• Converting Makefile to Visual Studio Terminology Questions (First time using VS)

  I am an old Unix guy who is converting a makefile based project over to Microsoft Visual Studio, I got tasked with this because I understand the Makefile which chokes VS's automatic import tools. I am sure there is a better way than what I am doing but we are making things fit into the customer's environment and that is driving my choices. So gmake is not a valid answer, even if it is the right one ;-) I just have a couple of questions on terminology that I think will be easy for an experienced (or junior) user to answer. Presently, a make all will generate several executables and a shared library. How should I structure this? Is it one "solution" with multiple projects? There is a body of common code (say 50%) that is shared between the various executable targets that is not in a formal library, if that matters. I thought I could just set up the first executable and then add targets for the others, but that does not seem to work. I know I am working against the tool, so what is the right way? I am also using Visual C++ 2010 Express to try and do this so that may also be a problem if support for multiple targets is not supported without using Visual C++ 2010 (insert superlative). Thanks, this is really one of those questions that should be answerable by a quick chat with the resident Windows Developer at the water cooler. • Django aggregate query generating SQL error

  I'm using Django 1.1.1 on a SQL Server 2005 db using the latest sqlserver_ado library. models.py includes: class Project(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=50) class Thing(models.Model): project = models.ForeignKey(Project) reference = models.CharField(max_length=50) class ThingMonth(models.Model): thing = models.ForeignKey(Thing) timestamp = models.DateTimeField() ThingMonthValue = models.FloatField() class Meta: db_table = u'ThingMonthSummary' In a view, I have retrieved a queryset called 'things' which contains 25 Things: things = Thing.objects.select_related().filter(project=1).order_by('reference') I then want to do an aggregate query to get the average ThingMonthValue for the first 20 of those Things for a certain period, and the same value for the last 5. For the first 20 I do: averageThingMonthValue = ThingMonth.objects.filter(turbine__in=things[:20],timestamp__range="2009-01-01 00:00","2010-03-00:00")).aggregate(Avg('ThingMonthValue'))['ThingMonthValue__avg'] This works fine, and returns the desired value. For the last 5 I do: averageThingMonthValue = ThingMonth.objects.filter(turbine__in=things[20:],timestamp__range="2009-01-01 00:00","2010-03-00:00")).aggregate(Avg('ThingMonthValue'))['ThingMonthValue__avg'] But for this I get an SQL error: 'Only one expression can be specified in the select list when the subquery is not introduced with EXISTS.' • git doesn't show where code was removed.

  So I was tasked at replacing some dummy code that our project requires for historical compatibility reasons but has mysteriously dropped out sometime since the last release. Since disappearing code makes me nervous about what else might have gone missing but un-noticed I've been digging through the logs trying to find in what commit this handful of lines was removed. I've tried a number of things including "git log -S'add-visit-resource-pcf'", git blame, and even git bisect with a script that simply checks for the existence of the line but have been unable to pinpoint exactly where these lines were removed. • Splitting EJBs and interfaces into separate module -- deployment fails

  I'm having trouble following this guide to "extract" my interfaces and entities from my EAR to use them from another Web Application: I use NetBeans 6.8 and Glassfish 3.0.1 "Java Class Library" project contains all the entities and interfaces "Java EE Application" project class library added to the project, is packaged into the EAR contains EJB implementations, MDBs, Test "Java Web Application" project class library added to the project, is packaged into the WAR contains REST interface When I build and deploy the Web Application, all goes well. When I build the JEE application, I can see the jar-file (interfaces, entities) being included.   I have IIS6 compression setup, and static content is being compressed correctly as per Coding Horror.   I am using CruiseControl.net for continous integration. I've created a repository for my project using VisualSvn server (uses Windows Authentication). Both the servers are hosted in the same system (Os-Microsoft Windows Server 2003 sp2). • Which tools to use and how to find file descriptors leaking from Glassfish?

  We release new code to production every week and Glassfish hasn't had any problems. This weekend we had to move racks at our hosting provider. There were not any code changes (they just powered off, moved, re-racked and powered on) but we're on a new network infrastructure and suddenly we're leaking file descriptors like a sieve. So I'm guessing there is some sort of connection attempting to be made which now fails due to a network change. I'm running Glassfish v2ur2-b04/AS9.1_02 on RHEL4 with an embedded IMQ instance. I have no idea what these sockets are. I've undeployed my application so there is only a plain Glassfish instance running and I still see it leaking 12 file descriptors a minute. So I think this leak is in Glassfish or potentially IMQ. What approach should I take to tracking down these sockets of unknown protocol? What tools can I use (or flags can I pass to lsof) to get more information about where to look? thanks, chuck

But with nameWin, e4x compares local variable nameWin (which not interested for me at all at this time) with "necessary name" instead of compare item's nameWin with "necessary name". Any ideas? • Representing complex scheduled reoccurance in a database

  I have the interesting problem of representing complex schedule data in a database. As a guideline, I need to be able to represent the entirety of what the iCalendar -- ics -- format can represent, but in a database. I'm not actually implementing anything relating to ics, but it gives a good scope of the type of rules I need to be able to model. I need to allow allow representation of a single event or a reoccurring event based on multiple times per day, days of the week, week of a month, month, year, or some combination of those. For example, the third Thursday in November annually, or the 25th of December annually, or every two weeks starting November 2 and continuing until September 8 the following year. I don't care about insertion efficiency but query efficiency is critical. The operation I will be doing most often is providing either a single date/time or a date/time range, and trying to determine if the defined schedule matches any part of the date/time range. Other operations can be slower. For example, given January 15, 2010 at 10:00 AM through January 15, 2010 at 11:00 AM, find all schedules that match at least part of that time. (i.e. a schedule that covers 10:30 - 11:00 still matches.) Any suggestions? I looked at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1016170/how-would-one-represent-scheduled-events-in-an-rdbms but it doesn't cover the scope of the type of reoccurance rules I'd like to model.

• Is this a bug in plist or Xcode?

  G'day All If you create a date item in the plist editor of Xcode or Apple's standalone plist editor you get something of the form <date>2010-05-29T10:30:00Z</date> which is a nice well formed ISO date at UTC (indicated by the "Z"). Because I'm in timezone UTC +10 when that's read into my app & then displayed I get 8:30 PM out, still good. However if that is a time in my timezone it should be <date>2010-05-29T10:30:00+10</date> (replacing "Z" with my timezone offset). All of my attempts at reading such dates into my iPhone app have had the plist rejected as if it is malformed & editing a plist with such a date in Apple's editors changed the "+10" to "Z" without adjusting the time. Do others think I'm correct in thinking this is a bug in either plist or Xcode? My feeling is that the implementation of ISO date & time in plist is incomplete. Cheers, Pedro :)

• How can I make an event created through Google Calendar's API send an invitation email?

  I'm trying to create an event through the API and it is mostly working, with the exception that while the new events are being created in the invitees calendars, no emails are being sent. Creating the event from the web interface is pushing the event through, as well as sending the email (except one account that doesn't get any notifications at all, but that's not relevant to my current problem).   Please see attached image I have a table which have FromDate and ToDate. FromDate is start of some event and ToDate is end of taht event. I need to find a record if search criteria is in between range of dates. e.g. If a record has FromDate 2010/15/5 and ToDate 2010/15/25 and my criteria is FromDate 2010/5/18 and ToDate is 2010/5/21 then this record should be in search results becasue this is in the range of 15 to 25.   Hi There, When I try to run my site it gives error as Internal Server error, when I refresh the page I get my result properly.The error page looks like this: Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
