• Recommendations on eReader for technical reference material

  I’ve been thinking that an eBook reader would be handy since I travel a lot.  I’m not really all that worried about taking novels and pleasure reading as much as taking along work related books and reference material. I haven’t really done a lot of research into the various options (Sony, Kindle, Nook, iPad, etc.) but am aware that not all content can be read on all readers even if it is in ePub format due to DRM. Anybody got a recommendation on which device/store combination offers the best selection of technical reference for a .Net developer with a particular interest in software process engineering? HELP!! • How to install and make development use of gtk+ on Ubuntu 12.04

  I want to install gtk+ in order to make an application with a graphical environment.I went to the official website of gtk(gtk.org) and I tried to follow the instructions,but I wasn't able to make it work.I think that I have successfully managed to do the whole process till the part that I had to run make install and after that ldconfig.So far so good.After that though the complete chaos.I do not know how to set all these configurations so I can make my compilers know where to look for the include files.I just want to make it work in my Ubuntu when I start making a source file and then compile it and run it.

• Record Screen Activity with CamStudio

  Sometimes a visual demonstration works much better than a list of instructions. If you need to make a demo video for family and/or friends then you might want to have a look at CamStudio. Using CamStudio To get properly set up you will need to install two different files (the main program followed by the codec). Once that is done you are ready to get started. When you start the program you will see a surprisingly small window. Notice the highlighted Record to text…it serves as a visual indicator for the video type selected for recording. Before you start creating a video it would be a good idea to look through some of the settings. The first one to look at is the region or area that you want to record. Next you will want to look through the video options since these will affect the quality and final size of your video files. The default setting for quality is 70…adjust that to the level that best suits your needs. Note: For our example we maxed out the various video settings for best quality. On our system Microsoft Video 1 was listed as the default compressor but as you can see there were other options available. You can configure the settings for the compressor you want to use if desired. Keep in mind that each compressor will have unique settings of their own, so if you change it, be certain to go back and check. We decided to use the CamStudio Lossless Codec for our example (it gave the best results while trying the software). Going back to the main window you can toggle back and forth between .avi and .swf output using the last button. Once you are satisfied with the settings click on the red record button to start. If you need to pause while recording or stop recording click on the system tray icon and select the appropriate command. When you are finished recording, you will be presented with the save file window. Browse for the desired save location and name your new file. Once you have saved the file the movie player window will automatically open so that you view your new video. Our sample video shown here is at 50% of original size so may look slightly “gritty”. The detail was much better at 100%. If you decide to record and save as .swf the process will be identical to recording in .avi format until the movie player window opens. At that time the conversion process from .avi to .swf will begin. When complete you will have a new flash video and html file that goes with it. Depending on which browser you have set as default, you may run into a small problem when the preview for your new .swf file tries to open. There is a small bug in the generated html file. You can use this work-around or… Just open the .swf file directly in your favorite browser. Conclusion CamStudio may not produce the highest quality videos, but it’s free and does a very nice job nonetheless. If you are working on a tight budget or only need to make an occasional video then CamStudio is a very sensible choice. • What commands are needed to install Ubuntu Core?

  Ubuntu Core's wiki page page contains the instructions to install Ubuntu Core on a target media: Uncompress (do not unpack) rootfs Format target media: at least one partition should be ext2, ext3, or ext4 Unpack Ubuntu Core to ext{2,3,4} partition Install boot-loader Install Linux If the Linux kernel requires modules, add these to /lib/modules/$(uname -r) in the ext{2,3,4} file system Boot the target device Install any additional required software using apt-get But what are the specific commands to do the above? The things I'm specifically confused about are: Uncompressing and unpacking, what's the difference and how do I do them? What package should I install if I want the generic kernel provided in regular Ubuntu installation? I won't be installing any drivers or anything related to kernel other than what's provided in the repos, do I need to worry about manually adding kernel modules? PS I would like to request that all the commands used in the installation process be mentioned in the answer, for the benefit of ones who're completely unfamiliar and myself, should I ever forget.

