  Red Hat's Ceylon language has some interesting improvements over Java: The overall vision: learn from Java's mistakes, keep the good, ditch the bad The focus on readability and ease of learning/use Static Typing (find errors at compile time, not run time) No “special” types, everything is an object Named and Optional parameters (C# 4.0) Nullable types (C# 2.0) No need for explicit getter/setters until you are ready for them (C# 3.0) Type inference via the "local" keyword (C# 3.0 "var") Sequences (arrays) and their accompanying syntactic sugariness (C# 3.0) Straight-forward implementation of higher-order functions I don't know Scala but have heard it offers some similar advantages over Java. How would Scala compare to Ceylon in this respect?

• Windows Server 2008 R2 RAS VPN: access server on internal interface ip

  short question: I'm usually a linux admin but need to setup a Win2k8 R2 server for a student project. The server is running as VM on a root server and has a public internet IP assigned. Additionally I need a VPN server to access some services running on the server. I managed to set up a working VPN gateway via the Routing and RAS service which assigns clients an IP in the private subnet 192.168.88.0/24 with the Interface "Internal" listening on 192.168.88.1. Additionally I set up the external interface as NAT interface. So I can connect to the VPN server, get an IP assigned and the server additionally does NAT and I can access the internet over the VPN connection. The only thing I additionally need, is that I can access the server itself over that internal IP (e.g. client 192.168.88.2, server 192.168.88.1) as I want to access some services which I don't like to expose to the internet and restrict them to connected VPN clients. Does anybody have a hint, which configuration I'm missing here to be able to access the server over the VPN connection? EDIT: VPN clients get assigned the IP from the private subnet with subnetmask 255.255.255.255, I guess that might be the reason I can't access the server on the private IP address although it's in the same network range. Any ideas how to change this? I defined a static address pool in the Routing and RAS service, but I can't change the netmask there. EDIT2: I can't access the server from the client, but I can fully access the client from the server (ping, HTTP). I guess it has to do with firewall configuration. Thanks in advance, Mathias

• How to uninstall a firefox plugin?

  I was trying to play minecraft in the browser, and I got asked to install a plugin called "IcedTea-Web Plugin (using IcedTea-Web 1.2 (1.2-2ubuntu1))" (something related to Java 6), which I can see now in Tools Addons Plugins. There was another plugin to install (for Java 7), I didn't know if I had to select one, so I just clicked Install or Accept. Now the game or java app only shows a black screen, so I thought I should uninstall the plugin and try installing the other one. But there doesn't seem to be a way to uninstall plugins through the firefox GUI. Any ideas?

  I am building a game in jMonkey (Java) and I have so far only used default quest text. But now I need to start populating a lot of quests with text. My design requires A LOT of quests texts. What is the best way to build a database of quest texts in jMonkey? I don't have a lot of real experience with databases. Is there a database that integrates well with jMonkey? Here are the ideal properties I want in my database, in order of priority: Reasonably light learning curve Easy portability (in Java) to Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX Good interface with Java Good interface with jMonkey The ability to add properties to the quests: ID, level, gender, quest chain ID, etc. Or am I wrong in thinking I need to use some giant monster like SQL? I haven't been able to find much information on this, so are people using some non-database methods for storing things like quest text in jMonkey?

• Sonicwall TZ210 - Set up public wifi on separate subnet & interface

  I want to set up a public wifi by connecting another router to the X6 interface, and put it on a separate subnet (192.168.10.0/24) & in the DMZ Zone to keep it away from the regular LAN. I believe I have the network settings correct: the router has acquired the IP and DNS information from the TZ210, and the TZ210 shows it as an active DHCP lease. X6 is in the DMZ. I now have a routing/NAT/firewall problem, since I can't get any traffic to travel from the subnet to the internet. I can't get to any external websites and can't ping the TZ210 from the subnet. X0 is the regular LAN, and X1 is the WAN. Looking for any tips or tutorials on this.   i just got placed after completing my b.tech as an assistant programmer i am curious to know about some things.... i am not at all a very good programmer(in java) as i just started but whenever i see some complicated coding i feel like how man... how they think so much i mean flow and all... what should i do? should i just go with the flow or what?? java is very vast so nobody can memorize everything then how they find so many specific functions to use... should i try to memorize all the syntax stuff or just use google to things and with time it ll be all handy.... what should be my strategy to enhance my skills PS: i love java (crazy about it...) and one more thing, in my company i m not under much pressure so it is good or bad for me???? please guide me. i know you all can help me with your experience :) thank you.

