• Recommended drive encryption solution

  Hello, I will soon be purchasing a number of laptops running Windows 7 for our mobile staff. Due to the nature of our business I will need drive encryption. Windows BitLocker seems the obvious choice, but it looks like I need to purchase either Windows 7 Enterprise or Ultimate editions to get it. Can anyone offer suggestions on the best course of action: a) Use BitLocker, bite the bullet and pay to upgrade to Enterprise/Ultimate b) Pay for another 3rd party drive encryption product that is cheaper (suggestions appreciated) c) Use a free drive encryption product such as TrueCrypt Ideally I am also interested in 'real world' experience from people who are using drive encryption software and any pitfalls to look out for. Many thanks in advance... UPDATE Decided to go with TrueCrypt for the following reasons: a) The product has a good track record b) I am not managing a large quantity of laptops so integration with Active Directory, Management consoles etc is not a huge benefit c) Although eks did make a good point about Evil Maid (EM) attacks, our data is not that desirable to consider it a major factor d) The cost (free) is a big plus but not the primary motivator The next problem I face is imaging (Acronis/Ghost/..) encrypted drives will not work unless I perform sector-by-sector imaging. That means an 80Gb encrypted partition creates an 80Gb image file :(

• SBS DC DNS entries going missing?

  I've been looking at a problem on a friends SBS (2003) server where the client PC's aren't able to connect to the server with a variety of errors reported. Checking the server itself the only indicator of an issue is an error 5782: Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed with the following error: No DNS servers configured for the local system. Running a dcdiag reports that there are no DNS records registered for the DC so I fixed the problem by doing a netdiag /fix after which the dcdiag comes back clean and clients are ok again. It happened a few weeks ago as well and the same fix solved it. What are the possible causes of the DC DNS entries going missing? Is this a config option that needs tweaking or could it be solved by something simple like scheduling the SBS server to re-boot periodically? The only change they can think of that was made near to the time of the first instance of this problem occurring is that RRAS was started up to allow for a VPN connection from a home user. NB - The server is setup with a pair of NICs in a team so the server has a single virtual NIC providing both LAN/WAN connections to it. An external hardware firewall is in use rather than the windows firewall.

  Hi, I,m having a web server for testing purposes to host my domain http://www.domain.com which run perfectly. Below is server specs: OS Freebsd 7.2 MySQL 5.1.33 Apache 2.2.11 PHP 5.2.9 I can do alias directory in my httpd.conf so that my domain can have subdirectory hosting in the same server such as httpd://domain.com/subdomain1, httpd://domain.com/subdomain2 and so on. All my subdomain1 and subdomain2 directory folders reside on the same web server but only different location. Below is my example from httpd.conf for the alias subdomain1 block: Alias /subdomain1 "/usr/local/www/subdomain1" <Directory "/usr/local/www/subdomain1"> Options +Indexes AllowOverride None allow from all </Directory> I,m looking a way in order my subdomain1 and subdomain2 directory is read from another server in my LAN but remain hosted as httpd://domain.com/subdomain1. • Serving images from another hostname vs Apache overload for the rewrites

  We are trying to improve further the speed of some sites with older HTML in order as well to obtain better SEO results. We have now applied some minify measures, combined html, css etc. We use a small virtualized infrastructure and we've always wanted to use a light + standar http server configuration so the first one can serve images and static contents vs the other one php, rewrites, etc. We can easily do that now with a VM using the same files and conf of vhosts (bind mounts) on apache but with hardly any modules loaded. This means the light httpd will have smaller fingerprint that would allow us to serve more and quicker, have more minSpareServer running, etc. So, as browsers benefit from loading static content from different hostnames as well, we've thought about building a rewrite rule on our main server (main.com) to "redirect" all images and css *.jpg, *.gif, *.css etc to the same at say cdn.main.com thus the browser being able to have more connections. The question is, assuming we have a very complex rewrite ruleset already (we manually manipulate many old URLs for SEO) will it be worth? I mean will the additional load of main's apache to have to redirect main.com/image.jpg (I understand we'll have to do a 301) to cdn.main.com/image.jpg + then cdn.main.com having to serve it, be larger than the gain we would be archiving on the browser? Could the excess of 301s of all images on a page be penalized by google? How do large companies work this out, does the original code already include images linked from the cdn with absolute paths?