  I am new to game development but familiar with programming languages. I have started using Flixel and have a working Breakout game with score and lives. I am just stuck on how I can create a new screen/game over screen if a player runs out of lives. • Low level Linux graphics

  For educational purposes, I'd like to write an application on a Linux environment that can process keyboard events and draw graphics without huge dependencies like X or SDL. I presume that this must be possible, because X and SDL are just programs themselves, so they must rely on other methods inherent to the environment. Is this understanding correct? If so, where might I learn to write such a program? My limited experience tells me that it would involve making calls to the kernel, and/or writing to special files; however, I haven't been able to find any tutorials on the matter (I am not even sure what to Google). Also, in case it is relevant, I am running Debian Squeeze on Virtualbox. I have used a netinst cd without networking, so there isn't much installed on it currently. I will install gcc, but I am hoping I can get by with nothing more.

  I am creating a process for a client who is a chapel. They have people who sign up to receive notifications of a death anniversary. I exported a CSV from the db, imported it into Mailchimp and I was about to launch a Mailchimp automation based on a date. Not I realized that are many instances where the same person singed up for multiple death reminders. Mailchimp doesn't allow for duplicate email addresses in one list. Is there another service or application that I can use for this?

• MySQL fails to start after upgrade to 12.04?

  I'm a newbie on MySQL ground so bear with me. I've just finished upgrading 11.10 to 12.04. Everything seemed to work without any hiccups and all my software and settings are working fine. Apart from MySQL. When I try: sudo start mysql I receive an error: start: Job failed to start Where can I possibly diagnose what the problem is? And (hopefully) - how to sort it out? (I disabled automatic start following advice here if that is of some importance) Update 1: Both outputs of: cat /var/log/mysql.err cat /var/log/mysql.log are empty. Output of dmesg | grep mysql: [ 1401.785141] type=1400 audit(1335619832.181:25): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_replace" name="/usr/sbin/mysqld" pid=16165 comm="apparmor_parser" [ 1401.791089] init: Failed to spawn mysql main process: unable to execute: No such file or directory Update 2: As indicated by AWinter below - it seemed that MySQL disappeared automagically after upgrade and had to be reinstalled.

• Analiytics: Can I set a goal on multiple events?

  We have a popup dialogue that requests users email address or facebook login. The page behind the popup loads, so a page view is counted. We want to measure: How many users ignored the popup completely How many users engaged the popup, but don't complete the process (we trigger an event when the user performs actions defined as "engaging") How many users completed the popup Bounce rates aren't telling because some users won't receive the popup. We are basically triggering events "PopupDisplayed" "PopupEngaged" and "PopupComplete", with labels to differentiate between email and facebook. But I don't think I can set goals to count "Users who received 'PopupDisplayed' AND 'PopupComplete'" events, so I can count how many users both saw the popup and completed it.

• Were you a good programmer when you first left university?

  I recently graduated, from university. I have since then joined a development team where I am by far the least experienced developer, with maybe with a couple work terms under my belt, meanwhile the rest of the team is rocking 5-10 years experience. I am/was a very good student and a pretty good programmer when it came to bottled assignments and tests. I have worked on some projects with success. But now I working with a much bigger code-base, and the learning curve is much higher... I was wondering how many other developers started out their careers in teams and left like they sucked. When does this change? How can I speed up the process? My seniors are helping me but I want to be great and show my value now. I don't to start a flame war, this is just a question I have been having and I was hoping to get some advice from other experienced developers, as well as other beginners like me.

