    I think Nautilus is so slow, and I'd like to move to PCmanFM, but didn't find any good tips how to do this in Ubuntu 12.10.   • Remote GDM login

    Is it possible to remotely (via ssh) make a login to GDM? I'll explain a situation in which I'd need this: I'm on my laptop and connect to my desktop via ssh. I realize there are some updates available. I install them all, but I need to reboot the computer. The problem is that once the desktop has rebooted, there will be no GDM session available, since it's necessary to log in. Can I somehow perform the GDM login remotely from my laptop?

  • Reduce boot time between grub menu and login screen

    I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS version which used to boot fast at beginning but not i loads very slow. I searched for this but can't find suitable answers. so i want to reduce my boot time which is now around 1min 12sec (boot chart) overall but i noticed its taking a longtime after grub menu and before login screen. A Blank screen appears after grub waiting... then login screen appears. I want to know a way to reduce that blank screen time(or if possible remove) and get login screen as fast as possible. I already removed several of my startup applications. Getting desktop after log-in is fast. I don't want to remove unity and install light desktop envinorments like Xfce and Lxde. Today's tip is on Storage and Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Question: I run Oracle Virtual Desktop 3.4.1 on Solaris and use a local ZFS storage pool.  How should I configure my ZFS ARC cache?  Answer by John Renko, Consulting Developer, Oracle: Oracle recommends about 5G of ARC cache per template in use to achieve up to a 90% disk read offload. Set your ARC min=max to reserve the maximum amount of your remaining memory for your running VMs. In /etc/system: set zfs:zfs_arc_min = 5368709120 set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 5368709120 The amount you need to reserve will depend on your template but this has proven to be a great start for a typical windows 7 VM running productivity applications.

  • 12.10 Unity doesn't appear when using Nvidia drivers

    I've just installed 12.10 from scratch. Unity also started okay, but in a poor resolution. I found a setting (I think it was in "software sources") to change the display driver to Nvidia, and then I rebooted. When Ubuntu now starts, it goes to the desktop (I see a file that I saved to the desktop) but there are no other screen elements -- no Unity, no menu bar at the top, no window decoration, nothing. Ctrl-Alt-T and Ctrl-Alt-F2 work as they should, but it's kinda limiting... How can I restore the default driver? I guess I need a way to open those "software sources" settings again - or anything else that could fix it! I hope I don't have to type all this by hand. How can I install a proper Nvidia driver so that I can get up to 1280x1024? My old tricks don't seem to work, but perhaps they might if I solve #1...

  • script shortcut to open two files in gedit as sudo

    I want to double click a file on my desktop, and have two files be opened in gedit as sudo. Whenever I'm making a new website, I need to open /etc/hosts /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default.conf as sudo. At the moment this means opening the terminal, runing sudo gedit then opening each file manually. I want to streamline this part of my workflow. On windows I had wrote a little bash script which worked nicely. How can I do the same in ubuntu? So far in my searches I've come across ways of adding a shortcut to the file browser, and similar things, but not exactly what I want. I have tried creating a desktop launcher, but can't see how to make it run as sudo.

  • Putting coworkers as references in CV [closed]

    My friend is working in one organisation for some time and wants to change a job. Problem is that motivation is money related (management is refusing to raise salary without any explanation despite 1) they don't have any questions nor problems related to his work 2) they promised raise long ago) and they won't find anyone to replace him. So they not just won't recommend him, but surely will say he is bad specialist and person as he leaves. Don't put that work in CV is not an option, so he thinks the possible solution is to reference his co-workers and teammates. He didn't work for them as employee, but he worked with them, so their (100% positive) feedback looks like fair compensation of what management will say. Is that correct? Looking for interviewers/employers opinion.