• Printing on Windows 8 64-Bit through Windows Server 2008 (32 Bit) RemoteApp

  We have a network where our server is running on Windows Server 2008 (32 Bit) and a client computer is running on Windows 8.1 (64 bit) with a local printer attached to the client. The printer is an HP P1006. The remote app works well but when trying to print we get an odd "error 545". We have tried both using the "connect client printer" function in remoteapp and also making the printer shared over the network and printing to it via the network from within the remoteapp. Nothing works. We can print a test page from the server to the client computer just fine, but it seems from remoteapp we cannot. We have also tried installing the 32 bit drivers on the 64 bit machine as both the primary and secondary drivers but cannot get them to install. Suggestions please? We've been going crazy over this issue.

• Multiple subdomains resolving to one domain?

  I'm trying to host an application, but allow the customer to use their own sub domain so that it does not confuse their own customers. So for example, by application would run on app.mydomain.com, but my customer would access it via their own subdomain (app.somedomain.com and/or app.anotherdomain.com). Is this even possible? (Possibly relevant information: my application is hosted on media temple and uses Apache) Thanks!

• Mouse wheel does not work in Excel 2007

  I am running Office 2007 on Windows XP-SP3. My mouse wheel works fine in other applications, meaning that it scrolls information up and down when the mouse is positioned over a given panel. It's even working fine in the other Office 2007 apps, so this is not a hardware or driver problem. It doesn't help to click on a cell to give the worksheet focus. I've tried various Advanced options that people recommend, to no avail: Allow editing directly in cell Zoom on roll with IntelliMouse What the heck, has Microsoft disabled this most useful functionality?

• Same native and tagged vlan possible on Redhat?

  Hi guys and gals, I'm looking at implementing a systems using a number of tagged and a native vlan connected to a server over a a/p bonded interface. The untagged vlan is for physical machine access, the tagged vlans are connected to bridges and then to QEMU VM's inside the machine. Hopefully this plan is fine, but I'm trying to implement a crippled version of this in a dev environment due to a lack of underlying network config in this location where I just have the same single vlan delivered to the machine on a tag AND plain. I'm nto clear if this is going to work (and that I should just be confident that it will work using different vlans) as I'm seeing odd things like a vm is arping out over the vlan out to the core switch, but the arp reply is coming back on the untagged interface. Now an ARP reply is unicast right? So it's a deliberate thing to send the ARP response on the untagged interface, and not a case that a broadcast response isn't being passed on the tagged side... i.e. there's some underlying logic pushing it that way. Something about the MACs somehow? This is on a CentOS 5.5 machine, vlan's from vconfig. (I've seen reference to the Linux mac-vlan project work, but that's not available here by default.) so 1) Should having the SAME vlan tagged and untagged work? 2) Will different tagged vlans to the untagged interface work nice and easily?

• Transfer disk contents *without* cloning tools

  Is it possible to "clone" a disk which contains programs by performing a copy of all the disk contents (preserving file attributes) from source to destination disk, and unplugging the source disk and changing the drive letter of the destination disk to match that of the source? Context I have a two disk Windows 8 system with a system drive and a data drive. Recently, the data drive developed a number of bad sectors leading to IO errors. I have been sent a replacement drive so I simply need to clone the contents of this data drive onto the replacement. The drive contents include documents & media, user folders (My Documents and related), and some programs (games etc). Problem The problem is that the bad sectors on the source disk causes most disk cloning tools to fail with read errors. Attempted approaches include: Disk clone from live boot environment with Acronis True Image. Fails due to read errors. Disk clone from live boot environment with Clonezilla. Fails due to read errors. Disk clone using Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier. Fails due to hardware timeouts in the HDD (application hangs indefinitely). A straightforward copy from source to destination disk using FreeFileSync (preserving file attributes and metadata). This succeeds. So at the moment I have a replacement disk which contains all of the data from the original disk. Now all I need to is somehow get Windows to replace all references to the old disk to the new one. Is this possible by simply swapping the assigned drive letters? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

• Anyone have any experience with bargain laptop batteries?

