• Oracle Virtualbox does not open since upgrade

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, I have been unable to restart my Oracle virtualbox. jan@jan-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup sudo: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: command not found Where do I go from here? Can anyone help, please? • Driver issue for 7850 HD Diamond Windows 7

  I have an issue with windows 7 implementing the drivers ati provides for my 7850 HD Diamond video card. The video card is plugged in correctly to the PCIE 2.0 slots of my motherboard (p6t asus) with more then enough power. Fortunately the card works as I have my monitor plugged into the card itself and I can see just fine. However windows 7 does not replace the standard vga default microsoft driver with catalyst drivers that I've tried installing from online as well as the CD. Every time I install the drivers using Catalyst Install manager it always finishes with "Install complete(Warnings occured)". I then see the warnings it has which it instead reports that it successfully installed the SDK, Catalyst Install Manager, and HDMI/AUDIO packages. When I check my device manager after that, the display adapter still shows as standard vga and that its still using microsoft default display adapter. Now this current card is replacing an old card of mine which is the ATI 4890 HD which works beautifully. In fact for the old card to work, all I need to do is go to device manager and right click on standard vga - click update driver and windows 7 magically finds the correct driver to install and everything is good. Not so with the new card. I've even went into my regedits and uninstalled every bit of ati driver software before reinstalling my new card. Nothing's worked thus far. I've already exchanged my card out once and talked to customer support from my motherboard, microsoft, and ati all blaming the other. Please help me out!!

• Google Analytics checkout page tracking problem

  I am running a multilingual website, each lang on a different domain name. I am trying to lead all purchase requests to the checkout progress, which has its own domain too. In order to keep Google Analytics tracking I've updated the Google Analytics code accordingly. I set the source domain to 'multiple top-level domains'. Everything is going fine so far unless in E-commerce Overview; the "Sources / Medium" is always showing as (direct) - or the name of the source domain. Since I am redirecting using PHP header(location:.. etc.) the Google _link method doesn't seem to be working properly - I want to focus on two questions: Should I create a new profile for the checkout domain in Google Analytics? (I am now using the profile ID of the source domain even though I move to the checkout domain, si that OK?) When I'm trying to pass the cookies of the source domain to the checkout domain, I notice that the Google cookies are copied to the new domain (the cookie path is .checkout-domain/) and they have the same values of the original cookies - But for some reason another set of cookies is created once I access a page with google analytics code in the checkout pages, with different values (same path). Feels like I'm doing something wrong here, so my question is - What am I doing wrong here? Does anyone have an idea how to pass the cookies to the checkout domain?

• Options for installing software on Amazon EC2 Windows instances

  I've been running Linux servers on Amazon EC2 for a while now; the experience has been great. I've recently needed to bring up a Windows server to run some Windows-only software that our product needs to use, and am running into a problem figuring out how to install the software, which is only available on DVD. With Linux I can just install packages from a Web-based repository and take advantage of EC2's fast network throughput, but so far on the Windows instance I've had to upload my ISO images to EC2 and mount them from the Windows EC2 instance. For some reason I'm getting really slow upload speeds to EC2, even though the regular upload speed from our office is pretty good (around 7Mbps). I've also tried mounting the DVD drive on my machine as a local drive on the EC2 instance via Remote Desktop, and then running the software install from the local drive, but I run into the same slow upload speed issue. Does anyone have a better way to install software from physical media onto an EC2 instance ?

• Ubuntu root privs installation issue

  I am a fairly new Ubuntu user (and Linux user, for that matter) and I just downloaded a program whose installer was a .sh file. Not thinking, I copied the installer to an /opt subdirectory, thinking that I was going to install the application there: sudo cp ~/Downloads/fooInstaller.sh /opt/someDir I can't remember, but I either had to use sudo because /opt required it, or I just used it without thinking, but in any case, I prefixed with sudo. Once in /opt/someDir, I executed the installer again, using sudo: sudo sh fooInstaller.sh The terminal went crazy, and a few seconds later, a graphical install wizard popped up that guided me through the rest of the process. At the end of the wizard I was prompted to launch the program, and I did, and everything was great. Until... I closed the program, and attempted to add it to my Ubuntu "panel" (the icon panel at the top of the screen). The program was installed to /usr/local/foo/theProgram, and so I specified that URL as the command in the custom app launcher. When I open the program through the panel/launcher (at the top of the screen), the program doesn't load or operate correctly. I get a lot of error messages complaining about being denied permissions. I'm assuming that this is a "superuser/installation/privs" issue, and not a problem with the application (hence this post at superuser.com instead of the application's forums), because when I launch the program from the terminal with sudo, it opens and executes perfectly fine, just like it did the first time around after the install wizard finished. I realize I'm probably going to have to uninstall the program completely, and re-install it differently. Finally, my question: After uninstalling, can I avoid all these issue by just running the installer (sh fooInstaller.sh) right out of my Downloads directory, sans the sudo prefix? If not, how do I get the program to install without root privs so that I can add it to my panel/launcher and get it executing correctly? Sorry for the long post but I didn't want to omit any details because, as I'm sure you can tell, I'm not really sure I know what I'm doing. Thanks for any help here!

