• Some New .NET Downloads and Resources

  Last week I was fortunate enough to spend time in Redmond on Microsoft’s campus for the 2011 Microsoft MVP Summit.  It was great to hang out with a number of old friends and get the opportunity to talk tech with the various product teams up at Microsoft.  The weather wasn’t exactly sunny but Microsoft always does a great job with the Summit and everyone had a blast (heck, I even got to run the bases at SafeCo field) While much of what we saw is covered under NDA, there a ton of great things in the pipeline from Microsoft and many things that are already available (or just became so) that I wasn’t necessarily aware of.  The purpose of this post is to share some of the info I learned on resources and tools available to .NET developers today.  Please let me know if you have any questions (or if you know of something else cool which might benefit others). Enjoy! Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Microsoft has issued the RTM release of Visual Studio 2010 SP1.  You can download the full SP1 on MSDN as of today (March 10th to the general public) and take advantage of such things as: Silverlight 4 is included in the box (as opposed to a separate install) Silverlight 4 Profiling WCF RIA Services SP1 Intellitrace for 64-bit and SharePoint ASP.NET now easily supports IIS Express and SQL CE Want a description of all that’s new beyond the above biased list (which arguably only contains items I think are important)?  Check out this KB article. Portable Library Tools CTP Without much fanfare Microsoft has released a CTP of a new add-in to Visual Studio 2010 which simplifies code sharing between projects targeting different runtimes (i.e. Silverlight, WPF, Win7 Phone, XBox).   With this Add-In installed you can add a new project of type “Portable Library” and specify which platforms you wish to target.  Once that is done, any code added to this library will be limited to use only features which are common to all selected frameworks.  Other projects can now reference this portable library and be provided assemblies custom built to their environment.  This greatly simplifies the current process of sharing linked files between platforms like WPF and Silverlight.  You can find out more about this CTP and how it works on this great blog post. Visual Studio Async CTP Microsoft has also released a CTP of a set of language and framework enhancements to provide a much more powerful asynchronous programming model.   Due to the focus on async programming in all types of platforms (and it being the ONLY option in Silverlight and Win7 phone) a move towards a simpler and more understandable model is always a good thing. This CTP (called Visual Studio Async CTP) can be downloaded here.  You can read more about this CTP on this blog post. MSDN Code Samples Gallery Microsoft has also launched new code samples gallery on their MSDN site: http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/.   This site allows you to easily search for small samples of code related to a particular technology or platform.  If a sample of code you are looking for is not found, you can request one via the site and other developers can see your request and provide a sample to the site to suit your needs.  You can also peruse requested samples and, if you find a scenario where you can provide value, upload your own sample for the benefit of others.  Samples are packaged into the VS .vsix format and include any necessary references/dependencies.  By using .vsix as the deployment mechanism, as samples are installed from the site they are kept in your Visual Studio 2010 Samples Gallery and kept for your future reference. If you get a chance, check out the site and see how it is done.  Although a somewhat simple concept, I was very impressed with their implementation and the way they went about trying to suit a need.  I’ll definitely be looking there in the future as need something or want to share something. MSDN Search Capabilities Another item I learned recently and was not aware of (that might seem trivial to some) is the power of the MSDN site’s search capabilities.  Between the Code Samples Gallery described above and the search enhancements on MSDN, Microsoft is definitely investing in their platform to help provide developers of all skill levels the tools and resources they need to be successful. What do I mean by the MSDN search capability and why should you care? If you go to the MSDN home page (http://msdn.microsoft.com) and use the “Search MSDN with Big” box at the very top of the page you will see some very interesting results.  First, the search actually doesn’t just search the MSDN library it searches: MSDN Library All Microsoft Blogs CodePlex StackOverflow Downloads MSDN Magazine Support Knowledgebase (I’m not sure it even ends there but the above are all I know of) Beyond just searching all the above locations, the results are formatted very nicely to give some contextual information based on where the result came from.  For example, if a keyword search returned results from CodePlex, each row in the search results screen would include a large amount of information specific to CodePlex such as: Looking at the above results immediately tells you everything from the page views to the CodePlex ratings.  All in all, knowing that this much information is indexed and available from a single search location will lead me to utilize this as one of my initial searches for development information.