  I've got an oldish D820 that's got a 100% dead battery. I know that I could, in theory, take it apart and replace bad cells in the battery. I'm not really comfortable with doing that. I also know that there are various places that sell replacement batteries for 20% to 80% of the cost that Dell would charge. Does anyone have any experiences with buying more than a couple of these off-brand batteries? If a battery goes boom, it could be really ugly, so I'd rather not risk it, but at the same time, the dell batteries are really expensive... Any opinions on these ebay / off-brand battery vendors? • How do you configure IIS 7 to use a subdirectory as the default document?

  So I have a website running on a discount asp.net account, and I put an asp.net mvc app in a subdirectory. If my url is 'www.website.com' and my app is in directory 'sample', then 'www.website.com/sample' will execute the mvc app. My problem is that I want the app to be shown when you go to 'www.website.com' not just 'www.website.com/sample'. I have access to the IIS Manager, and I'm sure there are many ways to do this. What's the best way to do this?

• Google Apps bounces bulk emails

  I've an admin@mydomain.com email address which receives emails from clients and delivers it to various people within my company. However, since today I get the following bounce error message when sending an email to this address: Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently: admin@mydomain.com Technical details of permanent failure: Message rejected by Google Groups. Please visit http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=188131 to review our Bulk Email Senders Guidelines. The Bulk Senders Guidelines describe how to send out bulk emails. However, in my case I only receive one email and distribute it to a couple of people within my company. Same problem applies to the team@mydomain.com email address which we use internally. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? UPDATE: I just realized that emails coming from the outside and being sent to this address still work. It just seems to be emails coming from my domain. I found a solution and posted it below.

• How do you close a VMWare Fusion VM Window without shutting it down or suspending it?

The first is: I'm running a virtual machine guest using vmrun and nogui, when I open the VMWare Fusion application, the window library opens but subsequently also opens any window of a running VM. Is there a way to prevent this? Secondly, but related: Once it does pop up or I have that separate VM Window open, is there a way to close the window such that it does not suspend or shutdown the vm i.e. convert it back to nogui mode?

• Multiple SSH private keys for the same host

  How can I store 2 different private SSH keys for the same host? I have tried 2 entries in /etc/ssh/ssh_config for the same host with the different keys, and I've also tried to put both keys in the same file and referencing it from one hosts setting, however both do not work. More detail: I'm running Ubuntu server (12.04) and I want to connect to GitHub via SSH to download the latest source for my projects. There are multiple projects running on the same server and each project has a GitHub repo with it's own unique deloyment key-pair. So the host is always the same (github.com) but the keys need to be different depending on which repo I'm using. Different /etc/ssh/ssh_config versions I have tried: Host github.com IdentityFile /etc/ssh/my_project_1_github_deploy_key StrictHostKeyChecking no Host github.com IdentityFile /etc/ssh/my_project_2_github_deploy_key StrictHostKeyChecking no and this with both keys in the same file: Host github.com IdentityFile /etc/ssh/my_project_github_deploy_keys StrictHostKeyChecking no I've had no luck with either. • Configuring sendmail to use one outbound MTA exclusively

  I have a sendmail problem, and I'm anything but a sendmail guru -- I could use some help. My problem is that I have a system intended to be more or less an "appliance" -- it's not intended to have an admin. Because of this, it needs to be able to "call home" by sending email. As we have configured it, this works fine -- using sendmail, it finds the appropriate relay by looking up an MX record and everything works fine. Now, however, because of security concerns, we want to limit it to using exactly one relay, so for example relay.corp.example.com. Should the user configure it to use, say, fubar.example.com, the mail sending should fail or be deferred. I thought that by configuring sendmail with a /etc/mail/server.switch file containing hosts files without dns, I'd get that effect. This doesn't work -- instead, if it gets mail addressed to foo@example.com, it tries to talk directly to example.com, and ignores the configured server. Any ideas?