• Running 32-bit Firefox with sun-jre in 64-bit Ubuntu

  I am trying to run juniper networks connect program to vpn into work and it only works on 32bit sun jre. All the things I have found with google failed so far. I can't use any scripts, like madscientists, as part of the authentication I need to provide some random characters from a grid. So to isolate this 32bit app install to a corner, I downloaded firefox and jre and unpack them to /opt. I run firefox with sudo as Juniper asks for root password. Here is Firefox plugins folder /ot/firefox32/plugins# ls -la total 8 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 11 00:57 . drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 Mar 10 23:48 .. lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 49 Mar 11 00:57 libnpjp2.so -> /opt/java/32/jdk1.6.0_31/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so Firefox lists sun jre but when check it with "http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp" it either can't detect java or Firefox freezes Any Ideas? • running jar in a terminal using axis2

  I'm trying to run in the command line a java application distributed in a jar file. It call an axis2 web service, so the jar contains a /axis2client directory with rampart.mar security module. It works fine while I run it in netbeans, but it throws an exception if I try to run it in a terminal using this command: java -jar myfile.jar The Exception: org.apache.axis2.AxisFault: invalid url: //file:/home/xxx/Desktop/myfile.jar!/axis2client/ (java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol: //file:/home/xxx/Desktop/myfile.jar) As you can see, it's trying to use the /axis2client directory inside the jar, as when I run it in Netbeans, but It fails with a MalformedURLException. I think it's something about the protocol 'file:', probably '//file:/' must be 'file:///'. The problem is that I cannot change this call to the directory because the method that loads the /axis2client directory it's not mine, it's from another library that use my project and include all the axis2 support. • iptables forwarding to a dummy interface

  Hi, I'm trying to accomplish the following: I have a box with a service listening on a dummy interface (say 172.16.0.1), udp port 5555. Now what I'd like to do is to take packets that arrive on interfaces eth0 (1.1.1.1:5555) and eth1 (2.2.2.2:5555) and forward them to the service on the dummy interface, and have replies go back to clients out the same physical interface they came in. Clients must think they're talking to 1.1.1.1:5555 or 2.2.2.2:5555. I think I need a mix of iptables rules and packet marking, plus some iproute rules (if it's possible at all). What I tried is to catch packets coming in from eth0 and eth1, udp port 5555, and mark them with 1 and 2 respectively, and --save-mark in the connmark. Then I used a DNAT to 172.16.0.1. The service seems to be getting the packets. Now I'm not sure how to do the reverse. It seems that for packets originating from the box, you can't do anything before the routing decision, but that would be the place to restore the marks, and thus make a routing decision based on those. Here's what I have so far: iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -d 1.1.1.1 -p udp --port 5555 -j MARK --set-mark 1 iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -d 2.2.2.2 -p udp --port 5555 -j MARK --set-mark 2 iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -d 1.1.1.1 -p udp --port 5555 -j CONNMARK --save-mark iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -d 2.2.2.2 -p udp --port 5555 -j CONNMARK --save-mark iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -m mark --mark 1 -j DNAT --to-destination 172.16.0.1 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -m mark --mark 2 -j DNAT --to-destination 172.16.0.1 # What next? As I said, I'm not even sure it can be done. To give a bit of background, it's an old OpenVPN installation that cannot be upgraded (otherwise I'd install a recent version that supports multihoming natively). Thanks for any help.

  I'm working in java with LWJGL and trying to double all my pixels. I'm trying to draw in an area of 800x450 and then stretch all the frame image to the complete 1600x900 pixels without them getting blured. I can't figure out how to do that in java, everything I find is in c++... A hint would be great! Thanks a lot. EDIT : I've tried drawing to a texture created in opengl by setting it to the framebuffer, but I can't find a way to use glGenTextures() in java... so this is not working... also I though about using a shader but I would not be able to draw only in the smaller region...

• How to properly set up Sun's JDK?