• Waiting for Windows 8: A Long, Hot Summer

  Microsoft has revealed some things about Windows 8, and revealed a part of the developer story for new Windows 8 “tailored,” “immersive” applications.  In retrospect, very little was shared.  The bit that was revealed to us is that those applications can be developed using a combination of HTML 5 and JavaScript.  Not much else was said, except that additional details would be revealed at Microsoft’s //Build/ conference in Anaheim, California in September. This has left a lot of people in suspense, and it seems that suspended state is going to last all summer.  The problem, of course, is that in the absence of hard information, people fill the void with Speculation, Rumor and Gloom.  That’s a bit like Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, except that it’s self-imposed by the Microsoft community and not planted by Microsoft’s competitors. This is a less-than-perfect situation.  Not only is it causing developers to worry about the value of their skill sets, but I am already hearing from consulting shops that customers are getting nervous too and, in extreme cases, opting for non-Microsoft tools for their projects as a result.  I’m also hearing from dev tool ISVs that sales have suffered as a result. It’s quite possible that the customers moving off .NET wanted to do so anyway and it’s also possible that dev tool ISVs are suffering slower sales this year due a slowed rate of economic recovery. Without hard information, tend to people interpret things negatively.  Actually, that’s the major point in all of this. While there is multitude of opinions about what the Windows 8 development platform will look like once fully revealed, there is an emerging consensus around one thing: it sure would help if Microsoft revealed more of its strategy…just enough to quash absurd rumors, stabilize the .NET ecosystem and get people to stay calm. We’ve had some reassurances thus far: there will be a Windows desktop mode; we’ll still have Windows Explorer, we’ll still run Office, we’ll still have a task bar, and all the skills and tools we use now will still work there.  But with reassurances like that…people still feel insecure.  Because telling us that Windows 8 will have what is essentially a “classic” mode sure makes it sound like today’s skill sets will soon be “classic” too…and then maybe they’ll just become obsolete. Humans find change scary; it’s natural.  And when left alone with their fears – because no one is saying anything to dispel them – people can go from frightened to paranoid, and can start to viewing things in a downright conspiratorial light.  It would be great if Microsoft stepped into the void now and told us what is coming – especially because whatever they tell us is bound to be at least a little better than what people think they are going to hear. I don’t know what the announcements will be, but I do have it on authority, from a number of sources, that Microsoft isn’t gong to talk until //Build/.  That means no news until September September 13th.  Nothing until after Labor Day.  You get zippo until after the Back-to-School sales are done. What to do?  Try not to let the dark voices of gloom and doom fill your head.  Even in the absence of answers, we still have some important facts: The .NET developer community is huge. Microsoft’s customers have major investments in .NET, and in .NET skills. Political infighting in Redmond might make for irrational decisions, but ultimately public companies can’t just alienate their advocates and piss off their customers.  Spite doesn’t trump fiduciary responsibility. The computing device markets are changing, software is changing, software business models are changing and developers are changing.  Microsoft has to keep up. The HTML + JavaScript community is huge too, and it includes many of the “changed” developers. Public companies can’t ignore new markets nor the popular standards that can help them enter those new markets.  Loyalty doesn’t trump fiduciary responsibility either. If Microsoft can appeal to new developers, then it should. If Microsoft can keep catering to its existing developers and customers -- not just through legacy support, but also through empowering futures -- then it probably will. You don’t have to shove your old friends out into the rain to make room for new ones; you can bring those new constituents in under a bigger tent.  I hope Microsoft will enlarge the tent, and I have trouble imagining why it would not.

• Classic ASP METADATA Tags Not Working - MDAC 2.8/WDAC 6.0 on a Windows 2008 Box Running IIS 7

  What I am trying to do is simple. I have some Classic ASP with include headers like the following referencing MDAC 2.5: METADATA TYPE="TypeLib" NAME="Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects 2.5 Library" UUID="{00000205-0000-0010-8000-00AA006D2EA4}" VERSION="2.5" Now I am trying to call this same include file on a Windows 2008 box with IIS 7 using MDAC 2.8 with this: METADATA TYPE="typelib" NAME="Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects 2.8 Library" UUID="{2A75196C-D9EB-4129-B803-931327F72D5C}" VERSION="2.8" My question is, why does this not work anymore? Has the tag reference changed? I ran MDAC checker and everything is installed correctly. What am I missing? I am running on a Windows 2008 box with IIS 7. Thanks in advance!

