• SCCM Client Push FAIL - Win2000 box

  Hello, When trying to install the SCCM client onto a Windows 2000 box, the install fails. The install script is run through a batch file (CONTENTS: \mdop\SCCM_client\ccmsetup.exe /mp:MDOP /logon smssitecode=MID smsslp=MDOP) hosted on a public area of the network. This script has worked for all machines (mostly Win2003 Server). I've tried enabling all the common services it requires (BITS, IIS Admin, Windows Installer), but it still only runs for a second or two then quits. Here's the piece of the log file where it errors out: [LOG[Couldn't get directory list for directory 'http://MDOP/CCM_Client/ClientPatch'. • Why upgrade from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 R2?

  have been tasked to write a document outlining the best reasons to use SQL 2008 R2 instead of SQL 2005 for my brand new BI project. We have a policy of only using two versions at a time and there are still SQL 2000 boxes around here somewhere....   I'm having a bit of a problem with cronjobs for backups. Next question.. what's the best way to say "lets do it next time?" set the last check date? I know tune2fs can set a bunch of parameters, but how would I get em?

• Variable parsing with Bash and wget

  I'm attempting to use wget in a simple bash script to grab a jpeg image from an Axis camera. This script outputs a file named JPEGOUT, instead of the desired output, which should be a timestamp jpeg (ex: 201209292040.jpg) . Changing the variable in the wget statement from JPEGOUT to $JPEGOUT makes wget fail with "wget: missing URL" error. The weird thing is wget parses the $IP vairable correctly. No luck on the output file name. I've tried single quotes, double quotes, parenthesis: all to no luck. Here's the script !/bin/bash IP=$1 JPEGOUT= date +%Y%m%d%H%M.jpg wget -O JPEGOUT http://$IP/axis-cgi/jpg/image.cgi?resolution=640x480&compression=25 Any ideas on how to get the output file name to parse correctly?

• windowsupdate troubles on windowsxp after april 2014, plus an explorer error message

  I've spent the last couple of days trying to install windows xp from a cd onto my desktop. The installtion is successful, and I can activate windows, but cannot run windows update. The error I receive from windows update is: Error number: 0x80240036 I understand that after april 2014 microsoft is no longer developing new patches, but I have presumed that customers would continue to have access to all the patches that where made up to this date. How can I install these patches? Is this possible? As mentioned, I can install windows and activate, but cannot run windowsupdate (Error number: 0x80240036). Seperately, there is an error with a windows explorer pull down menu (item) that asks: Is this copy of windows legal? How can I get rid of this message? I am not running a pirated, or illegal copy of windows and this message should not be there. I want continue running windows xp without windows update, but I need to get rid of this windows explorer error message.

• Safari corrupting downloads?

  First off, a bit of background: I had to do an erase and install about 2-3 weeks ago, so this is a fresh, up-to-date installation of Snow Leopard we're dealing with. That said, I decided recently to branch out from simply programming PHP in a text editor and explore some of the other technologies I keep hearing about, and picked up Drupal, Joomla, and the Zend Framework from their respective official sites. Latest complete, stable builds for all 3. Drupal and Joomla downloaded without a problem, but when I put them in my /~username/Sites folder, XAMPP pretends they're not there, even if I restart Apache or the laptop itself. Zend's archive won't open at all. Is Safari corrupting the downloads, or are there other issues in play that can be investigated?

• Can I speed up cygwin's fork?

• HTTP Headers - need to check OPTIONS

  I've received the results of a pen test and there is some unwanted exposure in the HTTP OPTIONS where the fact that Frontpage Server Extensions was available (now removed) was reported. I need to run a check on the OPTIONS to see whether it has been removed. The test output from the report is below, I need to recreate it to establish that it has gone but don't know how to check the OPTIONS, I can only find tools that seem to check the "HEAD / HTTP/1.1". Does anyone know how to test this - I'm running a Windows environment? • How to troubleshoot a GPF?

  I get a GPF dialog box out of the blue fairly often (like about 2 hours after I turn on the computer). It basically says that svchost.exe had a failure... (see the corresponding Event Log entry below). Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 5/18/2010 Time: 7:41:16 PM User: N/A Computer: DKHA-IPSA Description: Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0004eaa9. Shortly after this error pops up, the computer pretty much grinds to a halt (e.g. some UI elements on the desktop simply do not respond). And I have to do a hard reboot. How do I troubleshoot this type of thing? P.S. The PC has all the latest patches and nothing is missing in the Device Manager.

• Gmail page works but won't stop loading

  When I open the GMail page in Chrome (9.0.597.102) on OS X (10.6.4), the page works fine and is functional, but it often remains in a "Loading" state, with the loading icon active, for extremely long periods of time. Functionally, there is no problem, since everything is accessible, and the problem is intermittent. Sometimes it immediately completes loading, other times it will claim to be "loading" for hours. My date is correct (as set with time.*.apple.com), and I don't have any Google Labs enabled. Does anyone else have this problem, or know the cause and solution?