  I'm trying to manually install the Sun JDK package (I have my reasons, don't bother asking why). I've successfully extracted the .bin file into /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.6.0_23, but the problem is the PATH variable. I added this line to the /etc/environment file: JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.6.0_23" and added JAVA_HOME/bin to the PATH variable, BUT the OS still doesn't recognise the command java, says it's not installed and offers me gcj and openjdk. There was another way by using java-package and converting the .bin to .deb installer, but unfortunately that package is not available on/for maverick, so I can't do it that way. How can I make the PATH variable work and is there anything else required apart from the environment variables to make it all work? When I try to use the update-java-alternatives -l command, it says the following: awk: cannot open /usr/lib/jvm/*.jinfo (No such file or directory) jdk1.6.0_23 /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.6.0_23 What should be the name of the file and the contents of it?

• Which Programming Languages Support the Following Features?

  My personal programming background is mainly in Java, with a little bit of Ruby, a tiny bit of Scheme, and most recently, due to some iOS development, Objective-C. In my move from Java to Objective-C I've really come to love some features that Objective-C has that Java doesn't. These include support for both static and dynamic typing, functional programming, and closures, which I'm trying to leverage in my code more often. Unfortunately there are trade-offs, including lack of support for generics and (on iOS at least) no garbage collection. These contrasts have lead me to start a search for some of the programming languages that support the following features: Object Oriented Functional Programming Support Closures Generics Support for both Static and Dynamic Typing Module Management to avoid classpath/dll hell Garbage Collection Available Decent IDE Support Admittedly some of these features(IDE support, Module Management) may not be specific to the language itself, but obviously influence the ease of development in the language. • Is there a good reference manual for ruby/rails?

  I've found switching from Java to Ruby/Rails to be very difficult. I feel like the rails books and websites that I've seen are program by example, and I have yet to see anything like a complete reference. In the java/spring world there is plenty of examples but also very thorough reference manuals. So even though I can get toy application xyz up and running in an afternoon with rails I'm apprehensive about doing anything of significance. I'm willing to admit that maybe this is because I've done java/spring for a few years and have near zero experience with ruby/rails. Just wondering if anyone else has run into this or if I'm missing something.

• Map, Set use cases in a general web app

  I am currently working on my own Java web app (to be shown in interview to get a Java job). So I've not worked on Java in professional environment, so no guidance. I have database, entity classes, JPA relationships. Use cases are like, user has albums, album has pics, user has locations, location has co-ordinates etc. I used List (ArrayList) everywhere. I can do anything with List and DB, get some entry, find etc. For example, I will keep the list of users in List, then use queries to get some entry (why would I keep them in Map with id/email as key?). I know very well the working and features, implementing classes of Map, Set. I can use them for solving some algorithm, processing some data etc. In interviews, I get asked have you worked with these, where have you used them etc. So, Please tell me cases where they should be used (DB or any popular real use case).

• Vyatta masquerade out bridge interface

  We have set up a Vyatta Core 6.1 gateway on our network with three interfaces: eth0 - 1.1.1.1 - public gateway/router IP (to public upstream router) eth1 - 2.2.2.1/24 - public subnet (connected to a second firewall 2.2.2.2) eth2 - 10.10.0.1/24 - private subnet Our ISP provided the 1.1.1.1 address for us to use as our gateway. The 2.2.2.1 address is so the other firewall (2.2.2.2) can communicate to this gateway which then routes the traffic out through the eth0 interface. Here is our current configuration: interfaces { bridge br100 { address 2.2.2.1/24 } ethernet eth0 { address 1.1.1.1/30 vif 100 { bridge-group { bridge br100 } } } ethernet eth1 { bridge-group { bridge br100 } } ethernet eth2 { address 10.10.0.1/24 } loopback lo { } } service { nat { rule 100 { outbound-interface eth0 source { address 10.10.0.1/24 } type masquerade } } } With this configuration, it routes everything, but the source address after masquerading is 1.1.1.1, which is correct, because that's the interface it's bound to. But because of some of our requirements here, we need it to source from the 2.2.2.1 address instead (what's the point of paying for a class C public subnet if the only address we can send from is our gateway!?). I've tried binding to br100 instead of eth0, but it doesn't seem to route anything if I do that. I imagine I'm just missing something simple. Any thoughts?