  Hi All, I have been trying to set up local debugging for my ASP.NET app in Delphi and am getting the error above. I have used the aspnet_regiis.exe tool with the following: Aspnet_regiis.exe -s W3SVC/1/ROOT/DevTest but this hasn't helped. It added it to IIS as an application but I am still getting the error: The project cannot be debugged because virtual directory "DevTes" is not configured with ASP.NET version 2.0 or 3.0 Use aspnet_regiis.exe to configure the local IIS web server. I am not really sure where to go from here so need some help please: Machine specs: Windows 7 64bit, IIS7, Using RAD Studio 2007.

• How to read an IIS 6 Website's Directory Structure using WMI?

  I need to read a website's folders using WMI and C# in IIS 6.0. I am able to read the Virtual directories and applications using the "IISWebVirtualDirSetting" class. However the physical folders located inside a website cannot be read using this class. And for my case i need to read sub folders located within a website and later on set permission on them. For my requirement i dont need to work on Virtual Directories/Web Service Applications (which can be easily obtained using the code below..). I have tried to use IISWebDirectory class but it has been useful.   Hi all, I recently installed TFS 2010 with the included sharepoint services on a single server. I am getting the following error multiple times on the project dashboard web page on the TFS2010 project protal after creating a brand new project in the default project collection. I am not an expert with WSS, so any guidance will be greatly appreciated. After reading a few articles I understand there are some DLL that are probably not declared as safe in a web config file. But I am not sure which DLL they are and where the web config file is. I looked at IIS to determine the directory structure in IIS is quiet different to the URL path ...Thanks very much. • Why does my Windows Form app timeout when repeatedly hitting IIS 7 externally?

  hey guys, I've got a very simple Windows Form app that hits an IIS 7 site about 2000 times in the space of a few seconds (using threads). When I run that app on the server itself, using either localhost or the ip address, everything is totally fine. However, when I run the app on my dev box, using the ip address, I get an error from the "GetResponse" method: The operation has timed out The App can definitely connect to the site, because it consistently either starts throwing the timeout error after 10 or so hits (no more than 11), or it throws the timeout error immediately. What's going on? It's hitting IIS 7 on a Windows Server 2008 VM (external box), Windows Firewall is OFF. My App is running locally on my dev box as the admin. cheers

  Hello I was here trying to figure out why my Reports manager is empty, there's no tabs at all. I installed SQL Server 2008 complete, but didn't not configure Reporting Services. When installing SQL Server 2008, this Windows 7 version didn't have yet IIS installed, I installed it later. I don't see where is this localhost/Reports physically on my Hard Drive, where is the physic folder? I don't see on IIS where is Report folder, would it exist? The site settings people talk about, I can't find it. The "Reporting Services" service is running on automatic at SQL Server Configuration Manager. How can I get Reporting Services this working without struggling? (I can't see why is necessary to customize all these user permissions)

  As noted by the title, what is the best way to configure an IIS 6.0 deployment of an ASP.NET MVC application such that connections to hidden shares are ignored? The application in question is using wildcard mapping to allow for clean URLs since we are planning on upgrading to IIS 7.0 in the near future and we are also handling the caching and compression issues with a custom library so we would like to avoid turning wildcard mapping off unless absolutely necessary. If I change the date format there in "Regional and Language Options", I see no effect in my application.

  we have implemented the code for installing the messenger theme pack using the client side scripting in a web page. We are creating an object of the messenger using the classid .Using this object we call the installcontent() method and try to install the messenger theme pack hosted at following path: http://www.messengerexpressions.com/assets/worldCup/cabs/en-gb.cab Our code initially checks whether the messenger is installed on the user machine or not. Then it checks for the user login ,once the messenger is installed on the machine. And if the user is signed-in , the messenger theme pack is installed. The code currently when hosted on IIS checks the “Sign-In of the user” but when it tries to install the theme pack an error is thrown “An ActiveX control on this page is unsafe.Your current security settings prohibit running unsafe control on this page.As a result,this page may not be display as intended.” Please let us know if any setting is required on IIS for running this piece of codeor anything that we are missing out.