  I'm exploring some uses with Squid proxy 2.7 and I have seen a good number of examples for url rewrites that take urls such as: http: //somesitename.com and then the rewriter can change the url to: https: //somesitename.com And those examples work great. What I'm wondering though, is if its possible to do the reverse with a squid url rewriter. that is, to go from https: //somesitename.com to http: //somesitename.com ? Simply trying to edit the script file that handles the rewrites doesn't seem to do the trick. So I was wondering if there are some certain things I have to configure squid to do first, if its even possible to do what I am asking. I have my browser manually set up to have squid as a proxy for all requests and I can see https requests showing up in my squid access.log file (via the CONNECT method).

• GIT Website Deployment

  I am attempting to setup GIT to deploy my project to different locations based on the branch. (I think this is what I want to do anyway). My current setup is this: Local dev machine running Netbeans to make changes. Remote server hosting GIT projects (same server running apache) - 2 subsites exist a test.FQDN.com and a live.FQDN.com What I would like to do is have 1 GIT project (MyProject) and create a new feature branch. Any commits done to the new feature branch would push to test.FQDN.com. Once the features have been tested and then merged into the master branch, it would push to live.FQDN.com. I have looked at GIT's post-receive hooks and was able to use "git checkout -f" command to pull on the test.FQDN.com site however that only pulls the master branch and not the new feature branch. I do not have any funding to use a third party to make this work, and would prefer to stay within GIT but have full root access to the web server if there is a package to install which would help control this. Any suggestions would be great!

• Prevent member of administrator group loging in via Remote Desktop

  In order to support some build processes on our Server 2003 development servers, we require a common user account that has administrative privs. Unfortuantly, this also means that anyone that knows the password can also gain admin privs on a server. Assume that trying to keep the password secret is a failed exercise. Developers that need admin privs already have admin privs so should be able to log in as themselves. So the question is a simple one: is there anything I can configure to prevent people (ab)using the account to gain administrator on servers they shouldn't have administrator on? I'm aware that devs could disable anything that is put in place, but that's then down to process and auditing to track and manage. I don't mind where or how: it can be via the local security policy, group policy, a batch file executed in the user's profile, or something else.

• Easiest way to allow direct HTTPS connection in Intercept mode?

  I know the SSL issue has been beaten to death I'm using DNS redirect to force my clients to use my intercept proxy. As we all know, intercepting HTTPS connection is not possible unless I provide a fake certificate. What I want to achieve here is to allow all HTTPS requests connect directly to the source server, thus bypassing Squid: HTTP connection Proxy by Squid HTTPS connection Bypass Squid and connect directly I spent the past few days goolging and trying different methods but none worked so far. I read about SSL tunneling using the CONNECT method but couldn't find any more information on it. I tried a similar method in using RINETD to forward all traffic going through port 443 of my Squid back to the original IP of www.pandora.com. Unfortunately, I did not realize all other HTTPS requests are also forwarded to the IP of www.pandora.com. For example, https://www.gmail.com also takes me to https://www.pandora.com Since I'm running the Intercept mode, the forwarding needs to be dynamic and match each HTTPS domain name with proper original IP. Can this be done in Squid or iptables? Lastly, I'm directing traffic to my Squid server using DNS zone redirect. For example, a client requests www.google.com, my DNS server directs that request to my Squid IP, then my transparent Squid will proxy that request. Will this set up affect what I'm trying to achieve? I tried many methods but couldn't get it to work. Any takes on how to do this?

• Django fails to find static files served by nginx

  I know this is a really noobish question but I can't find any solution despite finding the problem trivial. I have a django application deployed with gunicorn. The static files are served by the nginx server with the following url : myserver.com/static/admin/css/base.css. However, my django application keep looking for the static files at myserver.com:8001/static/admin/css/base.css and is obviously failing (404). I don't know how to fix this. Is it a django or an nginx problem ? This is a specific question for OSX. Chrome has a built in task manager under "Tools" to look at the process within Chrome, extremely beneficial in locating a stuck page. What is the similar feature in firefox?