  • Reasons to Use a VM For Development

    Background: I work at a start-up company, where one team uses Virtual Machines to connect to a remote server to do their development, and another team (the team I'm on) uses local IIS/SQL Server 2005/Visual Studio installations to conduct work. Team VM is located about 1000 miles from Team Non-VM, and the servers the VMs run off of are located near Team VM (Latency, for those that are wondering, is about 50ms). A person high in the company is pushing for Team Non-VM to use virtual machines for programming, development, and testing. The latter point we agree on -- we want Virtual Machines to test configurations and various aspects of the web application in a 'clean' state. The Problem: What we don't agree on is having developers using RDP to connect to a desktop remotely that contains Visual Studio, SQL Server, and IIS to do the same development we could do locally on our laptops. I've tried the VM set-up, and besides the color issue, there is a latency issue that is rather noticeable, not to mention that since we're a start-up, a good number of employees work from home on occasion with our work laptops, and this move would cut off the laptops. They'd be turned in. Reasons to Use Remote VMs for Development (Not Testing!): Here are the stated reasons that this person wants us to use VMs: They work for TeamVM. They keep the source code "safe". If we want to work from home, we could just use our home PCs. Licenses (I don't know what the argument is, only that it's been used). Reasons not to use Remote VMs for Development: Here are the stated reasons why we don't want to use VMs: We like working from home. We get a lot done on our own time. We're not going to use our Home PCs to do work related stuff. The Latency is noticeable. Support for the VMs (if they go down, or if we need a new VM) takes a while. We don't have administrative privileges on the VM, and are unable to change settings as needed. What I'm looking for from the community is this: What reasons would you give for not using VMs for development? Keep in mind these are remote VMs -- this isn't a VM running on a local desktop. It's using the laptop (or a desktop) as a thin client for a remote VM. Also, on the other side of the coin: Is there something we're missing that makes VMs more palatable for development? Edit: I think 'safe' is used in term of corporate espionage, or more correctly if the Laptop gets stolen, the person who stole would have access to our source code. The former (as we've pointed out, is always going to be a possibility -- companies stop that with litigation, there isn't a technical solution (so far as I can see)). The latter point is ( though I don't know its usefulness in a corporate scenario) mitigated by Truecrypt'ing the entire volume.

    I got to do some image processing program in java using Linux. I chose to use the JMF for my camera (a webcam) access. But my program is not able to access the camera. But, the jmf works well in Windows. I downloaded jmf from oracle.com and I tried to install it in 'Ubuntu 10.10-the Maverick-released in October 2010 and supported until April 2012'. The downloaded file was a .bin file. I got the below output (last part of the output) when I tried the command provided by oracle /bin/sh ./jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin.   • Setting umask globally

    I am using a private user group setup, i.e. a user foo's home directory is owned by foo:foo, not foo:users. For this to work, I need to set the umask to 002 globally. After a quick grep -RIi umask /etc/*, it seemed for a moment that modifying the UMASK entry in /etc/login.defs should do the trick. It does, too -- but only for console logins. If I log in to my desktop, and open a terminal there, I still get to see the default umask 022. Same goes for files created from apps started through the menu. Apparently, the display manager (or whatever X11 component responsible) does source some different setting than a console login does, and damned if I could tell which one it is. (I tried changing the setting in /etc/init.d/rc, and no, it did not help.) How / where do I set umask globally, so that the X11 desktop environment gets the memo as well?

  • Apt Configuration problem

    I am trying to load v11.04 onto my HP desktop hard drive using a USB drive. I used the same USB drive to load the system on my Dell netbook and it loaded successfully. But trying to load on the desktop I get the error " Apt configuration problem. An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the CD failed" The installer then crashes. I have nothing in the CD drive. I can boot the system from the USB drive and it works fine. I have tried all options on the load with the same crash each time. I baffled as I successfully loaded my netbook with the same USB with no problems.

  • Can't see YouTube videos in either Firefox or Chromium

    Dont' know why or if it is related, after upgrading Ubuntu 10.04 kernel ( I guess from 2.6.32-38 to -42) I can's see youtube videos. I checked the flash plug-ins installed and I have: (1) flashplugin-installer, (2) flashplugin-nonfree and (3) flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound. I haven't reinstalled the browsers yet.