• What to do with "Default Web Site" on a Japanese OS? (E.G: ??? Web ???)

  I'm currently in the process of upgrading old II6 automation scripts that use the iisvdir tool to create/modify/update apps and virtual directories. The IIS6 "iisvdir" commands reference paths in IIS6 that are from the metabase, eg, "/W3SVC/1/ROOT/MyApp" - where 1 is the "Default" website. The command doesn't actually require the display name of the site to make changes to it. With an English OS, the "Default Web Site" site name is fine for usage in AppCmd, but if the OS is Japanese, it will be named: "??? Web ???" So how can I script AppCmd to refer to sites, vdirs and apps using language neutral identifiers to reference the "Default App Site"? (Disclosure: I only have a IIS7-English machine that I am working on currently, but I have both IIS6-English and IIS6-Japanese machines for testing my old scripts - so perhaps it really is just "Default Web Site" still on Win2k8-Japanese?)

• "Error in the Site Data Web Service." when performing crawl

  Installed SharePoint Services v3 (SP2, october 2009 cumulative updates, Language Pack), attached to a content database I had previously (all works). Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what. Crawl log says there is Error in the Site Data Web Service., nothing more. There were known issues with a similar error: Error in the Site Data Web Service. (Value does not fall within the expected range.), but this is not the case as thats an old issue and i hope it has been included in SP2... Logs are from olders to newest (descending order). They don't appear to be very helpful.   Developer’s Guide To Collections in Microsoft® .NET, by Calvin Janes, discusses the various collections available in the built-in NET libraries, as well as  the advantages and disadvantages of using each type of collection. Other areas are also covered including how collections utilize memory, how to use LINQ with collections, using threading with collections, serializing collections, and how to bind collections to controls in Windows Forms, WPF and Silverlight. For developers looking for a simple reference book on collections, then this book will serve that purpose and serve it well. For those looking for a great read from cover-to-cover, they may be disappointed. This book tends to be repetitive in discussion topics, examples, and code samples in the first two parts of the book. In the first part, the author conducts walk-throughs to develop custom collections. In  the second part, the author conducts walk-throughs on using the built-in .NET collections. For experienced .NET developers, the first two parts will not provide much value. However, it is beneficial for new developers who have not worked with the built-in collections in .NET. They will obtain an understanding of the mechanics of the built-in collections and how memory is utilized when using the various types of collections. So in this aspect, new developers will get more value out of this book. The third and fourth parts delve into advanced topics, including using LINQ, threading, serialization and data binding. I find these two parts of the book are well written and flow better than the first two parts. Both beginner and experienced developers will find value in this half of the book, mainly on the topics of threading and serialization.   I have some reporting services reports that talk to Analysis Services and at times they fail with the following error: An error occurred during client rendering. An error has occurred during report processing. Query execution failed for dataset 'AccountManagerAccountManager'. The connection cannot be used while an XmlReader object is open. This occurs sometimes when I change selections in the filter. It also occurs when the machine has been under heavy load and then will consistently error until SSAS is restarted. • When runs a product out of support?

  That is a question I get regularly from customers. Microsoft has a great site where you can find that information. Unfortunately this site is not easy to find, and a lot of people are not aware of this site. A good reason to promote it a little. So if you ever get a question on this topic, go to http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/Default.aspx. At that site, you can find also the details of the policy Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy The Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy took effect in October 2002, and applies to most products currently available through retail purchase or volume licensing and most future release products. Through the policy, Microsoft will offer a minimum of: 10 years of support (5 years Mainstream Support and 5 years Extended Support) at the supported service pack level for Business and Developer products 5 years Mainstream Support at the supported service pack level for Consumer/Hardware/Multimedia products 3 years of Mainstream Support for products that are annually released (for example, Money, Encarta, Picture It!, and Streets & Trips) Phases of the Support Lifecycle Mainstream Support Mainstream Support is the first phase of the product support lifecycle. At the supported service pack level, Mainstream Support includes: Incident support (no-charge incident support, paid incident support, support charged on an hourly basis, support for warranty claims) Security update support The ability to request non-security hotfixes Please note: Enrollment in a maintenance program may be required to receive these benefits for certain products Extended Support The Extended Support phase follows Mainstream Support for Business and Developer products.
