but the division structure will help to maintain that small-company feel that keeps Red Gate working as it does.