• Ubuntu, Gnome, PAM and ecryptfs

  I would like to have a directory accessible to a couple of users, and not readable by maintenance types ... I can do what I want using ecryptfs and a password known only to the "couple of users" in question, who then can mount the directory and use as they see fit. I would love to be able to automate that process and unlock the directory at login - again, only for the "couple users" in question, without asking a password. Gnome-keyring is able to store passphrases/passwords encrypted; and, apparently, if I could get a key identity to ecryptfs, Gnome PAM modules would allow the key with that identity to be unlocked, and the directory could be mounted. Alas, I have found no way to go from point A (Gnome PAM keyring module) to point B (use the unlocked key in ecryptfs). Another use of the same mechanism would allow to build a "key escrow" mechanism, where keys to encrypted volumes are safekept with, e.g., HR; so that company information in encrypted directories can be recovered if you pass under the proverbial bus.

• High CPU load - Ubuntu 14.04

  I noticed that sometimes when browsing (with other processes in the background), I get very high CPU load for the browser process (over 100%) and the computer becomes really slow. I tried switching from Firefox (with just a few extensions) to Chromium, but same thing happens without me visiting graphics-intense sites, flash sites or anything like that. I also noticed python or node (when running "make") produce the same high CPU load from time to time so this is not necessarily browser-related. When I only have a browser open, it doesn't seem to happen and everything is fine in Windows 7. I switched from unity to gnome3 with no effect. Specs: lenovo w510 (4gb RAM, i7 q820 @ 1.73) + up to date Ubuntu 14.04 64bit. Printscreen: http://imgur.com/8MZJNKC Do you guys have any idea why this might happen? • libssh2 and simultaneous connections

  I'm writing a node.js C++ module using the C library libssh2. The module is supposed to be a bridge to connect to SSH over HTTPS. Right now, I'm still in the design/learning phase of v8 API and C++, and I have a design question: libssh2 is a C library, all its methods are global. From what I see in the examples, libssh2 can only handle one connection at a time. If I want to allow simultaneous connections to different SSH servers, do I have to fork a process to completely separate the libssh2 "instances", or is forking a thread enough? I don't know enough of the separation limit used there. Any idea on how to handle this is appreciated.

  I'm considering outsourcing a part of our web application development project for freelancers, namely the site building part. What I mean by site building is the process of creating the xhtml/css template files, with dummy content, from a psd file (or any other graphical layout file). The resulting xhtml/css files will be used by our developers as templates for cms based page rendering. The cms in this case is Drupal, but that might not be of much relevance. I'm looking for a good set of requirements, that will result in good quality xhtml/css code, complying with today's standards leaves little to the freelancer developer's imagination in terms of what I need I'm thinking about requirements like: Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional document type, validated by validator.w3.org Identical rendering in all modern browsers (FF, Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE7-8) and also in IE6 All opening and closing block-level elements should be properly commented, referencing the functional part of the user interface they belong to (menu, toolbar, content, etc) No inline CSS definitions And so on. How would you organize a list like that? What requirements would you add?

  Last month Oracle renominated Apache to the Java Executive Committee because we valued their active participation and perspective on Java. Earlier this week, by an overwhelming majority, the Java Executive Committee voted to move Java forward by formally initiating work on both Java SE 7 and SE 8 based on their technical merits. Apache voted against initiating technical committee work on both SE 7 and SE 8, effectively voting against moving Java forward. Now, despite supporting the technical direction, Apache have announced that they are quitting the Executive Committee. Oracle has a responsibility to move Java forward and to maintain the uniformity of the Java standard for the millions of Java developers and the majority of Executive Committee members agree. • Error 107 (net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR): SSL protocol error on localhost

  Background: I set up a cloud server and have have a website running SSL, it was all pretty strait forward following these instructions and following the instructions given by the SSL certificate issuer. I then went to set up development site on my local machine the same way but using self signed certs using these instructions. I have checked that port 443 is open and this post suggests it is a bad configuration on the server. I have gone through the set up process twice, yet I have been unable to find out what I have done wrong or missed. Does anyone else know what I may have have missed to get this error? Note: As the links suggest this is on 12.04.