• Intel P6100 CPU and Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset

  I have an Asus K52F-BBR5 notebook that uses an Intel P6100 ( 2GHZ 15x multiplier) and HM55 Express Chipset. I'm looking to replace it's 3GB with 8GB. The Crucial database seems to indicate that a PC3-8500 CAS 7 and PC3-10666 CAS 9 will both work. I'm not up to date on the latest DDR3 nomencalature and I'm wondering which would provide better performance. The price difference is negligible. Drawing on past experiences from many many years ago I could make an argument for either based on sync/async bus speed arguments and CAS latency differences but the truth is I don't know enough about the HM55 chipset to know which would be the correct choice. Does anyone know the answer or point me to information that would help me make the choice? I'm pretty sure the performance difference will be somewhat negligible also but still I'd like to make the optimal choice.

• Windows 8.1 killed notebook's wifi

  Was running Windows 8 on a Lenovo G780 and updated to windows 8.1 Wifi does not work anymore, i always receive a dns server not responding error. I have tried using public dns servers from Google but with still no results. I've restarted my router with no results. All other devices on my network are having no trouble at all. I've tried updating the wireless driver but the manufacturers website claims that the Win8.1 driver should be updated with the update from windows. So i cant find a wireless driver... Anyone else having this error and does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?? • Mac OS X Server Open Directory does not push Software Update settings to clients

  I have an Xserve G5 running Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 configured as an Open Directory master. I have also enabled and configured Software Update service on the machine. The SUS is configured to serve Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard clients (see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10297359#10297359) The clients bound to the OD are a variety of Mac's running OS X 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6. In Workgroup Manager, I have created 3 machine groups for each client OS. Each group is configured with a custom SUS URL, and the managed client computers are members accordingly (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10493154#10493154) My problem is that the server pushes the SUS settings to some of the client machines, but not all. When I first configured all this stuff on the server (a few weeks ago) I was closely monitoring a few of the client machines to confirm that they received the custom settings. I noticed that some of the clients (10.4/5/6 alike) seemed to get the settings immediately, others didn't show the new settings until after a reboot. As I said, results are mixed across OS's, but some clients will not "sync" at all. My immediate thought was to unbind/rebind the problematic machines. I did this on several client computers with no success. For example, today I was working on one of the Tiger clients. I noticed it was not pointed at my local SUS, so I checked the OD binding; it was fine. Just to be sure I unbound the machine. Next, I checked WM and confirmed the computer record was gone. I noticed the machine group still had a residual (broken?) member from the unbound client; I manually removed this. Finally, I re-bound the client to OD and re-added the machine to it's correct group in WM. Unfortunately, the client still pings apple's SUS for updates. Just to play it safe I rebooted the client, but to no avail, it will not see my local SUS. To confirm that there is nothing wrong with the server, or the client's connection to it, forcefully pointed the machine at my SUS: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "$LOCAL_SUS_URL" and the machine successfully updated off my local server. Great, successful updates, but problem not solved. I've done exhaustive reading on discussions.apple.com (not saying I read everything, I'm just saying I have read a lot) without a good answer. The discouraging thing is that a lot of OD problems I've read about only result in the sysadmin completely reinstalling the server, or OD, or some other similarly heavy-handed operation. At this point, I am not willing to go that route. I still have hope that I can find the reason for this flaky behavior. If anyone can point me in a helpful direction it would be much appreciated. EDIT: Indeed, some files are being pushed to the client: # from client machine: $ sudo find /Library -type f -name com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist /Library/Managed Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist /Library/Managed Preferences/username/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist A few weeks ago, prior to my (previously mentioned) modifications, the SUS was still running "stock". Which meant it could not serve SL (10.6) machines. At that time, the Software Update settings were setup in WM under User Groups. This didn't make any sense because some users work on multiple machines with different OS's. Before creating Machine Groups in WM, I deleted all the SU settings from the User Group Preferences. This just makes the whole thing more confusing, because when I see a file here: /Library/Managed Preferences/username/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist I assume it's still remaining from the "old" settings, because I wouldn't think a Machine Setting belongs there. • PostgreSQL timezone does not match system timezone

  I have several PostgreSQL 9.2 installations where the timezone used by PostgreSQL is GMT, despite the entire system being "Europe/Vienna". I double-checked that postgresql.conf does not contain timezone setting, so according to the documentation it should fallback to the system's timezone. However, # su -s /bin/bash postgres -c "psql mydb" mydb=# show timezone; TimeZone ---------- GMT (1 row) mydb=# select now(); now ------------------------------- 2013-11-12 08:14:21.697622+00 (1 row) Any hints, where the GMT timezone could come from? • Wireless network not working Linux Mint

  I have a home LAN that I am confident is working properly (I have a Windows 7 and an Ubuntu Desktop machine that both see the router and a working Internet connection). I just installed Linux Mint (Maya) on a new machine and although I can connect to the Internet via a wired (ethernet) connection, it does not see my wireless network. In fact, as you can see in the screenshot below, it doesn't even look like it has the drivers to be able to detect a wireless network... I have ran update manager and made sure that I am up-to-date with everything and have restarted. Any ideas here?!?

  I'm not really an Office Communications Server expert, but just trying to resolve some seemingly minor issues with a new install... The following error is occurring in the OCS event log, and when I try to visit https://servername:444/LiveServer/MCUFactory in Internet Explorer to test the address, I just get a "page cannot be displayed" error. After going through a few curl tests, I've found no real connection between what is shown on the page and the x-junk: header. here's my curl request: any ideas?   I'm trying to build a database that I can use to track prices of groceries on certain dates. My problem is that I cannot figure out how to have a single entry associate with multiple data. For example, carrots. The index would be carrots.