• A tiered approach to cloning linux partitons

  I'm looking at a strategy for cloning Linux (root) partitions without having to use a Live CD. Literature suggests rightly that the source and target partitions must be umounted to be able to get a clean clone. This assumes that you need to use a LiveCD. I was wondering if instead of requiring a LiveCD, if using a 3rd partition that would emulate the LiveCD functionality, if we can't achieve the same functionality. In other words, at a high level a system with 3 partitions (all bootable): Rescue Partition (LiveCD emulation) Running Partition (Source) Backup Partition (Destination) All 3 partitions are LVMS. When it's time to clone the source partition to the backup (destination) partition, we would boot to the rescue partition, unmount the other 2 partitions (is it required?), run disk check on the source, copy to the destination (dd or simple copy to avoid replicating the defragmentation from the source), run disk check on the destination partition, update Grub menu list to force boot from either partition, and reboot into that partition. My question, is it an approach that you'd recommend? MBR in all this? Any gotchas or extra checks required? Thanks, D. PS. On recommendation from members, posting here instead of stackoverflow.com.

• Fix Package is in a very bad inconsistent state

  I can't update my system because it freezes while installing a third-party update (zramswap-enabler)!! Sometimes I get the following message in Update manager: Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: E:The package zramswap-enabler needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. I tried to remove the zramswap-enabler, but it's impossible because I get the following message: dpkg: error processing zramswap-enabler (--remove): Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal. Errors were encountered while processing: zramswap-enabler E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) Actually i would really reinstall that package, but it is unable to do it! If i remove this third-party PPA then the system is warning me about a very very serious problem. So why can i not install/reinstall/remove/update this package and why freezes the updater if i try to update? -S O L U T I O N-: Okay! Finally i found the solution for this Problem! Step 1. Make sure that your PPA is correctly Step 2. I found a package for it, and issued: sudo tasksel install lamp-server sudo apt-get install redmine Which (I think almost) worked, but I've no idea how to test it, or even know if it's configured. How do I test it? I'm using 10.04 server so I don't have a local GUI.

• Compiling Gearman PHP Library for CentOS 5.8

  I've been trying to get Gearman compiled on CentOS 5.8 all afternoon. Unfortunately I am restricted to this version of CentOS by my CTO and how he has our entire network configured. I think it's simply because we don't have enough resources to upgrade our network... But anyways, the problem at hand. I have searched through Server Fault, Stack Overflow, Google, and am unable to locate a working solution. What I have below is stuff I have pieced together from my searching. Searches have told said to install the following via yum: yum -y install --enablerepo=remi boost141-devel libgearman-devel e2fsprogs-devel e2fsprogs gcc44 gcc-c++ To get the Boost headers working correctly I did this: cp -f /usr/lib/boost141/* /usr/lib/ cp -f /usr/lib64/boost141/* /usr/lib64/ rm -f /usr/include/boost ln -s /usr/include/boost141/boost /usr/include/boost With all of the dependancies installed and paths setup I then download and compile gearmand-1.1.2 just fine. wget -O /tmp/gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz https://launchpad.net/gearmand/1.2/1.1.2/+download/gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz cd /tmp && tar zxvf gearmand-1.1.2.tar.gz ./configure && make -j8 && make install That works correctly. So now I need to install the Gearman library for PHP. I have attempted through PECL and downloading the source directly, both result in the same error: checking whether to enable gearman support... yes, shared not found configure: error: Please install libgearman What I don't understand is I installed the libgearman-devel package which also installed the core libgearman. The installation installs libgearman-devel-0.14-3.el5.x86_64, libgearman-devel-0.14-3.el5.i386, libgearman-0.14-3.el5.x86_64, and libgearman-0.14-3.el5.i386. Is it possible the package version is lower than what is required? I'm still poking around with this, but figured I'd throw this up to see if anyone has a solution while I continue to research a fix.   I want to setup some brand new servers with RHEL 6.4. Servers do not have DVD, so, I have to use USB for the installation. I already have a custom ISO with a kickstart file that I use on servers with DVD flawlessly. I used iso2usb to move the ISO t? my USB. When I boot from the USB, the ks file is found, anaconda starts, but then stops with the following error: "The installation source given by device ['sda1'] could not be found. Please check your parameters and try again" Notes: The USB IS the sda. My custom ISO file is renamed to linux.iso from iso2usb and it is present in the root directory of the USB. Kickstart file has the following entry: harddrive --partition=sda1 --dir=/ Please help me to automate the installation with kickstart. • Fresh Proxmox VE 2.1 installation with defaults can't be reached or pinged

  I am using the lastest Proxmox VE 2.1. My server has two NICS with a uplink only connected into eth0. My Server is a co-located server utilizing public IPv4 IPs. It is not behind a firewall or any system which monitors traffic. Via IPKVM I did a fresh install of Proxmox, I put in the correct IP, Mask, Gateway, and DNS information. The install went perfectly fine with no errors. Upon completion and rebooting the system: I am unable to reach the web GUI via the browser, it just times out. I am unable to ping the server. I am unable to ping outside to the Internet from within the server. Tried pinging out to 4.2.2.2 and yahoo.com I tried rebooting the server and restarting the network service. IFCONFIG shows my IP information under vmbro0 which also has the same MAC address as the eth0 device. eth0 only displays a IPv6 Scope:Link address, which I did not setup myself. This is my first time installing proxmox, but after searching for a few hours it doesn't seem like anyone else is having the same issue as me from a fresh install with just the defaults. So far the only thing I did was install it. Also, I know the network cable is good and the IP is good because I was running a Xen XCP server with the same network settings prior to wiping it to install proxmox.   I am trying to install MS SQL Database 2005 on Windows XP Home SP3. It fails giving no reason ("Database failed to install"), then exits. I had already installed MS SQL Database Express Edition 2008 during 2005 setup. But when I removed 2008 one and tried to install 2005 afterwards it still failed with same error. The error happens when I am trying to install Dragon Age Toolset or Visual 2008 Pro edition. I do not known which else informations may be valuable as I never before encountered problems with installing MS database

• Having trouble installing guest additions for a Xubuntu 13.10 guest OS in Virtualbox 4.2.10

  I am using Ubuntu 13.04 64-BIT as my host operating system running Virtual Box 4.2.10. I get this message when I tell virtualbox to install guest additions(CTRL+D),mounting the volume in the guest OS and run the VBoxLinuxAdditions.run file using root by: sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run It starts and then comes to these error messages: Verifying archive integrity... All good. Uncompressing VirtualBox 4.2.10 Guest Additions for Linux.......... VirtualBox Guest Additions installer Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason. Building the main Guest Additions module ...done. Building the shared folder support module ...fail! (Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong) Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done.   At first glance, hopping windows seem fairly innocuous and obvious. They organize events into windows with a simple periodic definition: the windows have some duration d (e.g. a window covers 5 second time intervals), an interval or period p (e.g. a new window starts every 2 seconds) and an alignment a (e.g. one of those windows starts at 12:00 PM on March 15, 2012 UTC). var wins = xs     .HoppingWindow(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5),                    TimeSpan.FromSeconds(2),                    new DateTime(2012, 3, 15, 12, 0, 0, DateTimeKind.Utc)); Logically, there is a window with start time a + np and end time a + np + d for every integer n. That’s a lot of windows. So why doesn’t the following query (always) blow up? var query = wins.Select(win => win.Count()); A few users have asked why StreamInsight doesn’t produce output for empty windows. Primarily it’s because there is an infinite number of empty windows! (Actually, StreamInsight uses DateTimeOffset.MaxValue to approximate “the end of time” and DateTimeOffset.MinValue to approximate “the beginning of time”, so the number of windows is lower in practice.) That was the good news. Now the bad news. Events also have duration. Or we can switch to a custom implementation of hopping windows that doesn’t suffer from this shortcoming. The alternate window implementation produces output only when the input changes. We start by breaking up the timeline into non-overlapping intervals assigned to each window. In figure 1, six hopping windows (“Windows”) are assigned to six intervals (“Assignments”) in the timeline. Next we take input events (“Events”) and alter their lifetimes (“Altered Events”) so that they cover the intervals of the windows they intersect. In figure 1, you can see that the first event e1 intersects windows w1 and w2 so it is adjusted to cover assignments a1 and a2. Finally, we can use snapshot windows (“Snapshots”) to produce output for the hopping windows. Notice however that instead of having six windows generating output, we have only four. The first and second snapshots correspond to the first and second hopping windows. The remaining snapshots however cover two hopping windows each! While in this example we saved only two events, the savings can be more significant when the ratio of event duration to window duration is higher. Figure 1: Timeline The implementation of this strategy is straightforward. We need to set the start times of events to the start time of the interval assigned to the earliest window including the start time. Similarly, we need to modify the end times of events to the end time of the interval assigned to the latest window including the end time. • missing libjpeg.so.62 from ia32 shared library

  I am trying to install a chemical/molecular biology modeling program called Molsoft ICM-Pro. Initially after downloading the program and trying to open, it gave me error messages that I was missing shared libraries, and after talking with my network administrator he recommended I install the ia32 shared libraries using sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Which gives sudo apt-get install ia32-libs Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done ia32-libs is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. so I am assuming the libraries installed correctly, but now when I try to run the program I get this error: ubuntu:/home/reilly/icmd icm icm: error while loading shared libraries: libjpeg.so.62: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory So my question is, where can I get the library containing libjpeg.so.62? Additionally, I was told I would need libXmu.so.6 and libtiff.so.3 . Is there a shared library that could be missing that would contain these files? I am an ubuntu noob, so sorry if the information I provided was unclear. Any help would be immensely appreciated! btw I am using ubuntu 12.04 dual boot with windows on an HP pavilion dv6
